Going to brag just a second--today is my youngest grandchild's birthday, she's one. So I made her a doll with a dress and little fuzzy shoes and my husband made a scaled down octopus for the doll that matches the full size one he made for her for Christmas. And I made her a dress that matches her doll's dress.

    That is so cute, edj!

Pound this morning, Zumba tonight. We missed the snow but the windchill is below zero so it's quite unpleasant out there!

Wow edj, that is so wonderful. We knew you were talented, handstands and all, but this is so cheerful. Thanks for sharing. Just back from lunch time Yin yoga where I definitely pulled a long muscle on the inner thigh of right leg...ugh. TT

edj: I love the doll AND the dress!

Today I did my one-hour strength training session then rowed for just 15 minutes. 2500 meters. Still have 14,000 more to go to meet my goal of 100,000 for the month, and am about 10,000 meters behind my arch-nemesis (lol -- aka best buddy in our rowing group, stem-cell transplant recipient dealing with chronic graft-vs-host disease) on the January challenge, so gonna have to row hard this week to catch up!

edj - love the doll and the dress - very talented! When my oldest was a baby, I made her a couple outfits, till I realized it was more expensive to sew than buy - maybe if I'm blessed with grandchildren I'll start sewing again. My late mother had me take sewing lessons in junior high and I sewed quite a bit through high school.

    Edj3, so cute!

We got maybe 4 inches of snow overnight and it's still snowing & blowing. There are drifts up to a foot! Shoveled the walk to retrieve the newspaper before the plow came through and buried it. Going to wait for DH to get up before tackling any more. The plow deposited two feet of hard-packed snow at the end of the driveway and at least a foot of extra snow on the sidewalk. We have nice neighbors with snowblowers ... maybe one of them will take pity on us and use their machines to help us out. Otherwise I foresee a hard slog ahead.

Badger - we are predicted only 1-2 inches but I doubt we'll get any. We really need the moisture. The SW mountains got upwards of 2 feet over the week-end and I think they are getting more this week. We are getting COLD temps today - 20s with wind chills in the teens to single digits.

    Stay safe and stay warm.

Thanks, Karen, I'd send some snow your way if I could. That storm swung north and we will wind up with 10-12 inches by the time it stops snowing this afternoon.

Got outside around 7 AM and shoveled for an hour. No neighbors with snowblowers but the 12-YO neighbor girl came over to help for the last half-hour. They called off school today so she got some fresh air & exercise plus a $10 bill. We had eight inches by that time and it's still snowing. Plow just came through again so there's another round of Shovel & Sculpt in my future but that can wait a while.

We got the tiniest dusting of snow, just enough to make a mess. As I posted on Strava, snow day means row day.

Karen, sewing is most definitely not a way to save money. It used to be when I was in my 20s. But the cost of patterns sky rocketed as did the notions, and fabric also. These days because I'm pretty small, it's far cheaper for me to get clothes at H&M, Old Navy, Uniqlo, places like that. I hate that it's fast fashion but absolutely cannot spend the money and also the time sewing my own clothes.

So the doll was a labor of love, and one that tells both my son and DIL how much I love them.

Here's Grace in the dress with her big octopus (made by my husband) and her doll with the little octopus. I was tickled that Grace actually owned slippers so close to the ones we made for the doll.

The neck is a bit big but that's because babies' heads are large. Amanda said it was pretty difficult to get the dress on over Grace's noggin. All those brains!

    What a darling picture!

The snow missed us but my phone tells me it's 1 degree with a minus 15 windchill. Brrrrr.......Barre Sculpt & some sort of indoor aerobic activity for me today.

Any picture with not one, but TWO octopuses automatically goes into the adorable realm for me... and then there is the very adorable little girl too! Love it, edj!

We got several inches of snow here, as was said, just enough to make the roads messy. They did get 16plus inches up at the ski resort in the mountains, which I am sure is making them happy...much needed. Of course, the sun has come out and in Northern New Mexico that means that soon the snow will melt from the roads, even though it won't get above freezing today. It also means: time for me to head out on a walk.

edj - Grace is adorable. And truly a labor of love!! You're right about sewing these days and in the 80's but when I was in junior high is was cheaper to sew than buy - but that may have been because my father worked in the fabric industry - minis were in style so it didn't take much fabric. I dislike shopping in stores (even before Covid) mostly cuz I don't like trying on clothes. I'm a skirt and top person so its easy to order online - or when I go to Israel I shop - haven't bought too much in the past year - one of my favorite jean skirts is hanging on by threads - I have a couple iron-on patches on the back so I can keep wearing it - literally it will be garbage by the time I quit wearing it. I used to be much more "creative" but since its just the two of us, I don't bake like I used to - and working remotely, no one to bring it to - I used to mail my late MIL cookies. as well as my kids - or actually I would bake and bring to my kids when I would go visit.

We got about 4 inches or so of snow - soft powder - we've swept the driveway 3 times through out the day - think its pretty much done and by the week-end it will be near 60!!

