Bonjour from Paris! We are having a grand time, and I am so far behind in writing about our travels.  But I wanted to check in with you all and let you know that the weather is fabulous, the food is delicious and the sites are beyond incredible.

We really are having a wonderful time, and this vacation seems to be passing so quickly even though we are having very long days trying to cram in as much as we can while still enjoying the flavor of the city.

Today we are heading to the Musee D'Orsay, which is where we will see our favorite impressionist artworks.  This museum is a little more manageable than Le Louvre, which has 30,000 objects on display.  By the way, that represents just 8% of the Louvre's collection!  Can you imagine keeping track of all those masterpieces?  And while the Mona Lisa is a relatively small painting, we couldn't help but wonder how artists in the 15th century created "wall-sized" paintings - did they piece them together?  Did they use scaffolding?  I guess a class in art history would have been helpful!

After the D'Orsay, we plan to eat at a cafe that has been rated one of the top ten in Paris.  Of course it's a subjective review, but we're going to give one of them a try.

Speaking of food, here are a couple pictures of our priceless meal from Le Jules Verne:

Cream of Asparagus Soup with creme fraiche
This was my dessert - a decadent chocolate thing that was so gorgeous I hated to disturb it!
The "complimentary" treats - the green round things are almond flavored macarons.  The bowl to the left was homemade marshmallows.

It was a shame, really.  Way more food than any human could/should eat.  But they price it as a 3 course meal, way less expensive than a la carte.  We didn't know that the platter full of sweets would arrive after our meal and most of it went to waste.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

    Michelle

Michelle:  It warms my heart to see that you are enjoying Paris so much!

We're hitting the road today to head for NC, so I'll be out of touch for a few days until I get set up there.

Michelle - i remember ordering a sandwich and salad combo (the cheapest item) at a bus stop in France.  It was like the best meal I had ever eaten.. Everything was ultra fresh and the sandwich (a croque monsiuer?) was absolutely to die for.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croque-monsieur

People were so nice to me when i travelled.. it must have been obvious i was dirt poor, and dirty and needed a bit of help.  At the same bus station, i caught the ferry to London and I had an opportunity to buy a little box lunch.  the owner of the shop cafe went to the back and got me a special sack lunch to take.. no charge.  I don't know if it was old but it sure was good.

an apple, a pear, cheese, bread and some veggies.. also a little sandwich and a bottle of water.

I am really happy you chose to travel Michelle.

    That looks YUMMY Michelle..

Thanks everyone for the compliments on DD.  She is our pride and joy.

I'm back, the appt was uneventful. Staying on the Doxycycline for a few weeks, in the meantime if the pink does not go away or gets worse or I start to run a temp, I am to call right away to come in.

I think I will treat myself to a mani and a pedi today.

    Apple,

Loved your story! Isn't it funny how such a simple meal can taste so good and how an act of kindness is remembered years later!!!

    Kaara, Safe travels to NC!!

    Deborye,

Sounds good!! We tend to get a little spurt of good corn on the cob from down south around this time and we take advantage of it because the next shot we get is local corn in August! Mmmmmm, love, love good corn on the cob!!

Good morning!  Just finished our breakfast of coffee, juice, quiche, and baguette spread with Societe Creme cheese - this stuff is fabulous.  It's like cream cheese but with Roquefort added to it.  My DH has been so good and gone out every morning to pick up breakfast from one of the many bakeries near us.

Haven't caught up on all the posts but will later today.

Eric, I didn't know about pixie sticks or red vines either.  I hate the idea of long commutes.  I've never done it.  Now I hate the idea of employment!

Kaara, safe travel.  Look forward to hearing from you again.  You add a lot to our discussion, especially a positive outlook.

Laurie, thanks for telling us about your brave friend.  I feel very sad thinking about her.

Michelle, wonderful post!  The food in the pictures was so lovely it seemed a shame to eat it and destroy the art!  So glad your trip is measuring up to expectation.

Debbie, the day we ate at the restaurant a whale had been sighted out in the ocean.  Everything about the lunch experience was good, the food, the service, the ambience.

