thanks ladies.  My kids eat almost no sweets.  If they eat all their dinner they get to choose a dessert. 2 cookies, a small dish of ice cream etc.  She said it's the juice and the carbs they eat, carbs turn to sugars and she said the gold fish crackers, graham crackers even granola bars are what is doing it.  So I have explained to both boys that they now will have breakfast and one snack between breakfast and lunch, one in the afternoon and dinner.  PERIOD.  One 4 oz cup of juice, they can make it last longer by adding water to it.  I just feel bad that my youngest doesn't like milk.  I think I might go try to find him a really fun cup and make it is his water cup.  He likes water and chooses it over milk.

I literally started crying when she was talking about it all.  DH was there and was great as usual.  I kept thinking he is 2....2!!!  I really don't want him to develop a fear of the dentist like I have.

Laurie, my kid never drank milk and she is fine. I never touched the stuff either if I could avoid it and I am also fine (not counting the cancer that is), same for my mom. Do NOT sweat the milk stuff. American peds are obsessed with milk and there are plenty of other ways for kids to get calcium. Mine ate yogurt, cheese, sardines and spinach. But if the kid picks water anyway, might as well skip the juice. Nothing wrong with water.

However, you might as well skip the goldfish and granola bars. That stuff is not good for anyone and there is no real reason to get the kids used to it.

Laurie- I echo what momine said your kids will get there calcium in other foods. What do ya think the dentist did to us older generation people?  I am petrified of the dentist, they have to sedate me to even get to the chair.  My kids do not have that fear. Laurie, you are a great parent...I agree that some kids just have softer teeth. I always gave my kids juicy juice...not sure if you can get it...no sugar added....and I always cut it in half with water. Just like with our cancer, you cant predict what or how things effect our health...you just have to do the best that you can.

Debbie  I saw the chew today also and that chicken looked sooo yummy, yesterday was mac n cheese day on the show and i was licking the tv!!  I love that show!

Carrie- I saw that one too, oh if only we had smell avision and taste avision lol!  My siblings are the same as me, when we were little and lived in San Jose, califronia my mom took us kids to a dentist i remember how mean he was and yelled when we cried, he didnt numb us up first, later my mom found out he was a fruad and was working without a license my mom was so upset  not sure what happened to the guy but i think thats why i have such a fear of them.

I didn't go to the dentist until I was 8 or 9 and by then I had a lot of cavities.  The dentist filled them without any pain medicine and I was very fearful after that.  I didn't go to the dentist for the first ten years of my adult life and ended up with peridontal disease and having to have surgery.  After that you take very good care of your teeth and go for a cleaning every three months:(  I always took my kids to a pediatric dentist, but two of them are afraid anyway and hate to go.

Laurie you're doing the right thing with your kids...like someone said, some just have soft teeth.  I have good teeth but bad gums.  You can't win.  The dentist is right...carbs do turn to sugar, so even as adults we have to have limits on those.

Tonight after seeing our naturopathic doctor we took a long drive up the beach and stopped for dinner.  Very nice.

Deb - it's on ABC (805 and 812) on my Comcast cable at 1 p.m.  You can get the recipe at

     www.thechew.com

You can actually watch full episodes on the site.  It's a fun show to watch.

Laurie, how easy our good mothering foundation can get shaken, eh?! I agree with the masses...you are doing just fine...and now just have a bit more info to help you make decisions about what passes those little front teeth. Too bad it was given in such a judgemental, not helpful way. Some kids do just have softer teeth. And, by the way, since you mentioned the pacifier, if you get to the point of wanting to wean DS2, I can suggest an adorable and hilarious kids' book on that topic.

    Love the fun cup idea!

Saw the BS for a follow-up today and she confirmed that my exhaustion was not from the rads effect, but from the Tamoxifen that I've been on for two months. I see the MO next week so she deferred to her for deciding if and what to do about any change....but did say that most people have this effect pass in 6 months to a year. Holy cow!! That is not a small amount of time to feel like I am about to pass out from fatigue. Well, I'll wait to see what the MO says.

Fun to read about your writing career, Carole. I have kid book manuscripts that have never made their way to any publishers...maybe when I retire...which may happen sooner rather than later with this damn fatigue.

Yes, that crow video was hysterical.

To the Pickety gals, my colleague loved all the little items I bought for her gift bag at the NH gift shops.

