    LilacBlue thank you <3

I've eaten way above my normal calorie amount this week, and it was a choice. My husband made one of my favorite desserts for my birthday (pecan bars, they're vegan and so so good--the crust is a shortbread and they are a lot like pecan pie only the top note isn't sweetness, it's the richness of the shortbread). So bad on the straight and narrow Monday. We're making some special foods for Super Bowl tomorrow (I won't watch, don't care, but the Kansas City Chiefs are in it and of course my husband is from here). One of the recipes is very similar to buffalo chicken wings, only I'll use soy curls instead. Tell you what, I don't feel deprived at all going vegan.

Uh oh, I may need that pecan bar recipe!

Just off the erg, my morning class was an hour and I got 6,800 meters in. It was hard, I think my legs are just heavy from last night's hour long strength workout.

I did overshoot on my weight-regain-PFC plan, so really need to be cutting back on stuff. But Valentine's Day!!!! On the other hand, over-the-top menopause!!!!

There is lovely snow out there, but my balance is too poor to go our skiing. And this weekend the rowing coaches all seem to be doing the virtual Canadian Ski Marathon. Which makes me jealous (ok, not of the 100k skiing in 2 days). We have lovely groomed trails in my town, all volunteer, across private property that is a combination of forest and hay field/pasture. Some day? Anyone else with serious balance problems from chemo-neuropathy?

I hope everyone has a lovely day!

It was -17 with a -43 windchill this morning. I checked just now and we are 'up' to -9.........yikes!!!! I went to Zumba & Pound this morning & will now be inside for the rest of the day. DS, his girlfriend, & their combined 3 dogs are coming over for dinner. DH fishes all summer & we pull out some of his catch every once and awhile & have a fish fry (most years with a large group of people....I guess the good thing about limited gatherings is we'll be able to eat fish longer). Since we'll eat big tonight, I refrained from buying Super Bowl snacks.......which I may regret come tomorrow night!

Yeslama, one of my friends who did Taxol had chemo-neuropathy (I did AC). I know she switched to different shoes for exercise, and eventually it became less of a problem. It was a number of years ago, but I could ask her if she has any tips if nobody here chimes in with some.

questions for you: what kind of exercise do you do?

Do you like it, or do it because you “have to”?

Does posting here encourage you? (Through accountability, or kinship, or whatever?)

this week (almost 4 weeks postop) I biked (recumbent exercise bike) and walked 3 days (inside the mall). More miles & faster times than last week. image

    Plus 4.5 miles walking.

NotAsCalm, here are my answers to your questions:

What kind of exercise do you do? I really like group exercises Zumba, Pound, Pilates, Barre, Yoga, walking in a group etc. although I will walk by myself outside, on a track, or on my treadmill when I need to & have a pile of exercise DVDs too. I think to be really healthy you have to do a variety of exercises; aerobic, toning, and some stretching too.

Do you like it, or do it because you "have to"? When I started, I had to. I made a goal of getting at least 4 hours of aerobic exercise & 4 hours of toning/stretching a week. I logged it and HAD to achieve that goal (in my mind). After awhile it became a habit (give anything new you are trying 6 weeks to become a habit), and now it's an integral part of my life that I don't even want to miss. I basically only do things I really enjoy. (I enjoy different classes for various reasons. Sculpt & PiYo I like because they are hard and I feel like I've really accomplished something after a class, Zumba I love so much that I'd do it even if it had zero exercise benefit.)

Does posting here encourage you? I started posting here so I would be accountable. I'd make myself post every day whether I exercised or not......and of course, I didn't want to say that I hadn't exercised! Now I post because I think of the ladies here to be my friends & it is fun to hang out and see what everyone is up to.

    Here are my answers:

    • What kind of exercise do you do? Running is my drug of choice. I lift weights, do yoga, and when there's ice or snow out there I do HIIT or I row. I don't own or even know how to use a treadmill.
    • Do you like it, or do it because you "have to"? I *love* it. Running is the best way for me to regain my calmness and stay peaceful.
    • Does posting here encourage you? (Through accountability, or kinship, or whatever?) Posting here absolutely does encourage me. I love encouraging others to find the workout they will love as much as I love running and I absolutely love the kind, gentle advice I've gotten here.

The pecan bar recipe is dead easy, btw. Not low calorie in the least :) I do get 18 bars out of each recipe and you might be able to cut them smaller. Here's the link:

    https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-pecan-bars/

If you don't have or can't find brown rice syrup, corn syrup is a substitute you could use.

What kind of exercise: currently mostly rowing (on the erg, is dead of winter here), plus 2 hours a week of strength training (it is a lymphedema prevention through exercise program that I am doing as personal training due to my work schedule). I just finished the popular winter workouts of "post-holing through deep snow" and "shoveling deep snow", neither of which are listed as exercises on my apple watch. I want to run again but I broke my leg badly before I got diagnosed with cancer, and my ankle still doesn't work right and every time I try to run my leg blows up like a balloon. Once my balance is better I want to also get back to x-country skiing and snowshoeing and skating.

