Thanks, all of you. As I told my husband sharing stuff like that with people who haven't run through the cancer mill at least once results in a lot of platitudes and pull yourself up by your bootstrap stuff, with very little acknowledgement that the C word does always hang out in the background. But you all know the drill, you've been there, done that.

I took yesterday off work to recoup mentally because honestly running is my best form of mental health maintenance. Then I put all the research I already did to good use and ordered a bike. It won't get here until the end of the month but that's OK. I was afraid it would take even longer as all fitness equipment is in short supply.

edj3, sorry about your foot, but glad you are getting a referral. So important to have a doc that includes cancer history in a diagnosis.

Ruth, sorry you are under the weather. I know how scary this must be for you, hang in there. Lots of reasons to have a fever (like my experience with Lyme this summer). Glad you are getting tested, just like a biopsy it's the waiting for results that is the hardest!

edj3-hoping you get encouraging news about your foot and a plan to fix it. I don’t wish osteoporosis on anyone, but maybe the cancer treatment pushed you faster towards osteoporosis? Ruth- hope you feel better soon- maybe it’s just the flu and you will feel better in time for Thanksgiving. We went on a weekend trip to hike with some people my DH know. Weather was perfect and there was still some fall colors. I was the slowest hiker as well as the youngest one. But I was so careful coming down the mountain (and all the fallen leaves covering rocks and roots made it tricky). I do have osteoporosis and broke my shoulder 2 years ago so I have to be careful. Anyway, I’m glad I made it to the top (4.5 miles each way and about 3000 feet elevation gain). I will try to post a couple pictures. image

Edj..Big hugs and many positive thoughts for you as you go forward with these next dr appts. I know exactly how much running helps us mentally and can be hard when we go thru these stressors without it. Stay positive and try to keep yourself busy and distracted. I hope that bike gets here soon. and let me know what you ordered. We are looking to buy one this winter also.

Ruth...Hope you feel better and get a negative covid test. Its everywhere is right!

I will run after work tonight and have my long run tomorrow morning with running group. Will fit yoga and strength in today and tomorrow also.

Hoping everyone is well and stays safe. Have a good weekend!

    Beautiful pictures, GoKale!

Bodies are certainly aggravating for the most part, aren't they?! Argh!

After a fevery night (think lying in a pool of sweat), I had DH drive me over for the Covid test. It can be up to 5 business days to get the results. Since I had a flu shot, I'm pretty sure it's not the flu, but may be seasonal allergies/sinus/a cold situation. When it was so nice last week, we did lots of extra hiking and I could tell the mold, burning leaves etc. were starting to get to me (but i was not smart enough to cut back). So we shall see.

edj: How frustrating but so glad you have a referral. Running is such a huge part of your physical and mental life and I am happy you are purchasing a bike as a substitution for now.

GoKale: Beautiful pictures and well worth your hike to get to the top.

Ruth: I have been thinking about you all day and wondering how you are feeling. Wish you could have had a rapid test. Up to 5 days is a long time to wait for your results.

Hi Everyone! The storm Eta blew through yesterday. Lots and lots of rain. Many areas in NC had severe flooding, some people drowned. A very sad day.

Today the sun came out and I walked/ran.

    Beautiful pix, GoKale!

Ruth, thinking of you with fingers crossed as you wait for results.

Wonderland, thought of you with Eta's devastation, flooding & fatalities. Glad the sun came out and you are OK.

Sunny here yesterday but COLD. Walked in the park until a group of high schoolers appeared and started running laps, which prompted me to keep moving over onto the grass to stay ten feet away. The grass is uneven (and some people don't clean up after their dogs uggh so one has to watch for poo) so it's hard to keep a good pace. I did 1.5 laps then walked a while in the neighborhood. Not enough to work off a slice of this week's pie (apple) but the fresh air was nice.

Dear edj3, I have been dealing with a chronic sesamoid fracture in the ball of my left foot beneath my big toe for 10 months. I have seen a podiatrist and an orthopedic surgeon for guidance. I have tried rest, 2 sets of very expensive orthotics, 4 pair of new walking shoes, dancer pads and prednisone pills. Nothing works for more than a day or two. Once I start walking on it for fitness, the pain is my constant companion. I have been miserable because I live to walk my 10K steps a day for exercise and mental balance. Unless I opt for surgery, I am out of options. I see the orthopedic surgeon in December to discuss the next step (if any).

But, there has been a huge bright spot in my summer. I bought my neighbor's bike in May. I started to ride it and it took me a while to build up my stamina. But edj3, I have had amazing workouts on the bike as I now ride for 7-10 miles at a time, weather permitting. I can't tell you the joy it has brought to me. The workout is challenging and I feel so happy when I am done. I am so hoping you will find this to be the case for you. There is something so exhilarating when riding a bike, I feel great, I am outside and I am exercising without the pain. It reminds me of when I was young. The best part is no foot pain after the workout and my thighs are finally getting some definition and my 3 favorite pair of jeans are loose around my thighs now, when they use to be tight, with no change in weight. I will take it!

