SpecialK... and then there was bacon Smile I hear you.  My sister is a vegan - has been for about 30 years and she says that the only 'meat' smell which still gets her buds wanting is that smell of bacon.  I'll let you know how the salad goes.

0k, I have a minute and had to pop in....

Michelle- Have fun tonight!  Such a happy post:)  Good stuff all around!!  I laughed at the hot dogs!  I was a vegetarian for years, DH brought me to Fenway and made me try a hot dog.  I couldn't believe I would agree to a bite....then I ate two :)

Special K I agree- great potato salad recipes.  I am not a huge fan of potato salad but I think I will give yours a try too!  Thanks for sharing.

Magic Mike- OMG, the last movie I saw in a theater was Saving Private Ryan ?? (I think?)  And when I saw the movie trailer I told DH I AM going to go see that on the big screen!!  He laughed and told me to knock my socks off.  Too many good looking men to not go check that out!!

Laurie... I am glad I am not the only one who when has a minute checks the boards out Smile

And tell your DH... they can knock off whatever they want - worry about socks !!

SpecialK - yes, I think it's the same Fresh Market chain.  This is the first one in New England...hard to believe it's only 25 minutes away and I happen to go by it every time I visit my mom.  It just opened today and all I can say is "wow"!

  • specialk
    specialk Member Posts: 9,258

luvrving - you are so going to enjoy going there!  They have a great zucchini nut bread that is sometimes 2 for 1.  One year for DH's b-day I got everyone an individual serving of their fave dessert, the bakery is awesome.  They have very good prepared salads and roasted chicken breasts too.

Too bad we can't all get together for a girl's night out and see Magic Mike together!

    LuvRVing Member Posts: 2,409

Specialk - yes, that roasted chicken was fabulous!  And I saw the bakery display case...OMG!!!  I did cave and buy some "kitchen sink" cookies.  They had tiny ones out as samples and well, I have to admit they were irresistable.  I aslo bought a small container of their roasted chicken salad.  I'm guessing that's how they consume any leftover rotisserie chickens, and someone at the deli counter said it was delicious.  I'll have to be on the watch for the zucchini nut bread, that sounds yummy!  They were giving out samples of their medium roast coffee...I'm trying that tomorrow morning.  It would take a mighty fine brew to unseat my DunkinDonuts but I'm willing to give it a try, especially when it's free.

Hmmm...might be time for "girls night out" with my daughters!  Magic Mike, here we come!

Wow, so happy for you, Michelle, with your serendipitous day. Hope you can get the same phlebotomist on your next trip. I'm envious about the Fresh Market option you discovered. It sounds great! Definitely a good day.....and I hope your cookout is a lot of fun tomorrow!

SpecialK, thanks for the potato salad recipes....they sound like great crowd pleasers, which is when I'd make it, especially now that we have the holiday coming up.

Saw my wonderful opthomalogist (sp?) this AM to figure out why my new sunglass lenses are really hard to see with (!!). I last saw her in the middle of

rads, and I think my eyes were acting up a bit, and it turns out my prescription has changed in both eyes since then, one up one down, thus the lousy vision in the new lenses. So, now I get to pay again for another set of lenses....fingers crossed that this adjustment works. I'll be at the beach for a week in a few weeks and really need those dark lenses.

My eye doc sells Revitalash from her office and last Xmas I asked DH when he had his eye appt to buy it for one of my gifts. He did and I started using it in January and my eyelashes, which had been pathetic 6 months ago are now long and thick. I'm starting to notice all the women I see who are obviously doing the same thing....including all of the young women in my doc's office! I realized recently that even tho I feel exhausted all the time, my "lovely lashes" have me looking a lot better than I feel. I'll be happy when I feel like my eyes look! I learned today that the formula was developed after it was discovered that a glaucoma med promoted eyelash growth, so they extracted the element that was resulting in the growth and created this product. Fascinating!

Tonight I made a warm broccoli rabe/orzo salad with feta, mushrooms, onion and garlic, lemon and red pepper flakes. It definitely eclipsed the leftover steak tips we had with it, along with carrots sprinkled with tarragon. I was too tired to make a salad after the orzo/rabe prep so we did without....but my eyes sparkled throughout the meal. ;)

Here is a great recipe i made for dinner tonight it is really good, and loved the sauce served it over mashed potatoes and side of broccoli spears.

