TT, glad for your good mammo results. Together, congrats on getting to the gym.

Karen, positive thoughts going to your family. If your SIL has to have gall bladder surgery, I hope it goes well and helps clear up his health issues. ((hugs))

Dragon, Purim is at the end of the month. Karen made her Hamentashen early to mail out. I have always loved the story of Queen Esther.

Shovel & Sculpt Friday morning (one 15-minute bout) and again this morning (three 10-minute bouts). We only got an inch on Friday but four inches (so far) today. The temps really dropped last night and it is too cold to stay outside very long. As Ruth said, it's warmer inside the freezer than outside the house. We're skipping the trip to see our moms today. Snow + bitter cold = stay home. I took some stuff to my mom yesterday as it was sunny and the roads were clear in the afternoon.

Someone was looking for an easy Valentine's dessert. This recipe was in our Weds newspaper. I cut it in half and made it last night in an 8x8 pan. Yummy!

    George Washington's Easy Cherry Crisp

Destined to serve 12-16, yet simple enough to cut in half, shared a long time ago by Home Economics teacher Michelle Ferguson, Hanford West High School in Hanford, California. She comments that it is "very easy" to make and is a "good alternative to all the Valentine candy you'll be eating."

2 21-ounce cans cherry pie filling

    1 cup flour

    ½ cup butter

    ½ cup sugar

    ½ cup brown sugar

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour pie filling into a 9x13-inch baking pan. In a small bowl combine flour and butter. Blend with a pastry blender or a fork. Add sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix well. Sprinkle over cherries. Bake 30 minutes. If desired, serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Yum, that looks delicious but I would have to leave the house to buy cherry pie filling. What a dilemma!!

Ruth - nothing for my SIL is easy surgery wise. Anesthesia is very risky for him. They have been trying to treat him without surgery. Also he has a lot of scar tissue from abdominal surgery 20+ years so can't do it laparoscopic. Talked to DD last night and he is leaning toward the surgery. Will talk to him today. We talked on Friday he said surgery, if he went that route would be Monday or Thursday

It's well; below zero most likely broke a record low. Yesterday only got up to 4 or 5. We still went for 3 walks bundled up in snow pants, boots, snow hat and layer and layer under heavy down coats. Actually stayed toasted warm. Will walk again today.

Stay warm, stay safe and stay healthy.

Karen, I hope SIL's team of doctors includes an anesthesiologist. There are more choices of anesthesia than in the past and I hope they come up with just the right one if he decides on the surgery route (which sounds from your description like it may be the only way to go to solve his problems). Hard and scary choices.

We are still really, really, really cold here (-44 with the windchill this morning). I will do some sort of indoor aerobic active & go to Barre Sculpt.

It is bizarre, I was sure I posted here earlier but I don't see it!

I hope everyone is staying safe in all kinds of difficult weather.

I started my exercise (I sure felt it, even though my watch somehow thought my heart rate of 138 when I came back in was just normal and not exercise. Whatever!) Was post-holing through the snow and raising a heavy shovel above my head and trying to knock of snow and ice curls that were threatening to take out some windows. The ice near the kitchen window was VERY thick (two roof-lines come together there and they are not well insulated) and needed a lot of work.

Then a bit of mild housecleaning, then rowed over 10,000 meters on the erg. Now trying to melt some chocolate for choclate-covered strawberries. This morning I made popovers and whipped maple butter for my sweetheart :).

Stay safe, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Snow shoveling and ice chopping are brutal! You deserve those chocolate covered strawberries and popovers, Dragon. I found a recipe for Blueberry Cheesecake Cookies with Lemon Glaze once it warms up enough for me to go to the grocery store (or I run out of food!).

Ooooo Ruth those sound heavenly! I am trying so hard not to bake because we both need to be watching what we eat (especially DH< who gained A LOT of wweight while being my caregiver and being afraid) and getting in shape -- both for health, AND to look hot at the two kids' weddings that are happening this year Smile But I may need to bake a TON of cookies to take in to folks at work :)

I ran a bunch of errands and then went for a long walk yesterday afternoon, followed by hauling a bunch of wood from our woodpile at the side of the house to our covered front porch, all in anticipation of today's storm... Definitely the worst we've had this winter: a fair amount of snow, very heavy winds (didn't quite get to blizzard conditions here in Santa Fe but it did to the south), and COLD. Ok, not cold like Ruth's cold (Ruth, I don't know how you you do it!) but low teens, -1 or so with the wind chill. It may hit zero tonight.

So, not much exercise today. Hubby did shovel the walk, but I am not going anywhere for a day or two anyway (the roads are a real mess!). I did do a bit of housework and Hubby and I had a nice Valentine's brunch in front of the fire, and hung out by the fire reading most of the day. Making his favorite dinner tonight (lamb chops, roast potatoes, salad, chocolate cake...). Sort of a nice break. Sun is supposed to come out tomorrow before another round of snow hits Tuesday. I am thinking of taking the snowshoes out for a spin tomorrow if it warms up enough.

    Stay safe and warm, all!

We are uncharacteristically snowed in here in the Western Washington lowlands. I got out for a ski yesterday and a trudge today with snow sticking to my skis. Marvelous exercise, but seriously lacking in the fun quotient. No matter, because I had a wonderful 2.5 hour Zoom chat with an admirer in the UK, and I got a miserable work item off my list. I am glad that I didn't try to go skiing in the mountains as the grooming machine developed an ailment, and then there were traffic pile-ups along the route back.

