Octogirl- so glad you can visit friends and family while you’re there. Loved your pic from the Lake Taho trail
Lilac Blue- happy Birthday a little late. Being able to lead yoga-that is impressive
Runnermom - so great that you can do lots of miles running and yoga. Nice combination. I just bought Hoka sneakers. They are my first serious pair of running shoes
Ruthbru- I love your exercise adventures. So great that you have people to exercise with. There’s something to be said for lying down and relaxing. I need to relax without snacking.
Claire - so great that you ski. I have in the past but was never very good. I gave it up many years ago
Martaj- best wishes as you power through treatment
Ginger-great news about your mom
Mommyof2- I love raking leaves as long as I don’t have to bag them. Isn’t it great to be productive and exercise?
Reader- so important to savor the good weather. I’m trying to take advantage of whatever daylight we have left. Also good that you’re mixing it up.
Edj3 - woo-hoo for the long run without issues- maybe you’ve turned the corner
Heidihill-I bet a personal trainer would make a big difference, but I’m afraid of having to work too hard

Easy three miles this morning in the freezing cold: 31F with enough wind to drop it to 21F. Right now, I'm going to give the 10k race a try on Saturday because today and Tuesday went well, no heart rate spikes.

Hope your weather is decent for Saturday, edj!
Reader, whatever you do each day is 100% more than doing nothing!
I subbed today & am soon off to Dance2Fit. One of the ladies has invited some of us regulars over to her house after class for snacks & refreshments (thus negating the calorie loss from exercising). I am going to try to snack 'moderately', but since I have about zero willpower.....we'll see......

walked to and from rads treatment today; 2.4 miles...then to a little taqueria near by for lunch, another .5 mile or so...that was it for exercise today...
the weather is great for walking. Too good. Wish we'd get some rain. but yeah, Ruth and others in northern climes, you don't want to know: supposed to be 79 in Sacramento tomorrow....

Hi all, temps are heading down tomorrow but today I got in a lovely 25 minute walk, enjoying the last of the pretty fall leaves. With a 23 degree low predicted for tomorrow night those last leaves will be falling soon. 🍂🍂🍁
Appreciate the encouraging words!

Octo...Glad you are getting your walking in! Very jealous of your temos. So cool here right Now but warming up for the weekend starting tomorrow...high of 38*!! Whoo hoo!!!
Ran 4 miles after work and 30 min of yoga today.

Hello, I jogged for an hour in intervals of 1 minute jog, 1 minute walk. Then, I did a 30 second plank pose.

I start everyday with one glass of warm water and then i do 10-15 walk in the garden …. Yes one thing more that I never miss is meditation.

Good morning all. Yesterday did a 2 mile walk and a wonderful class of Yoga. Then went to dinner and met up with friends who have gone through what we currently are. They are doing great. ice rain here in RI. Only 32 degrees out.

Good morning!
Whoa - I haven't logged in for a while and I landed on page 1263 as my last site visit! Tickled to report I managed to shovel my driveway before heading to work this morning. Coupla inches of light, fluffy stuff, and it would probably melt with the sunshine we're supposed to have today. I'm a freak however (some might call me a little OCD) about keeping snow shoveled and doing a neat, thorough job of it. Those of you who know me will probably be chuckling about now .
Trying to break back into a fitness routine. Have been much more active lately in general, in terms of keeping busy around the house with the myriad of things that need cleaning, picking up, putting away, organizing, moving, etc, etc, so that's good, but need to get some specific cardio and weights going again.
Have a fabulous day all!

I took today as a rest day--I'm definitely going to run that 10k race tomorrow. I'm nervous b/c of those spikes but this week's been good and tomorrow it will be five weeks off tamoxifen. So it should be almost all out of my system.
I'm still going to get the stress test and echocardiogram done. They're scheduled in this calendar year so I may as well make sure I'm good to go.