    • 5-6 pork chops- bone-in or boneless, your choice- (I used boneless)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1 bottle of beer (The darker beer the better.  I use New Belguim 1554. I would not recommend going as dark as a Guinness though.)
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/3 cup ketchup (I know, I know....but TRUST ME!)

Put a little bit of extra virgin olive oil in the bottom of a skillet. Season the chops with salt and pepper and brown both sides. While pork chops are browning, combine beer, ketchup, and brown sugar in a bowl. Pour sauce mixture over the pork chops and simmer for 40-45 minutes. (Uncovered) Remove pork chops and thicken the sauce a bit. In a small cup, combine 1 TBSP of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of water. Stir to combine and add to boiling sauce, whisk so no lumps form. Put pork chops back in the thickened sauce, flip to coat. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.

Today for lunch i had a red pepper bisque soup at a new deli that just opened it was so delicious im going back to see if i can get the recipe from them.

I know I read you post SpecialK's because I made the baked potato salad tonight - which was delicious BTW - sad we had conversations afterwards  and as I read down just now in that post, I  have no recollection whatsoever of your dinner you mentioned for your DH???

Debbie if I say so myself, my dinner was really yum.  You have to try Special's baked pot salad.  Your pork chop sauce sounds worthy of a try too.

Lacey - thanks for mentioning Revitalash... I know I have justfinished chemo but wish my lashes were growing like my hair.  I have one Frown I will look out for that.

    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

Debbie- got to ask- whats the sauce taste like?

I am grocery shopping tomorrow...may add it to the list:)

So tonight we get the kids down for bed.  Dh and I are on the couch he with the tv,me with my book and we hear a splash....?  We both looked at each other like WTH?  The pool alarm goes off and we run out to see the cat swimming, trying to save its self in the pool!  OMG!  What cat falls in a pool??  Thekittie was fine and we were left shaking our heads.  Dumb cat.

Tazzy, the info that comes with the Revitalash says that a doc created the formula for his wife who had just undergone chemo and lost her eyelashes. I would check out amazon.com before racing to the eye doctor for it since I think it is a better price there. I just like that it is approved by my eye doc who also uses it....she had cancer treatment two years ago....that's maybe how she got onto this. Good luck!

Laurie, I thought for sure you were going to discover a moose.....

and end up on Ch. 9! LOL

Glad the cat is fine....sort of. :)

Specialk- Some how i missed your potato salad recipe until Tazzy brought it too my attention sounds good. I do make one similar to that and will copy paste yours.

Laurie- Its hard to describe but i would say somewhere between a hoisen sweet sauce and a barbque sauce even kind of close to the chicken one we both like. Once you cook it and thicken it, it really has a great flavor if you wanted it a little less sweet just add less b.sugar.

Lacey- That eyelash stuff sounds great, i was afraid to use the other one (caant remember the name) heard it changed your eye color and could cause problems with the sight so i will check into this one.

Oh and Laurie-  That is too funny about the cat guess she wanted a midnight swim lol!

oh the  drama at my house. My daughter went nuts when she found out that i killed a hornworm by cutting in it half.. at 12, she actually cried. She went out and found 5 more, and made them a little home in a basket with salad greens covered with saran wrap with holes.  She played with them all afternoon.  Surprised

She saved them for my four neices and nephews who were coming to dinner. They wanted to play with them, so i made them put on inspector gloves.

My son #1 went and dumped them at the top of the field after dinner.  (way to be a good citizen mr. eagle scout.)

Thank you Eric,  - I'm off to find some this morning.  i only have 2 tomato plants but they were doing so well.

We found at least 6 of the buggers.. shudder.

sooo i think i need to spray.. i didn't find any of those creatures this morning. yet.

We have a Fresh Market in our little town here in NC.  I've been there a couple of times, but haven't been this year.  It's so expensive...I feel like I need to take a loan from the  bank when I shop there.  Now that I'm trying to go all organic, it seems to be the only place nearby other than the local farmer's market that carries mostly organic.  I guess it's the price we pay for good health.

I'm going to order some of that eyelash stuff.  Mine are sparse at best and no amount of volume mascara works.  My eyebrows are thin too but at least I can fill those in with pencil.

All the new recipes sound great!  I'm not very creative these days...wish I had more to share.

