    7 mile bike ride yesterday. It was so nice, cool out but so nice and not too sore this am. today upping it to 10 miles

    I'm starting to research bikes in case this broken foot issue ends up being the end of my running. Any of you have good advice? All road, no trail, no clips (that freaks me right the heck out) and would far prefer normal handlebars instead of those curly ones. See how lacking in knowledge I am? I don't even know what the proper names are of either handlebar.

    I off to Pound in a few minutes & will go to Zumba tonight. We are having another week of nice weather so I am sure I will do something fun outside this afternoon.

    Hi everyone,

    Back from a weekend of playing winemaker's helper. So fun, and It was sunny and glorious east of the Cascades. We are past the smoke here, so expect to get back on my bicycle this coming weekend. My car is now fixed up nicely, so no more noise.

    On bicycles: my advice is that you either go extremely cheap and get a garage sale one, or you go to a bicycle shop and get fitted. Expect to spend several hundred dollars. You also need a helmet, cycling shoes, a mirror, a bell, lights/reflectors, etc. Important to be visible. If you are cycling more than ten miles or so at a time, you also need PADDED cycling shorts. You can make do with the other, and this gives you a nice list of presents for people to get you. Make sure you get a bicycle pump! You will need it.

    I remember when it took everything I had to go nine miles; now it's 60 or so miles that I find taxing. Though the most I have done this season is a bit over 40 miles. I need to do at least one 60 mile ride this season, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

    My advice on the bicycle itself is to go one step up from what you find easy to ride. Because once you gain strength and proficiency, you will find the easier model boring. I think you want to look at something with straight handlebars, 27-30 gears, wider tires but not fat ones, not a super wide seat. If you go the bike shop route, you can test ride several.

    Electric bikes are all the rage, and what I have learned is that they make cycling more fun for a lot of people, though obviously not as good a workout. They are also pricey, though getting a lot less expensive.

    I am expecting that NEXT YEAR will feature lots of great used bicycles. People who bought during COVID, only to discover that they didn't really like cycling. I could be wrong about this.

    Anyway, happy cycling! I find that it's great fun and great exercise including working your upper body (so you don't tip over). It's also fun to do group rides once you get your game up a bit. They know the fun routes, so you don't have to learn them the hard way. I don't do them much at this point, but ten years ago, they helped me explore a new area.

    I can't quite see the point of an electric bike, to be honest. If I go the cycling route, it's my running replacement and I don't run with an electric scooter!

    Last weekend, we took a long weekend of hiking in SW Virginia and stayed a cabin in Mountain Lake Lodge (where the movie, Dirty Dancing, was filmed). So fun to see the place. We hiked every day. One day was foggy/rainy so we will have to return another time and re-do that hike. Should have had excellent views.

    On a different hike near our cabin , this one went around the lake and was thick with Rhododendrons. It was such a nice weekend with relaxation, good food and plenty of exercise with my favorite people

    edj - I bought a cruiser bike several years ago - 3 speed. It looks like the bikes we grew up with in the 50s and 60s with the big fat sear. No hand breaks and can't see the gears. Pedal backwards to break. Its great for easy riding as the name implies (cruiser). I bought it "used" at a bike shop in near new condition but it was $300 or $400 several years ago. I don't ride it much, so it sits in the garage. I walk more and have just started running. I used to mountain bike but gave that up after diagnosis. BUT I was never the master biker that Claire is or had the knowledge she has. And never rode the long distances she rides.

    Hi Everyone. Gorgeous day! Low humidity, temps in the low 60s. Mowing was a pleasure compared to even last week and definitely compared to all the mowing in July and August.

    DD bought a house and moved this past weekend. She had plenty of help loading furniture, etc. I got out easy by baking a lasagna dinner for the workers. She's getting settled in and I'm so happy for her bc she's been looking for a long time. Plus the house was move in ready.