Ruthbru- lol about your willpower; mine is pretty low, too. But if there’s food in front of me then it goes to zero. At least you have people to do stuff with. That’s a powerful part of wellness
Edj3- good luck with the race. I wonder if the heart rate problem is because you had intense treatment just 6-7 months ago. Maybe as time marches on, it will improve.
Freaky - I really need to get a meditation routine going.
Sweet and special- I need to get serious about cleaning and organizing. I really need to make more time for it. I have so many excuses.
IamaCat - that’s impressive especially with the recent treatment.
I get to walk frequently on my job, so I love that (unless it’s raining and my shoes get wet). I have a Fit Bit which I love! I’m sort of addicted to it. I also keep track of exercise on the notes part on my phone. The Fitbit prompts me to move every hour so sometimes I just have to pace around the office.

Good luck on your race, edj!!
Welcome IAmAcat and Freaky!
I subbed again today & then hurried over to a clinic & got the first of the two part shingles vaccine that I had been on the list to get for a year (there is a big shortage). If you are over 50 and haven't yet gotten the vaccine, you should get on a list. Both my mom and sister have had shingles and were absolutely miserable! I did the treadmill at home tonight.

This is awesome:
This is Jim Thorpe. Look closely at the photo, you can see that he's wearing different socks and shoes. This wasn't a fashion statement. It was the 1912 Olympics, and Jim, an American Indian from Oklahoma represented the U.S. in track and field. On the morning of his competitions, his shoes were stolen. Luckily, Jim ended up finding two shoes in a garbage can. That's the pair that he's wearing in the photo. But one of the shoes was too big, so he had to wear an extra sock. Wearing these shoes, Jim won two gold medals that day. This is a perfect reminder that you don't have to resign to the excuses that have held you back. So what if life hasn't been fair? What are you going to do about it today? Whatever you woke up with this morning; stolen shoes, ill health, failed relationships, failed business, don't let it stop you from running your race. You can experience more in life if you'll get over the excuses and get on with living. You can have reasons or you can have results...but you can't have both.

Amazing Edj3, enjoy the 10k, you have trained so well and will smash it! IAmAcat and Freaky good to have you here. Ruth, a women in my class at 87 is grappling with the ending of shingles and I asked if she thought of the vaccine and replied that she was too old for it. Thanks for the Jim Thorpe inspiration. Hi Sweet, good to see you posting. Hey Octo, thinking about you.
Strange things in Pilates class yesterday. Someone, I'm sure by mistake took my black 1/4 zip Nike shirt. I wear this over my tank to keep warm and nowhere to be found by my clothes and that was a drag. Then I had a quick coffee seeing a girlfriend in the cafe at the gym on my way out and she looked at me and said what happened to your eye? Well, I looked in the mirror and a blood vessel in my right eye, far right white (now red) of my eyeball. I can see find and sort of can recall in the part of class on all 4's doing pointer. I bought on Amazon a month ago, a blood pressure monitor as I felt like I did in the last of pregnancy, as I had developed pre-eclampsia blood pressure. My several daily readings have been normal. Now at 9am, teaching bodyflow/balance and look Halloween ready..so attractive! Let's keep at it everyone!

Hello, and thank you for the kind welcomes. Tonight, I did a 30 second plank, jogged for an hour in intervals of 1 minute jog, 1 minute walk, then ended with a 30 second plank.

IAm, are you by any chance a cat lover?
Lilac, I would think that if I were 87 and still going out and about to classes and such, that I would NOT be too old to get the shingles shot! Speaking of the shot, my arm is really sore. Ouch! I am off the PiYo in a few minutes and will do the treadmill later this afternoon.
Happy Saturday!

OK! Big 10K race this morning, over 600 participants. I finished 3rd in my age group--still 2 minutes off my PR but I'm pretty happy because I was under an hour, average pace was 9:29 and best of all, my heart behaved!

Congratulations, Edj! Looking good!! ❤🏃♀️❤

Hi all, I did a 25 minute walk around the lake today- all bundled up in 3 sweatshirts, and wool gloves. Happy because I met my goal of doing "something" for 5 days this week. Four days of walking and one day of yoga-ish stretching to a video. I was concerned about my knee but whatever was going on is now much better. 🍁🍂🌡❄🌨 Snow maybe on Wednesday in DC.

