I was just told January31th, 2011 that I had breast cancer.  Shocked and Worried!!!  I am Stage 1a, ER-PR 100-67 positive and Her2-negative. 1.6 cm lump removed on Valentine's Day. My doctor wants me to do the Oncotype Dx to help with treatment. I have a daughter getting married in 65 days, in May, he is going to let me so raditation now for (33 treaments) and then if I need chemo, will do it then. Any advice.. I was on a hormone patch for 7 or 8 years, I am 52.

Welcome newbies:  Sorry you are here, but you will receive a lot of comfort and support as well as good information.

The best advice I could give other than to be your own advocate and do a lot of research about your treatment options is to make some diet and lifestyle changes that will benefit you in preveting a recurrence of bc.  This became my first line of defense right after my dx.  I cut sugars and starches out of my diet and now stick to fruits, veggies and lean protein.  A side benefit of that is I lost weight and look and feel great.  I also take a lot of supplements.  I didn't do chemo or rads, but I am taking tamoxifen with very few SE's.

Good luck to all of you...sending positive energy!

Spitfire welcome to the crowd.  Sorry you are having to deal with this and your daughter getting married as well.  If you do radiation now you might be pretty miserable at your daughters wedding.  Depends on when you would start.  You will most likely be very tired as well.  Some people breeze through radiation with no problem and no tired but there are no gurantees.  If you have any thoughts on having a MX put off the radiation until you consult with a plastic surgeon.    Is the BS giving you these options or your MO.  If it is your BS I would sit down with a MO before making any treatment decisions.  Feel free to PM any time.

Ducky, Congrats - wow a year has gone by....may you have many "uneventful" years ahead.
Layla, had to LOL about the mammo reminder....sooooooo typical.
And why does it seem that now that I've had BC, I am on everyone's call list to donate to random BC organizations?
Spitfire, I felt OK during rads - yes, I was tired, but I had good days.  The biggest problem is that I had irritated skin and I had swelling.  These could be issues for you for the wedding in terms of comfort and clothing.  I sincerely hope you find a path that allows you to enjoy the wedding while beginning treatment.
Jo, congrats on stopping smoking.  I am smoke free...can't remember the exact date,  but it has  been about 7 years and I cannon imagine ever smoking again.
I was completely bedridden with an overwhelming flu-type achey feverish bug.  I felt worse than I did in all the months of dealing with BC.  It made me think of those ladies who are truly feeling ill...my heart goes out to them.  Hope to go to work tomorrow.  It took awhile to catch up on reading here!

Wishing a good night to all...

    Joan

Joan - I am so hoping to reach 7 years like you.  I can't imagine going back now but I still have those days especially being around smokers all the time.

ducky - Congrats on one year - hoping for continued uneventful days ahead.  Let's get out the vodka and the red solo cups and celebrate!!

Ducky - congrats on the one year!

Joan - that flu thing is totally going around.  Lots of people out of my kids school and from work.

Spitfire - my rad treatment was much like Joan's.  I am 1 week out of treatment and I have very irritated skin and one open wound.

Got my 14's and 15's mixed up........I had my yearly mammogram on the 14th of Feb. 2011, and the recall was the 15th, when I got the news none of us wanted to get.........................the surgery was a month later, on the 14th of March..............................I was so sure i was right and my daughter was wrong, I had to go pull out my 2011 calendar to make sure.................when I called she said "Mom, how could I get the day of your surgery wrong.........that was the worst day of my life, other then theday we found out you had cancer"............................She was shocked I got it wrong......................I said "oh well, lots of water has flowed under that bridge since"..........and "the old gray mare ain't what she used to be"...............hahahahahha.

Joan:  I just got over that...thought the flu symptoms was my tamoxifen so I went off it, but it was just the virus!  Now I'm back on tamox and doing fine.  It will take a while to clear from your system, but it was a bad one.  I usually don't get that sick.

Congrats Ducky!!!  Welcome Spitfire and Newbies!  I used to have a really good memory, but the Anastrozole has taken care of that!  Drives me crazy when I can't get the word out that I want to say.

Spitfire, I second asking questions!  You mentioned the Onca type DX test.  I was smack dab in the middle, just had a matectomy and my insurance was changed from Blue Cross to Coventry.  Neither would cover the $4200.00 bill, Blue Cross since I was changing to a new insurance and Coventry because I didn't get prior authorization!  Thank God Genomics Lab. called and said if insurance DIDN 'T cover it, the bill would be picked up by them.  Without that test I would have undergone Chemo.  My Onca DX result  was 13, so I am now on Tamox. for 5 years.

Ihasamom............great news..............mine was 8, and had not problem with getting it paid for............I am shocked at the cost of the test.......had no idea.......For all the medicare years I put into Aetna, this bout with cancer, has set them back a huge amount.................as much as we hate  dealing with them, thank God for the insurance we do have..........Imagine being without it...........it must be frightening.

Jo I am so glad you are finally getting your recon done.  The drs are unknowing I think when they do a Lumpectomy/partial mastectomy then followed up by radiation as to what the breast will look like when all is completed which is why we are not immediately offered recon.  It's been a little over a yr since I had mine and I am so happy with it.  They did both of mine to make them even.  Hope yours works out evenly.  Wink

Hi mimi.....I'm right next door in Mississippi.....how are ya???

Today the first hummingbird of the year came to my feeder!  I just love those hummers!

My left breast is a little smaller than my right.  Hubby says he can't tell when I'm dressed but I can.  But it doesn't bother me a bit!

I love that I have no hair under my left arm....having said that I have to "bush hog" under my right arm, rofl!

It could be worse and I've been so blessed so all in all....no complaints!

    Have a great day!!!!

filterlady LMBO about the bush hogging your armpit!!!! made my day Laughing  after I had radiation my RO slammed me so hard I hardly have any hair growth under either arm.  If I let them go for 6 months I might grow 6 hairs.  haha!!! but now the legs are a different story they unfortunately still get the 2-3 times a week shave in the winter and I'm sure in the summer it will be daily when wearing shorts and capris.  Wink

As for the breast difference you are lucky I was not so much.  I was like a DD on the good side and a shriveled up hard B on the radiation side which is why I had recon.

Yikes....my right is about a C and my left is about a B-, rofl!  My left nipple points to the left but that's okay too.

The absolute worst thing for me was not being able to wear a bra for about 5 weeks.  So hubby bought me some "wife beater" undershirts and I wore that under my shirts when I went somewhere.  But it still almost pushed me over the edge!

It was so hot today that I had to break down and shave the legs so I could wear capris.  Now it's time to get a pedicure so I can get my toes out, lol.  Hubby usually does my pedicures....he gets a kick out of the toes spreaders, rofl......I know....he's not right....but he's mine!

    Take care!

Filterlady - What you described sounds a lot like how I look.  I am 2 cm smaller on the left side with the nipple out of alignment.  Plus, there is nothing left on the bottom side except the lumpectomy scar.  Gotta get the girl fixed.

Mimi - I am lucky if I get 6 hairs in the arm pit and then I really have to look for them.  Have to be very careful when I do shave those bad boys off.  Still can't feel a damn thing on that side.

Hoping to had a date for April sometime next week.  Will let everyone know.

Ok, this may be a weird question, but did the radiation make your nipples change directions?
