I microwave my spaghetti squash, similar to Eric's method. I usually cut it in half lengthwise before nuking then add a tiny bit of water so it steams nicely, cover with waxed paper and zap it.

If the big cleaver is handy, I'll do it that way too. Cutting into an uncooked squash with a regular knife.....I feel like I'm going to stab myself...so in the interest of not going to the hospital, I cook it whole, even though Michelle's way works much better. :-)

BTW, my wife's family is all from upstate NY.... "Alex" Bay, Clayton, Black River, Crogen......

Eric - you're right about cutting into the raw squash...I usually let my 6'4" DH take care of that for me.  Ah, Alexandria Bay and Clayton - been there!

Someone I know, not me, didn't go to work today.  Instead, she slept for 12 hours, took the dog to the dog park, weeded the garden and is now going to watch trash TV.  I can't even call her because her phone is turned off.  Can you believe the nerve? She told me before she stopped talking to everyone that she was going to order dinner from "Foodler" an online delivery service.  And, now that she has time, figure out who poo'd on the rug.  There are three suspects.  She also said that she may order clothes on line, but who knows, it sounds like she has lost her mind... wouldn't you agree? She gave me some red frilly lettuce from her garden.  It will look beautiful in a mason jar salad.

Oh, I almost forgot,  coming up on my one year diagnosis and finally had time to set up an follow up RO appt, a follow up SO appt and a second MO appt

Recipe for leftover turkey:  Make a salad of field greens, or any lettuces you like.  Add dried cranberries, chopped roasted hazelnuts or almonds, crumbled cooked bacon.  Top with the turkey (or chicken).  Make a dressing of 1/4 c. cider vinegar, 1/2 c. vegetable oil, 1/4 c. dark br. sugar (use lt br. if that is what you have), 1/2 t. paprika, 1/2 t. dry mustard, 1/2 t. Dijon mustard.  The dressing is kind of a sweet and sour - everyone I have fed this to wants the recipe!

debbie - Wow on the dinner!

Happy Birthday to the birthday ladies!

Phone in the toilet (or pool, or sink, etc.) turn the phone off if it isn't already.  Take the battery out and put all the pieces of the phone and battery in a bowl of uncooked rice, completely covering all of the pieces.  Leave it overnight.  This actually works - both of my kids were lifeguards!

Deb - so sorry about your dad, so hard to lose a parent - they are our anchors in the world - I still miss mine, I was a daddy's girl.

Bedo- I think your friend sounds pretty smart!  Too bad you couldn't take a day to yourself ;)

Debbie- Your dinner sounds amazing and yay for a shopping trip!!

Michelle- So glad you aren't having a lot of SE and may have another trick to add to your bag!

Carol- here is another idea for left over turkey/chicken meat

    Chop Suey

    1 cup sliced onion

    3/4 cup chopped celery

    8 ounce can water chestnuts

    2 TBSP vegetable oil

28 oz can bean sprouts, drained

    1 Tbsp cornstarch

    1 cup sliced mushrooms

    8 oz can bamboo shoots

    3 cups cooked chicken/turkey

    3/4 cup chicken broth

    1 Tbsp soy sauce

In a large skillet cook veggies in hot oil for about 3 minutes add chicken, bean sprouts, water chestnuts and broth to veggie mixture.  Cook until thick and bubbly.

Bedo - I hope your "someone" is having a perfectly "nothing" kind of day!!!

SpecialK - I have heard that trick and that it works.  My phone mishap was about 10 years ago and I worked for Sprint...so I walked over to the store that was on campus and had another one in no time.  Nowadays, I'd definitely try the rice trick.

Laurie - I haven't made that chop suey recipe in decades!  It was one of those things I learned when I was in my teens.  It works well with leftover pork or beef, too.

Michelle- When I was a kid it was one of my favorites.  I used to ask for it and understood by the age of 10, unless we had eaten a chicken or turkey recently it wasn't going to happen.  My mom used to make pork fried rice to go with it.  I have never had both pork and turkey on hand at the same time to do it?!

DH is going to be late again tonight.  I am hating Bike week in NH I tell ya.  For him it is all about beer sales and this is a big week for them.  So....who knows what I might find to feed me and the boys?  I am craving pulled pork sandwiches, I am going to do that tomorrow in the crock pot.

