Cyborg, saw your name on another thread.  Think you are starting treatment today?  I finished last week, I know how anxious you probably are.  I found the first tx to be the hardest.  You will do great, and we will get our hair back!

Cyborg - I was on tamoxifen for 11 months before switching to Arimidex which I have been on now for about 9 months. I have not seen any significant hair loss from either of them.

Cyborg - it looks like you're having the same chemo I did. I had TC x 4 - I did lose my hair, but it's coming back very thick. I do think the Tamoxifen is slowing down the regrowth, not thinning it though.

Good luck today! You will see our imaginations are much worse than the actual chemo treatment, and it will be over before you know it!

Cyborg, the permanent hair loss reported by a handful of women here on BCO is obviously scary and concerning.  I hadn't heard of anything like that when I did TCx4 in 2008, but I think if I was doing it now, I would definitely ask my onc and also peruse the research data for some hard stats on it.  Did you know there's also a system now to prevent hair loss?  It's called the Penguin Cold Caps.  There's a thread here about it.  Women report keeping their hair with it, but it also sounds kind of cumbersome and expensive.  (Not sure... that's just from a very casual knowledge of it.)

My hair came back fine -- very curly at first (like a baby buffalo, according to DH), and took about a year to grow out to a decent length and revert back to it's normal, slightly wavy texture.    Deanna

I did notice that CHEMO really dried my skin out. After buying an over the counter microdermabrasion(?) kit and hydrating my skin it's bouncing back. Now its onto finding more natural products for my skin that works for me. What a journey, huh????

You're too funny!  As a matter of fact, we're really into Western art, so I suppose we both notice paintings with buffalo more than a lot of people would!

Fighter, I am half way through 6 TAC treatments and the skin on my face is really taking a hit.  I see new wrinkles every day and nothing is keeping them at bay...coconut oil, moisturizers, nothing.  I'm going to save my money for a laser treatment when this is all over.

Just for your information.....the 'penguin cold caps' are used a lot here in the UK - and a breast onc friend of mine in Sweden advised me NOT to use them ,since they prevent chemo from reaching the scalp. I just would not want the very small chance of getting scalp mets from using this.

I had  4 x FEC and 4x taxotere and my hair came back ok; it did thin a bit on aromasin. but since stopping nearly a year ago, has thickened up again.

    Hi Ladies,

Well I went to see the lady about Juvaderm etc and it will cost anywhere from $450 - $1,100 to put "things" back to where they should be.  I will think about it, to some it may not seem a lot of money but then I think is this just vanity???  I need to check out and make sure that the stuff they use does not have any side effects with the Femara, plus they now think my thyroid is not functioning correctly and I may have to have treatment for that so I need to check that out too.  The lady at the spa place said may be if my thyroid isn't working properly and the doc medicates for that I may feel and look better and decide I don't need to go with the Juvaderm.  I will give this serious thought, I had always laughed at people who considered cosmetic enhancement when I was younger so it kind of sticks in my throat now - what goes around comes around they say.

On the subject of chemo and hair loss I lost all my hair 10 days after my first treatment, I finished chemo in November 2008 and it took till March for there to be enough showing through to go capless, but now it's doing well.  I always wanted to grow a bob but my hair was too coarse and wavy for that to work however now my hair is finer and much straighter so I have finally got the hair style I always wanted.  Unfortunately lately it has become brittle and hair is falling slightly but again this may be attributed to the potential thyroid problem.  I have to go and have some blood work rerun at the middle of June to recheck thyroid function so until then I will just deal with whatever my health throws at me.  Has anyone else been diagnosed with thyroid problems since taking AIs?  When I read the symptoms it would account for many issues I have noticed that I previously thought were the side effects of Femara, but it could also still be the Femara.

One good tip the lady at the spa gave me was to draw in my eyebrows as they came back very thin and gray after chemo, I never have to pluck them.  It's amazing what a difference it makes to your look just by doing something so simple. Give it a try ladies.

