I have not been on forever and a day, and lots going on with you all.

Granny So sorry about your friend, keeping you both in my prayers.

I posted this update on another board. Kinda nervous about it but looks like Sherry has the same thing going on.

I had my 3 month MO appoint last Friday and the results of my bone density test were in and they were not good.  I have been on Femara for over a year now and the only SE i have had were minimal hot flashes, which have decreased to almost none, an increase in coloestoral (now taking meds for that, back to normal) now I have a decrease of 13.3% bone density in my lumbar.  I am nervous about taking other meds because I have had minimal SE.  The alternative my MO is giving me is having a Zometa infusuion which should stop the decrease of bone density and strengthen the bones.  Read up on it and I am OK with it.  It does not come in pill form so it has to be infused through an IV.  I am having it done on Thursday.  Wish me luck.

Wishing all my sisters well as you are always close in my thoughts.

    Hey Walker,

Good to see you back. My hips have been killing me and so when I see my GP next month I'm going to ask for an x-ray or something. I have been on anastrazole (arimidex) a year now. I hope the bone damage doesn't happen that quickly! I keep trying to increase my exercise level, but my hips won't let me. It is really frustrating to be 45 and have achy hips!

I am having  bone density scan tomorrow morning (at 7:30 a.m. - yikes!  And it is an hour drive!) to determine if I need a Prolia injection next month.  My last scan was 18 months ago and I already had osteopenia, so we need to see if it has gotten worse after 6 months of Femara, and 6 TCH.  I didn't want to wait another 6 months - they recommend the scan every 24 months.  Plus I would like a true baseline before making a decision about the injection.

SpeicalK hope all goes well.  Dec 2010 was when I had my first bone density test done and I was at osteopenia then, 12 months later Dec 2011 it elevated to osteoporosis.  Dec 2009 I had my back xrayed and it showed my L5 was starting to deteriorate.  So I have had lower back pains for a while even before 2009.  I have been on Femara for 16 months and have opted to stay on it and have the infusion.  My MO has suggested this as the best course for staying on Femara.  I am glad your getting it done, 24 mos is a long time to wait.

walker - I agree - in light of the treatment I have received, 24 months is too long.  I used to get the scans every 24 months because I was stable - not getting any worse.  I need to know if the Femara is causing damage.  I also have 2 degenerated disks at L4-5, but strangely my lumbar back pain is not as bad as it has been in the past.  My MO is planning the Femara and Prolia combo in hopes of keeping me on Femara, as I am ER+ 96%.  He has indicated the Prolia is treating and preventing simultaneously.  The last bone density was the same day as the fateful mammo/US!

Granny, funny, I hate sneakers, too!

SpecK and walker, I recently had a nuclear bone scan because I have rib pain and the onc wanted to be sure I didn't have mets. All clear. I did have a Dexa for a baseline two years ago this coming September. I have slight osteopenia in my hip. I am not taking Arimidex and am rying hard to do weight-bearing exercise. My GYN wants me on Evista but I am balking as I hate taking drugs, period. Hoping my next one is OK.

Just FYI - I was talking to a nurse once who did the community screenings for health and she told me that walking on uneven ground, like hiking, was a better bone builder than walking on flat pavement.  She said it was thought to be something about the foot being in slightly different positions as it  became weight bearing.  Made sense to me but I don't know where she got her info.

Works for me, since walking on the beach is uneven!

barbara - hope the next one is good for you too!  Today was easy except for the drive and early appt. (hour drive and 7:30 a.m.)  It was kind of funny - I changed into the gown but had worn track pants and sneakers, so now I am in a gown and sneakers, a fashion DON"T!  So I am done with the scan, waiting in a chair for the guy to come back to tell me the views are all good and I can get dressed again.  An older couple comes back, the wife goes to have her scan, I am chatting with the husband.  She comes back and they tell her to get dressed and they go.  Their tech looks at me and is wondering why I am still there.  She checks with my tech - HE FORGOT ME!  He comes running back and apologizing - pretty comical, but I looked like an idiot in the gown and sneaks even longer than I had to!  What a way to start the day.  I want to come walk on your beach with you!

sherryc:  Did your MO not recommend chemo or was it your decision not to have it?  My Onco score is 27 and MO is recommending CMF type chemo.  My Mom had bc at 80 (is now 96) and lost sister to ovarian cancer.  I am BRAC negative and so are my sisters (even one that had ovarian cancer).  Because of this, I decided to go with the chemo.  IDC, Stage 1, Grade 1, 1.1 cm; ER+,HER2 -, node negative.  Start on Tuesday ,, very nervous.

smva-I got two opinions and both said the SE's would be worse than the benefit chemo would give me.  What is your Ki67?  Mine was below 10%.  The second opinion I had said if my tumor had been 2 cm or my KI67 over 10% he would have recommended it. He did say that if I could not sleep at night and wanted the chemo he had no problem giving it to me.  I thought about it and decided against it. I was 48 at diagnosis.  How old are you?  Because I did not do chemo my MO put me on oral biophosonates (Fosomax) because there was a study that was showing lots of promise for it helping reduce recurrence rates in early stage, pre menopausal, no chemo patients.  In December at the San Antonio Breast Symposium they reported on the finished study and had very good results specific with Zometa.  So my insurance approved it and I am having my first infusion Feb 10th.  I will get two a year for three years.  Good Luck on Tuesday.

Barbara that sounds lovely, wish I could be there too.

Wish me luck on my Zometa infusion today at 3:00.  Have drank a lot of water the past three days to prepare for it.