    Back to work today but managed to squeeze in 1.5 hours of painting after work before a 55 minute steep hill workout with a friend. Won’t have opportunity for anything tomorrow as must do an oil change and tire rotation at lunch break and after work pick up DH from airport (60 minutes away). Last week’s PTO was a lovely preview of what retirement will eventually be like. Gotta admit, while I do love my job and the people I work with, I’m really starting to feel just tired of it. 41.5 years with 2 maternity leaves (6 weeks max in those days without a doctor’s excuse for something longer!), coupla surgeries and paid holidays off - I just really want to be done sooner than what the need for health insurance will allow. Keep hoping for an early retirement offer from employerbut not holding my breath........sigh

    I rode only 7 miles on my bike yesterday. Mostly hill this time. Feeling it in my legs this morning. Feels like good discomfort. Haven't gotten out to ride in many months, but being that blood work has finally returned to normal felt good to be outside. We pulled our boat out of water yesterday. Wax on wax off. Lot's of arm movements. Needless to say I was beat at end of day. Nice tired though

    Was it on this page that someone mentioned a under the desk pedal (forget the name of the machine). If so, do you still like it? Share any info please.

    Been getting out to run/walk before work, but its getting harder to get as long run in as I want as I can't go till 6:30ish as its still dark till almost then and as winter comes it will be dark earlier. I need to be ready start work by 7:30 or 8 and once I'm in person I'll have to leave by 7:30 if not earlier. Been getting 15K in most days so want to have a back up. Speaking of morning run, best start getting ready.

    Walked puppies and went to Barre Sculpt. The temperature is 15 degrees above normal so we are enjoying it while it lasts!

    Missed my walk today thanks to Tropical Storm "Beta". It would have been Day #171. We're at just about 8" of rain in my part of town so far. My neighborhood is OK - no flooding. Hopefully the rain bands will lessen tomorrow.

    Ruth - gorgeous changing leaf colors. I miss that even after 34+ years in CO. The Aspens turn gold, but not the same as maples etc.

    Weather is heating up and 90s may happen again - at least it is cool at night and in the morning when I run at 6:30 its in the 50s.

    My husband met someone today who works for the airlines and said he wouldn't get on a plane due to people not always being truthful - he told my husband no matter how much the airlines clean the planes its the people who are the problem. Maybe its a good thing the borders are closed and my passport is being processed for renewal so I don't think about flying to see my kids. My older daughter wanted to come "home' for a few days - but no direct flights unless she drives 4 hours to Detroit. I agree with her its too much driving, but it would have been great to have her for a few days. And the airfare RT was $125. It's almost a year since we've seen each other.

    It has been very cool here i southern RI. 6 mile bike ride at beach yesterday, and then 9 holes of gold. It was a great day

    Been running every morning and it is addicting. Managing most days 2 more walks. Really considering the under the desk eliptical for when its too dark to walk before work. Now I need to leave by 6:30 to have enough time to be ready to start the day by 7:45 or 8. Once I'm back in the buildings, that will be harder, unless I shower before I run.

    Meeting day - 2 this morning and end the day with one - all google meets or zoom, Then in between more screen time to do my begining of year "conversation starter" which is used as part of our evaluation - there is also middle of the year and end of the year too. This year our whole evaluation is based on performance where that used to be 50% and then personal goals were 50%. Also screen time to upgrade for a training that I will be presenting next month.

    Gosh, it has been nearly 2 months since I have been here. Just reading the last couple of pages makes me realize how much I have missed you all. I must say that this covid thing has really affected me - in general I'm a pretty even keel type person, but this summer has been a roller coaster for me - the lows of not being able to socialize or see family, versus the highs of finally getting to see my twin grandkids for the first time. After that visit, I sunk really low. After a couple of weeks of just moping around, I had a series of interactions that finally got me to pull myself out of the hole I was in. Slowly I have been adding things back into my life that bring me joy, and starting to care about all the weight I have gained, and the lack of physical activity I have grown accustomed to. My youngest son visited earlier this month, and he is one that is always moving. We went for a bike ride, I'm usually fine with 15-20 miles, and I struggled with a 10 mile trip. We went for a hike, one we did last year, and I was slow as molasses. Wake up call for me, I have to get moving again. One thing I have recently found is pickleball - what fun! So sad that I found it in the fall when it will soon be over, but for now it is a wonderful new way to exercise, and I can pick it back up in the spring. Also trying to squeeze in beach walks when I can, fall is such a nice time to be at the beaches here.

