I hope this weather doesn't ruin Rebekah's plans for us all to meet up with her FIL's.  They are in Portsmouth NH right now,  Tomorrow we were going on the MS Mount Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee but that may change until Wednesday.  Tomorrow might be Kittery or something like that, I do need shoes and a pocket book for he wedding, maybe I will find something tomorrow.Laughing

I just got chewed up by mosquitoes while trying to water the plants....it hasn't even rained here so don't know where they came from.  I should have put on my long pants and jacket but thought I would just run out quickly..now I'll be nursing bites all evening..ugh!

Tonight I made a quonia pasta with artichokes, mushrooms, red pepper, carrots, garlic, lemon and capers in a artichoke pesto sauce that I bought at the organic grocery.  It was great...nice to have pasta for a change.  I just realized that this was a completely meatless day for us and I'm not bothered by it at all.  We had a huge salad at lunch from the salad bar at our grocery store.  It was so fresh...I couldn't do better at home.

Off to do the dishes and then see what Emily on The Bachelorette is up to this evening.  She's very pretty, but has a good head on her shoulders.  I expect she is going to make a good choice, unlike some of the others who always pick the bad boys.

Special K- Those pictures were scary!  I am glad you are ok!

Debbie- I love how often you eat avocado, I love it and don't eat it often enough.

Deb- I think the weather turned in time for the evening to go well?  The sun poked out here at the end of the day.  Hope everyone had a great time.

Carol- Glad your trip is off to a good start!  It sounds relaxing with the walks and the cafe.  Have fun!

Michelle-Glad you didn't get hit hard, on the radar it looked like some of them were pretty strong and near you.  I hope you never dragged that hose out to vacuum and just relaxed.

Dinner was good tonight.  The boys were happy to have spaghetti and chose banana bread as their dessert for eating their meal, kind of funny.  I fell asleep for a half hour while getting DS#2 down for the night....now I am wide awake.  Going to try to read and see if that helps.

SpecialK... those pics were really scary - the force of mother nature eh?   Happy you are safe.

debbie6122....my DH is the same where golf is concerned - would need the kind of weather that specialk is experiencing before even contemplating not playing.

Mmm. avocado - Laurie I dont eat enough of it either.

Tonight DH cooked salmon fillets and steamed some veggies - it was really flavourful and to be honest 3 days PFC he could've done whatever he wanted.

Had the one skin cancer taken off this afternoon, and another location biopsied.  Still windy and rainy, but seems to be settling down.  DH works at MacDill AFB, they had a delayed start this morning as they had flooding at the entrances to the base!  Didn't eat dinner tonight - feeling kind of bleh, I think it is because my chest hurts from the procedure this afternoon - this spot was right near my port.  My threshold of pain is high but I am kind of nauseous tonight.

tazzy - made me laugh to think of golfing with the trees blowing sideways, lol!  In all seriousness, we were all lucky in the neighborhood not to have any injuries, just property damage.

kaara - I am rooting for Emily and Sean!

Deb- Saw your beautiful dress on FB is that the one you are wearing to the wedding? Just gorgous! And my favorite color too! Hope the weather stays nice for your plans tomorrow.

Laurie- I could eat a avacado everyday. They cant be mushy though, have to be very firm once they get to the too soft stage i toss them where other people might eat them. I eat them with everything, lately my new favorite is some cottage cheese with some avacados with some balsamic dressing. Hope your having a nice glass of wine with your book and relaxing.

Michelle- Hope you relaxed all day and got some rest.

Specialk-Hope the results come back ok on the biopsys. glad you were able to get it done today.

Tazzy- Your salmon dinner sounds good.

Oh and Eric i forgot to say glad your Sharon was feeling better.

Had sloppy Joes for dinner ( i really wanted to say sloppy hoes but didnt) lol! Story behind that rather than the typo errors. haha! macaroni salad and sweet potatoe frys, good and easy. will tell you the story behind sloppy joes tomorrow.

I agree Emily is beautiful, just hope she sends chris home dont trust that guy seems like a maniac to me.

speaking of topless.. i remember streaking in college, with 3 other girls across the football field.  a couple of officers awaited us.  We noted that they weren't real police officers, just campus security.  We ignored them (ran away)  and went on our way to meet our clothes.

    kind of embarrassing.

Apple - lol...what crazy thing have you NOT done?  You are amazing!