Quite the entertainment tonight our friend Brett who sang and our friend George got up and sang with him while DH played the bongos my DH is great on those things just love to hear him , he got a standing ovation!  So proud of him!

Debbie  that sounds like so much fun. Sliders are such a great idea, but your right it is easy to try and taste all of them. When we did pizza out on Wed. it was half price night, so our friends got there ahead of us and ordered 4 dif kinds of pizza.. of course I had to try them all even though I cut the slices in half....way more pizza than I ever eat.

Kaara  I don think I am getting that effect from the Tamoxifen. Hang in there and rest when you can.  I already know that you eat healthy:)

Michellle   I keep forgetting to thank you for reposting the key lime pie recipe..THANKS!!

They came in great and he has the nicest smile now and no cavities.

    Hey girls,

I don't post too often. Not venturing out much cooking wise, so feeling like I don't have much to contribute!

However, I try to read and catch up on the recipes and how you all are doing. Prayers are said often and laughing out loud at posts!Laughing

Laurie, I really wanted to respond to your post re: your 2 year olds DDS appt. I had the same thing happen with my DD. She was about 2 as well at her first visit. Her teeth looked fine but were so soft from, of all things, my nursing her! She had some tooth decay on her little molars and I felt horrible! To top it off, I had worked in the dental field for years! She did have some fillings early on, but she is almost 16 years old now. I must say that she has the most beautiful smile ( had braces) but her permanent teeth came in nicely. She had sealants put on her permanent molars and she may have a filling or 2, but literally her teeth are gorgeous!

Just wanted to share our story, too. I so know the feeling of being a horrible mom her let her baby's teeth go bad! Now Lindsay has a beautiful smile and healthy, too!

    Hugs,

    Lexi

Hi all I go to a "Special" dentist that other dentists refer to. I can't handle that drill.  You have to make an appt with him first so he can see how nuts you are and then another one for the actual dentistry.  He asked me " Do you need to be in a twilight sleep with Versed and Fentanyl?  I said, "Of course not!  I just need 1) the laughing gas then 2) the numbing gel then 3) the novocaine then 4) the head phones.  I'm NOT a "sissy!"  He looked at me kindly and said, "Of course you're not a sissy" and smiled.  I saw in his eyes,  "Of Course you are a sissy, every here is a sissy.  That's why you are all here. Do you see the people in the waiting room with their spouses and others near tears?"

Carole,  Did you ever meet any of those heart stopping Romance Cover Men???

    http://www.loveromancepassion.com/whos-on-the-cover-male-romance-cover-models/

I get to go to the dentist today.  I am off.  No drill  Yippee!

I told my daughter all about Pickity Place.  She said I was a nerd.

Laurie, sounds like you don't do anything different than other people!  They are such perfectionists!

    Debbie that Cauliflower sounds good.

Lacey, Im sorry about your se.  I hope your MO works them out!

Carrie Our dentist informed my Mom that "baby teeth don't have nerves" and drilled away!  I wonder what he thought all the screaming was about.haha.  I have an abnormal nerve pattern so they never can numb me right. although they always promise and promise it's never happened. We also got candy after our dentist vist ( from the dentist)  Weird, huh?

For dinner pop cycles and ginger ale and vicoden (oral surgery)

Bedo, your dental post made me laugh! I think because I worked for a DDS, I can picture the conversation in my mind.Smile

Also, for dinner tonight I am making a meatloaf, mash potatoes w/ gravy and am thinking peas. I tried a different meatloaf recipe a month or two back and added a jar of sweet onion pepper relish. My family wasn't very thrilled. My DD actually looked at me and said, "I usually like your meatloaf. What happened"? Uh, so that's what happens at my house when I try to mix things up a little LOL

Laurie, I'm outraged that the dentist dared criticize you when you're my nomination for Super Mom!  And I'm sincere in saying that.

You asked whether I read romance novels and was that how I came to write them?  I had not read any Harlequin romances until I was teaching college prep courses in high school and noticed quite a few of my girl students carrying around copies of the Harlequin Presents series, white cover with a cameo picture of a handsome man and lovely woman.  I borrowed one of the books and read it.  Told my husband, "You know, I could write this."  Whereupon I read some more titles and then plotted and wrote a story of my own, set in Louisiana.  My background in literature made it easy for me to analyze all the components of the stories, what they had in common.  Soon I quit teaching English and began writing full-time.