    Wanted to weigh in on bikes - correct me if I'm wrong Clare, but I think the road bike with regular handlebars is called a hybrid. Tires are bigger than a true road bike, but not really big like a mountain bike. It is a geared bike with hand brakes, and the seat is more "ample" than those skinny little racing seats. I love mine. Now I just need to use it more!

    Yes on the hybrid bicycles, though they seem to be called "City Bikes" these days. Seats are usually wider, but not always. The whole idea is that they are more for commuting than really long distances.

    Pat, I am so sorry that you got caught in the COVID spiral. One of the reasons I insisted on getting my butt out the door. Getting on my bicycle was wonderful as it allowed for a change of scenery plus the endorphins. I almost always would meet people and chat, even if at a distance. A few longer rides will do amazing things for your endurance and speed.

    I need to get back on mine, even if it's rainy this weekend. The air is now clear and I'm staying home. Think I will do the route past the farm stand. I also want to spend some time sorting out my jewelry....long overdue, and it's time now that I am done with the headboard project. Nothing like a bedroom upgrade. I am loving the result and my dark green velvet headboard.

    Pat, since you live in RI, a fabulous day trip would be Block Island which I have cycled about 3 times - this when I lived north of NYC where it was a "hike" to get to. Take the ferry and your bicycle over, and it's about 20 glorious miles of cycling and the most spectacular scenery. You mask up on the ferry. The rest is outside. If that adventure doesn't cure what ails you, nothing will! - Claire

    I've been walking for years, but just recently started running every morning and it is addicting. I still walk at least twice more in the day. My DH takes all the credit for it - he says he got me out walking when I was Dx and got me running - but he run/walks and I've gotten into just running. I used to struggle to keep up with him and not sure if I could now, but I'm pushing myself harder. On week days I run at 6:30ish but as it stays dark longer in the mornings it will be hard to run before work. Thinking of getting an under the desk elliptical. Working from home and staring at a computer all day is hard!!! Figure it I find the right place to sit, I could use it while working especially during a meeting or paperwork (not with kids).

    Pat - I hear you on missing family. Its going on a year since I've seen my oldest daughter, 9 months since youngest daughter and 7 since I've seen my son - I should say we, as my DH hasn't seen them either. Border are closed to see my girls, my passport is sitting in the passport agency awaiting renewal and lastly, I'm not getting on a plane anytime soon. My son is the shortest distance but my girls are 4 hours and 10+ hours by plane. One day - we talk on a regular basis, but somehow we gorget to face time/zoom/google meets.

    DH just told me time for our evening walk.

    This whole thing is so difficult on an emotional level. My sister from NC (who I usually see at least once a year) wondered if it would be safe to come this way on an RV trip and I had to say NO. Our numbers are going through the roof & who knows how many unsafe situations they might be exposed to on a long road trip. Sadness! I can't imagine how we are going to be able to navigate the holidays, or any semblance of normal every day life, once it's too cold to have get-togethers outside.

    I talked to an old friend on the phone for a long time, finished a book, walked with the dogs on a lovely trail, went to Dance2Fit and Yoga in the Park. Our days of park yoga will soon be at an end (the weather) & I dread going back to Zoom for class (our yoga teacher works in a high risk environment so doesn't dare come back to the gym to teach).

    Temp today supposed to be 91 which will tie the record from 1998. By Sunday will be in the 60s :)

    Ruth - we haven't seen our kids in forever and doesn't seem like we will get to see them soon. That is the hardest part of this whole Covid situation. Granted I don't see friends either and work is through the camera screen. Wonder if/when things will get back to some normalcy.

