Yikes, Wonderland, that is a crazy video! We have wildlife in our semi-rural neighborhood but nothing like that.

Beautiful morning! Nice and cool. Perfect weather for a morning walk. Today I will be cleaning and freezing the berries we picked yesterday.

S, some neighbor-friends have convinced my husband and I to join them in participating in Run Across America's Summer Splash -- and the fact that they managed to convince my husband to do it is significant! So although neither of us will be running -- we are solidly walkers, and he hikes -- hopefully that will help keep me on track this summer! I've told my husband I'd love it if he'd commit to at least one nice walk a week someplace we don't normally get to walk/see. Between state parks and arboretums and bike trails, I think we'll have fun getting out and visiting new places.

Do or did any of you run or jog with tissue expanders in? I was just starting to feel like maybe it wouldn't hurt to try jogging, but then I had my last fill and now it's too sore for me to imagine it.

Another nice, cool morning for a walk. Need to do some weeding but I don't want to start because weeding is a Zen thing for me (especially pulling those long strings of creeping Charlie) and I often lose track of time when immersed in the hunt. It's also fruitless when the ground is so dry and hard. The weeds just break off instead of coming out by the roots. We are supposed to get some rain Thurs into Fri so will postpone a few days.

saltmarsh, I did not have reconstruction after BMX so no info to share. Hopefully, someone else will chime in.

Salt, lumpectomy here; but I'd say if it hurts, don't do it!

Walking Women this morning, Zumba tonight.

So, I used to be responsible for morning dog-walks and any mid-day dog walks, and then would occasionally either cover nighttime ones or accompany my husband and doggo on them. But, in the interest of getting more exercise, I've started doing their 20-minute (sometimes longer) nighttime route with them. Having done it for a week now, I'm not sure why I used to balk at it. So, that's a win.

Yesterday my PT had me start lifting weights. Don't get it twisted; we're talking 5lbs., but still, it's progress. And she also had me doing resistance band work, all of which should help me get back to my Pilates reformer classes that I loved so much! She also gave me instructions for pool exercises, so the next time I have a chance to hit the pool, I can try those.

Today I'm going to the local Y to talk with the director of the Livestrong program and see if it might be a match for me. The primary reason I'd like to try it is because even though I'm an introvert, exercising is one of the few things I prefer to do socially. It makes the time go by quicker, and I'm not averse to light friendly competition if someone is up for it.

If my kid has not already swum by the time he comes here this afternoon, and if it's warm enough, then I'll be taking him to the pool. Otherwise, I'll do a workout video of some sort here.

Hope you are all having a good day in your corner of the world!

Sounds like you are doing great, Saltmarsh!

This morning I watered & went to Pound. In a little while we are taking off on a Humans Only 'Field Trip'. I'll report back later!

My early-morning walk was cut short by a thunderstorm but not complaining as we desperately need the rain. I did get in an extra bonus walk yesterday afternoon. My car started to overheat just as I hit town, back from visiting mom. I pulled into the service station just as the gauge hit the red. Looks like the water pump died. So grateful to have gotten back to town and my car to the mechanic, about a mile from my house, and not have been stranded on the road.

Badger, so glad you didn't get stranded esp in this heat.

Salt, resistance bands make for good workouts, I love mine. And whatever weight you're using is great, that's how you build your strength and avoid injury!

Ruth, I've decided you are the Energizer Bunny!

I got in a short run this morning, it was miserably hot and humid and I was tired. Common sense broke out and I called it done at 3 1/4 miles. Yesterday was all upper body repeats w/ my personal trainer and I am loving working with him.

I did 9 holes of golf at 9 AM this morning with my league (and had to set my alarm to make the 8:30 arrival), it was a gorgeous day in my corner of NC with low humidity - rare for this time of year. I got my second birdie of a lifetime :-) I did light weights last night, I had a late meeting working (working part time) but wanted to get some strength training in so did as much of my routine in front of the TV as I felt up for, while my husband zoned out. I know the online video I use so well that I can watch it with the sound down and TV at the same time. I look forward to getting back to a gym at some point, but haven't been convinced yet that the group classes near me are worth it - some day!