SpecialK - I am impressed you were able to get out yesterday.  Tropical Storm Debbie has made national news and the scenes are horrific.  I like your saying "fake it 'til you make it" - I may have to borrow that one.

Ah, avocadoes - love them.  The best ones I ever had were hand picked from a tree in the back yard of one of my co-worker's inlaws in Florida.  He brought a couple back for me.  If you've never seen a Florida avocado, it's a behemoth in comparison to the usual Mexican Haas variety that you usually find in the grocery store.  In this picture, the middle one is a Haas and the one on the right is what I'm talking about!  Now that's an avocado!

I talked to JoyceK last night and she was prepping for a colonoscopy and endoscopy.  She's been having some bleeding problems of unknown origin, and had to be transfused last week.  She felt a lot better after the transfusion but now her docs are on the hunt for a cause.  Her dad (who is 91  1/2) has had a type of anemia and she may have inherited the same issue.  But they want to rule out the "big gun" reasons to be sure.  She promised to call me this evening to let me know she's ok.

I had my last Xeloda treatment of this first cycle, so now I'm off for the next seven days.  So far, so good except I think I'll be passing on any spicy food or overly carbonated beverages.  I had this same issue during chemo last year.  My soft tissue in my mouth and upper esophagus are a little inflamed so I need to avoid foods that cause irritation.  More watermelon and iced tea, less diet coke and tacos!  If this is the worst of it, it's not a big deal.

And Laurie - that vacuum hose never made it out of the closet yesterday.  It will happen today, for sure.  And I need to get something for supper tonight so a visit to the grocery store is in order.  I could make spaghetti...it's cool enough today.  DH would be happy with that and I'd drive him crazy this afternoon with the smell wafting up to his office.  Hmmm...torture...I think I like it Kiss

Debbie  You sure are wreaking havoc in the south!

SpecialK  Very scary  glad your damage was minimal.  I have a brother in Florida, but they were up here in NY for all of the worst of it it.  Have not heard how their home fared through all of this. Hope you get back to feeling better.

Tazzy  Hope those SE's fade fast and you are on the road to feeling like eating again, now you can start counting the days PF*%* Chemo

Michelle  I love the pic of you in the pool on the hair thread, with your darling grandaughter.  Your new chemo wont make you lose your hair again will it? Your just so damn cute!!

Not much to report meal wise, I think we just picked our way through the weekend, being out and about. Snacks on the boat, although I did make a sausage spinach quiche and cut into squares as an appetizer on the boat.

Tomorrow we are going to the casino to se Eddie Money  will do the buffet there prior to concert.

Funny thing is...we have a sign at the end of our dock at the marina that says "dock one, party naked" It is not unusual for some of the boaters to go out at night and skinny dip....I have never joined in, even before the big C.

Carrie - no hair loss on Xeloda...woohoo!  And have fun at the casino and seeing Eddie Money.  My son bought us tickets to see the Charlie Daniels Band in mid-September, that should be a great show!

I have an embarrassing moment, speaking of embarrassing....  - i might have mentioned it earlier.  I was driving along, and there is this darling farm right around the corner from us that raises unusual animals..... miniature horses, goats, llamas.

    http://www.minibreeders.com/bearfarms/

anyway i thought i saw a dead baby donkey with it's mother standing over it.  So i went up to the front door and told mr. farmer.. "I think you have a dead baby donkey in the front over yonder (over yonder- where did that come from?)

he said DONKEY!  that's not a donkey - it's a horse and it's taking a nap.  So then I said - 'Do you have any llama hair for sale? (cause my friend wants to buy some) and he said with great irritation - "didn't you read the sign?"

    i never saw no sign.

    so i apologized and left.

Anyway i saw him the other day mowing at the top of his property and I waved to him.. he gave me the biggest happiest wave.  I felt so much better.  He is really handsome and i think now we are friends.  I'd really like to visit and take some pictures.

    glad you are oK SpecialK

Thanks all you lovely ladies - feeling better this morning!  Things seem to be calming down around the Tampa area.  DD volunteers at the Clearwater Aquarium, where Winter the little dolphin with no tail is from the movie - she had to check to see if the bridges were open so she could get over there this morning!  Roads are re-opening but sadly they found a mother manatee and her two calves on Bayshore Blvd, picture below - the mother was dead but they rescued the babies.  They have a manatee hospital at the zoo here so hopefully they will be OK.  Bayshore has some of the most exclusive homes in Tampa, but it is right on the water, so this happens from time to time.  DH usually drives down that road to get to work in the morning!

