I made this recipe for a work colleague whose birthday we celebrated today. It's traditionally made with cherries, but blueberries work just great. And it's blueberry season here! It makes an amazing dessert, but would also work for brunch. Think the most delicious pancake item you have ever tasted. Super easy too. - Claire

    Clafoutis

    • 2 cups cherries, or blueberries
    • 1 ¼ cups whole milk
    • ½ cup sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 3 free range eggs
    • 1 cup flour
    • Confectioners sugar to dust

    Oven 350.

Use a 4 cup heatproof dish (grease with butter). Mix ingredients together other than fruit. This will make a nice batter. Put fruit in baking dish, then top with liquid mixture.

Bake until puffed and golden, about 25 minutes.

    Dust with confectioners sugar.

Serve warm with heavy cream, ice cream, or vanilla whipped cream.

    Hi all:

Hubby and I are in California for a few weeks: we had two pieces of essential business/stuff to do here, five weeks apart, and I didn't want to fly or do the 1000 mile drive back and forth twice...so, we rented a house in Pacific Grove (Monterey area) for a bit over a month. So happy to be in my home state for a visit, even if timing is not ideal. We've had fires in the vicinity (meaning within 20 miles or so) but we were never threatened here and the firefighters have gotten a good handle on containing the ones closest to us, thanks in no small part to very favorable good weather with the famous California coastal fog.

So, air quality, which had been bad for a few days (lots of smoke) is now good, and hubby and I are celebrating by walking by the ocean every day. When I am not walking and have to get some work done, I can see the ocean from my dining room window (less than a block away). Here is a pic that illustrates a typical view on one of our walks...

    I love ocean walks!!!

It was the 8th Anniversary of our Wednesday Walking Women group.....plus one of our founding members is moving to Arizona. We had a little party after walking (we were only close together for the picture).

Saw the podiatrist today, she's concerned I have a non-union fracture going on. She's ordering me a bone growth stimulator (used one when I fractured my pelvis two years ago so I know the drill). Thankfully I start Tymlos today and I've met all deductibles again.

    Sheesh.

The weather cooled off considerably today so we took the puppies on a hike (when going up a hill, it is helpful to have big dogs to pull you up!). Dance2fit and Yoga in the Park tonight (which ended early because it started to rain).

Octo, how wonderful, I'd love to rent a airbnb for a month in Pacific Grove! Edj3, do you have a 5th metatarsal fracture? Smart to see a podiatrist. Ruth, happy 8th to WWW!

I'm reviewing the case study I've been working on and son will help with reference page and then turning it in, as due date is tomorrow. New release for Bodyflow/Bodybalance to learn for Sept.19, and this weekend is a bank hoilday weekend (3 day weekend) here in the UK. Gyms have been opened for a month (with strict guidelines) and thus far, no Covid-19 transmission from attending gyms - that has been helpful for the industry. We still don't have cinemas, theaters, or music events open.

LilacBlue no, it's the third metatarsal that broke, just inside the joint in the foot.

I'm so glad no COVID cases have resulted from the gyms being open--and good luck w/ your case study.

Our company is giving us Friday, Sept 4 off so now Labor Day weekend is a 4 day weekend!

We haven't had any new cases with our gym either (so far, knocking on wood). Another (smaller) gym had a teacher (who is an ER nurse) test positive, so they shut down the whole gym for two weeks & didn't have any other problems. I think if the gyms are very careful and all the people are very careful......it can be done (although there also is going to be some luck involved no matter what you do).

I spent a couple hours cleaning my car this morning. As you know, we have been spending lots of time with the grandpuppies since the pandemic began. My car has become the 'Dog Car' and was looking AWFUL! I washed the seat covers, washed down the doors, dashboard etc. etc. shop vacced all the fur (Dalmatians apparently are terrible shedders and their little white hairs don't vacuum up very good. I ended up taking masking tape and pulling it out that way. DS took the afternoon off to do some work around his house. Along with his two dogs, he is babysitting his friend's two dogs for the weekend. We went over and helped him take the whole crew for a 45 minute walk. I did a short 20 minute yoga DVD after that (to make up for my abbreviated class last night).

    Happy Weekend!

Two old out-of-town friends over for a backyard picnic yesterday. Since I have a split level house, I got my 10,000 steps running up and down them getting ready before & cleaning up after. I took a walk today & did Zoom Barre Sculpt.

When I read the "review" by another Stage IV poster, mara51506, I purchased the Cubii Jr. Under Desk Elliptical machine. I've had it just a day and a half now, but I'm loving it. It actually works my thighs and i can use it while hanging out here. I've not been getting all of my steps in each day like I used to, but I think this will help.