Sprint!!??!! I'm an engineer for Verizon, so I have to say that! :-)

My family and I been invited to spend a couple of days at my buddy's and her husband's new home up north...where 80 degrees is a warm day. I'm looking forward to it and so is Sharon.

Funny stories on the phones!  Moonflwr- Sorry you had a bad day and lost your keys that def would be upsetting.

Carrie- Your trip down the canal sounds so nice you must be having decent weather there.

Gardengumby- Yes they are expensive thats for sure, not a place you could go to every week. Luckily we didnt have to pay the $260.00 bill not including the wine. but did leave a $100.00 tip which was so worth it. I forgot your on the west coast too i think there are many of them on the west coast, but was our first expericne.

I love brussel sprouts and speggitti squash. Dh does not like the squash but loves the brussel sprouts. Im not a fan of frozen veggies but do like the brussell sprouts frozen. If i make them fresh i cut off the tops and make a criss cross and boil them, then put them in some butter and garlic powder.

Carol- You can make what i call a turkey bird sandwich, i put turkey cooked bacon tomatoes and jack cheese on sourdough bread and grill it, it is wonderful. or make a turkey gravey and put it over some bread. Although you probably wanted something more healthier lol!

Bedo- Your post cracked me up. I wonder who that someone is? LOL!  Congrats on your 1 yr cancerversary. Hope things go well with your appointments.

Michelle- Glad your doing well on the xeloda hope it continues. I also forgot to mention how darling your GD is, in the pictures on FB. She is so cute. I can see why you would be so proud!

Speciak- Great tip on the phone and your recipe sounds yummy.

Laurie- Your recipe is making my mouth drool, wish i had the ingredients on hand i would make it for dinner tonight. Its been awhile since i had chop suey and just love it. Glad your little one is back to feeling normal again.

Eric- Thats funny! of course you have to mention it. hehe! If if makes you feel better me and Dh are verizon carriers. :-)))  Maybe thats why when he golfed a few weeks ago and lost his cell phone on the course somewhere, it wasn't located for 3 days in the pouring rain, he thought for sure when he got it back he would have to throw it away, guess what, it still works fine. Unbelieveable!

Guess i will make meatloaf for dinner havnt made that in awhile. with some steamed broccoli. boring but good.

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT. Today is much better. I told my husband, crying hysterically, and all he said was, they were just keys. I said they were the new ones, he said those are always the ones to go. So, who is this man and what did he do to my DH? LOL. someone asked when I finish chemo, had my last tx last week, except have a year of Herceptin left. Thanks again for being here.

LoL@moonflwr- Maybe your Dh is trying to keep you calm, my hubby does that too, i tell him, hey if i wanna be upset then let me be upset. But that is sweet that he was understanding. Congrats on finishing your last chemo! hope your Se are gentle on you.

I decided to make pork chops, less work. I guess i will make it saturday instead. tomorrow is dinner out but frankely i would love nothing more than to stay home and not eat for a whole week.

Eric - can you hear me now???  LOL  My Sprint phone was fine when we lived in the Kansas City area, but it sucks big time here in NH near the lake.  But I hear everyone's service is bad here.  We actually had to concede to a landline because every call on my phone goes to vmail that I get...eventually.  Can't beat Sprint's price for unlimited data, though.  But then, yours is probably free  Laughing

We had garlicky grilled pork chops tonight along with cole slaw and waldorf salad.  The chop was yummy.  I didn't think I was all that hungry, but I managed to eat the whole thing!

Debbie - thanks, she is a little doll for sure!

Moonflwr  Congrats on being essentially done....thats the worst..the herceptin will go by in a hurry and hopefully not cause you any distress (it didnt for me)  The husbands never cease to amaze us, sometimes mine gets mad at the little petty things, then lets the big things go, and they say we are a mystery.

Had a get together at the yacht club with girlfriends from my old job, lots of fun and great snacks.  Made some zitis for dinner to go with the leftovers from last night.

Bedo Hope your friend had a luxurious day, as I am sure it was well deserved...congrats on the 1yr annivers.

