Veggy - You do what you have to do and not have to deal with this damn beast again. We are all here for you. I'm in with Granny on the group hug!!

Veggy - that is a very hard, personal decision. I had a lumpectomy because my surgeon said I was a "perfect" candidate for one. My tumor was very close to the surface and easily accessible. I wasn't mentally in the place for a MX yet, much less a BMX, so I felt it was just a matter of getting it out and moving on. If I had a recurrence, well, I just don't know what I would do. I'm only about seven months out from diagnosis, so it is all still fairly fresh.
Joining in the group hug!! Hope we don't all squish you!

Veggy I'm in the group hug babe--realllllllllll tight. Your decision on the bmx will be difficult. I did the BMX, but family history made my decision easy. 21 women -19 women first cousins plus three Aunts-------of that total of 21---------11( I was the 12th) had cancer ----8(9) were BC. So, I was actaully into the elective removal track. Mammo was clean, next step was a MRI and then I got the call. Had I not been in the elective removal track, I likely wouldn't be writing this as it was very aggressive. I would have had the next mammo, the next year. From biopsy to BMX was Jan23 to Feb 18th and it moved from a grade 2 to a grade 3. (6 to an 8). -again nothing visible on Mammo in August>>Mri in Dec--positive>> grade 2 in Jan>>grade 3 in Feb. So, easy choice. Of the male first cousins--24 ---three have had cancer and there might be a possible fourth, of the 7 uncles 4 had cancer . Definitely studiable, but can't get anyone interested. Genetic break likely on Paternal Grandmothers side (Lots of cancer) and most likely to all the chemicals used in farming during her young time which was the early 1900's. Paternal Grandfathers side clean traced by cousin into geneology. Maternal side effectively clear.
Which does bring to mind Veggy something that may help in your decision. I did a cancer tree as you can deduce from above( all the female cancers were present except me). Once I saw the numbers on paper that's when I went into the Elective removal process.
I know statistically most BC doesn't present with a history like ours, but as I say when I did the tree, it made my decision easy.
Veggy Love you babe

Veggy - I still have both, had excisional biopsy/lumpectomy, but knew if I had an MX I would want both so I would match. But if I really faced it don't know what I would do. No one can tell you, but we can tell you what we would probably do or have done. What does your instinct tell you right now? Then the day before the decision is made? I was almost ready for mx and the day of surgery would not sign papers until he took that possibility off the sheet and I saw him do it. So see, LOL I might say I would jump and then NOT.
Onto the bonfire of the goddesses, disrespect of other sisters on bco.
oh, and soon, packing boxes.

My gut says to have the left breast removed, period. I'm not sure about the right one. Its not like hair that grows back. I hate thinking about it.

Tomorrow I meet the team of doctors to tell me what the plan is. I want to throw them into the fire even before I see them. One didn't feel the lumps and the other told me that the pain was common. I don't knowif I can trust them. I am taking a friend who is a nurse with me.

veggy - Good for you. Another person is always good to take along. A nurse is even better. Please keep us posted.

Veggy, thinking of you tonight. Hope you got some answers.

I met with the surgeon and chemo doctor. I have to have a MX next month. I'm hoping for reconstruction at the same time. Then I will have 8 chemo treatments or 4 month of chemo. I cried, I asked why and I demanded things my way. The cancer that I have now is a different triple negative cancer and not a recurrence from the last one. The cancer cells do not match up with the last cancer. I have to do genetic testing too. I'm scared. They gave me a stronger prescription for ativan.

Veggy, I LOVE the mean smiley guy! Lots of hugs, lots of loving kindness coming your way from my heart to yours... the fear can be overwhelming, so I am just sending you a virtual hang-on-for-dear-life hug. And a shoulder to cry on if you need.
SAS, hoping you are doing a little better tonight.
Into the fire with students who think I have the power to ruin their careers by giving them a single percentage point difference in a first-year course grade..... they are MAKING ME CRAZY!!!!!!! Only 10 more days until the final exam and they are wound up with anxiety that rivals what mine was/is when I have to see one of the health care providers that I don't trust anymore.
Will want to spend a quiet evening by the fire with all of you next week, with soothing beverage, so in the meantime, just stopping by the fire to say hello and thinking of all of you.0 -
LOL, Linda - my husband teaches high school physics. Some of these kids are dumb as rocks - how they ever got in physics is beyond comprehension - but still feel they deserve a top grade for doing nothing. My DH would be happy to raise a glass with you at any time - and so will I as I come from a family of teachers from elementary to college - but he isn't done until late May, so we have a few more weeks of craziness....