There are many drawbacks to being a published author.  First, everyone and his grandmother and all other relatives have a deep-seated urge to be a published writer and people ask you to read their manuscripts which are usually not publishable.  And I felt so cruel pointing that out as kindly as possible.  Also, people at parties, especially after a few drinks, volunteer to tell you their fascinating personal experiences which you might want to feature in a novel!

But it was fun having dialogue with editors in New York City.  Fun associating with other writers.  I miss the income and other facets of being a writer, but I don't miss all the hours in front of a computer, pulling words out of my head.

I was all set to cook oysters mosca tonight, a very popular dish that was served at Elmwood Plantation in New Orleans for years.  But after my golf game, one of the women playing in the foursome invited DH and me over to her house for dinner.  So I postponed oysters mosca until tomorrow night.  DH likes this woman's husband a lot because both guys are members of the local woodworkers' guild.

This afternoon I made the starter for Tuscan brown bread.  Tomorrow morning I'll have to remember to take flour out of the freezer.  My freezer is full of different kinds of flour!

Have an appointment in May, going to have the right bottom old fillings replaced with new white ones.  I already had 3 crowns and the left side bottom old fillings replaced.  I just hate the sound of the drilling and the smell.

deborye:  If your old fillings contained mercury, make sure they are removed properly.

Deb, You are too funny! Fortunately, my dentist is not only gentle as ever, but also incredibly handsome. Makes all those previously miserable visits of my childhood fade. Good luck with your "refills". I have to make a decision on my two lower wisdom teeth which over the years have probably put a few kids thru college (not mine!) with all the filling. So now, do they get pulled out or refilled? Tough decision since I'd prefer to avoid each option.

Bedo, hope you recover from your oral surgery quickly.

Carole, hope I didn't re-traumatize you by mentioning my manuscript. ;) Very different genre....I'm all about kids' picture books.

All that talk about pizza resulted in us ordering one.....and a Greek salad for tonight.

Phew!  I think the grandkids are finally settling down, hopefully they will be in dreamland in a few minutes.  We took them to ChuckE Cheese, so we are tired!  That means we had mediocre pizza for supper.  Oh well, we have to sacrifice ourselves for the kiddies once in a while!

All the talk about dentists reminds me that I, too, detest anything to do with a dental procedure.  I've had a death fear since I was a child.  The ultra-sensitive gag reflex doesn't help, either.  Ick.

Carole - I keep my flour in the freezer, too.  I don't use it very often and I got tired of finding little unwelcome visitors in the bag.  The freezer takes care of that problem.  Plus I buy just one pound bags, and I probably take at least 6 months to use it all.

Debbie - my husband orders chorizo with eggs on occasion.  I put it in my chili.

    Nope, no mercury.

My child hood dentist was Dr. Yarad of course he is gone now.  I remember I went in for a filling and he Novocained the wrong side.  I started crying when my Mother came in and she gave him HELL!!  It's funny how you remember things like that.

    God Miss Her.

Michelle, you are way to organized with your freezer dough!  The pic I tried to post a while ago was of a very risque can of beer.  " Old leg humper" with a picture of an old dog.  I'm surprised they had it out there on the shelves for all to see.

I used to love ChuckEcheese.  I loved bopping those gofers on the head with a mallet.

Deb, thank God your mother came in.  Our dentist didn't use Novocain!

Tomorrow, I will treat myself.  Scrambled eggs and ginger ale for breakfast with cheese on them.  Can't wait!

Carol- I laughed at the comment you made about everyone wanting to tell there own personal stories and have you read there manuscripts that cracks me up i guess it would be like a dr going to a party and everyone wanting to ask about every ache and pain they have LOL!

Deb= LOL now if that ain't enough to scare someone i dont know what is.

Michelle- Ooooh, i never thought about putting it in my chili that sounds so good im trying that next time i make it. I use to take my GK's to chucke e cheese and i know what your talking about that place is a zoo and it wore me out too. But the kids just loved it so i agree even though the foods not that great its worth it for the kids.

I keep my flour in the freezer too, i put my sugars, pancake mixes, in the fridge, anything once i open it, it goes either in the fridge or freezer although i dont have bugs here i dont want them so putting that stuff in the fridge elimintes that problem.