    Ruth, nice photo with some Walking Women doing squats and lunges. Hehe. Fall is zipping by where you are. We are still mostly green. But soon we will have to eat out like this (photo taken from the NY Times)

    edj, I have an electric city bike and an electric mountain bike. I've been electrically assisted for 12 years now. I barely ever drive the car and the mountains can get steep here, so having two e-bikes is totally worth it for me. It certainly helped improve my aerobic fitness and endurance as I would have been too pooped to go very far otherwise. I think going off road is better for building bones as you have more resistance (mountain biking) and more vibration (gravel biking). Gravel bikes are the latest trend here seen on the trails. Mostly young people.

    DH and I took a break for a few days and were hiking and biking in glorious weather and scenery. I was mentally exhausted after our last mountain bike ride on a new trail as it was constantly changing and required you to adapt super fast on tight turns, rapid ups and downs on tight turns, narrow bridges without railings, narrow trails with electrified fences on both sides, and all manner of impediments. Yikes!

    karen1956 I am jealous in a good way that you can run. Also our weather is about 10 hours behind you (I'm in the Kansas City area). High tomorrow of 90, then temps drop on Sunday with some rain coming in.

    Heidihill I shouldn't be closed minded about electric bikes so thank you for sharing your experience. Even the bit of research I've done just in case running is off the table for me revealed that finding a bike will be challenging. Bikes, like weights, got snapped up when the pandemic took off and inventory hasn't caught up with demand unless you go for a fairly high end bike. I'm not ready to buy a bike that expensive, although I guess that might change if the news is not good at next week's foot follow up.

    Clare - Haven't been to Block Island in years, but we always bring our bikes when we do go - such a beautiful place, especially in the spring before it is crowded with tourists and mopeds. You are right - getting outside does help with the covid spiral (I like that phrase!). But I also am missing human connection in person - zoom and facetime only go so far. I find I am in a much better frame of mind if I have had an in person conversation with someone (friend or stranger, masks and socially distanced). Isolation is not my friend - so now I am looking for a balance between staying covid free and staying mentally healthy. Lots of places in RI to walk and hike, so just need to reach out wider to my friends and acquaintances to find someone (besides DH!) to go with me.

    Yesterday afternoon DH and I walked the beach, and finished up with lobstah rolls and chowda' from a favorite clam shack - it was delightfully warm (shorts and t-shirts), so we ate our dinner sitting on the seawall watching the waves. So relaxing. And a little sad realizing "Winter is Coming". Our back was to the sidewalk, but an old friend I have not seen in 10 years recognized us and stopped to say hello, and we caught up on our now grown children and current retired lives. Made a mental note to contact her for a socially distanced walk in the future!

    Off to the dermatologist today for a checkup, picking up my new glasses, and maybe a little retail therapy - looking to upgrade my yoga/casual pants that I have lived in the last 6 months, they are all looking a little ratty. I'm looking for cotton/lycra stretchy pants that have a slim fit (but not skin tight leggings), and have pockets - pockets seems to be the hardest thing to find in pants like these. I was wearing LLBean perfect fit pants, but looking for a less baggy silhouette. What do you all wear?

    When I buy yoga pants now, I look for ones with pockets......same with walking/exercise shorts. It's going to be tough if I ever have to spend a whole day in 'real' clothes again!

    Pat, I purposely make sure I spend in person time with people every week (outside; going for a walk, or a picnic, or just standing or sitting far enough apart and talking......which makes me very nervous for winter......). I also go to my exercise classes, which helps me a lot (even though I sneak in at the last minute, stay in my spot and tear out of there immediately when the class is done). I decided talking on the phone with someone is better than Zooming (although Zoom is alright with a group, but I'm pretty much over the novelty of it).I guess Carpe Diem needs to be our motto.

    DH & I checked out a State Park today. We thought we better go while the weather was still good. The weatherman said that next week will be "much, much, much, much cooler". We did some fun hiking on a beautiful day through the gorgeous fall scenery.
