Black bears are very timid and just want to be left alone. They may bluster and huff and puff at you if you surprise one, but they rarely if ever attack. Since 1900, fewer than 75 people have been killed by black bears in the US, so given the countless human-black bear interactions that must have happened in that time, fatalities are quite rare.
I learned about black bears when we started seeing them up at our mountain cabin. All we have to do is bang a few pots and pans together a couple of times and they take off. Even black bear moms are reluctant to attack to defend their cubs - there is no record of anyone ever being killed by a mom black bear defending her cubs. I've personally seen mom take off when we bang our pots and pans, leaving her cubs to climb a tree, run away, or otherwise get out of danger as best they can.
Grizzlies and polar bears are much more aggressive than their timid black bear cousins - you don't want to mess with them.
http://www.bear.org/ - good website if you want to learn more about black bears. As the website says, "What should I do if I see a black bear? Basically, enjoy it. To make the bear run away, step out and wave and shout, "Hey, I'm a human!" " The black bear will take off.

Bounce said: Also I made almond butter. Why I don't know. It tastes terrible. What on earth do people do with it? I have no idea Bounce and thanks for the laugh.

I'm still scared of bears.Went to Power Step tonight.

On my way to the gym. Just thought I'd give you some bear education.
And a laugh...

ROFL, TwoHobbies. That is awesome!!!!
(Taking a day off today after yesterday's Wild Windy Ride.)

That is funny TwoHobbies. Dulcigirl, followed the wrong group - glad they only added more miles and didn't take you out of the state!
Ran an hour in the pool yesterday. Why is it I can run an hour, and then some, in the pool but can barely run a minute on dry land. Frustrating!!!!
Walked 2 miles during lunch today. Chores inside now so, night my sculpted friends.

Patoo, maybe because running on land hurts?
Back from the gym. 30 minutes weights and stretching and 45 minutes treadmill. Good news for the newbies - I'm shocked at how fast I'm improving now that I've really been able to dedicate myself to this exercise thing. I'm working up the nerve to try a little running on the treadmill soon.
Black jicama and guacamole. Latin band with a dark side, I suppose.

TwoHobbies - omg thanks so much for the lol! I've gotta send that to my BIL - he goes with my DH every so often on the annual Colorado elk hunting trip and is scared shitless of bears of any kind. He'll get a kick outa this. I'm a bear scaredy-cat too.
I got in a brisk 60 minute walk tonight. Didn't really feel like walking but I figured it would help with the bloating I still seem to have trouble with since revision surgery on April 25. Never had that problem with previous general anesthetic procedures. I get all chubby feeling and intestinally miserable just about every time I eat anything since surgery. Hope it clears up soon cuz it's pissing me off. You'd think I'd avoid eating and be losing weight but nooooooo.......still get hungry so I still eat.....sigh
AnnieLane - I am STILL so proud of you for sticking with the program! You're an inspiration and I'm anxious to get past my current workout restrictions (2nd week of June) and hopefully get back to a little running too.
I'm so impressed with what everyone is doing to stay active and just a little envious. I haven't worked out much for a couple of months because of plantar fasciitis in both feet. Now I'm on a further six weeks restrictions for upper body due to revision surgery and am going through one of those periods where I'm feeling really down about my weight and lack of activity. This too shall pass but........blech.

Sweet, maybe you need a probiotic. They usually give you antibiotics during surgery and maybe they killed your good flora? As for the weight and exercise, you are healing. Take time to heal.

hmmm....I hike amongst black and grizzlies....although I've had a few "meetups" that have turned out ok, can't say I'm casual about seeing one, even if it's a blackie. Especially in the spring when they have babies! We're more of the "back away and give them space in our neck of the woods. Maybe our bears have more "attitude"??? Bearbells....we're taught out here it just makes the bears curious, and they seek out what the strange noise is. Otherwise, the only affect they have is to piss off fellow hikers.
Got the okey dokey from PS today to get back at it, so out I go....a good walk with some running tossed in to celebrate. First I gotta find my toque and mitts though, cause it's cold out there. Gotta work of the ribs we had for supper!
sweet....hang in there! Healing is your priority right now and the fact that you have been able to get back to walking means you looked after yourself when the plantar fasciitis kicked in. Don't stop caring yourself now.

Beautiful 4 mile evening walk with the hubby tonight. No bear sightings in kansas city tonight, thank goodness! ;-) Tried some sit ups and floor exercises as well. Slightly frustrated with my lack of upper body strength. It's going to take time.....

Funny bear poster!
Subbed today, ran around doing errands after school & then went to Zumba. I am TIRED tonight!

Twohobbies, that was hilarious!!! Thanks for sharing.
Patoo, running in the pool is much easier on your joints hence why you can do it longer.
Mary, your cabin in the woods sounds like heaven.
Ran 2.5 miles after work plus some weights.

Patoo in my world running in water is still running. Iwanna it will take time but it does come back. Twohobbies too funny, not too many bear encounters around here. Sweet don't be hard on yourself and you may want to take a probiotic to help with the bloat. Ruth I'm with you in the tired, went to Sh'bam this morning and came home from work and laid on the couch for you know 'just 10 minutes' before going to the gym, woke up 2 hours later - my darned cat has a new game at 2am and at 4.30am he jumped from the windowsill bounced on to the bed then bounced on to my stomach and knocked the wind out of me

NatsFan, I've never had a bear encounter, but I hope to see one someday. Hopefully a mellow black bear like you describe. TwoHobbies, you got me, I thought that was a real sign until the last line. Newbies, runners, and bikers, wow you are inspiring me! Lilac, thanks for the words and the diet article. I followed the China Study kerfluffle and the wacky diet world before treatment. That was the first thing to go during chemo. I do try to eat good food but no longer tolerate folks who believe a perfect diet prevents all illness. Sweet, I feel for you-- it's frustrating to be unable to exercise when exercise is such a good thing for your health.
A little one-armed hooping today and some bodyweight squats. Two doctor appointments tomorrow. Hoping to get at least one of these issues sorted out soon.