I became motivated to try a bike after reading how much Claire from Seattle (on this thread) loves it. She is a super rider and can do 60 miles in a day I believe. She has been so kind to share her joys experienced from a good ride it gave me the courage to try it after 40 some years. Now I am hooked.

And Ruth, I hope you make a very speedy recovery with no complications no matter what the test results show. Fevers are miserable and I hate to see such a super athlete down. Take good care Ruth.

Just got in from a 22 mile ride. I can attest to how great cycling makes one feel. Did I mention that I have great looking legs? I don't need any other toning exercises of my lower half. I find it sculpts my shoulders and upper arms and strengthens my lower back muscles as well. This is cycling outside on a road bike. The big secret is that you get an upper body workout staying upright on the bicycle.

Hoping you feel better soon Ruth.

Back to cycling. A helmet liner, gloves, warm socks, and a sturdy windbreaker do wonders for making cycling fun in chilly weather. I cycle all the way to freezing but won't ride when icy out. You can also cycle when warmer than is comfortable walking or running because you generate your own breeze.

Need to get back on the stick and work. I went cycling earlier than usual to beat the rain. Now settled in for the rest of the day feeling extremely virtuous. Skiing soon as it's snowing in the mountains. I can't way because Nordic skiing is my absolute favorite sport. And no, you are seldom cold. Best of all, it's like taking a blow torch to the lard. - Claire

GoKale, those pictures are just beautiful.

Wonderland, what part of NC are you in (if you don't mind saying)?

edj3, did you buy a carbon frame road bike? Oh Ruth....onwards to feeling better! Gokale, nice views. HeidiHill, missing you!

We are now day 11 into lockdown 2.0 with 17 more days to go. Yesterday, the UK's coronavirus death toll was 462 - the highest rise on a Saturday for six months - as almost 27,000 more people tested positive. Sadly, Covd is out of control over here.

Walking in sunshine this afternoon and working on a 1 hour mash-up of different balance tracks to teach when we finally return to face-to-face classes.

LilacBlue, I did. VERY expensive and I'm having a bit of buyer's remorse b/c of the cost. Since it won't get here for a few more weeks, I still have time to cancel if I get super bad news from the orthopedist or the specialist.

Saturdays are low exercise days. DH and I road trip to visit our moms. They are both elderly and live about an hour away. His mom still lives at home with an adult son so she's not alone but is confined to a wheelchair and doesn't cook any more. We can go into his mom's house and visit in-person but keep our distance. We bring something something home-cooked that's yummy and nutritious and make sure there's good food in the fridge. My mom is in a senior living apartment building so also has people around. She cooks but doesn't drive so I visit with my MIL for a while then leave DH there for an hour and take my mom grocery shopping, both of us masked up of course. During nicer weather we could sit outside and visit as they won't let me inside. It's too cold for that now. She's getting kind of depressed and there's nothing I can do.

With the time change, we get back home around dusk. Despite sitting around most of the day I'm too tired to do much in the evening. Read for a while, watch the news, then head to bed. I'm usually up early for a long walk Sunday but it's crappy out today - raining, windy & cold - so not motivated to go out and walk. Did some house cleaning (scrub & sculpt) and am watching the Packers football game. It's halftime soon and will head to the grocery store during the break. We have some baby bella mushrooms in the fridge so am thinking chicken marsala for supper.

Ruth - hope you are feeling better and the test is negative.

    GoKale - gorgeous photos.

Going for a walk with DH. It's barely 6:30 and feels like it should be bedtime!!! We wake up way too early - around 4 and fight to stay in bed till 5. I refuse to get up at 4am!!! Yesterday was windy beyond windy. One of the news people joked that it was the annual Colorado patio furniture swap - everything moves one house east!!! Warming up to 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday then cooling off

Karen, I can relate to the patio furniture swap!! It was very, very windy in Santa Fe day before yesterday. Blew over the patio furniture, blew the cover off the hot tub (because I forgot to clip it down.).

Ruth, thinking about you a lot. Feel better soon!

Badger: Glad to hear that you are still able to visit with your mother and MIL.

cm: I live in the Piedmont area of NC.

Raked leaves in the backyard today and hauled them to the front for over 3 hours. My arms will be sore tomorrow.

Well, I got the Covid results back & unsurprisingly I am positive. I did a virtual appointment with my clinic just to see if I should be doing anything different & really there is nothing to do but isolate, take Tylenol, drink fluids and wait it out. I have been taking my temperature twice a day and borrowed a friend's oximeter so I can keep track of the statistics. The PA also prescribed an inhaler and prednisone, so those might make me feel a little better. I probably have 5 days of feeling rotten to go. Sigh!
