This morning, I'm dragging my husband with me to a 9 AM group class at WeBuild4Life. While they're focused on people who've had cancer, they're not limited to it. My husband's really stepped up his running game and if he doesn't start incorporating strength work, he's going to end up with other issues. I know because it happened to me.

He's not exactly thrilled to go (says he hates being told what to do, then sheepishly confessed he will feel like an idiot because he doesn't know what to do--well shoot, I won't either so he won't be alone). But he's going!

So stoked, what a great class! And then Sami was doing a video for the sessions Jinx mentioned and asked if I wanted to be part of that with the other women. YOU BET! Here's a photo my husband took and the end--I'm in the back row in the middle (Sami gave me a tee shirt so I was dressed appropriately):

This morning I participated in an annual charity event called The Running of the Pink. I usually don't do 'pink' things but 100% of all proceeds raised stays local and assists with a program which focuses on assisting ALL men and women with breast and cervical cancer needs (particularly for low income people who could not otherwise afford screening; but, among other things, if your insurance doesn't cover 3D mammograms, they pay the different so that everyone can have a 3D. There was some cloud cover & a breeze so it wasn't as hot as I feared it would be. Here we are getting ready to rock the 5K (walk).

Hi Jules, and a belated welcome....I missed that there is now someone else from New Mexico on this thread (I am in Santa Fe).

I also love all the pictures! and it goes without saying that Bruno is too cute.

I am finally making a little bit of progress post wheelchair/broken leg. At least I can walk with just a cane. However, hubby and I went up to the mountains for a few days this past week because I just needed to get away, and I got lazy on the exercises. Result: PT lectured me a bit at my appointment yesterday (She's good, and it seems like she can always tell if I've been doing my 'homework'), and worked me particularly hard. She thinks I would benefit from walking in the pool, and happily, our community association pool opened for the season this week. So yay! I am going to start lap walking in the pool tomorrow am, with a goal to do it 4x a week. I'll swim a bit too; can't wait to resume my favorite form of exercise!

Today's exercise will consist of some delayed spring cleaning. Cleaned out my linen closet this am, master bedroom closet is next. It is amazing how much exercise such tasks can be, especially for someone who is just starting to walk again after 2.5 months in a wheelchair...

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Glad you have a strict PT, Octo!

Edj, it really is awesome. There are scads of people who participate. 10 & 5K runs for the serious runners. Firefighters bring up some trucks and walk in their full gear, families with kids on bikes or in strollers, people with their dogs, people in wheelchairs, Special Olympians, some groups make up their own tee shirts to honor or memorialize a friend or family member.....I always get some tears behind my sunglasses.

I like the idea of the "15 minutes" trick. And I agree with edj3, that motivation -- unfortunately -- comes and goes. The trick for me is finding time to myself when no one needs me and I'm not exhausted. I have been trying to figure out when in my day or week I can block of time for me that I can set as sacrosanct (unless it's an emergency). I'm still working on it...

Today my dog crossed a line. She got me up at 4:07. If I'm not getting up early to get to the airport, or the house isn't on fire, or my kid's appendix hasn't burst, or I'm not about to get paid good money for a job, then no one should be waking me up at 4:anything. So I'm about to try to hit the "reset" button on my walks with her, and limit how early I will get up, and how long I'll walk her. I'm thinking if I can walk her at 5 or 5:15 for 45 min. and then drop her back at the house, I could probably get a half hour or more of my own exercise in (depending on the day). If she's used to an hour, would it be too horrible of me to only walk her for 45 minutes?

In excellent news for my working-out prospects: some neighbors with a small in-ground pool have opened it up to a group of us willing to help with maintenance, and also, the YMCA I have a membership at is finally reopening! So I'll have options as I get more mobile and stronger. I just have to figure out what my body can do, make the time, and do it!

Have any of you tried Livestrong classes in your area?

The dog will adjust, saltmarsh. Do what works for you (nobody should be out walking that early, I don't even think that is safe!). Glad you will have some more fitness options. Livestrong classes weren't offered for me, but it wouldn't hurt to check them out!

I did Barre Sculpt & Yoga today, and lots of dog stuff. Here is my 'Happy Dog' contribution: On a hot day, happiness is to hang out in a shady backyard and chew on a stick!

Great pix, everyone! Happy people, happy dogs. :-)

saltmarsh, we do not have Livestrong classes here in Podunk.

Octo, glad to hear you are able to be more active. Pool lap walking sound wonderful. Spring cleaning is definitely exercise.

Yesterday was a visit MIL day. Was too hot to walk outside when we got back and I took the afternoon off and napped. Walked early this morning.

Did the laundry, bathed my dog and two cats and a couple other things before it got wicked hot. Now I am just hiding in my house.

It's hot here too in the Kansas City area. We just skipped spring entirely and are now in the dog days of August, weather wise.

I did an hour of restorative yoga today. I need to call and set up my next personal trainer session and my husband has agreed to go back to the Saturday morning class at We Build 4 Life (so happy about that).

I got in the water and swam today! It is a relief to me that my right side doesn't feel too much different from my left, and it is especially awesome that I was able to do the breaststroke well enough to do a few (very short) laps. So now I just have to talk with my PT and ask what she'd recommend in terms of limits.

