We're sitting here at Logan waiting to board our plane.  I had the most amazing lobster ravioli at Rino's last night...but we waited 3 hours for a table.  Insanity ruled!  But it was the BEST Italian dish I've ever had.  I couldn't finish it but I wanted to lick the plate!!!

Apple - your new avatar is beautiful!!!

Seaside - aren't you in NJ?  My DH has an upcoming business trip to NJ, not sure exactly where.  But maybe, just maybe we could work something out.  It's a long shot, so we'll have to see if it can be done.

Michelle, just checked out Rino's since I wasn't aware of it....they have photos of their menu dishes that look unbelievably scrumptious! Sounds like it's worth a trip to Eastie....we can put our name in and go visit DS2 in Southie for couple of hours while working up an appetite. What did you do for three hours?? You obviously knew it would be worth the wait.

    Safe travels and fun trip!

Michelle  wow a 3 hr wait, that is stretching the limit, glad it was worth it...labster ravioli sounds devine!!  something you probably wouldnt make at home. When I go to a restaraunt I always try to order something I wouldnt or couldnt make at home.

Kaara  where do we find information on that type of diet?  Internet?  I really need a crash course!  Of course I am having surgery on Mar 19  a little lipo to my sides and put in my boob, as my new boob is a little smaller than the other.  Also getting the nip made (finally!)  The lipo will help with the muffin top, but diet wise I am having a hard time being home all the time now.

My Dh expects something italian on Sundays, so will try to come up with something, maybe just plain spaghetti.

carberry:  It's a simple diet.  Just cut out all sugar and starches (white food) and eat veggies, fruit, lean protein, nuts and seeds.  Try to eat your food raw whenever possible in the form of salads or raw veggies and fruits.  We do a lot of juicing and smoothies with fruits and veggies.

It will be tough to follow for a couple of weeks, but then all your cravings will subside and you will begin to enjoy food as sustinance and not as comfort.  Some call it the Whole Food, or Anti Cancer diet if you want to look it up on the internet.  There are many versions.

Yes bedo, I was pissed off at him and he still pisses me off at time.  But being English and Irish, I let him know whether he likes it or not.

Carrie- I did the Suzanne Summers diet, no white starches and it was all about food organization.  You could eat whole wheat carbs, just not with fats.  No sugar or under 1 gram.  I ate lots of meat and salads- lots of salads with meat!  When we went to Aruba I hadn't had a sandwich (LOVE sandwiches) in 4 months, I realized I had missed picking up food with my hands and eating!!  I had even come up with a way to eat pizza on the diet....but it was hard to stick to once I took a little break.  Good luck with your surgery on the 19th.  Are you excited or nervous or both?

Deb- as always, you crack me up!

Michelle- I hope you are in Florida by now!  I agree waiting three hours is crazy, but I bet you found some  fun while you waited and at least it was worth it!  Imagine if the food would have just been ok?  Enjoy the sunshine!

Lacey- your evening at the ballet sounds wonderful despite the empty belly through it but your late night chinese with DH sounds like it was the best idea!  Love it when things come together!  Also when I did my no carb diet DH would not do it with me, he actually laughed and then said are you serious?  I would not cook him carbs but he would make them himself, lol!  He does accept that in the summer time we eat double veggies and no carbs most of the time.  But after a few days he'll ask if we have any baking potatoes:)

So I finished my bedroom last night, DS#2 seems all better and we put them to bed.  Kind of fed them whatever they wanted for dinner.  We come down stairs and DH says what do you want to do about dinner?  I kind if just shook my head- he says well, I am going to go buy a lotto ticket, think about it.  He left to go to the corner store and came back a half hour later with a pizza- they don't sell pizza.  I was psyched!  He said he was hungry and didn't want to think, just eat, lol!  Tonight I am thinking eggplant parm....we'll see.

Kay it is Sunday- where are you??

Carrie-Good luck with all your surgeries i will be thinking about you!

I find the thing about diets is when you come off them you wanna eat everything you missed while you were on the diet and gain more weight than before you started LOL!

Sun is shining today yay! I might even take a walk but afraid i might run into a beer LOL!

    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

Debbie- LOL!!  Remember, where there is one beer there are always more:)

I agree on the diet thing.  When I was diagnosed I started walking a bit more and only allowed myself one spoonful of rice or potato and only half a piece of bread with dinner.  I am still doing it a year and a half later and I have lost 30 pounds in that year and a half.  I went from a 14 to and 8 or 10.  I am hoping by the end of summer to lose another 10 :)

Laurie- I might even name the "herds" like, bud, red bull, Miche, bush, stella, and of course we cant leave out "Hiney' LOL!