Ann, I agree with you regarding perfection to prevent all, yet it does make a difference. S&S, it is hard to have to stop and start due to active treatment or any treatment. Twohobbies. liked the bear sign! I do resistance for upper body, using pilates and yoga poses and can plank with ease for long periods of time. I don't lift weights or do pump classes. I'm really paranoid about developing lymphedema and not willing to risk it.
Off to the gym for body balance and yoga

Love that sign two hobbies!
As the day went on yesterday my back began to feel better, but this morning I can barely reach my feet again. So no gym after work today. Did get my 10,000 steps in yesterday, today might be a challenge since I need to run errands at lunch. Did take a naprosyn this morning, so hopefully as it kicks in I'll be able to move more pain free. Tried a little classical stretch this morning, but it just wasn't happening.

Off to Core, Pilates and subbing at noon.
Cheryl, this one is for you:

sweet.....man oh man, I totally get your stop and start frustration. Have faith the stop sign gets less and less frequent. Try to mentally categorize it as rest and recovery time...that's what elite athletes do to stay healthy.
pat....have you been using ice on your back. It helps a lot with pain, and likely you have some inflammation going on.

Hi Ladies. After continuing with chemo SEs (mild nausea) into day 5 after treatment I called my MO and he prescribed some steroid medicine to accompany my Zofran. I feel better today though so I will wait til next round to start that. Walked 2 mi yesterday then did an intense 45 min Chickboxing class at the gym (cardio kickboxing). My gym is women only so they creatively renamed the class Chickboxing, lol.
I love Almond Butter and use it in smoothies, spread on celery, instead of peanut butter in a sandwich and for baking!
As far as diet being a preventive or a helpful fighter against disease. Here is the link to an article I really liked reading today and agree with if anyone is interested. http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20471167,00.html

Daily exercise since i last checked in about a month ago? Yes.
In a moment of lunacy, when my frontal lobes were overtaken by some alien force, i signed up for a 10-day bicycle ride around Lake Ontario in July (What! Was! I! Thinking!) which will include some 80-mile days and average about 54. Since i've never done more than 60 miles in one day and that was over 4 years ago, i have my work cut out for me to get ready, and because i'm not going to put off writing the term paper until the weekend before it's due, suffice it to say that there will be 'daily exercise' from now until the end of July; see you then!

Thank all for the support and suggestions. Never having had gas problems before I would never have thought of a probiotic. The only one I'm familiar with is Activia (that IS a probiotic, right?) - any other good suggestions? Ruth, you find the coolest images, how ever do you find time to sub and work out if you're surfing for images all day long?

Hahahaha Ruth and here is Frank in all his glory!!!!

Sweet,
There are lots of probiotics. This one is my favorite:

Short walk today. I think I'm overdoing it a little and need some recovery days. I'lm really relating to those two cat pictures!
Nihahi I'm with you on respecting all animals with teeth bigger than mine!
Sweet. Culturelle is a drugstore brand that is good and only a little expensive. They all seem to be so expensive. Florastor is also good. Or you can try yogurt but something like Danactive has more cultures.
Lilacblue I searched and searched for studies on diet and concluded all they tell us so far is maintain a healthy weight and keep your blood sugar low. There might be some indication eating many different vegetables and herbs may help more than quantity. I have selected to go mostly paleo and because I try to avoid grains I have to fill up my plate with vegetables and my glucose is lowest in three years although it was never out of range. I do know my prior diet did not prevent cancer so my theory is I might as well experiment but that's me.

Forgot to mention 20 minute walk this morning as a break at work. Walked with a slower walking co-worker so it wasn't as brisk as I would have liked, but hey, 20 minutes is 20 minutes, right?

Hey Cheryl, I think Frank needs a few extra treats as he looks as underfed as my dogs...LOL
Completed a 45 minute boot camp class tonight with weights plus 20 minutes on the Elliptical.
Black Special K heading to bed.......

No particular exercise today. Getting bedroom and house picked up for DS visit tomorrow. He'll be here a week so may not get online (or much exercise) for awhile.
Running on land doesn't hurt me I just don't seem to be able to do it. In water it is easy but I still wish I could do it on land. It's just weird.
Night my sculpted friends.

Bluetail.....wish I had time for all the amazing bicycle adventures. Riding around Lake Ontario sounds fab beyond belief. Especially if you take in a few wineries or microbreweries along the way. Jealous.
I do the Seattle-to-Portland for the same reason. I will DIE if not trained. You will be wonderfully fit and have great tales to tell at the end. One day, I will have time for a week's ride. Thinking Bordeaux or Germany where the wine drinking is also good.
I got in a 5k run after a crazy day. Still weights to do. Roasting veggies now.
Hint to Bluetail......invest in TWO PAIRS of serious bicycle shorts. - Claire

A good session of yoga this morning, and a brisk 5k walk tonight. Busy times here, but will do another run tomorrow.
One of the best holidays we've ever had, was riding our bikes up the Oregon coast, and camping every night in beautiful state parks. A loooooong time ago, but we often reminise about how great it was.