Deb, your daughter is beautiful.  Glad you're recovering.

Yesterday dh and I bicycled 13 miles.  It's 2 1/2 miles through the campground here in Gulf Shores, AL, to get to the Backwood bike trail.  We took the twin bridges part of the trail which was about 4 1/2 miles one way with some curves and ups and downs.  I was pooped when we got back to our camp site.  Also soaking wet with perspiration.

Once we were rested and showered, we went out to lunch at Cosmos in Orange beach and had another delicious lunch.  Crab cakes with a special aioli, butter lemon asparagus, and a green salad with blue cheese dressing.  Dh had the crab cakes, too, but caesar salad and polenta.  The crab cakes were larger than I expected but I ate the entire lunch and was more full than yesterday.

This morning we're going out for breakfast, packing up and heading home.  About a 4-hr. drive.  Last night it rained.  The rain on the roof of the 5th wheel is nice to hear when you wake up for a few seconds and then go back to sleep.

    Hugs to all.

so last nite was the beginning of Old Shawnee Days.. a festival with rides and cotton and candy.  On Thursdays all the tweens buy twenty dollar passes and have fun all nite.  I didn't go.  I usually enjoy just seeing those beautiful kids and their short shorts and makeup.. the flirting, the screams of joy....

anyway, my kids each had several kids come over to eat before hand.  there were 9 at our table.  I made a couple huge Chicago deep dish pizzas.  (a cornmeal crust, with olive oil.. it's really good.  They polished off one of them and I left the other one out so they could eat it.... there is a single piece.. i bet they left it for me.  They are very thoughtful.

i love having lots of kids around.  My kids have been really great about finding good friends... so slouchers or druggies.  I'm fortunate.

I pretty much use this recipe.. it's absolutely delicious and very authentic.  I used to live in Chicago and would save my money for months to go to Pizzeria Uno...

We have nothing like this in Kansas City.

There is a Pizzera Uno in Phoenix. When I worked close to it, Sharon would bring our then infant daughter and meet me for lunch there. Good food and good memories...... I'm glad you mentilned that place. For some reason, I needed a "pick-me-up" this morning. Thanks

Morning everyone!  We made it to NC in record time!  We ate at our favorite mexican restaurant last night.  I was up and out in the yard at 7:00 AM this morning while it was a cool 50 degrees...pulling weeds and trimming bushes to make it at least presentable.  Everything was soooo overgrown!  I worked out there for about three hours before I thought I better take a break or I might not be able to get out of bed tomorrow..lol!  I can't believe I had so much energy, but this place does that to me with the cooler termperatures and lower humidity.  I'm going to need to hire someone to trim all of the big bushes and trees, but I got most of the little stuff done.

Carole...sounds like you are having a great time, and when you bike like that, you can eat anything you want and it doesn't matter because you burn it right off!

Deb:  Glad you are feeling better...your daughter is just beautiful...I know how proud you must be!

Michelle:  Keep enjoying your journey...take lots of photos!

Apple:  That cornmeal crust sounds delicious...is it gluten free?

Next I have to tackle the unpacking...not nearly so much fun as working in the yard!

Laurie- How is your dear friend doing? You have been on my mind. ((((hugs)))))

Seaside- Our BD's are getting closer but it also means were getting older Wink

Michelle- Your food always sounds so good, i looked up the societe roquefort and i think i have seen that in my gourmet market i will have to check it out and mix that with some cream cheese it had my mouth watering.

Carol- Wow you must be in good shape to bicycle 13 miles. Glad you had a good time, be safe driving home.

Apple- We had a uno's pizzaria in Hawaii when i lived there my dh and i would go there on the weekends and eat and lsiten to our favorite band when we first met, sadly they closed down before we moved we were so bummed because we really loved there pizza. Thanks for the recipe i saved it to my favorites.