Also, I realized that the weekly visual representation/incentive I was using to track my workouts/health goals wasn't working as well for me as ones I've made in the past that showed 1-3 months at a time, so I've made myself a nice, new calendar for June and stuck it on my wall, and I'm already finding it to be better reinforcement.

Also, has anyone else here watched Brittany Runs a Marathon? I was looking for something inspirational to watch, and although I'd had a reality-style show more in mind (like the Crossfit Games docs or something), I stumbled across it. Goodness gracious, but I could relate with her first few runs!

ruthbru, you made me laugh -- whether intentionally or not, I'm not sure -- when you said you didn't think it was safe to be out so early. Not gonna lie, I didn't feel safe going too early. There have been both bears and bobcats spotted locally, and I feel fairly confident they could catch me and/or my dog if they wanted to.This heat is no joke. Neither are bears. Stay safe out there, people!

We always have bears and bobcats, but the bobcats are shy and the bears are usually not much interested in us. But it is way, way way too hot here to do ANYTHING outside now. We are just not made for temps in the 90s up here, especially in JUNE!

I am supposed to do my strength training at 5:30 tomorrow morning, but unless it cools off in that room overnight I think I will need to cancel. Bah.

Good Grief, it sounds like most of us are in the same boat (or I should say oven) weather-wise. I walked Bruno early (which means 8am.....not 4:30am!) & we took the grand-dogs for a very short (19 minutes) walk in the trees in the early afternoon (after which we drove around & got two sodas at the Taco Johns drive-through....only because they give out dog treats). I went to Pound, took the quickest shower in the world, then zoomed off to meet some friends at a local Mexican restaurant (it is the wife's birthday). We are in a severe thunderstorm watch right now. The sky is gray and rumbling. I don't want hail or damaging winds, but we could sure use some rain!!!

Just when I was going to head out for pool lap walking, we got a big 'dust devil'...no damage though I was sure it might break a few windows...so I stayed home and did more cleaning of cabinets instead. It isn't that hot here at 7000 feet, but we are getting afternoon thunderstorms, and such, sometimes even in the morning. Heading out to the pool early tomorrow morning (by 8 am), and then I have PT again at 11...so I am sure I will get a workout!

I did manage to do all my PT exercises today....so hopefully I won't get scolded! :-)

I think relief is most likely on the way. It was mid 40s and rain this morning, warming to sunny and just over 60.

Just got in from 4 miles of walking following a day of virtual Zoom training. Need to get in one more item of work prior to making dinner. Got the red onions for a red onion and cheddar cheese tart.

Still wearing wool. Gorgeous out right now.

One thing I remember about living in Vermont is that you can always sneak in a swim in a river if the weather gets too hot. How I survived haying as a young girl. Both the dog and I would head for the brook every few laps around the hay field with the tractor and rake. Still the only way I function in hot weather. (Though I do admit to getting funny looks when I head for the swimming hole a few miles from here.)

We have bears and cougars here. I hike anyway. I think I saw a bear a couple of days ago. Not sure as I wanted to keep my distance. Part of what makes life interesting. - Claire

I'm a very early morning runner (4:30 or 5 AM) and that's by choice and inclination. Even in the city, I see some pretty cool wildlife: foxes, coyotes, HUGE owls (those are the ones I get nervous about as they will swoop and attack if they think you're too near their eggs), so many raccoons, lots of possums (love them because they eat ticks) and once saw a deer (probably a doe) just BOUNDING down my street. That one took me a moment to figure out what I saw in the dark.

I don't fear humans though. If they're up at that hour, they're probably going to work and if they're creeps, well I'll keep running.

I got up at 4:20 for years (pre pandemic and pre cancer to get in some exercise before my day started. Usually inside. I’d be more likely to head outside when it’s light out - in the summer it nearly 5 before it’s light enough I can see what’s coming at me.

The scariest thing is not the wild animals, or the humans, it’s the people who let their dogs out to pee, and since they don’t think any people are out at that hour they don’t tie them to their leash or run like they do any other hour! Those pups are like a rocket!

My pup never goes outside without me and he is always on a leash because we don’t have a fenced in yard.

Finished spring cleaning yesterday - two bedrooms. Just have one bathroom to go but it's rarely used so doesn't get too dirty. Got out early (6:30) to walk.

We started out in a severe thunderstorm warning last night & it's still going on. Thunder, lightning, rain, and hail too. At 2:45am I was dragging my potted plants into the garage during the midst of the hail part of the evening. (Had I been struck by lightning, my final words would have been, "I regret that I have but one life to give for my flowers." Loopy) DS brought his dogs over on his way to work. They are so freaked out that he was afraid that his house would be destroyed if they were home alone (the perks of having retired parents living in your same town). I am going to Dance2fit at 9:00 & Yoga tonight. If the storm ever moves on, I will be picking up branches in between. I am thrilled for the rain; but we are back to the 90s once it quits, so it will be hot & humid both.

Stacy, not a small victory at ALL.

Also, I can only imagine how gross those rooms were with the scraped popcorn stuff all over. EW!