Why: Well, I do enjoy it and also because of the whole reduction in risk of recurrence. That part makes me do it even when I don't feel like it.

And being accountable helps, as does just seeing what everyone else is doing! I want to get an exercise bike but have no idea where to put it!

What exercise? - now I only walk, but 6-7 miles a day. I combine this with Tai Chi 'homegrown' exercises. Before Covid I did Silver Sneakers, Chair Yoga and Water Aerobics 3x a week. And yes - you ladies are an inspiration. I console myself that I'm older so I can't match your exploits - but I love reading about what you're doing.

Yeslama - I have neuropathy from Taxotere & Carboplatin. Luckily not much pain, but my feet are basically dead blocks of ice. That means I have to look down to see what's in my path most of the time. I used to just stride out with my head held high. (sigh) In any case - my podiatrist recommended HOKA ONE shoes. It has made all the difference in the world to any exercise.

Claire - I doubt I could ski anymore with my precarious balance. And that includes water skiing. But my "drug of choice" would be to hop & skip the the front of a sailboat under full sail. I don't want to sit in the cockpit. But as my son reminded me - at least I could be on the water.

Happy Belated Birthday Claire and edj! Also, congratulations on your good mammo results, edj!

Happy Anniversary LB! Enjoy your meal together.

Notsocalm: I walk with a little running added in. Been doing it for decades. Prefer to walk by myself as I try to come up with solutions to life's problems (yes, I talk to myself). Can't imagine not doing it. I come here bc I consider all of you my friends and I love reading what everyone is doing.

    Hi All!

Well, I've had an interesting time lately. Will condense it. Had 2nd covid vaccine on Tuesday, January 26. Anticipated fever, etc. That night I did develop fever, chills, and swollen neck lymph nodes on my left side of neck. Had shot in right arm bc mx was left breast. The next day neck pain went to left jaw. Still having fever. On Thursday the left side of my face and ear started turning red throughout the day. Went to er at 1am on Friday suspecting cellulitis. Sure enough, it was. I was admitted and given IV fluids/antibiotics. Meanwhile, having fever and chills on and off. UGH! Saturday I was switched to a stronger antibiotic and it started working. I was dx with afib in 2019 and the last time I had an episode was a year ago. Medication I am taking works good. Except having pain and fever for so many days in a row wasn't good and I had an afib episode Saturday night. Had great care in the hospital. Normal heart rhythm returned Sunday, no more fever, and I was discharged Monday of this week.

Assured by 3 different doctors that the cellulitis was not a side effect of the shot. I've never had cellulitis. I've never had a reaction to a vaccine. Don't know why it happened. Dr. Wonderland is calling it a side effect to a side effect.

Feeling much better now and getting stronger every day. Even went to the park where I walk and slowly walked 2 laps. Felt fabulous! and I wanted to do more but knew to take it easy. I see my cardiologist and PCP on Monday for f/u appointments.

FYI: I would get the vaccine all over again as I think it's a HUGE part to getting us back to normal. Going to talk to PCP about taking an antibiotic prior to taking another one when it's decided what schedule we need to be on for the covid vaccine in the future.

Wonderland - Sorry about the cellulitis. I don't allow any shots in my arms. I get all my shots either in my butt or my thigh. I got the 1st Covid shot in my thigh. I have mild breast & truncal LE. I carry antibiotics whenever I travel just in case of a cellulitis occurrence. Glad you were close to home.

    Lilac - happy anniversary

Wonder - glad you are better - how scary.

    edj- thanks for the recipe

calm - I've been a walker for years - walk 2 -3 times/day - the walks are 25 - 30 minutes each. I bought a Cubii several months ago and use it for an hour in the morning when I get up. Too dark and cold to walk outside this time of year before work. I bought a pedometer years ago (before Fitbits) and the trackers are what keep me going - my goal is 15K steps/day.

Good early morning....Got up at 4:30am - get frustrated tying to staying bed till 5:30 tossing and turning. One day, sleeping in to 6 is my next sleep dream. Six hours used be a goal but i am at 6 hours - 10:30pm to 4:30am! So far 75 minutes on the Cubbi. Will go a little bit longer than stop by 6:30

Donating blood at 7:45 - when I went 2 weeks ago, my B/P was too long - seems every other time I get deferred. Hopefully this time is a go.

    Have a great Sunday.

Wonderland, OMG so sorry to hear of your bout with cellulitis. Glad you are feeling better and stronger!

Lilac, that cake looks wonderful. My DH is baking his way through the pandemic and has been trying his hand with tiramisu. SO GOOD. Here's the recipe.

    Classic Tiramisù

NotAsCalm, here are my answers to your questions:

    1. What kind of exercise do you do? My go-to exercise is walking. Really enjoyed strength training until gym closed due to COVID. They've re-opened but I'm not ready to go back.