Kaara- I bet your enjoying that cooler weather

So this morning i woke up chilly because my DH forgot to turn off the overhead ceiling fan like he does every morning before he leaves for work, i was groggy and half asleep but got up to turn it off, i tripped over the computer wires and landed flat on my face i came inches from hitting the entertainment center and probably knocking myself out, i must of slid like going into third base or something because my knees are all skinned and red and my wrist hurts so does my back now, i layed there for a second thinking what the shit!! I wasnt sure if i was hurt or not but i was sure pissed at my husband for a few minutes. LOL! Im fine but i was little shaken not stired!

Carol - I agree 13 miles!!!  Wow!!  Eat what ever you want you have earned it, I don't think I could bike 13 miles, unless maybe if it was really really flat.  It sounds like you have had a great time.

Michelle- Love the stories and the food pics, so glad you are having an amazing trip!

Debbie- Holy smokes!!  Glad you are ok and you sure made the story funny for us, "shaken not stirred"!

Carrie- Every time you mention going out on your boat I smile.  I miss our boat we had some amazing days on the lake.

Apple- as always you amaze me keeping up with the appetite's of those kids!  The deep dish pizza looks really good...I copied it down and will have to try it.

Kaara- So glad you made it safe and sound.  You sound so excited to be back!!  Don't over do it!  Enjoy the no humidity and find some shade to relax in while you sip a favorite beverage.  You've earned it!

DS #2 had his tonsils and adenoids out yesterday and he is being such a trooper.  He never cried once through the whole thing yesterday, not even when he woke up.  For the most part he has been happy and doing great.  As his meds start to wear off he will start to get upset but with  in 10 minutes he is ok again.  The kid ate about 10 pancakes yesterday.  They said if he was really hungry let him try to eat and he could not get enough.  It was a good thing because the codeine would be pretty hard on an empty belly.  He has really surprised us at how well he handled it all.

My friend from what I have been told is not in pain but is incoherent most of the time.  Her family is having a very hard time accepting this.  It is so sad.

I still have no oven.  I ordered it online 2 days ago and it said it was in stock but as of yet it is not ready for pick up.  Grrrr....it's getting annoying not having an oven.  Ohwell.  Life is all about perspective.

I went to the cardiologist today and he was very nice.  He spent a lot of time with me and basically they have no idea why I was having the PVC's.  They have been much better for a few weeks now so he said no need for meds etc.  He said frequently with women when they have episodes such as I did it can be hormone related.  Peri menopause (!!?!!?)  Keep in mind I just turned 37 on Saturday!!  So, I take it as good news as there is nothing horribly wrong and I will just keep trucking.

Hope everyone is enjoying the day!

Hi everyone!  We are in for the night a little early, we are all tired after our day at the Chateau de Versailles.  The place is unbelievable...there's more gold than Ft. Knox!!!  And the ceilings...oh the ceilings are beyond belief.  We took a taxi to and fro, as the local train was not handicap accessible.  Then we went to dinner at a little cafe near us and had a great dinner.  I had duck with a fabulous orange sauce, roasted apples and fried potatoes.  My daughter had a steak with potatoes dauphine, DH had veal milanese and my other daughter had roasted chicken with haricot verts.  But of course, the star of the show was dessert...a beautiful apple tarte, a banana and chocolate crepe and a coconut chocolate crepe.  I'm going to exceed the weight limit when I go to get on the plane...LOL!

Are you drooling, are you drooling toute mes soeurs, toute mes soeurs...

Laurie- I was also going to ask about your son in my last post but forgot. Im so glad he is doing well and had a great appetite what a little trooper he is. Yay!!  Hope you get your oven soon, yes they do come in handy i dont think i could of made a good caveman or girl.LOL! Glad your PVC's are getting back to normal. ((((((hugs))))))) on your friend.

Michelle- There ya go again making me hungry and drooling. YUMMM!!! When do you return?

Laurie:  Glad you DS got through his surgery with no mishaps.  Kids are troopers!

Michelle:  You're killing me...those desserts!  I gained two pounds just looking at them!  Now those would be worth wasting calories on.

Debbie:  Good heavens...what a fall.  I guess the good news is your bones must be really good since you didn't break any;)  I'm glad you weren't hurt.

