I know what you mean.  I've been pretty fortunate on the SE side with Tamoxifen and I know some have horrible SE's. Other than some warm flashes (which at my age I was getting anyway) and stiff feet in the morning when I get up, I really feel fine.  I do have back issues but did before Tamoxifen.  Yoga and a good chiropractor help with that though. Considering dropping by the local gym this weekend to check out a strength building program.  Been doing some reading on the subject and its seems a good fit for my age group (50+).  I abhor hour long sessions of cardio LOL!  Not co-ordinated enough for running.

I've been using Myfitnesspal.  Once you build up your database of foods that you eat on a regular basis its a fast process to tick those off and add to your meals for the day.  There's a huge database too even by brand names and restaurants.  I haven't checked out the other though.

Guy girl it haven't used Fitbit but a lot of people like it. Myfitnesspal and lose it are quite similar. I liked the look of Lose It better (visually) but myfitnesspal was better if you like to see the breakdown of your carbs etc. Calorie counting didn't work for me. I lost 2lbs in 7 weeks so I don't use them now. I went low tech and write in a notebook now.

Ellen, I used loseit.com for a while and liked it, especially earning back calories through exercise, but quit after a while because I don't have a smart phone and found it cumbersome to log in every ingredient in whatever I ate.  Now I'm low-tech like TwoHobbies and just use a small notebook.

Here are some interesting facts I just read about WATER! Especially note numbers 2, 3 & 4 (while I go drink a glass of water Smile).

     WATER

    1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

    2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

    3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 30%.

    4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

    5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

    6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

    7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

Wow, Ruth, that's great info! Maybe I need more water and less coffee to function better at work.

Ruth, thanks for that dynamite info on water. Wow! Will begin to drink more. I struggle to drink enough water because I simpy forget to do so. Had a big notice on my fridge for a while to remind me - will put it back on.

    Water is great- thanks Ruth!

Since i got in the habit during radiation, I have been carrying around my BPA-free aluminum water bottle full of ice water and some drops of Mio fit, or Mio energy- I really like the taste.

I keep the bottle open most of the time with a fun tropical party straw in it, makes me feel like I am having a drink at the beach (while actually I am just sitting at my desk at work or walking around campus). And there is no impediment to taking a sip.

Anyway I do feel a LOT better these days, either its the water or just slowly getting stonger overall after the year-long treatment ordeal.

Good luck to all with the weight loss AND rehydration!!

Glad you are feeling much better, sciencegal.

Thanks for the water tips, Ruth. I will try not to get even mildly dehydrated this week as I really need to lose some weight before going on holiday next week.

    Ruthbru--

I really like the water info. Can you tell us where yu found it?

  • ruthbru
    ruthbru Member Posts: 47,665

Actually, I can not! Surprised A friend of mine posted the water points on her Facebook page as part of a 'Why water is better than Coke' commentary (like mechanics use Coke to clean dirty batteries etc. etc.). It didn't have any sources listed (I just went back and looked). I posted the water information over because I thought it would be interesting to us.

If I eat my assigned meal and still feel hungry I drink a couple of cups of water and I usually feel full then. Somehow it works better for me to drink water after rather than before the meal.

I had two apple cider donuts yesterday. Sigh. Every fall I have issues with these and pumpkin pie. Have to be really good the next two days before weigh in!

Snopes.com on drinking 8 glasses of water:

    http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

This Snopes articles quotes an email similar to the text your friend had on her facebook page.  The Snopes article mainly addresses the claim that we need 68 glasses of water, but also talkes refutes the idea that caffienated beverages don't hydrate us.

I was hping that the piece posted above was real facts, because I feel like I would benefit personally from more water and found this piece encouraging. I guess it is still encouraging, even if not entirely true....

Virginia, thanks for the snopes link. I had read that the water quota could be met with food and that women need less than men. Fruits and veggies have a high water content so I surely have enough with 8 portions a day plus drinking water, tea and coffee. I do think it's important to hydrate to get your blood circulating nicely. The nurses always had such a difficult time drawing blood from me and I once had to go back the next day with instructions to drink a liter of water before coming. They had no problems after that. These days I bike to the center and that gets my blood pumping enough to make the draws really easy. I think this tells you something about the importance of water and exercise. :-)

Bleh. Up half a pound. But I know why.

Every week I lose and every weekend some "special event" derails me.

This weekend is my 25th college reunion...and I weigh 15 pounds more than I did in college. :-( (Although 4 of them are these implants! Lol.)

So I'll be the one wearing all black and tryng not to eat my way to another pound in the wrong direction.

Down one pound to 157. It's coming along, and I've been drinking more water. Don't want my metabolism to slow down. Thanks Ruth!

Still 137, last week was birthday week so I am just glad I did not gain.  Going to Aruba in November and I really would like to be lighter before my trip.  Just can't seem to stop eating everything in sight.

Down 2.5 to 128lb. Probably due to having an awful cold and not being hungry at all. We'll see how fast I regain it when I start feeling good.

up a few oz but still under 170 so hanging in there.  I'm going back to walks at noon instead of eating at my desk and working through lunch.  The harder I work and the more I get done, the more work is piled on and it's just too much.  Something's gotta give and it ain't gonna be me!

I lost 1.8 lbs this week. I expected my weight loss to be less this week and even plan on checking my scale against the doctors scale next time but perhaps my diet really is working.

I completely forgot I missed my yesterday's weigh in. Just checked and am happy to report i lost that crazy half pound from last weeks gain and an additional 1.5 lbs. thanks Ruth for the water post, that really helped. I have been making sure I drink ALL my water and walking every day.

Still six pounds to go before Christmas for me-not gaining (whew) or losing. I am hoping I am getting more muscle since I am working out a lot more- but that might just be wishful thinking. Oh well at least no gain this week!

six pounds to go- 82 days til' Christmas- SEEMS do-able, I just have to DO it!!

ruthbru, love it! Funny but I don't have a problem with hunger after dinner. I just need to control what I eat during the day.

I can be good all day, but just fall apart about 9 pm (I would put a crying face, but it seems like they have removed the emotions icons.....sad face).