    2. Do you like it, or do it because you "have to"? I love walking for the exercise, fresh air, and community (I know all the dog walkers and their dogs LOL). Music helps me move.

    3. Does posting here encourage you? (Through accountability, or kinship, or whatever?) Yes, because I know a lot of the people here either virtually or IRL. I'm mellower than some of the athletes who post here, which is a good example for someone just getting started. I see the future of sedentary people and do not want to be one of them!

Yesterday was a mom day so today is a treadmill day. It's crazy cold so I am very happy I invested in a treadmill. Also need to spend some time on housework, aka Scrub & Sculpt.

OMG Wonderland, I'm grateful to read that you feel so much better today. My husband is lying down as he had his 1st.vaccine yesterday and now w/stomach upset. Yes, Americanize if you want. Wonderland & Badger, the cake is heavy with cocoa powder and yogurt and I'm not good enough at cooking to know how to lighten it up. Thank you Badger for the recipe! Thank you all for the anniversary wishes for myself & Mr. B. The dinner was good although with dh not feeling good - slightly stilted celebration. Snowed all day here and kind of a cold grainy-wet drizzle at the moment. Here is the little happy chappy Roo and I made this afternoon.

Happy Anniversary, Lilac. Sorry your DH is under the weather, but glad he got his first shot!

Alice, glad you are on the mend. Very scary!

Bitterly cold here again. I did an indoor walking DVD & Zoom Yoga. I was out of dental floss (I am a religious flosser!). DH volunteered to go get some & came back with a bunch of snacks, so my good intentions of not eating junk food during the Super Bowl are out the window. Ha!

I made buffalo soy curls (very much like buffalo chicken wings only you know, no animal products) with a vegan "blue cheese" dressing and dang, it's good! I don't give a rip about football, even though it's Kansas City in the game. But it's good for KC and my husband enjoys it so go Chiefs! Me? I'll be reading a book. Oh and drinking a beer.

I think "drive with cake" is a rule of the road I could be down with.

Today I rowed, long and slow. Thought I would get out my slide board and get started on that to improve my stamina and balance for skating next year? I can hope! But in the end I just rowed. And watched "Dig". Not all of it, but will watch again tomorrow while rowing.

We didn't get much more than a dusting of snow today. The storm went well to our south. Looks like Tuesday we may get a few inches, but we shall see. No shovel-robics likely for me this week.

Didn't watch the game but it was on in the background....awful commercials and halftime. Made our traditional super bowl dinner - grilled chicken wings and potato knishes. Lots of wings left over went into the freezer for another dinner.

Getting up at 4:30 instead of fighting to stay in bed till 5:30 and doing 60-75-90 minutes on the Cubii - the house is peaceful and quiet, different than during the day.

The cold weather is back, but not as brutal as by Ruth. By end of week nights will be below zero. Snow in the mountains, but not much if any by me.

    Have a good Monday.

I enjoyed the Puppy Bowl much more than the Super Bowl! The game was on at my house, I would occasionally look up from my book but was very underwhelmed by the whole thing.

Minus 20 this morning......I am now officially missing my winter vacations to warmer climes! I will venture out to Pound & Zumba. I should start cleaning out closets. Blah!

NotAsCalm- I make them from scratch - I have a very easy dough recipe and I only make potato. I've been making them for years and years - I remember as a little girl my late grandmother making them. The recipe is from a 45+ year old cookbook. Let me know if you want the recipe. The only mix I use is Duncan Hines dark fudgey brownies. Everything else I bake and cook is from scratch. Tonight I'm making vegetarian "chicken" egg rolls.I guess I best get off her and get busy cooking!!

Don't remember if I mentioned before that SIL has been sick so if anything is repetitive, please forgive me. It started out in October as gall bladder issues that never resolved. Now its been one thing after another!!! SIL has been in the hospital for 2 weeks. Some days the only "doctor" that comes in are medical students - today was a year 1 med student!!! DD is so annoyed. SIL celebrated his 39th birthday in the hospital feel quite ill. Its seems to be one thing after another, but thank G-d not Covid. I sure wish I could go be with my DD but borders are closed and if I went I would have to quarantine in a hotel for 3 days at my expense then if I test negative for Covid I could quarantine at home (hope that would mean my daughter's home). It would drive me crazy to not be able to even go for a walk. DD can see he husband by appointment only. His parents can't visit. I feel so bad for them all.

    In person again tomorrow.

    Stay warm, safe and healthy.

45 mins treadmill on Sunday to side A of Road Trip 95. I remember now, I was driving to Colorado for my friends' wedding. Nice memory. Also did some housework.

Yesterday was a paperwork management day. Had amassed a mound of stuff to shred, file, and send to accountant for income tax prep. My hubby sold his biz and retired last year so there's a lot of paperwork to compile. Once upon a time, I could do my taxes on the EZ form and remit myself. Of course, back then I was single and broke, so it's better now albeit more complicated. Will spend some time on the treadmill today. Music selection TBD. :-)