Sunshine - I just looked it. up on Amazon - looks interesting - going to have to keep it in mind as the days get shorter and its dark out in the morning before work

Good walking week-end. Decided to wipe down and trim my plants in the family room, while wipe the window shelf, I noticed how dirty the screens and windows were so decided to wash them - DH helped with the screens - can't believe how great they look, but while moving a little table to clean, I noticed how dirty the baseboards are - so I guess that is my next tasks (as I write this, it sounds like the book If you give a mouse a cookie) - one thing leads to another. Winking

Sunshine, I think they are great and welcome! Edj, your foot recovery truly is one long haul; I'm rooting for ya! Ruth, our border collie sheds like crazy I get the car hair thing.

The only yoga studio in the area just bit the dust as with reduced participant numbers, they could not make the overhead. One of the gyms I teach in may shut at the end of October when paid staff furlough ends; in the same boat. Our local leisure centre has not re-opened and has no plans to open until next year and made us all redundant. The fitness industry has taken a real beating from Covid-19, although bike suppliers/stores are going through the roof. It's feeling like autumn here and soon rain everyday. Where is everyone going to go then?

That's what I wonder, Lilac. Our days are already getting shorter and our 'winter' can start as early as mid-October. If we are lucky we can make it to the end of October and if it's a miracle maybe until Thanksgiving or early December. January, February, March are always cold, dark, and icy too. Everyone is sick of doing Zoom for exercise, meeting up, meetings etc. so I really worry about people's mental health even more than physical health.

I am going to Pound this morning & Zumba this evening. I might actually try to get some things done in-between....but after writing the above, maybe I should just be outside!

It really is possible to exercise all winter, or at least most days. I am saying this as someone who grew up in Northern Vermont. The trick is to get outside whenever you can and when the sun is out. This can be very infrequent in Seattle, but there are usually at least some sun breaks, even during those seemingly endless rainy days. I have the gear, other than Yaktrax: skis, snowshoes, hiking boots, poles of various descriptions, warm jackets, socks, hats, etc. I can also cycle here throughout most of the winter, but I like skiing even more.

Cycled 32 miles on Saturday on a route of my own creation. It had very few people, and those people get "share the road" so a delightful experience. I was with the friend who had wrenched her knee a month ago and is mostly recovered. Not a route she knew at all. We will do the route into the mountains in a month or so, once the campers leave. Again, great fun. Stayed at home so just a 6 mile run yesterday.

I am taking Labor Day to do another fun adventure. Back to the vineyard for camping in the orchard, and I am joining the crush crew so that I continue to be welcome. They will be operating their brandy still and pears and plums will be the fruits being made into alcohol. This is an extremely low budget getaway. I have decided to spend a weekend on Lopez Island in October. This time, I will go upscale with lodging (think large bath tub and fireplace) and also take my car. I want to explore a couple of places that are much easier to navigate with footwear other than cycling shoes. I will also take a slicker in case it's raining.

I can't stand myself if I don't get outside during the winter.

I think I will be working from home most of this winter, so will be able to get out in midday. All my work will most likely be virtual, so it will be really critical for me to get out in daylight. Plus, make sure I include an adventure or 2 each month. BTW - Saturday was glorious, but windy. Got plenty of upper body exercise staying upright on the bicycle and avoiding the 8' deep ditches. (This is fen land.)

Speaking of adventures, I have never cycled that area when it's a bit frosty and glorious with fresh snow on the mountains. I bet the views are even more spectacular.

Just a question of figuring it out, and then doing it. Happy adventures! - Claire

I'll echo that it's absolutely possible to get your exercise in during the winter, even in the dark.

You guys know I'm a runner and when not sidelined by a broken foot, I'm out running no later than 5 AM. I promise you, it's never light at 5 AM, not even in the summer. I use a flashlight called a knuckle light, it slips over the back of my hand and gives me enough light so I don't hit a pot hole or a branch.

The other key to getting outside in winter is having the right kind of clothing for your winter weather and your activity. I've collected running gear for temps down to single digits (and lower if you count wind chill which I most definitely do). I didn't get everything all at once, this stuff isn't cheap, but now I have good options for most temp ranges. My gear includes 3 different running jackets, several sets of cold weather running tights, Costco's leggings -- those 32 Degree ones, two pairs of running pants that block wind, a merino wool buff, a honking heavy buff (some sort of industrial fleece) and three different sets of running gloves with mittens (again ranging from thin to I can't move my fingers thick). Oh and Smartwool socks, those are the BEST. I wear those year round.