DD#2 was texting me this morning about getting a new phone and maybe an iPad for school and it was like not when I get back to Denver but more like "if" - it's so defeating to not be able to see my kids. They are as frustrated as we are - being in different countries makes it harder.

Heard on the news at dinner time that the state epidemiologist says we'll be social distancing, wearing masks etc till at least June 1st. And now the governor is saying once teachers are two weeks post both vaccines, no more quarantine if positive Covid cases in schools. He says schools are low risk and kids need to be in school! but most teachers won't be vaccinated till at least end of April so the school year will be near over.

    Sweet dreams!

    Busy day.

    Stay safe and stay warm.

We got maybe an inch more snow overnight. Today will be super cold but then tomorrow we'll get your weather, Karen, as it will be in the 40s.

Today I finished the glute challenge (YAY!)--looking for the next one, thinking about going back to work on my pull up. I had it a couple of years ago after being on crutches for 10 weeks for my fractured pelvis. The lumpectomy and radiation put paid to that though. The only consideration for me on this one is my left arm is still jacked up so I will need to be OK with stopping if it hurts. I guess it's good to practice self-control.

Self control is one of the hardest things to exercise! Loopy

We got just enough snow to make things slippery so now it is very cold AND slick. I met up with two of my Wednesday Walking friends & walked around the track at our fitness center this morning, did a 30 minute Mat Pilates at noon & will go back for Zumba tonight. When I painted by bathroom two weeks ago, I had decided NOT to paint the inside of the linen closet. But every time I opened that closet, it has bugged the heck out of me.... so I spent the afternoon unloading and painting. It will need a second coat tomorrow & hopefully everything will be back in place by this time Friday. Fun, fun!

We are set for our second shot on Friday. DH called the facility today and they suggested picking up the permission form tomorrow to save time and save congestion in the lobby. Thankfully the place is only 5 minutes away. DH said he would go get them tomorrow. I will feel much better 2 weeks after the shot but know that we are not out of the woods. Start in the schools in person on Tuesday and then in mid February, I'll add Wednesday - so 2 days remote and 2 days in person. At least I have my own space/office and I see kids one to one. Plus I do some testing for a couple schools that only have SW. All adult meetings are zoom or google meets. I'm so tired of the computer but that is the only way I see my colleagues!!! We don't go see friends and since it's gotten cold out, less people are outside walking. In the summer and fall we saw our neighbors walking and would chat from opposite sides of the street.

My DD#1 told me tonight that her 70 year old FIL tested positive for Covid today. I'm sure he's worried as he lost his older brother (78+)to Covid a couple weeks ago after 10 months of being in the hospital and nursing home. My daughter was with her in-laws over Shabbat (as was my SIL and his 93+ year old grandmother). She doesn't know when his symptoms started but neither her in-laws or the provincial health department has told her to quarantine. She can't get a break. My SIL has been in the hospital since Sunday morning (not Covid) - she says the care is awful as they are overloaded with Covid patients. It took about 36 hours after he was admitted till he go a bed - waited in a little curtain off area in the ER. He's been having Gall Bladder issues since October and they kept changing his diet and las Thursday they put him on a liquid diet to see if it helped with the pain. He went to the ER on Sunday morning in agony and pain level about a 9 or 10 and was admitted with the start of an obstructed bowel. The hospitals by her are often overloaded and takes time to get a bed. Not sure how long he'll be in the hospital. His 39th birthday is Tuesday and it breaks my heart that he will not be able to enjoy his birthday. Hoping he'll at least be home by then. My daughter has to make an appointment to visit him and only twice/week. I so wish I could be with her - but with quarantine and closed borders it is not possible. Needless to say I'm stressed and I'm worried.

Fell twice walking this afternoon - first fall was on the driveway and the second on the sidewalk about 3/4 through our walk. I didn't walk after dinner - worried about falling again. We got just enough snow yesterday to make a mess of things, but main roads were good. Its supposed to warm up tomorrow so hoping the rest of the snow melts.

I turn 65 in May - yes, I'm just a baby!!! Almost daily I get something regarding Medicare. Yesterday my PCP's office called about the Medicare plans they take, asked if I had questions and then sent me an email. All very helpful. I will sign up for Part A by my b'day but not anything else till DH retires this time next year as my health insurance is through his work. I will probably go with a medicare advantage plan as I've been with the same pcp office for over 15 years and I like the practice and they don't take traditional medicare. One of the plans they take is through the teacher's retirement system and it is a good plan. I'm not about to look for a new pcp.

    Sweet dreams

Edj3, your granddaughter is a cutie-pie! Congrats on completing the glute challenge.

Karen, sorry to hear of family med issues. I empathize with your worry & stress. Glad you didn't hurt yourself by falling. Yes, Medicare ins providers will bombard you.