We got at least an inch of rain overnight. Just spent 2.5 hours weeding as it's finally moist enough to pull the little devils out by the roots. It was a good workout and I'm a happy tired from bending, stretching, and using core muscles. Garden & Sculpt. :-) Will get the South side of the house tomorrow morning. It was overcast this morning but now the sun is out and it's back to hot and muggy.

Mechanic was able to fix my car yesterday due to someone else canceling. He installed a new water pump plus did some work on the suspension system. It wasn't cheap but it needed to be done and I trust them if they say I should. They got my last car to 400,000 miles. I drove it until it hit 350,000 then my husband's car died so I gave it to him when my mom quit driving and gave her car to me. His commute was 9 miles one way and mine was 90 so I needed the more reliable car. He got another 50,000 miles out of it, then his mom quit driving and gave her car to him. By that time, my old car was a POS with 400,000 miles on the engine and the body was rusting out. We got $50 for it at the junkyard LOL. My mom's car had 40,000 miles on it when I got it, and now has 293,000 miles. I'm retired and not commuting any more but still would like to get a few more years out of it.

Hi Badger. I am due for new front struts soon, so I get where you are coming from. Only 145k miles on Rexxie. Mechanics are busy these days with a shortage of new and used cars. Glad you got in.

I am having a well-deserved day of rest after busting it yesterday. Headed out to Lopez Island early tomorrow for a day of cycling and spectacular scenery.

My big news is that next year, I will be joining the leisured class. I told the nonprofit head on Tuesday that 2021 will be my last year with December 31 being my last day. Plenty of time for an orderly transition. Though I do have a colleague who is seriously freaking. I will continue to do some market research work, but the fabulousness:drudgery quotient has been skewed in the wrong direction for quite some time.

I am very happy to be moving forward. Think I will sneak in a run today as for once a Friday when I am not completely dead. Still waiting to know for sure about my Scotland cycling tour, but at the moment things do not look promising. I shall know soon enough.

    Happy Friday! - Claire

I sure wish we could get some rain. My water bill is going to be through the roof!

Yesterday we toured the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site, which was very interesting and sobering. During the Cold War, North Dakota (and some of the nearby less populated states) basically filled with these Missile Sites and on the front lines if a war with the Soviet Union would have broken out. In the 1990s a treated was signed with them in which most of our (and their) missiles were removed & the sites closed down. This one was kept as it was (except for the nuclear missiles!) and was very, very interesting.

Today we walked with the grand-dogs, had friends with two dogs over for lunch, and I went grocery shopping. edj, I will HAVE to be an Energizer Bunny to keep up with this dog! I have been reading up on German Shorthairs (which is what Bruno's dad is), and have found that they need two hours of serious exercise a day (not a little stroll around the block) and (to quote) "no amount of exercise is too much for a German Shorthair Pointer puppy". ShockedLuckily we put up the fence, have a neighbor dog who likes to play, a son with a fence and more playmates in town (and DH like to do things with him). I'd be dead if I had to keep him busy all by myself. Case in point.....when I was unloading the groceries, I was surprised that Bruno didn't come down in the basement to see what I was doing when I was putting things in the freezer etc. I found out why when I went back up to the kitchen. He had pulled a loaf of bread off the counter and had already eaten half the loaf!!!

Claire, congrats on retirement! I know you will stay active if not more so. Just look at Ruth. :-)

I retired in January and love it. Still can't shake the habit of rising early but that's OK. I walked, watered, and weeded this morning while it was still cool.

I love getting up early and then doing whatever I want in a more leisurely fashion!

