    charmaine:

Yes, chemo can definitely effect some of our teeth.  Unfortnately, I got hit with it almost a year out of chemo and all the roots to all my upper back teeth on both sides were pitted with holes from the chemo.  I had to have 7 of them pulled and a bridge with all new back teeth put in.  It cost me a fortune (it is not covered by med ins. even though it's caused by chemo) and was quite an ordeal.  The teeth became brittle and were literally just breaking apart in my mouth.  Chemo appears to be the gift that just keeps on giving.  Hope it did to my cancer cells what it did to my teeth!  Good luck.

Charmaine...I didnt have very strong teeth even before the chemo.

But like LRM216 said mine was chipping and breaking also. I got almost all teeth removed from upper jaw and now I have a partial denture.

    LRM216/Linda:

For the past week my gums and teeth on the lower right have been really bothering me big time.  Just today I put my finger towards the inside of the lower gumline of my 5 lower teeth and and a little bit lower than the where the teeth actually are in the gumline , in area of 5 teeth gumline - I feel literally 5 bumps sticking out from the gumline and it is kind sore/sensitive.... I do not feel it was like that a few weeks or a month ago or I just did not notice as it was not as sensitive maybe.

Going to go and make an appt with Dentist tomorrow for sometime this forthcoming week.

granny...I had my sentinel node removed. had lumpectomy I never had a drain.

But the more Im reading i see that its been done.

If your DR things you needed than get it.

    just concentrate on getting better.

    Those things are all temporary.

good Luck and let us know after you talk to your DR.

im gettiing so confused. on another thread i was told its real important to have the drains.i did have SNB with 1 node removed without a drain.no problem.now because dr#1 did not take the rest of the cancerous nodes out i have to have more nodes removed.dr#3 does not know how many nodes will have to be taken out this time.does the amount matter?

grannydukes:  I had nodes removed and my doctor did not put in a drainage tube, and that was not per my request either.   I wish that he had, as I a week later, ended up leaking and with infection.

I had 1 drain after single mx, but 2 days later had to go back in (developed a bleed) and when I came out of surgery, had 2 drains in.

When I had exchange surgery and lift/reduction, I had a drain in each side.  I'm not sure what the protocol is either.  Maybe it depends on Dr. and hospital policy.  Good Luck!

Each time I have had recon, I signed papers to acknowledge that I might need a drain (or two).  Didn't have one either time.  The doctor just made the call.

Okay call me stupid but what the drains are for and why some lumpectomy patients do get them while others dont.

    i was perfectly fine.

Since lymph nodes help carry lymph fluid away from the breast fluid, when they are compromised, the fluid canot leave the breast area.  After my initial surgery, My breast actually sounded like it was a water balloon.  When I leaned over, you could hear the water sloshing.  Probably should have had a drain.

I had a drain with my lumpectomy. I'm glad I did as I did have fluid - had to empty the bag into a little measuring cup to keep track of the amount to tell the Dr. Such fun.

When I had a large cyst removed back in '95, I didn't have a drain & should have since I had a large incision, two in fact. Anyway, fluid gathered & started to leak out, went to the surgeon, laid on the exam room table while he had me hold a bowl & gauze on the side of my breast while he massaged the fluid out. Very painful. I hated that Dr., made sure he was not my surgeon for my bc lumpectomy. Yell

Glad to be back with you all! I hope you had a great holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute with my Grandbabies!

Granny - I had bmx with immediate recon and SNB on left side with 4 nodes taken.  I was told I would have at least 2 drains either side and possibly more if he thought it was needed.  I woke up with 2 drains either side and all of them were out before I went home from hospital on day 5.  Despite the drains I did have a fluid pocket develop on the side that didn't have the SNB which was sucked out with an US guided needle so they didn't 'pop' the implant!

Val - ugh - that fluid removal sounds awful - surely there had to be a better way!

granny no drains for me either, I had 4 nodes removed during my SNB.  I never had any problems although the surgeon did tell me that if he had to remove more than the sentinel nodes I would have a drain and have to stay over night in the hospital.  So I would guess it does some what depend on the surgeon and how many lymph nodes they have to take out.  The way it was explained to me, by my surgeon is, the more nodes that are removed the more comprimised the lymphatic system becomes and it can cause the lymph fluids to not drain correctly. I guess it's just up to the individual surgeon and how comfortable they feel with the procedure.

I saw my Medical Oncologist today and all is well.  I received a great report all my labs are normal, even my platelet count is back to normal so yeah!!! I don't have to go visit him again for another 6 months.  However, he did increase my dosage of Tamoxifen to 20mg daily.  I'm not sure why??? As I was doing o.k. on the 10mg daily and he had told me the reason I was on the low dose was because I don't have any estrogen since I had a total hysterectomy... hmmm? I wonder if he forgot?  He had forgotten today why he didn't give me chemo.  LOL!  gives you great confidence in your doctors right!!  Oh well, next appt. is in November with Rads Onc and Breast Surgeon and Plastic surgeon.  Also will get my yearly mammo in November.  Woo Hoo!!  a little nervous about that one but not going to put the cart before the horse.

As for my computer it needs a new mother board to the tune of 450.00 so I will be purchasing a new one eventually.  This one I'm using is my daughters acer notebook she bought for school.

    Hugs

    Hi Gals-

I just joined this today. I had a lumpectomy and internal mammosite 1 week 2x radiation in May.  Beginning to feel better especially since I got a clean mammogram last week.  I am still dealing with the arm swelling and pain from lymph node removal.  I go to see my surgeon tomorrow to see what can be done for the swelling and slightly frozen arm.  I probably should have had some PT but I am going to see what I can do now. I modified my home signature will it show now?