The only thing I personally won't do is run on ice or snow. I live in a very hilly area and having already had one pelvic fracture (although not from falling), I won't risk another one. You may be fine or have flat terrain, or be comfortable running in spikes or Yak Traks. It can be done, but that's one thing I personally don't do.

Really so much of getting in your winter workout is reframing what you tell yourself about the weather. So you get cold. But you also get a work out in and then you can bask in feeling virtuous the rest of the day.

The only time I don't walk outside in the winter is the occasional day when it is icy. Snow doesn't stop me. I have great snow boots and snow pants. Layer my top with a vest and coat. In the summer the only time I don't walk is its a downpour - light rain is okay - just don't want to get soaked. During the short days, when I'm in a building, I leave for work a little early, then walk by work. Now that I'm working remotely, I may be able to walk in the middle of the morning!!

Gorgeous weather today - started out cool - in the 40s - so needed a coat at 7:00. Got into the 70s by late afternoon and sunny.

    Going to go start dinner.

today was a beautiful day here. Mid 70's nice breeze. Made me think that fall is not far away. Reading the other posts, great was to get exercise in winter if you live in area with snow is cross country skiing and down hill skiing. I also grew up in VT and skied from the age of 5. Now 63 soon to be 64 still do both. So refreshing, and a great way to get outside. I even love to snowshoe. My exercise today was painting the crown molding in my living room with 2 coats of fresh paint, and did the ceiling. Whew that ceiling about did me in. Tomorrow walls. Needed a fresh coat of paint so badly now looks soooo nice. I can't believe tomorrow is Sept first. This hot summer flew by. Off to bed, whipped

Here's some of the Wednesday Walking Women (we took pictures in two groups so we could limit the contact). We'll maybe walk the grandpuppies this afternoon and I will either go to Pound or Zumba tonight. When I sign off here, I will check online to see if either has openings.

I've been putting to good use a treadmill my mother gifted me. It's a low end one that has some glitches. It has a fixed incline and I have safely propped up the back to reduce it, and it has no side rails so I have placed a chair next to it to hold on to, but I have it strategically placed in front of the air conditioner and have been doing a 30 minute walk on it at about 4.0 mph. I have a short stride so that's a brisk pace for me.

When I first started walking and using treadmills 20 years ago I could barely walk faster than 2.5 mph, which is what I cool down to just to remind myself how far I've come.

Lilac, I ordered it from the National Museum of American Jewish History (which is in Philadelphia). I also got several RBG face masks & a travel coffee mug with Princess Leia (from Star War) with the saying 'Women Belong in the Resistance'. An interesting note is that, with Covid, the museum was in bug trouble financially. After the Yo Semite remarks by the president, their sales of the tee shirt (which they were already selling) went through the roof and really gave them a boast. They probably ship to the UK.

I went to Pound this morning & will go back to Dance2fit & maybe Barre Sculpt today. Why are all the toning classes I enjoy scheduled on the same day????? It is really fall here; cool mornings, leaves turning colors and starting to drop. It has been super windy, which is sadly speeding up the process.

Ruth - the T-shirt is great - I should to see if they have long sleeve - would order one even though I generally don't wear T-shirts.

My work week is over!!!! My away message is on. I often check messages on Fridays and even will attend a meeting - but tomorrow I'm not logging on to work at all.

Tomorrow is our 43rd wedding anniversary!! Looking forward to the long week-end with my DH and lots of hiking. The weather is going to be nice, though a little hot, till Tuesday when it drops down to the 50s. I'm sure the mountains will get snow.

My gf who had a lumpectomy a couple weeks ago saw the MO today and chemo is off the table. i am beyond happy for her. I think she has radiation, but I don't know the details. I'm so glad that she trusts me to share. I'm careful to balance checking in on her and annoying her. She is my friend who I baked cookies for and then sent cookies to my daughter in Israel. I don't date tell you how much it cost to ship them DHL. It took a week to get to her. The day after I shipped she got a tracking number so she asked me if I sent her a package. I told her it was supposed to be a surprise, so she had no idea what I sent. Needless to say, she was happy and told me it was nice to have a taste from home.

Have a good week-end. I may be checking in here.

Happy Anniversary, Karen!!!! So glad your friend doesn't need chemo. When I was diagnosed, a friend who had been through BC treatments called me every week to check in. It was invaluable for me to have someone who had 'been there, done that' and who could REALLY understand what I was going through. I have tried to be that person to several friends who have since gone through the same thing.

I met two friends at a park for a walk and socially distanced picnic lunch, after that DH & I took the grandpuppies for a good hike. It was a lovely day. We are trying to do outside things as much as possible while the weather lasts.