I think the key to the no starch diet is to put enough substitute carbs into the meal..like a sweet potato in place of a white one, or brown rice in place of white.  I use a gluten free spagetti that tastes just like the real thing.  The only thing really missing is the bread and I haven't found a good substitute for that because most taste like styrofoam, so we just avoid it altogether.  Boyfriend found he was allergic to wheat, so that is out.  Dessert is usually dried or whole fruit and nuts.

Once a week I allow myself to have a carb meal with whatever I want.  So far so good.  It's a simple way of eating and I don't have to fuss at dinnertime.  It does help if your partner does it with you.

Laurie:  Good for you on the weight loss...you have to do it the way it works for you, and as long as you're successful it's ok.

Laurie, your weight loss success is inspiring!  Keeping up with two small children must help you get a lot of exercise.

Michelle and Joyce, have a great time in FL.

Kaara, I admire you and you SO for your discipline in following your food plan.  I like "food plan" much better than "diet."

I overate today for the first time in years.  DH cooked the world's largest meatballs in tomato sauce for the Sunday noon meal at my mother's house.  He used 3 lbs of ground beef, 1 lb of ground pork, finely diced onion, a small box of Italian breadcrumbs, fresh parsley, eggs, black pepper and salt in moderation.  Oh, and fresh garlic.  He formed the meatballs and baked them.  The sauce was a combination of Cenco crushed tomatoes and a couple of jars of Bertolli sauce and a can of Hunt's Original sauce.  All in my pantry.

The meatballs were so delicious that I ate two of them, pure gluttony.  Also a helping of Dreamfield linguini and sauce.

DH also made strawberry shortcake.  He baked a Duncan Hines sheetcake and split into halves.  Put fresh strawberries between the two layers and on top.  Mashed some of them.  Served with Fat-free Cool Whip.

My youunger sister and her husband joined DH, my mother and me.  We all feasted.

    Debbie,

And maybe, just to be safe, you should carry a bottle opener rather than a knife! LOL

    Michelle,

I'm in upstate NY... I think Kay is from the Philly area and Tougherthanithought (Sherrill) is from Jersey.... Although we haven't heard from her in a bit... Depending on where in NJ you are going, it would be a 3-4 hour trip from here....

    Laurie,

Wow on the 30 pounds lost!! I'm working on the 20 that I would like to lose! The scale has only gone down 3 lbs so far but, I have been working out 6 days a week and am seeing changes in the way I look and how clothes fit... Now hoping the scale catches on soon...lol! Would love to be down 10 by beachtime in August and 20 by the end of the year! We shall see!

Wow, it felt like I was all day reading to catch up, but finally there. I am so sorry to hear some of the updates. Debbie, I will be thinking of you and your DH and praying for you. It sounds like he will have a rough road, but then he'll be able to put it behind him and forget about it. Sending you virtual hugs.

Sorry about your eyes too Kaara, I will be thinking of you as well and praying for all good news for you. Hugs for you too.

Apple, I am sorry about your hair. I know with the rest you're dealing with, some may say the hair is nothing, but that really made me feel like a sick person. I finished chemo in July and still only have about an inch of hair. I was at my bil's yesterday for mil's 75th birthday and some pictures were taken. I thought I looked pretty good, but seeing how short my hair was in the pictures really shocked me. I would have done better not to look. I hope the chemo and radiation get you to NED. It is wonderful that you can and are still working. Your jobs sound like they're very important to you. And they sound like a lot of fun too! And I agree your picture is beautiful.

Oh I was laughing at Debbie seeing the beer especially when it came right after the comments about the funny typos! But the rest of the posts on it absolutely had me laughing out loud.

Laurie, glad your little guy is doing better. You guys have had more than your share this year.

I was shocked to hear about the snow some of you got last week. We continue to be snowless since that snow and rain/ice we had before Halloween. It was 63 yesterday!

Had a great time at my bil's yesterday for the party. My bil made a filetmignon roast that was absolutely delicious. He also made a quinoa salad and a great yellow cake with chocolate frosting. We brought some fresh fruit, wine and a spinach gratin, my other bil brought some great grilled veggies. I have to ask her how she did them. They were Delish and so sweet. She said something about using balsamic vinegar. I need a little more direction than that.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone, I'll check back in a bit.

Wow, you gals have been gabby today!!!  We are in Ft. Lauderdale and had a great dinner.  It's not very warm - about 65 - and quite breezy.  But there's no snow on the ground and it will be nice tomorrow.