DH, DS, GF, and I are going to attempt to take four dogs swimming. If you never hear from me again, it's because I am at the bottom of a lake!Loopy

I'm getting my Swiss social security starting September and hopefully my US one too. They are deducting some "windfall* amount from my Swiss social security which I'm hoping will be compensated for with my US one and with my husband's spousal benefits. I have no precise amounts yet on anything so keeping fingers crossed. I'm still busy as a mom, still doing a ton of laundry for DH, DD, her dog and her boyfriend, cooking everyday, walking the dog everyday and hoping this will all be worth it once she becomes a doctor. Or something that makes her happy. I bumped into the mom of one of DD's primary school friends and was told he was just released from a psychiatric clinic after treatment for depression. So sad. He was also an adopted child and I always thought seeing him growing up, how he was heckled in the playground, that it couldn't have been easy. I know DD suffered in the same way, being the butt of jokes daily for looking different. His issues probably went beyond that, but really, no one deserves to grow up that way.

On a positive note, DH, the dog and I went SUPping on the lake. It was so much fun and I think Sammy enjoyed it in the end. I got a few solo runs and fell off once, as I tried to dock, and was barely able to get back in. I will need to develop more muscles to help me there. My back complained a bit but maybe my core got stronger for the effort.

Heidi, as a teacher I could deal with most behaviors in an understanding way, but the one thing I had zero tolerance for was bullies. They can inflect lifelong damage to their victims. I'm so sad DD and her friend were subjected to it.

We didn't go swimming after all. Everyone had the same idea to get out on the water so there was no deserted places to go. DH & I were invited to a picnic and a pontoon ride. Not exercise, but very fun!

I did my weights routine today, I was kind to myself and did not do my 15/20 minute walk after dinner - too hot and humid, and felt that I did enough errands during the day anyway. I am golfing 9 holes tomorrow if it doesn't rain, I have recently increased my work hours so getting the exercise in requires more planning!

I took my little dog for only 40-45 min this morning, and 20 tonight, but my DH and I also did our first "hike" of the summer today -- more of a woods walk, a 2.4 mile loop around a local water supply. It took us about an hour, and it was...pretty nice, and I'm not normally a woods walk kind of person.

Group class yesterday at We Build 4 Life, still loving that and my husband's still going so that's a win/win all around.

Today I biked 8 miles, which is my longest ride yet. I think I mentioned here that I had a pretty terrible bike wreck when I was 12, so any biking is a big act of courage to me and I'm ridiculously proud that I'm doing this.

You should be proud, edj. One of the things that I am very proud of is helping convince a former client a few years ago that he could get back on the bike which he thanked me for. I think this could have been due to younger guy needing to outdo older woman, but who cares!

I had a glorious time yesterday feeling superior to those on e-Bikes and those who did 18 miles to my 30 plus over 5 miles of walking. A very long day as an almost 2 hour drive to the ferry. Out at 6:15a and back at 9:45p. A long wait for the ferry back as the internet timetable failed to mention that the 4:15 doesn't run on Saturday. So a long chat with her, a stretch out on the grass and a nap, and then chats with fellow cyclists. It was great fun!

So glad I have made the decision to move forward. I will still be doing a bit of work, but I don't want to be tied to day in and day out commitments. There is a lot more to this story, but let's just say it's is an opportune time to move on.

Some pictures. Note that I always return home with food (bread made from grain grown on the island and 2 jars of blackberry jam) as well as a bottle of wine made from Siegerebe grapes grown at the local vineyard and winery. Siegerebe is a varietal that grows in the Puget Sound region but not elsewhere in Washington State. I will be digging into the bread shortly! - Claire

I rowed yesterday (on the water) for an hour and a half, and today I did strength training. Now trying to rest up to do housework before the week starts.

Claire: I know you didn't mean it this way, and more power to you! But I am so thrilled to have an ebike now so I can get back in biking shape. Since no matter which way I leave my house I have hills in every direction with at least a 17% grade (pretty much right out the door) it makes the beginning of getting back in shape post-chemo (and broken leg and wrist, so had already lost a lot of strength while unable to move independently even before the cancer dx a few months later) do-able, instead of too daunting. Same with running. The treadmill helps! But I am trying to use the assist as little as possible, so I can build strength, and I hope to get back to a "real" bike soon!