Love avocados - I am a California girl where many of them are grown, but they are the smaller ones from Michelle's pic above.  I put them in salads all the time, but also love them on a piece of toast with a little cream cheese - ate that a lot during chemo!

Sorry to hear about JoyceK - I hope she is doing better very soon - I have had many an endoscopy, they are not fun.  Hopefully she will be asleep and none the wiser.  One of mine was with "conscious sedation" because I needed to cooperatively swallow at certain points, not doing that again!  I am glad she feels better after a transfusion, most people do.

apple - your streaking story made me laugh!  We had streakers at my HS graduation ('74) and my son's friend did it at a HS football game ('06) - the next generation of streakers!

michelle - so glad to hear you are handling the Xeloda, and glad you get a break coming up.

People! please stop with the avocados ;) I LOVE them in any and all forms, and having had to mostly give them up because of stupid breast cancer is a serious bummer.

In fact, speaking of dinner, I am having a hard time lately getting enough calories. I have either cut back on or cut completely: cheese, red meat, butter, cream, sweets, eggs, avocados, wine and most carbs. I live on veggies, olive oil, sardines and a bit of chicken and I amgetting HUNGRY!

    OK, vent over ;)

  • specialk
    specialk Member Posts: 9,258

momine - I am with you on the hungry thing!  Actually it is not so much hungry as longing for certain foods.  I am doing a detox diet, trying to consume only organic/grass fed protein (beef/chicken/eggs) and veggies and one piece of high-fiber fruit a day, and have cut out pork, dairy, caffeine (my one remaining vice!), alcohol, grains, sugar, etc.  I have been doing it for 30 days and have lost 10 lbs., which was from chemo, steroids and excess fluid.  I feel better and really am not hungry as I can eat as much as I want - I just want some naughty foods!

specialK, good for you! At first I mostly felt great. But once I cut the meat and eggs way back, because I started femara and it can cause cholesterol problems, I am beginning to think that something's gotta give. I am VERY thin and really quite hungry a lot of the time. But I am not sure how one adds calories with most high-calorie foods being a no-no for one reason or another.

Joyce is the head administrator for an anesthesia group in a local hospital.  I am quite sure they are taking excellent care of her!!!

Momine - what's wrong with avocados?  Yes, they are fatty, but it's very much the good kind, like olive oil.  Your diet is rather austere...I couldn't, wouldn't want to do it.

  • Momine
    Momine Member Posts: 2,845

Avocados are supposedly not a good idea if you are ER+. A lot of nice foods are not, apparently, compatible with ER+ cancer. Add to that the cholesterol risk of the AIs and my desire to keep my blood sugar down and steady and there isn't much to eat.

I do let myself have a little wine, cheese etc, so it is not as austere as it mght sound, but i used to consume cheese and avocados almost daily. Now I might have a small amount of one or the other every other week or so.

Glad that joycek has the "friends and family" hookup at the hospital!  I always found that to be helpful too!  Most of my early appointments at BS/PS/MO I was in scrubs because I had come from work, and I found that I got a lot more technical info.  Also ended up in the ER with DD a couple of times straight from work - they looked at my badge and we never were in the waiting room for long!  Gotta love it!

momine - I already had the cholesterol issue prior to BC as a result of hyst/ooph, so I am on a statin to keep it down.  I was careful with fats before but I have now taken it to a new level - I am curious what my numbers are now with the combination of statin/AI/almost no fat in my diet.  Glad you are still occasionally enjoying some yummy and fun things.

    Momine Member Posts: 2,845

SpecialK, let us know how you do with the numbers, please. My numbers were fine before treatment, but I have had an ooph and have started AIs, so I am quite nervous about it. The idea of statins scares the living daylights out of me and I will go to fairly great lengths to avoid it. Have you had problems being on them?

hmmmm 6 avacadoes are almost at perfection at my place.  I could eat a couple tonite on the Jewish hotdogs but had a huge lunch with the DD,

Michelle, I took your suggestion and pigged out for dinner. I had two gyro sandwiches and it was GOOD! Thanks ;)

I'm ER+ and I eat all foods that I like in moderation and consume alcohol in moderation.  The only food I was instructed to avoid was soy.  My cholesterol has become elevated since I started taking arimidex so now I take a statin.   I need to lose about 15 lbs that I've gained over the three years on arimidex.  It's very hard to manage weight with no estrogen.