Mom is doing well enough that she was moved out of rehab into assisted living. She's still not back to where she was physically or mentally, and probably won't be again, but the skilled nursing care made enough progress that Medicare would no longer pay for rehab. Private pay is insanely expensive. Not sure what the NH cost, we "only" had to pay the Part A co-insurance that kicked in after day 20, but the AL is going to be six grand a month. Even with LTC insurance and VA benefit for the surviving spouse of a veteran, her money will last four more years. I'm trying not to borrow trouble, and who knows what will happen, but if she lives to age 95 we will have some hard decisions to make. Fund the cost ourselves and jeopardize our own retirement security, or put her on Medicaid which likely means moving to a new facility. I'll be like Scarlett O'Hara and think about that tomorrow. Fiddle-dee-dee.

Spent yesterday going through the storage unit to find items mom requested for her AL room. There are a LOT of boxes and had to open most of them to find what she wanted. Brought her recliner, two lamps with matching shades, and a couple of small side tables. May go back today for some more items as it's going to be sunny and the roads will be good. She won't need her bed, dresser, sofa, or kitchen items, so going to have to figure out what to do with them. The storage unit is paid through the end of April so have time to decide.

Karen, I am so glad that you are getting that second shot Friday. At least that will be one less thing to worry about. Sorry about the medical issues for the others in your family. Not being able to go and help out is so difficult. My DH has been walking outside all winter & took such as nasty spill that he broke down and jointed my fitness center (which has a very large track to walk around). Before Covid he belonged to a small gym but hasn't felt safe going there now....too enclosed & crowded, even with the machines spread out etc.)

Badger, I went through similar times with my dad so know how hard and sad it is.

I painted the inside of the linen closet yesterday & will do a second coat today. I already like it 100% better, so it's worth the effort. It will be slightly warmer today. We will probably do something with the grandpuppies, maybe bring them to the Dog Park so they can run and run. Barre Scuplt and Dance2fit tonight.

You will be very glad that you did the linen closet, Ruth, and be reminded of this every time you reach in for a fresh towel. I call that time well spent! So glad you have dogs to take to the place of extreme joy - the off-leash dog park.

I am hoping to get up skiing tomorrow. It's been snowing in the mountains all week so expecting fresh powder and the best conditions in 2 year. My birthday ski trip is next weekend so I need to get some miles in if possible. Only so many perfect days. I pick up my tire chains for the rental today as won't get my car back until after my ski trip is over (I will be gifting them to my friend whose car they should fit). My super-warm cold weather jacket has arrived, so I am prepared for the much colder temps of the Methow Valley.

My sister is facing much the same caregiving duties with her husband that Badger describes. So sad, as I think this was preventable, or at least for someone in their early 70s. We are about the same age. I see exercise as an investment in your future: the same as putting money in retirement accounts (which I am still doing as still working). My sister has been exercising religiously, but suspect her outdoor walks will be curtailed.

When not skiing, I have been walking 4-5 miles each day plus weights and crunches. Boring and simple, but effective. I have all the outdoor gear which helps a lot.

The rental car I am driving is perfect for someone who lives in a non-snowy area (including where I live), but not for someone with an active lifestyle. Perfect for Costco runs, but not for ski trips. Zero fun to drive, but gets you there. I can't wait to get Rexxie back.

I think I will most likely be getting the Covid jab in the next month or so as will be in the second group. While I am a bit concerned about getting Covid, for me it's even more about being able to travel again, and my August cycling trip in Scotland. Cycing Idaho will not be a problem at all as it's open right now. I can stay with my friend Susan, her family, and two dogs.

Wish me glorious sunshine and great snow tomorrow. Unless there is something weird going on, will do the full 10 miles or so, with the added bonus of walking at least a mile back to my car. We shall see how well my right thumb works these days. - Claire

Ruth, love the dog pic. LOL at frozen water bowl.

Claire, wishing you glorious sunshine and great snow!

Treadmill is boring but effective. Did 30 mins to stretch out my legs and get some blood flowing when I got home from another mom-stuff trip.

DH stayed home this time, which was OK. I only had light items to fetch, and sometimes ya just need a break from the people in your house. Winking

edj, what a cute matching duo! badger, that's a lot of money for AL. My father (also a veteran) was in AL at some point but hated it so he bailed out and moved back to the Philippines. Of course that was a lot more affordable and even without insurance medical costs were reasonable. That with round the clock care. I may have to do something similar but DH may need some convincing. In the summer I will need to apply for my social security benefits as well as pension plans from former workplaces. Can't believe I'll be officially a pensioner this year.

Still doing Zumba online and walking the dog offline.

Assisted living is so expensive in the US. My MIL is in a nursing home, it's good but not like super top of the line or anything and it's like $5K a month? She's nearly out of money and when that happens, this home will take Medicaide and then she will have to have a roommate.

I took the day off and went skiing as promised to be by far the best day. A bit cloudy with some snow showers, but the best conditions in at least 2 years. The long downhill was super fun to ski today. I can't quite say the same thing about the half mile walk back to my car when done. Almost 10 miles of skiing, and over a mile of walking, carrying my skis.

The great news is that I will be getting my car back on Monday!!! I wonder if I can return the tire sox (latest in chains)?

Attaching some pictures. Totally have my skiing groove back Happy - Claire