    Have a great day. Gaynor

Gay-if you really thinks it's your thyroid--get your doc to move up your appt. or just order the bloodwork. 6 weeks is along time for thyroid to out of wack. May not seem it., but if your that suspicious. Has your vitad, b12, and folate and iron panel been checked also?

Good info on the grey for the eyebrow filler.

Don't feel bad about getting work done. This is now. That was then. WE WILL live to be allot older. Don't know about the AI's and getting things done other than they can predispose you to infection. So, facial work and potential for elective work, is something to research pretty careful. Good luck with it and let us know what you find out? sas

Hee hee-- a baby buffalo ! How cute! Yeah.

Read through on the penguin cold caps-- concerned about scalp mets chance. I'm concerned about everything.

I am having 4 cycles of TC as well, dlb!

The tips about the eyebrows help! I am hydrating like crazy.

I'm looking into Sculptra. It's supposed to be similar to Juvederm but last longer. I think it's a little more expensive though. So, wrinkle filling and spider vein removal. Those top my to-do list. Vanity, thy name is Joan!

    Hmmm, just noticed:

    Vanity - Sanity

a difference of only ONE letter. Who'da thunk it?

  • Vanity, sanity....that's a good thought.  I find that if I am worrying about little things like my jowls (which are pretty big actually) or my neck, or the crows feet around my eyes, and heaven forbid, that crepe paper stuff that hangs down on the back of my arms (try to keep that one covered....in fact woke up this morning thinking I am going to take back that sleeveless blouse I was so thrilled about getting a few weeks ago) , then I am not thinking about the big picture which involves tumors getting larger, liver function, prognosis, crap like that.  Let's hear it for vanity.  Give me a V....give me an A

Joan - I have been thinking about Sculptra too. I just read about it in a magazine. Let us know if you decide to do it and waht the outcome is. I would be interested in your results!

give me a N, give me and I ..... I hear you all loud and clear!

I need a major energy boost today, just emailed my boss to tell her to pick me up coffee and a bagel on her way into work.  I sure hope she gets the message, and that I am still awake when she arrives at the office.  Her husband, my other boss, told me to go into his office and take a nap if and when I need to.  He was diagnosed with thyroid dysfunction 20 years ago and when I described how I feel he acknowledged everything I am experiencing.  3 cheers for my bosses, well may be just 2 for now, the 3rd can depend upon whether or not I get that bagel and decaf.

The doc did a full blood-work check for my annual physical and they only suspect a problem with the thyroid, everything else came back normal - thank goodness.

I will look up Sculptra during my investigations into Juvaderm etc.  Glad you liked the eyebrow tip, it really does make a difference.

Give me a T, give me a Y. I think it's too late for me, what with (used to) smoking and living in FL. I think I need the laser lift. Looking into it.

    Ladies,

This is my favorite thread right now. Vanity= Sanity for me for SURE. I think the external concerns are part of the health process.... making sure we feel and LOOK like we used to is important!

I've made a pact with myself-- if I get a job offer soon, I will schedule a Botox / Juvederm appt (I have had Botox in the past, but it is wearing off), as well as a hair colorist appointment. We clamped down heavily on expenses after the layoff, so I've not had ANY beauty treatments in awhile.

As for hair color, I am going to an Aveda colorist and attempting to get closer to my natural color. You see, I live in Dallas, TX, where blonde prevails. I have had a colorist that took me to new shades of REALLY LIGHT BLONDE that was fun at first but it is so NOT flattering to me now. I am trying to achieve a honey brown-ish blonde color, which is what I am naturally. (I think)Tongue out

So, I am hoping for the job offer so I can do all of this!!!

  • Have you ever read that magazine More?  It's one for the "mature woman"  Botox scares me.

I think I've mentioned before on this thread that I've had botox on my "mean wrinkle" between my eyebrows. Makes me look happy instead of angry. Only downside is that it lasts maybe 4 months if I'm lucky, because I just get a little bit done at a time (no frozen face, please!). I really like botox and have had no SEs or problems. Scultpra is supposed to last longer.

I get these procedures done on my face to stay younger looking, and I'm just waiting for the day when there's a saggy implosion and people run away in a panic.