SpecialK  thanks for posting the recipe for the dressing, I need to learn to make my own.

I am smiling as I read the posts of our DH's keeping calm and being supportive no matter what we may do.  I know I am thankful!!

Cell phone in toilet....I always take my cell phone out of my pocket before I go into the bathroom.  About 2 months ago DH was out with the boys doing something and I was cleaning the bathroom.  He called me and I answered, while cleaning the toilet and plunk it went in!  I was so mad!!  I took it apart and put a hair dryer to it, left it alone for a couple of hours after I put it in the car.  The heat from the sun  I thought would help dry it out and it worked!!

So- Dh is still not home, I have not eaten dinner as of yet and it is 9.  But I have had two glasses of wine:)  I guess it is time to go find something.  I am thinking some veggies and dip.

  • Tazzy
    Tazzy Member Posts: 1,442

Veggies and dip goes well with wine.. especially after 2 glasses :-)

I made hummus yesterday - cant believe I've never done it before - easy peasy and so much tastier than shop bought.

DH is just home.  Pork chops, bi-colour corn, and coleslaw salad for us.

SpecialK - I would love your salad dressing recipes.  I actually printed off your last one.   Since being off work I am really into making my own stuff - salad dressings being one of them.

LoL laurie, funny how we get mad or upset at our DH's even if its not there fault at least i do, i was upset at him when i fell a couple weeks ago  but it really wasnt him i was upset at, but they stay calm through all our hysterias. haha! Well, nothing wrong with wine for dinner!Foot in mouth

Tazzy- Looks like a pork chop night for us all.   Mine were good too. How did you make your hummus?

SpecialK- I too would like for you to post some of your dressings.

We just got back from dinner and an awesome concert featuring music from the Bee Gees.  Everyone was dancing in the isles...it was so much fun!

Dinner was at a local italian restaurant.  We had calamari for an appetizer, and the grilled trout for the main course.  It was half price wine night, so we each had a glass.

I'm so wound up from the concert I won't be able to go to sleep for a while, so think I'll read.

    Night everyone!

Carole:  You would have really enjoyed it!  Those songs and the words were amazing!  This little theater we go to is one of the best in the country for live performances..people come from all over the tri state area to attend.  There are concerts all summer...upcoming is the Beach Boys.....we'll be away during that time... then Simon and Garfunkle.  I can't help but compare it to some concerts we've attended in Ft. Lauderdale where you go to this huge venue, sit in the nosebleed seats where you can hardly see the performers, pay $20 for parking, and then people spend the entire evening looking at their iphones instead of watching the show!  It boggles my mind that some folks can't disconnect for even a short time from the outside world to enjoy a live performance, but I guess that's what young people do these days.  The crowd was definitely more mature last evening;)

Looks like yet another cloudy day here..no more rain I hope!  All the rain we've had and still my little plants are drooping and I must go out and water them.  The soil here really dries out quickly.

    Have a great day everyone!

I couldn't believe how easy the hummus was and it was someone on this thread that mentioned how to make it (and as I have a chemo brain so bad lately I cannot remember who it was and I dont want to guess as I know it'll be wrong - Carole was it you? ha ha !!).   But it was - can of chick peas, zest and juice of one lemon, quarter tsp. salt & Pepper, couple cloves of garlic crushed, 2 tbs olive oil, put all together in a food processor and pulp until mashed up.... can add olives and anything else which takes your fancy.   Its soooooooo much better than shop stuff.

And Debbie that is what DH's are for - I have a fridge magnet that says "to save time lets just assume I am right".

Kaara your evening sounds such fun... and half price wine... I like that idea.

Well we have a really sunny day here so finally I can get into the garden.

We have organic lamb chops for dinner tonight.  I met a friend for lunch yesterday before my appt. with my BS and she gave them to me from her Mum's farm... yum, yum.   Not sure what to do with them yet, but I have all day to think about it... unless you have some ideas too.

    Enjoy your days.

Fresh salmon...how great is that!  Nothing better....went salmon fishing once in Oregon and caught a nice one.  Fishing license $40...guide....$100....dinner....$75....packing and shipping....another $75....the experience...priceless!!  Glad I did that one pre retirement;)