Ahh the sweet fire.... So warming on the feet and legs, and nice if there is just a wee bit of chill in the air with only the need of a light jacket, With brilliant stars in the sky. The sweet fire crackles and sends off sparks. The smell of the hardwood burning. The running of the dogs in play and when they lay close with there tongues out panting and smiling,. The beauty of friends around a fire.

sas - I like your streaming thoughts....Fire can be destructive or life-giving. It depends on how we use it. We really do have a sisterhood around this fire...and we are fueling it with anything negative in our lives. Now that's a good system.
Nancy - I am so exhausted from doing all the work in my classroom while students don't show up, grab all the answers without doing the work, and inundate me with their boring non-original excuses.
My best friend says I can't wear underwires any more....does that mean they go on the fire? I kind of still like them.
Prayers and hugs, ((((((((((Veggy)))))))))) I can't know what you are feeling, but I do know this is a very difficult time for you. Lean hard on those who care.Hugs for all,
Joan

Joan I have had pain with foobs since last surgery in July 2009. Throughout the time, Anything was tried. it varied from Tube tops, to sports bras to full wire to half wire, to no bra. Once pain began after new choice of whatever, I went to next choice. Nights varied Depending on what was giving relief. Left breast with a seroma that took plus or minus a year to reabsorb caused left breast swelling and upper arm swelling -some days of hand swelling all related to activity, Mostly housework. A great reason not to do housework. Paranoid about LE. Positioning at night was right side with left arm on couch pillows b/c they were firm enough to keep arm elevated above body level, thus taking pressure off of axilla/armpit. Progressively, pain subsided , but only in the last six months. Sounds awful , but now I'm seeing improvement. that I thought would never happen. When foobs are particularly misbehaving the halfwire bra is a saving grace. It seems to put them back in place. Sounds weird. What can I say. They then behave till they misbehave and then I use either the full underwire for a short time or the half wire. The full U.W seems to lead to swelling. So, I don't use it much. But to get foobs centered again The halfwire is very useful. Thanks for the streaming thought. Hope something in my missive is useful. Sheila

Into the fire goes the hematoma I had after flap surgery. What a pain in the ass - and that is putting it lightly. So wanted to be in the hospital overnight and then home but that did not happen. Also want to throw in all the lab techs that woke me up every morning at 5:45 to take my blood and could not understand why I was not happy to see them. Really???? Maybe I could find a reason to wake them up and torture them.

Jo, so GLAD to see you back here!!!!! You must be getting better if you are back here at the fire tossing things/people in! Good form!
I was a phlebomist when I was in college, and started my rounds about 5:45 also.... so many times since then I have prayed for forgiveness for waking patients at that ungodly hour.... it was not MY choice, but simply THE SYSTEM that requires lab results be on the chart by the time the docs make rounds at 6:30..... still doesn't make me feel better for having caused such distress for many, but I always was polite and respectful (unlike the way I have been treated on many occasions during this journey).
Joanne, are you teaching in higher ed? Sounds like it from your note. I also am teaching higher ed and counting down the days until end of semester and difficult students. Luckily most of them are bright and dedicated, and I sometimes forge that when dealing with the problem kids. Just one 8 more days just 8 more days just 8 more days......0 -
Jo....welcome home! Hope your hospital stay and inconvenience was worth it and you are happy with the results!
Speaking of fire...got a story to tell. This past week the DH had a follow appointment with the cardiologist who did the procedure on him last fall. His office is in the hospital and need I tell you all what a pain in the ass it is to find parking. There I am with a broken foot and the DH is disabled and has a decal for handicapped parking. Good luck finding it near the hospital. And I will be damned if I have to pay for valet parking! Anyway, after circling the parking garage for close to 20 minutes we finally found a spot. Then I dragged myself across the lot to the doctor's office. Waited an hour and a half to see the doctor. He wasn't in the room with us for more than 5 minutes before there was a knock on the door. A woman popped her head in and asked to see him. Sounded urgent. Actually, in her quiet tone it sounded ominous. Sounded like you were glad it didn't have anything to do with you. Soooo... The doctor excuses himself and we waited for him to return. And we waited and waited and waited some more until another 20 minutes passed. When he finally returned he apologized for being so long and under his breath he said, "I was busy putting out fires.". Well friends, two and one half hours for a lousy 10 minute follow up with the doctor. You know what makes me sick? Doctor appointments! Into the fire goes doctor appointments... Especially the ones where you can't find parking! Oy... Do I feel better now despite my foot STILL throbbing!0 -
welcome back Jo! Heal fast and heal well. ((hugs))
