seabeal you might want to check into DIEP flap.  Diep is where they only take your stomach fat and not your muscle.  Tram takes your stomach muscle as well.  Only you can deside which is the best choice for you.  If they do not have a PS in NM that does DIEP there is a group in San Antonio that does tons of them and people come from all over.  They are PRMA you can google them.

Seabeal, I had a BLMX with expanders put in at the time of the surgery and I will have the switch done to get my soft implants next week.  I don't really know anything about the TRAM.  The expanders are uncomfortable and it's been a long six months with them.  I'm hoping the implants will be much better and more comfortable.  I had my surgery done at the Lovelace Women's Hospital in ABQ and Dr. Gallegos of Hermosa Plastic Surgery did my reconstruction.  He is also in ABQ.  I really like him.  He's kind of dry, but he came highly recommended by my primary surgeon.  I was just a little uncertain about taking abdominal muscles out.  But I would definitely discuss it with your surgeon and ask him about it.

Sheila888 - so sorry for your loss.  Prayers to you and your family.

seabeal - I am by no means an expert on flap surgeries, but please know that there are different types.  Some, like DIEP, are perfomed only by plastic surgeons who do microsurgery.  Plastic surgeons who do TRAM flaps, but aren't trained to do DIEP, might not inform you of all your options.  Here's a link to a thread about TRAM vs DIEP:

    http://community.breastcancer.org/topic/44/conversation/692264

I wasn't interested in the large abdominal scar of a flap surgery so I chose implants and I'm very pleased with my decision.

BTW, the same thing seems to apply to breast surgeons who do not perform nipple-sparing mastectomy.....patients are sometimes not informed that it's even an option.  Many women don't find out about it until after the fact Frown.

Deb720 - Could you tell me who your surgeon was in Albu. Dr Lopez my onco in Santa Fe referred me to Susan Seedman but I do not know who the plastic is or will be. Dr Lopez also gave me a name of a plastic, Jeff Morehouse, who he recommended.

Sheila888 - I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Your post appeared after I made my post and I felt like an insensitive ***. I just want you to know I'm thinking of you.

    Seabeal

I opted for expanders and implants- and feel great about my choice. Just was not interested in more major surgeries involving moving stuff from one part of body to another- that's just me though - you might send a private message to lilac and ask for access to pic board so you can actually see various types of reconstruction thought the process- really has been a huge help to me

    Seabeal,

My surgeon was Dr. Calvin Ridgeway.  He is in the Lovelace Women's Hospital on Montgomery.  I loved him!  He is a very good surgeon and very caring.  He was my sister's surgeon as well and did her lumpectomy.  My sister really liked him too.  The office number there is  505-727-6900.  I think Morehouse was the name of the other surgeon he referred us to.  If I remember correctly he said Morehouse was a good surgeon and very nice.  He said Dr. Gallegos was a little better at the surgery, but his bedside manner was not as good.  I chose Dr. Gallegos and he is a little dry, but it has never put me off.  I like him.  You might interview both of them and see how you like them.

I knew who I wanted for a surgeon as soon as I got the dx.  Dr. Mac is highly respected well beyond our little backwater town and he had removed my gall bladder in 2002.  On my first consultation with him for the BC he suggested I might want a second opinion but I said never mind and do not regret my decision.

I kind of wondered at the time why he examined both breasts when the mamo and ultra sound had only found one lump in the right one.  At my test last month the Dr at imaging told me that Dr Mac's fingers are so sensitive and he is so expert that he can gauge the size of even the smallest lump better than they can with all their equipment and that he finds masses they miss.