We're having another pleasant day in Clinton, IA.  DH and I played 9 holes of golf and walked instead of renting a cart.  Afterwards we had a good lunch in the restaurant at the golf club.  I had a delicious Cobb salad.  With avocado!  And blue cheese dressing.   IMHO, the Haas avocados are the best.  Subway has avocado as an option now.

Dinner will probably be a salad and fruit.  If we're hungry I have some home-made eggplant parmesan casseroles in the freezer.

Michelle- Thanks on the update on Joyce, I have been thinking about her and missing her here.  I hope all her tests turn out good.  Keep us posted.  I am glad you didn't break out the hose yesterday!!  Hope you spaghetti dinner turns out great and DH is happy once he gets it in his mouth ;P

Momine- Yay!!  I am glad you got a fattening meal into you.  It's good to be conscious of what we eat but it's also good not to be hungry.  I laughed at the gyros.  DH loves them, once I said ok, I have to see what the fuss is about and had a bite of one of his, they are really good!!

SpecialK- I hope you're doing ok down there, it looks like more rain is on the way for you.  I actually go tto watch the news at lunch time and they had a lot of footage on Florida, so scary.

So I stopped at the store and got myself the ground lamb for dinner tonight.  This is a meal I grew up on and I love it, because Mom made it :)  We haven't had it in at least a year because of the price of lamb.  I'll have it with my fried zucchini sticks and sauce and roasted red potatoes.  Mmmmmm.....can't wait.  I haven't said anything to DH about it and I know he will be pleasantly surprised.

Avocados- makes me want a sandwich I used to have years ago.  It was called a California grilled cheese at a restaurant I worked at.  Whole wheat bread, guacamole, tomato and Havarti cheese.  I think when our tomatoes com ein in August I will have to go for it.

momine - I had the hyst/ooph 11 years ago and did not start a statin (Lipitor) for quite a while, I have always eaten sensibly and maintained a healthy weight.  My cholesterol started to increase but my triglycerides remained in control and my ratio was OK.  When all that went south I did start the statin, it brought my numbers down by almost 100 points (I believe I have a genetic issue) from a total cholesterol of 260 with a bad ratio, and I have not had any side effects that I am aware of.  Next time I have a lipid panel I will check it against the previous one - I am curious also since I am eating such a limited diet right now.  I have always wodered if I could control it myself with diet and exercise, so I may try to come off the statin at some point.  Yay on the gyro sandwiches - love them.  I like to have horiatiki salad with the gyro meat and tzatziki - sooo good!

laurie - rainy and very windy today - my dog is still scared but was excited to go outside!  The grilled cheese with avocado sounds yummy!  I want one right now!

carole - I just made the switch from Femara to Arimidex (with a 3 week washout phase) and I am wondering if I will continue to lose.  I was making such good progress so I hope I can keep at it - but I did have to go back to the AI since I am very strongly ER+.  I have been on Arimidex for about a week - already the joint pain is coming but it is fairly mild so far - it is the reason I made the switch.  I am basically gluten-free right now which some have said is helpful.  We shall see!

apple - I always have too many avocados ripe at the same time - but my DD has discovered that she really, really likes my guacamole!

  • gardengumby
    gardengumby Member Posts: 4,860

Momine, where did you hear about avocados being not good for ER+???  Want to research it. :)  I was told by my MO that I can eat anything including soy in moderation - just not to take soy supplements.  It's all so confusing.

For dinner tonight, I think we're going out for Chinese, as my DH is out fishing and I'm getting off work late...  :(

Apple... you really do need to write your memoirs... OMG!

Michelle... I do not know JoyceK - but my thoughts her with her and her family.   That is some avocado.  I really love avocados.... And everything in moderation eh?

Carberry - have fun at the casino and concert.

SpecialK... so sad about the manatees - what an incredible creature.   Happy you are all safe and sound.

Glad to hear you are having a blast Carole - and the Cobb Salad sounds so yummy.

Gardengumby.... I love Chinese food... its what we normally have the Saturday evening after my chemo - just love all the different flavours.

Again, dinner will be what DH wants to cook/bring out the freezer.

Hello and hugs to everyone I missed.