Tonight, I did a 30 second plank, jogged for 15 minutes, walked for 45 minutes, then finished with a 30 second plank.

Hi, all! I have been struggling to get in my exercise the last couple of weeks. Winter temps arrived a little early, with snow on Halloween. Now the time change is killing me this week. DH is working third shift so that and the time change have my dog up at all hours of the night. In short, I have been too tired and cold but I resolve to get back in order next week.
Octo that is pretty scary and I am glad the surgery is done. I did wonder why we didn’t see pics on the Santa Fe trip. Now ai know why. Beautiful Tahoe pic.
Lilac, Happy belated birthday!
Congrats, Edj on your fine race.
Ruth, what a difference the olympics is today. I can’t imagine performing in wrong size second hand shoes. It’s a good message to not let things stand in our way.
I am out to mow the lawn and rake leaves. I will have to rak again because only half our leaves have fallen but maybe it’s better to do it in batches.

Well, I just came in from shoveling snow!
That shingles shot really threw me for a loop yesterday; so while I did go to PiYo, instead of walking on the treadmill later in the day, I took a nap (something that I never do!). I am back to normal today & so will either walk on the treadmill at home or go walk around the track at the fitness center before yoga this afternoon.

Hello everybody! I would like to join this group since I really need to get in shape after treatment. I was never an exercise enthusiast but now I see a real need to exercise ... The problem is that I have an irrational fear of lymphedema, since I had an ALDN. I see some women here with ALDN doing planks and shoveling snow... Are you doing those things with sleeves? I'm planning to start with my rebounding tomorrow -😘

Yay Edj!!
Welcome Euphorbia!
Hi all-
The little DS and I spent the day at Storm King Art center which is a huge outdoor sculpture park. We walked 4 miles. Here are a couple pics- if you zoom in on the background of little DS pic you'll see a wall by Andy Goldsworthy. My fave at Storm King.
The pine cone bling is courtesy of the kids art tent!

GREAT pictures, Falconer!!
Welcome, Euphorbia. I had 11 lymph nodes removed, so I know where you are coming from. I don't wear a sleeve and have never developed lymphedema (knocking on wood). When I had my surgery in 2007, there was no one around to go to for advice; so I did a lot of studying on my own. Here are some thoughts & tips I came up with then, which may be helpful to you.
First, I think that whether or not you are prone to LE has mostly to do with how your lymph system handles trauma. I would say most cases (unless you are in a horrible accident or are doing really extreme activities) are neither through any virtue or fault of your own; just a matter of good or bad 'luck'.
That being said, there are many 'little' things that we can do that may reduce the risk of developing LE or minimize flares (these are for people with SNB too):
- No BP, IVs, needles, shots etc. in that arm....consider getting a medical ID bracelet (to wear when traveling anyway). There are some really pretty ones out there that look like jewelry
- Wear gloves when doing yard work, gardening etc.
- Wear sunscreen when out in the sun, bug spray when out with the bugs
- If you get a cut, scrap, bite...wash it with soap/water and slap on a bandage. If you see any sign of infection, get to the Dr. & on antibiotics ASAP
- Be sure to switch arms when carrying your purse, hauling around anything heavy, dragging luggage etc.
- Be careful about saunas (I pretty much avoid them), and also manicures and massages (on that quadrant of the body anyway).....not everyone does this, but that's just me.
- Keep a healthy weight
- Keep hydrated, limit alcohol
- Don't wear tight rings, watches, bracelets on that arm (when flying, I put my rings on my other hand & leave them on that side fro a couple hours after I land, or don't wear them at all).
- Also, be sure to keep well hydrated when flying, move your arm around a lot, make fists etc. get up & walk around the cabin (which won't be a problem if you are well-hydrated because you will have to go to the bathroom!), if someone wants to help you hoist your carry on & off the overhead, let them.....maybe think of checking a heavy bag (that's what I do)
- When exercising that arm; start very slowly, take your time...build up weights very slowly...don't skip levels...don't do too many reps in one session. Mix up your exercises, don't work the same muscle groups every day. You may want to work with an experienced trainer (or PT) to help you construct a balanced program.
- One thing I do want to add; after my surgery I was scared to start doing upper body. Neither my surgeon nor my oncologist could give me any good solid advice, so I talked to my GP. What he said was that I DID want to exercise my upper body, that it was important to do so as it would actually build up the lymph system, and although, of course, I should be careful and notice if my arm felt heavy/swollen etc. that I shouldn't be afraid to have it feel a little 'normal' soreness...because anytime you exercise a part of your body that you haven't been using for awhile, of course, it will feel sore. That made sense to me, and gave me 'permission' to get moving.