Apple:  You DD is sensitive just like mine, who wouldn't even kill a cockroach if she could capture it and take it outside...ugh!  When her DS, my DGS was small I showed him a cute little bug on the sidewalk one day, thinking he would be like DD and want to capture it and play with it...well, quick as a wink, he stepped on it and smashed it!  Must take after his dad who hates bugs.

Tonight we're going to see another play at our local theater...it's about golf...oh joy!  Really, it's supposed to be very funny...I'll let you know.

Kaara, I think I read something yesterday at the eye doc's that revitalash works for eyebrows too. I've never tried that since I am well endowed there. You can probably google it and find out. I do get a kick out of my lively eyelashes. I'm sure you will enjoy

yours...not sure why I didn't know that our eyelashes fall out as we get older, even without harsh medical treatments.

Apple, I feel your parental pain about being a hornworm killer....recently, I was unable to console a third grade boy who is a new staunch advocate of Mother Earth and all things living. He had gone on a field trip to the Arboretum and the guide took apart a leaf to show the biology of it. Oy! He felt like he witnessed an execution, and was so distressed.

Eagle scout was a good brother!

Morning everyone,  Concert was a blast last night, DH didnt really get us girls all to himself as we ran into many friends.  Trying to fix single girlfriend up with a date...she met two diff guys but didnt get any requests for phone num exchanges...all fun.

Specialk I have done that potato salad for few years now and it is everyones favorite, traditional pot salad is not really liked in our household.

Laurie Funny about that cat.  Our cat used to perch on the edge of the pool to drink and I was always afraid it would fall in.

Yesterday we found out that my sister (3years older than me) has breast cancer, sm, encapsulated.  She will start calling docs to day to find out plan of action.  Sad day for us all, it breaks my moms heart to see her girls go through this.

My girlfriends are doing a girls night tomorrow to see Magic Mike, but I cannot go  Will have to catch it another time

    specialk Member Posts: 9,258

tazzy - DH's dinner was a cheesesteak sandwich and sweet potato fries.  You are funny!

laurie - glad your cat is OK!  Ours had never seen a pool before moving to florida - it was terrified at first but then came to view it as a giant water bowl.  We have a spa that is part of the pool and he would actually get in the spa with us - crazy cat!  My DD got a dog right after HS graduation and when he was a puppy he would see the cat drinking the pool water and sneak up and nudge him on the bottom and the cat would almost go in.  Crazy dog.

debbie - the pork chps sound yummy!  For some reason I seem to have the least imagination when it comes to pork chops so I am using that recipe!

My DD is a lover of plants and animals too, except for spiders or cockroaches, that is where she draws the line!  When she was the age of apple's DD she would take leaves and put caterpillers on them and float them in the creek - kept her busy for hours.  We have spent many hours caring for abandoned and injured animals - once had a newborn rabbit that the neighbor's cat brought home.  I was bottle feeding it rabbit formula throughout the night - I must be crazy!  The wildlife rehab people in Virginia knew us - we rescued an injured bat which got loose in the car on the way to the rehab lady!  We had numerous birds that we took in, and DH found a newborn squirrel that had fallen out of the nest on his way home from work, her eyes were still closed but man she could squeak!

carberry - so sorry about your sister's dx, so devastating.  I am sure you will be very helpful to her though.  I can't imagine how your mother feels, it is so hard to see this happen to your children.  It was hard to tell my FIL/MIL - I am glad I didn't have to tell my parents.

Funny cat stories!  They are such independent creatures...I love them!  When we first moved to Fl ours ran through the patio doors and right into the pool, jumped about three feet into the air back onto the pool deck, and away he ran...didn't see him for an entire day.  It was like an America's Funniest Video's segment!  He never did that again.  Also, if we ever wanted him to come to us and he was hiding, we would just run the electric can opener...he thought it was time to eat;)  I loved that cat, but my ex got custody of him when we split because I was moving to an apartment that didn't accept pets.

Carrie:  That would be so much fun...a girls night out for Magic Mike....wish I was in Florida...my DD might do that with me.  I'm going to try and drag my BF...it's my turn to choose the movie...hehehe!  He liked Think Like A Man, so he will probably like this one too.  There's another movie that I wanted to see that was on at our local art flim theater...Hysteria...about the doctor who invented the vibrator.  It's supposed to be hilarious, but I think I'm going to have to wait and see that one on netflix.