We just got back from Lowes and Sam's which always means $$$!  Hot water heater, pressure cleaner, little things to kill the wasps, plus a new computer for me...mine died last year before we left...I'm using an old laptop now that just drags along.  It is actually chilly here!  I love this weather.

Michelle- I agree yum!!  Find me some salty food too :D

I have to laugh right now.  DH is cooking dinner, he is going stir crazy being in the house.  He took the last 2 days off because of the tonsils and to help me out where I had to go to the Dr today.  He is making a dinner that he wants that he has never made before as it is my family recipe.  So instead he asks me every minute...what do I do next?  Even when it came to starting white rice, he couldn't read the box, easier to ask me.  LOL.  I butted in for a minute to get the sauce right and he watched me with disgust, he says "I can cook ya know."  I just smiled.

OMG Michelle!! Those pics are bordering on 'food porn'.....lol!!! Since there are only 3 desserts, I have to ask who had the willpower to resist or did you all share?

I am just so happy that you are having such a wonderful time!

    (((((( Debbie ))))))

Had to laugh at Shaken not Stirred but, OUCH!!! That sounds like it hurt alot! I know that feeling of falling and laying there while you try to figure if you're OK enough to move! I slipped on ice a couple years ago going out to get the mail and went down like a ton of bricks flat on my back! I layed there right in the middle of my driveway simultaneuosly hoping no one saw me and praying that someone would find me if I was really hurt! No broken bones but, I was pretty sore for a few days!

Yep, we're getting closer to the big day (Lacey, too).... We may be getting older BUT we are not getting old....lol!!!

    Kaara,

Glad you made it to NC safely!!

    Laurie,

Glad your son's surgery went well! I know when they took him off to surgery it must have been so scary and nerve-wracking but, I am always amazed at how resilient the little ones are! I bet those pancakes tasted delicious!!!

Michelle everything looks yummy! I remember going to Paris and trying to be polite and speak French. The kind pharmacist let me try to explain in French for 20 minutes that " my young girl" had a headache.  We both knew that it would be easier in English. At the end I blurted out, " is it like Tylenol?"  She said '"yes" I am so glad that you are having a good time and that everyone seems to be doing well.  My job has taken over my life, so I have given up violin, exercising, and now, checking in.  I am hoping that things get better, but hope to be back soon. Hugs and love to all until I can get back.  :)   PS for dinner Kimchi

Michelle, that food looks wonderful. I'm very glad you're having a good time there....

Deb, it sounds like you're getting better....At the risk of sounding like a "dirty old man", your daughter *is* beautiful.

And Debbie.  Ouch.  Don't do that.  But I'm sure you already knew that!  :-)

Kara.  Look for hornets' nests that have fallen into the tall grass before mowing.  I found out they can fly faster than I can run.....

And finally, Laurie.  I'm glad your son is doing well.  I have asked Sharon a million questions about a recipe I was cooking....often it was just an excuse to get her next to me. Trickery does work!

Our daughter had another softball night and again I didn't get home from work until it was too late to cook, so again it was one of those snack shack nights.....tonight it was Laffy Taffy (banana is the best) and a diet coke.

Laurie - glad your DS is improving. It's so hard to watch our little ones be sick.  I remember when my son was 7 and had to have his appendix removed, I'm not sure who was in more pain...LOL!

Yes, we are sharing desserts - it's a free-for-all, really!!!  My DH, the older DD and I are doing so much walking that we're eating whatever we want.  My younger DD, the one who is stuck in the wheelchair...well, we're killing her with all this food.  She can't walk around and she says she's going to gain 10 pounds on this trip!

I'm actually surprised by portion sizes here.  We have all had meals that were very big.  I always thought that was an American thing, but maybe it's made its way here.  I don't think any of us has cleaned our plate unless it was a salad or we shared a sandwich.  Yesterday at a cafe in the Chateau at Versailles, we bought two sandwiches and two desserts, which was plenty of food.