Ruth - I'm waiting for my 2nd shingles shot, but they are out - I still have time as its only 2+ months
Ruth fave great advice regarding LE. I don't wear a sleeve on long flights or short flights. I don drink a lot of water so I'm up . to use the facilities a good deal of time. I get manicures a few times a year (2-3 times). I could never handle the hear of a sauna or hot tub - so not an issue for me. I'm terrible about not using sunscreen or gloves in the garden (though I don't do much gardening). I'm so right sided dominant its hard for me to use my left arm to carry. I have a small cross body purse so that's not an issue but I'm bad about carry my work backpack on my right shoulder. NO blood draws or B/P on BC side (12+ nodes removed). I do know that it can occur at anytime, so I consider myself lucky that for 13+ years I've been LE free. Someone told me on the LE board here at bco that LE can show up on prophy side as well. My BS told me that she only took the first layer of lymph nodes to reduce the risk of LE.
Record high yesterday - 77 F, 60s today and 30s tomorrow with snow 1-3 inches but ice below the snow)!!! Then 60s on Tuesday.
Cleaned out the cabinets above the washer and dryer - so much junk to throw out!!! I have 4 irons (one is travel iron - giving it away). One is in a box. Not sure how I came to have 3, but I think at least one was my mother's. Next I went into the linen closet - I have at least 8 table clothes that I bought at BBB - paid $2 or $3 for a few of them. If neither of my girls want any, I'll give away. Also a brand new set of sheets that went with our old comforter - so its going to charity. It's amazing how much "out of sight, out of mind". Thanksgiving week, when I'm off, I will take a load to the place I donate (they give everything to their clients). I also have my younger daughter's bike and some games that are like new that I want to donate to the Santa Claus shop - I best do that soon if I want it to happen this year. I don't want them to be sold at Goodwill. The Santa Claus shop is for low income kids - they take new and like new toys/games. I . have lots to stuffed animals and beanie babies to give away, but I don't think I have time this year to get them all gathered up and dusted off.
Sorry for not addressing anyone

This cleaning out bug must be contagious. I finally got to do the basics apartment-wise yesterday. Today's mission was to get to the bottom of the "closet full to the brim, but nothing to wear from the waist down" mystery.
The solution proved to be a serious sorting of trousers into 4 piles: ready to wear; time for the cleaners; hold until I lose weight (about 3 fabulous pairs); and ready for the bin (by far the largest number). While at it, I put some other items into the bin pile and generally tidied everything up. I know that I could do this with sweaters, but I am much more current on that front having ditched a few items when I can back with my new cashmere ones. (Shoes need to be added to the clean out list, but not as urgent as trousers.)
I also fixed a fabulous pair of trousers that I bought a couple of months ago, but had never worn because the pockets needed undoing. THEN, I lucked out on eBay and was able to replace the ones I had last worn in London, but tossed when I returned. They were really finished. I am thrilled to find another pair of exactly the same ones. (I was equally thrilled yesterday to find another pair of the jeans that really fit in the fabric I like!!!!
There is now space in my closet!!!
Then off for a 5 mile run by way of the bin. Then got in a bit of strength training helping a neighbor carry a very heavy bag of cat litter to her place.
I cooked up a storm yesterday so don't have to cook dinner tonight
Now, if I can only keep that cleaning bug going for a bit longer. Because who knows when it will strike again??? - Claire