I am discouraged, though I shouldn't be, that the getting back in shape is taking as long as it is. After the 6 mo rehabbing from my accident followed right away by 18 months of chemo (with surgery and radiation thrown in for good measure, of course0 i know I should be realistic. But I look at people around me doing things i feel I should be able to and I get grumpy. Which is stupid. Brains.

Sorry Dragon. These were 20-somethings! I also know that my e-bike days are coming, most likely this decade (I am 71). I also admit to walking a couple of the hills yesterday.

You will get there with getting back into shape. Though patience is a virtue that I admit to frequently not having.

About 18 months ago, I had a conversation that put it all into perspective. I was bemoaning the fact that I am slower than a snail when it comes to running. The gent I was chatting to put it this way as it was one of the days of the football playoffs:

"Just think, there are 25 million people glued to their television sets today. We are out here running. By virtue of the fact that we are out here at all, we are at the front of this race."

Anyway, I feel more than blessed. I can set out and have an adventure at a time in my life whereas for so many, this is simply not an option. I do work hard to preserve my bone strength and forestall sarcopenia. So far, I am winning this battle. And I want to keep winning for as long as possible.

Now to get on my bicycle for a non-strenuous ride on the flats. - Claire

Do not be discouraged, Yeslama. I once read that however long you were in 'active treatment', you should expect it take that long again to get back to 'normal'. Even though I really worked at it, I found it took double the amount of time. Keep plugging away, and you will get back to where you were, and more if that is what you choose!

I forgot to say that I ended up doing a Denise Austin DVD last night. We woke up to a lovely and much needed rain. I went to Yoga and plan on a dog walk before the day is over.

No worries, Claire, as long as you don't rub it in when I am trying to chase you up hills next time you are out here! SillyHeart I do know I am getting stronger, and when I don't try to compare myself to others (my great-grandmother used to always say, "comparisons are odious" -- especially when folks tried to compare me and my sister) I can appreciate how far I have come since this time last year!

Ruth: That is a big pup! So glad he is going to school soon!

Yeslama, YES to all that rowing! Claire, love the treat-filled panniers.

True, sarcopenia is our enemy. Where the muscles go, the bones follow. I know I am still not doing enough just looking at official guidelines (since the pandemic, that is). I just cancelled my once a week class, which I consider the bare minimum. Too hot is my excuse: Neither my gym nor my home is airconditioned.

Am going for a non-strenuous e-bike ride in the cool forest instead. Maybe I'll go visit the penguins in the zoo but not sure they cool down the visitor areas.

Oh, Yeslamdragon, that all sounds so relatable! After the last 14 months of constant onslaught: pandemic, chemo, surgery, radiation, surgery, new meds, and shoulder injury it is slow to get me moving again.

Your hour and a half rowing was awe inspiring to those watching, and I’m sure it’s ahead of where you had been. Strength training, housework, Ebiking, they all count! Each step forward is worth celebrating.

Being graceful with ourselves, at least for me, is hard! But your great grandmother was right! Comparisons are odious! If you have to compare - try to compare to yourself. Are you ahead of where you were a month ago? 3 months ago?

Do you have any specific goals? I’m aiming at biking 2021 miles this year. I’d like to exercise one way or another for 1-2 hours a day. And I’d be thrilled if I could lose another 20-30 pounds (lost 40 in the last year) while maintaining healthy management of all my comorbidities. I can measure these, and seeing progress is uplifting.

I love this group, and while I have tried to keep up with reading, I have missed contributing. Scaled way back on my exercise for a while, but just re-joined a gym a month ago and have been starting over with lifting weights. I walk the most for my cardiovascular exercise, and so thankful I can because I love it (and walking is necessary!).

Welcome back, GoKale, it's good to see you posting.

We've had lovely cool weather the past two days following an inch of rain on Sunday. The lawn is greening back up. DH may have to mow LOL. Got out and walked in the mornings. Finished the weeding yesterday. Now have clean beds all around the house and garage plus two large bags of garden gunk. The city comes by on Thursdays to pick it up. I have already gotten my money's worth out of that garden kneeler.