I will count the 2-mile trudge in wet snow on my skis as exercise. This included climbing over snow banks with my skis. Happy to be indoors. Especially, since I have leftover Shepherd's Pie (which I made last night) and fresh roasted asparagus for dinner. I also have divine chocolates from Brugge which I had the foresight to buy a few days ago.

Shepherd's Pie was made with lamb from the Methow Valley that I got one week ago. I saw the sheep from a distance and met the sheep dog who was very nice to me, but think quite fearsome to anyone (such as a wolf or cougar) getting too close to the sheep (Anatolian Shepherd).

Wish I could share the pie with everyone. Just amazing, and even looks better than the recipe photo. The magic ingredients are the leeks and Cheddar cheese in the potato topping. Yes, it is a wine evening! - Claire

No Valentine's candy here. Made fruit salad instead. That looks delish, Claire!

karen, good luck to your SIL on deciding to have surgery or not.

Valentine's snow walk with DH in the woods. We saw a rescue dog from Russia on our walk. He came a long way...I wonder if he has a Russian passport. Ours has an EU passport as a Romanian rescue. For sure that Russian dog was not fazed by record freezing temps.

It's not warm here, temp is -6F, wind chill is -25. Our thermostat has a known issue where it will stop working--and it stopped overnight. Bad time for that for sure. There's a way to fix it and my husband did. But I told him we need one that works, no fixes needed. If he weren't home, I'd be screwed and in weather like this, it's more than screwed. It's dangerous.

I made pecan mocha truffles yesterday, recipe is from WaPo and boy they are good. I also got my first dose of the vaccine, arm is sore but otherwise I'm good. Next dose is March 14 (my younger son's birthday).

I was going to do yoga this morning but because of the thermostat issue, it was way too cold to think of having bare feet. So I did HIIT and legs instead.

It's warming up to zero today. Whoo Hoo! I went to Pound this morning & will do a 30 minute Mat Pilates at noon. I am signed up for a Zumba class at 5:30 but will probably have to cancel. I think I have a cavity under a filling & the dentist has an opening at 4:30. Blah!!!

Heidi - my girlfriend in the UK adopted a dog from eastern Europe forget what country.

Update on my SIL. Gall bladder surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Anesthesiologist made a surprised visit this morning and also emailed his specialist regarding what special anesthesia is necessary. Anesthesiologist said to SIL that he has the best team taking care of him in the OR. He is feeling more reassured, but of course still nervous since its surgery. Unfortunately, DD can not visit today and can't be with him before surgery. They are working on getting permission for her to see him in the ICU.

Yesterday the high was +1F. Low last night was around -15F or so before wind chill. When I got up this morning it was about -8F. We now have a heat wave +19 with the sun so it wasn't so cold walking a bit ago.

Thanks for all your well wishes for my SIL. I know I'll be nervous till the surgery is over.

Tomorrow is a professional development day - I have only one zoom meeting and the rest are asynchronous training - I have 2 and then try to catch up on required paperwork. May try to do one of the trainings this afternoon.

    Stay warm

Sharing the food porn from Valentines Day takeaway box from our favorite restaurant...have pictures of hearts of palm salad, veal scallopini with crab meat and veg, and V'day torte (big enough for 6 or 8 slices)....we didn't even touch the lobster bisque and lobster mac-n-cheese that came with the dinner for two...that is dinner tonight. Plus will have a third meal of the left overs of veal and lob mac-n-cheese...over the top

I have today off for Presidents' Day, so I have already had my hour long personal training session. Then rowed for 1,000 meters as a cool-down.

Some chores around then house then it will be time to start making dinner! Yoghurt curry (Gujarati), braised bitter gourd, brown rice, dal. Not sure yet what dal to make....

Snowing lightly here, has warmed up into the 20s. The bad news is the weather line keeps moving north, so now our snow has gone down and chance of freezing rain and sleet mixing in is going up. Yuck.

Hope everyone stays safe and warm!

Yum, TT! I did get the ingredients for the Blueberry Cheesecake Cookies so will report back once they have been made and samples. I'm off to the dentist. Blah!

Karen, it sounds like SIL has an excellent team who are on top of things. Hoping surgery will go well and he will have a quick and complete recovery. Keep us in the loop.

We should get above zero today, first time in a few days. And the wind chill should start to be less of an issue. We've had planned rolling blackouts here as the grid is pretty overwhelmed. My house hasn't had one yet but others I know have, and there have been some unplanned power outages. The kitties are super snuggly because of the cold (I don't mind that in the least).

Today is more rowing (so dull) and then I think I'll do a yoga for runners practice. If you've never heard of Erin Sampson, check her out. I like her so much more than Adrienne, she's not so goofy and she's very matter of fact. I like her Yoga for Runners practice but she's got a lot to choose from. Click here for her YouTube page.

edj - glad you've had your power the whole time

    Ruth, the cookies look good

SIL is having gallbladder surgery in less than half hour. Needless to say, both he and DD are scared and nervous. I'm glad today is a non-student contact day and that except for one zoom meeting at 2-3 today, I"m doing 2 different asynchronous training. Can't be with DD and SIL due to Tredueau's quarantine rules.

    Stay warm and stay safe.

Ugh I spoke too soon. We lost power this morning and clearly it wasn't part of the planned rolling blackouts as those were scheduled to be 30 to 60 minutes. Ours was out for four and a half hours :(