There is a bar across the street from Nico's, and I believe Hauntie said that one of her relatives owns it.  We hung out there and talked to other couples waiting for tables.  This restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives so it's just insanely popular.  They don't take reservations and you have to give them your phone number, they call you when your table is ready!  I think if you go for lunch (they're open a couple days a week for lunch) or get there right at 5:00, you won't face the ridiculous wait.  While waiting at the bar, we talked to a couple from Wisconsin.  She is a doctor and interviewing for a residency in plastic surgery.  She is interested in breast and facial reconstruction, so we had a great conversation.

Kay - good to hear from you.  We do grilled veggies in the summer.  The easiest thing is to get a bottle of balsamic salad dressing and put some in a plastic bag, add your veggies and let them marinate for a while.  Then throw them on the grill, add a little salt and pepper, and they will be yummy.  You could cook them on a Foreman grill or Cuisinart panini grill, too.

One good thing about cool weather in Florida..it doesn't last long!  We were all set to take a drive over to the beach for lunch today when the rain and wind blew in...wasn't expecting that!  Tomorrow should be better so hope ya'll enjoy your trip.

Wow....all this talk about healthy food plans has me impressed with your discipline and left me wondering when I am going to start a lower intake plan. I really do eat healthy foods, but probably too much, and love to have that sweet almost daily. I suppose if I were to try the no sugar /no starch plan, that sugar craving would abate. I'm really impressed Laurie, that you could lose a significant amount of weight while being home with two children. I found that during my kids' younger years, I felt like I was in th kitchen so much, and making/eating foods that appealed to them.....and as I can best recall, experienced some of my chunkier years.

Since I am concerned about the diet related factors re:recurrence, I am meeting with an oncology nutritionist later this week. I'd started to talk about those concerns with RO last week, and she referred me to the nutritionist since she couldn't answer many of my questions. Will be interesting to see what she has to say.

Deb, when are you heading across the pond? Nice!

Debbie, good luck with your DH's appt this week.

And Carrie, best of luck to you with your upcoming procedures!

Had leftover broccoli quiche and leftover lentil/squash soup with kale salad (with carrots, red onions and cranberries in a light vinaigrette dressing) tonight.....and DH polished off the last of the egg foo yung (sp?) for Sunday night easy dinner. Also made a large pot of tomato-based kale soup with cannelini beans for quick dinners this week.

    Have a good Monday everyone....

Lacey- Let us know what the nutritionist says, I'm interested!  I go the opposite way with food and the kids.  I am so sick of getting food for someone every five minutes I never want anything.  I also think years of working in the food industry taught me to never just put food in my mouth when cooking etc.  I spent so many years cooking for others and now my kids that I never "taste".  Now if only I could stop wiping my hands on my butt and thighs or buy a damn apron!

Apple- do you do that?  After working in a restaurant I never use a towel, just wipe my hands on myself as if I still have the apron on?

  • Lacey12
    Lacey12 Member Posts: 2,895

I'll be sure to take notes.....

I'm chuckling at the hands on butt (hiney?) issue....maybe we can find you an apron at Pickety Place...if they have a gift shop....don't know why but it just looks like a place that would have a cute country gift shop. :)

Kaara-Are you close to where Michelle is?

Lacey-Im interrested in what your nutricionist says too.!

Laurie- Im the same way have always wiped my hands on my butt even when i worked in the restaurant with an apron i never used it i wore black tux type pants with a little black apron and the back of my pants were always dirty- My dads wife bought me an apron not long ago i wore it one night because i still didnt use it LOL!

Kaara, you could try rye bread. My mother and brother bake their own, and it is not that hard. But otherwise, many supermarkets carry German, sliced pumpernickel.

  • Kaara
    Kaara Member Posts: 2,101

Momine:  My boyfriend is allergic to wheat, rye, and a number of other grains, so really, bread is out for us.  Once in a while we will cheat and have a white roll..like the garlic rolls at the italian restaurant, but most of the time, nothing.  Thanks for the tip though...I never baked bread in my life, so it would be a challenge.

Laurie...Yes, I wore an apron or 3, daily while cooking.  I kept towels about, but my hands were always slurped up and my aprons were absolutely filthy.  I cut my hair SUPER short and would simply wash it with Dawn before leaving the restaurant..  a really messy job.  I rarely wear an apron now... i just have 'work' clothes while in cooking mode and don't get that dirty anymore.   I remember when my towel hanging from the apron strings caught on fire once.. I literally had to take off my chef coat.. eek... in public!

Kaara. my sis with celiac disease, the noncook, actually makes a pretty darn good, gluten-free bread out of a gluten free mix. It's really good as toast and she just makes it in the processor.

Kaara, I see, so rye doesn't work either obviously. Recently I got some buckwheat flour from the health food store. I don't if that would be ok for you guys, but I made pancakes with it and they were good.