    Kaara Member Posts: 2,101

eric:  Thanks for the tip on the hornets...funny you should mention because last year I was wondering where they were all coming from and low and behold, I looked up at my roofline one day and saw the biggest nest ever!  I wasn't about to attempt to knock that down and risk being stung, so we called a professional exterminator who also was surprised at how large the nest was.  He had to come out twice to get the job done!  Believe me, I checked very carefully before I did any outside work yesterday.  Today I feel like I was hit by a truck from all the yard work and I still have to bundle up all the trash in bags...not looking forward to that!  I complain a lot, but I enjoy the work...if not....I would just hire someone!  I'm itching to plant my flowers, but think I'll let things settle for a few days before attempting that task.  We still have to pressure wash the decks and siding.

It's going to be sunny out today...I watched it rise over the mountains....a beautiful peaceful sight!  A good day for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway!  I bought a book yesterday on backroad drives in the western mountains of NC.  Should be fun to explore...thought I'd seen everything, but no...there is always more!

    Have a great day everyone!

Michelle Holy deserts!  that could be my meal, just desert.  Enjoy every bite and dont worry about the calories till you get home.

Debbie  It might be easier next time to just throw an extra blanket over yourself...LOL Hope you heal fast.. that is one of my fears now that I am older, is falling. Our boat platform is soo slippery and I am so afraid of falling on it and breaking something.

Kaara  So jealous of you being in NC   that is my dream to retire there! Looking at the New Bern area so that we can keep our boat on the river.  I also worked like a dog in the backyard yesteday because it has become so cool here this week, but it feels good to get the gardens all in good shape, I cant work in the heat anymore, makes me physically sick.  Enjoy your travels.

Laurie  glad your son did well.  My son had his out when he was four and did amazing...ate chicken noodle soup when he got home.

On the day that I worked all day in the yard I came in the house at 7pm and still had to find something for dinner, so took our leftover grilled chicken with zucchini, onion and red peppers sauteed all and added tortellinis with a garlic white wine sauce and it was superb....my DH couldnt get enough, ate two plates and took the rest to lunch the next day.

carberry:  That dinner dish sounds great!  We're in western NC...I've never been to the outer banks but have that on my bucket list to do.  The heat makes me sick as well, so I feel so blessed that it was cool when we arrived...gives me energy to do what needs to be done.

Laurie- Funny story on DH cooking, mine does the same he asks where everything is and how much of this and that it is so much easier to do it yourself. Now i just have him do take out if im not up to cooking.

Seaside- LOL on the food porn! I fell on ice last december and got hurt pretty bad still having pains and stuff from that. Today im pretty sore. everything hurts and have a headache weird how you hurt worse the next day.

Bedo- Sorry you are having to give up some of the things you love for working right now. Take that extra time off you have coming and enjoy!

    Eric- Thanks lol!

Kaara- Hope you get rid of the hornet problem they are scarey.

Carrie- I agree on the extra blanket lol. Your dinner sounds really good.

Just made pancakes and fresh strawberries for breakfast, but think im going back to bed although nothing is broken im sure sore i had an instant headache when i fell and now it wont go away unless i take some tylenol and everything hurts on my body, guess im getting old or as seaside say, older hehe! my dh said he will figure out somthing to get those wires out of the way so i wont fall and kill myself lol!

I just made a cheese cake "pie"....I've done this since college and I have no idea where it originated.  So, if the recipe belongs to someone...thank you...

An 8 ounce (by weight) block of cream cheese

A 14 ounce (by weight) can of sweetened condensed milk.

I use the milk can as a measuring cup so I don't have to clean a real measuring cup.

1/3 of a can of sour cream (works out to about 1/2 cup)

1/4 of a can of lemon juice. (works out to about 1/3 cup)

I mix all of this together with an electric mixer...it helps if the cream cheese is at room temperature..and then pour it into a 9 inch pie shell and put it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving.

*IF* I have time, I'll start with slightly less lemon juice and continue to add it as I'm mixing the filling until the filling looks like it would require some "encouragement" with a scraper to get into the pie shell...otherwise I just use the above amount...

Cherries or a cherry pie filling on top is a nice touch..My daughter prefers it plain.