    Have a great day everyone!

Funny story about the cat Laurie - what a shock for the poor thing.

I am nowhere near as compassionate when it comes to insects and all things like that... especially when they eat my plants in the garden that cost a lot of money and time.

    SpecialK, here's a link to a ‘pork' website http://www.passionforpork.com/

Kaara - enjoy the show tonight.

Oh! carberry my thoughts are with your sister and your family.

Michelle- Hope you are having a great day with all your friends.

    Funny story on the cats!!

Here is how i make my all time favoite pork chops, they are so tender and full of flavor lightly dust them with flour, dip in egg wash then into some italian seasoned bread crumbs that i mix with parmesan cheese, garlic powder, s&p and paprika. cook in some evoo about 5 minutes on each side jsut to brown then put in a 325% oven for 25-30 minutes. I might make them like this next time and make the other sauce i posted above and pour over these chops.

tomorrow my girl friend, Janeen Sanders who is a singer and lives from my home town is going to be a back up singer for a elvis impersonater at the casino tomorrow and saturday she is staying with us friday and saturday. We have plans friday for a friends bd party but will get to watch her sing saturday. She is fabulous shes not well known or anything but does travel and sing a lot of places.  Today i have a lot of cleaning to do since i was told last minute she was coming. Surprised!

Carrie- I am so sorry about your sister.  This most be so frightening for you and your family.

Debbie- Have fin with your friend coming up!  The pork chops sound good, wish I would have bought some at the store today :/

Michelle- Hope you guys have a great time.  What was the campground you mentioned right outside Keene?  I can't find the paper where I had written down the tow you recommended.  We are looking for our next camping adventure:)

Kaara- Funny cat story!  I honestly couldn't believe it when we heard the splash...dumb cat.  Have fun tonight!

Dinner tonight is steak on the grill, corn on the cob, baked potatoes and steamers for an appetizer.  I got a lot done today.  Went grocery shopping, cleaned out the garage and organized it, mowed the front lawn and went for a swim with the kids.  Dh is going to be psyched when he gets home and sees it:)  I just wanted to lighten the load for weekend chores so we can relax as a family a bit more.

Tomorrow I am meeting a friend for lunch at my favorite Mexican place.  She is my dearest friend, the one that moved to St John.  She is back in town for follow up dental work and will be flying out the following day.  I am so excited to spend some time with her.  I don't think I will be doing anything tomorrow afternoon with a full belly and a Margarita :)

Carrie, I'm also so sorry to learn about your sister. Yes, how painful for your parents to have to hear about her Dx. She is fortunate, tho, to have your knowledge on her side.

I am finally physically OUT of my office. Phew! Very appreciative of the four early adolescent boys (my friend's grandson and co.)who lugged many boxes of books down flights of stairs to my car. Nothing like the energy of those little testosterone emerging guys!

Of course DH is going to die when he sees the pile of heavy boxes to be brought into the house. Yikes! I think I'd better find a spot for them and maybe get the young boys over here! ;)

Wow!  We had THE most fantastic evening with JoyceK and her DH, and our friends from Milton.  The weather was spectacular, we went on a pontoon boat ride, and while we were eating dinner, two hot air balloons came down the lake, just as I had arranged Wink   JoyceK is looking pale and feeling OK but tired.  She has a doctor appointment early tomorrow morning.

Carrie - so very sorry about your sister.  But she has you as her mentor, so she'll be in good hands.

Lacey - congrats on finishing the "move out."  Finishing is never as much fun as starting!

Laurie - that's Greenfield State Park on Otter Lake.  It used to be very, very nice!  Enjoy your Mexican fiesta tomorrow!

debbie... have fun with your friend - sounds like you will have a blast.    Yes, please share the brandy chicken recipe.

laurie.. you too - enjoy the margarita's - the best summer drink.  And how would you, with 2 young sons, ever have a perfect house - I dont manage that and there's only me and DH Laughing

I am being lazy today - felt very fatigued - so am doing stuffed peppers - mixture already made up and was in the freezer - just need to do the peppers, sweet corn and a green salad.

Looks like we are about to get a storm too.

Congrats of being out of your office Lacey - that was a lot of work !
