That brings me to another tip. If you have a great backing fabric pattern that is easy to follow, use that as your free-motion quilting guide! Quilt from the back instead of the front and then when you flip it over you will have a fabulous pattern!!

Could you explain how to get diamonds once more Barbe? I am missing something. Thanks Ginger

Oh, Barbe, I know you're right....

It's just that I had this insane vision that if I quilted around each individual animal or leaf, it would look way harder than it really was. But naturally, it WOULD be harder! Undecided And I truly DO suck at free-motion.....

I've done a lot of comfort quilts with the straight lines as well as the diagonal ones. I just wanted this to be fancier. But it would make me crazy, I know.

And I just learned in my FM class the same thing about lines....if the quilt top has mostly straight lines, do your quilting in a circular, or curvy pattern. If the quilt top has more curves, then quilt in a straight line.

Since it's enveloped, I may just quilt straight lines around the brown plaid border and the light blue border, then do the diagonals where picture is. (I guess it will be obvious that I didn't hand-applique them, huh? Wink )

Thanks so much for the advice....

    Aw, thanks, Gingerbrew!

I've been in an awesome "Quilting Class" for the past 3 years. It is filled with incredibly talented quilters, who have been perfecting their craft for many, many years, and then there's me. I kind of got into this "class" by accident...long story....Wink

Even the best quilters in the world are picky, picky, picky!!!

During Show and Tell, everyone just picks apart their work, and we always say how beautiful we think it is. ESPECIALLY quilts that are made as gifts.....they are lovely, no matter what the stitches look like!

I just have to remember that.

I actually got pretty far on my project tonight. Got it all prewashed, ironed, enveloped, and trimmed. The borders and corners look pretty darn good! (I found out that the whole panel was printed wonky on the fabric, and "squaring it up" was near impossible. So I just went with what I had, used the panel as my guide, and cut off the excess.

I noticed that the batting buckled a tiny bit, so I took that as my cue to stop, and walk away from the machine!

Luckily, I think I can ease it out at the bottom, when I slip-stitch, then machine stitch the opening.

But for now....drugs....and a hot shower!!!

Ginger, when you take a square and draw diagonal lines corner to corner on it, the result will be quilted squares. When the body is rectangular and you quilt corner to corner, the result will be diamonds rather than squares. Get a piece of paper and do a small sample. I just did to make sure my vision was correct and it was.

Oh, how I'd love to do some quilting right about now.

I have one dress done except the hem and zipper.  Oh, and a black satin sash.  But it looks pretty good.  I added lots of extra fabric on the outer skirt.  The power mesh fabric drapes beautifully and adding more really makes it look nice.

Funny thing is that I did not use the pattern to cut the outer skirt, I just took 3 yards of the fabric (full width) and gathered it in.  The skirt is 5 ft long!  FDIL wanted high-low hemlines and I want to have plenty of fabric to work with.  Not cutting any of it off until the bridesmaids show up with the shoes they will wear.  The one this dress is made for is 4'10"

Meece, now you're playing with our emotions....post a pic!!!!!

You are funny though. My sister who used to sew a lot of clothes would say "I finished. Except the hem/zipper/button holes/buttons etc.." hehehehee

Well, I feel like I am finished when I can hang a garment on a hanger and it looks like what it should.

Huh, I guess that was her logic, too! Then she would scramble in the end to finish it, though.

Thank you.  The next one has only one shoulder, so the top wil be slightly different.  The last one will have sleeves.

The dresses are going to look wonderful.

I have much smaller news. I bought two pieces of fabric yesterday to make reversable christmas napkins. The prints are both Christmas colors, one striped with red, green and lighter green on white, and one print with lighter green dots on a somewhat darker green background.  You cut a  half circle of each, add rick rack to one arc and sew together. The direction are very incomplete but I will figure it out. Then you fold it back and forth and it looks like a christmas tree. I hope it works! I love that the prints, while christmasy they don't hit you over the head.  I am so happy to have a new project.

Continuing to think of Marybe, this is hard. Love Ginger

    Barbe, everyone!!!

Go to the Martha Pullen site there is a contest to win a free trip to the school of Art Fashion in huntsville Alabama and a spread in the Oct 2013 magazine. My work isn't good enough to merit a win but I think some of you have it in you to win!   I have gone to Huntsville to the school and it is a lot of fun. I met women from all over the country and we all had something in common. The meals are good too and the hotel is also.     I wish one or more of you luck.

    Hugs Ginger

Since I really suck at how much fabric to buy, I over bought yet again.  That's ok because the colors have worked well because right now they are the it colors to have for a baby.  I also have troubles figuring out how many blocks to make and I over make.  Thats alright because I have another gal who wants a baby blanket with these colors so I'm half way there.  I love the D9 block so I make that a lot.  I ended up taking it a step farther and did this.  I'm still on the fence at liking it, but the gal who wants a blanket wants these blocks in them as well.

I like the colors, too.  That's handy to have a quilt already under construction! I'll have to look into the D9 block, I don't think I've ever made it. I tend to make just enough blocks for my project because i am so anxious to get to the point I can put them all together.

    So is a D9 a disappearing 9 patch?

Meece yes it is.  I should've put that because some people don't get that a D9 is the disappearing nine patch.  I was just being lazy and didn't want to type it out.

Ginger, I went to Martha Pullen's site, but didn't see anything about a contest. It seemed it was all about machines...

Never heard of the disappearing 9 block. What does it look like assembled? I don't really see a pattern with them laid out above.
