So...whats for dinner?

Awww crap, Debbie! Nobody wants to get that news and you are most likely feeling a similar sense of fear to what your Dad felt when his 'baby' went through it.... Yet, you are here and doing well! No reason to think he won't do the same!
A neighbor of mine had esophageal cancer in his late 30's... Went though treatment 10 years ago and, while not easy, he is alive and well today!
The stats are just a best guess.... We are stronger than we know and definitely, those around us are stronger than we give them credit for sometimes! I know that I find it to be less unsettling to be the patient rather than the care taker and that probably boils down to a sense of feeling in control.... i'm working on that!
Keeping both you and your Dad in my thoughts and prayers!0 -
Went to Applebees with a friend. I had their garlic steak, with a spinach stuffed portabella, and a couple potato pieces. Steak was a bit salty for my taste, but otherwise good. It was a weight watchers dinner so I was good. But do I have to admit to the Brownie Bite? It was a buck, and real little..... LOL

Debbie- I am so sorry about your Dad. I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now. I will send you tons of prayers, love and strength your way.
Chabba- Same goes for you as Debbie. I hope your brother finds some answers or relief at the hospital. I am so sorry that he is going through this. Love, strength and prayers coming for you and your family as well.
Carrie- So jealous of your boating adventures! Have a blast on your trek to the Italian festival!
Carol- Same goes for you! Your camping adventure sounds wonderful, I hope one day to do something similar with my DH. Your energy is astounding with the miles you log on your bikes, never ride too much to be too tired to raise a glass
Michelle- So glad your DH is getting psyched to get in better shape, I know you have been wanting him too. I hope your new bike seat came in so your bum is comfy:) Don't over so yourself! It sounds like you are having a great time though which is wonderful.
Bedo- Arrr me hearty! I hope you had a great day filled with grog drinking and you weren't bothered by any scally wags!!
I know I am missing a lot of you- sorry!! But hugs to everyone!
Spent the day getting ready to head camping. I have most everything done and we leave tomorrow at lunch time and come back Sunday. Dh is on vacation this week so we can get an extra day in. Tonight he went to the Red Sox game with friends, left at 3 and won't be home until very late. I told him in exchange he owes me 2 hours of quiet reading time in the afternoon while we are camping I swear I entered some sort of marathon? But I will rest when it snows:)
Dinner tonight was whatever anyone wanted. I made cheeseburgers for one son and I- the other wanted a breakfast sandwich. Ok, whatever. Dad's not home so it was a free for all. Menu for the three nights is laid out, seafood one night, then chicken and then steak. We are sticking close to home so only driving about 40 minutes which will make Sunday easy and relaxing to get ready for work Monday.
Much love to all of you and I hope everyone is well.

OMG- how could I forget- Good Luck Tazzy!!!! It will go great and we are all here for you. If it makes you feel any better I was surprised how easy my BMX was. You will do great, hugs to you.

Oh dear, my heart goes out to both of you, Debbie and Chabba. I worked with a lady who had esophageal cancer back in the days when only about 20% survived and she was one of them. I'm sending positive thoughts for good outcomes.
Busy day here - grandkids were here all afternoon then they all stayed for dinner. DD had promised them tacos so she ran to the store and got the fixings. I went on a 5 mile bike ride this morning, then had the kids by myself for most of the afternoon. I'm a bit pooped!
Lacey - that reaction sounds scarey. And I'm betting the ER will not be able to find a likely cause. I hope everything turns out OK!

Chabba,
Sending up prayers tonight for your brother AND for you.... Seems like the rads may have had helped (which is good).... Hoping that that chemo totally knocks it back and that his side effects lessen!! Sometimes being in the hospital can help in that they can get the nutrients in him that he made need without his body having to do the work...
Prayers and hugs coming your way.....0 -
Debbie and Chabba, adding my prayers to the chain.
Pirate talk, good memories of our Disney cruises. It's been a while.
I had a toxic reaction last night. Very familiar to me since I have chemical sensitivities. Now I have to figure out the cause, I recently increased my Metformin dose but also added an herb based liver supplement. Took nothing today.
Dinner was pork chops from our grass fed beef source, cooked with mango and peach sauce, artichokes on the side. Was good but not as amazing as it sounds. The best thing was the Napa Savignon Blanc!
Someone asked about the crispy salmon. Go to You Tube and search for "Gordon Ramsey crispy salmon". Easy and so good!0 -
Thank you all for your prayers.

Debbie and Chabba, I too am adding my prayers to the chain.
And thoughts for quick healing to you Tazz.
Dinner tonight was quinoa, chicken and salsa...quick, easy and tasty.

Debbie and Chabba {{{{HUGS and Prayers}}}} Oh how this disease sucks. Just saw on news that the Golisano childrens Hospital in the city close to us (they mostly treat children with cancer) is opeining an independent cancer building to just focus on cancer patients. So sad that cancer has become such big business.
Lacey Not sure of the connection with benadryl and tamox. I take benadryl for sleep, and my onc could not come up with a reason not to. i also checked with the pharmacist and he couldnt give me a reason either. If you google it, it just says they are contraindicated, but no explanation as to why. I still take it. Wonder if you reacted to something they sprayed on the beets. I once reacted like that to strawberries, and I am not allergic to them, figured it was a pesticide of some sort.
Rick Springfield concert was surprisingly good last night. He still looks awesome at 62...great muscles!!
Laurie My DH always says "we will sleep when were dead" LOL

"we will sleep when were dead"
I'm going to use that line on my DH the next time he complains about my early wake-ups!!!
0 -
Sleeping when we're dead is a given I think;) We're headed to a play tonight "Guys and Dolls" so I am going to take a short catnap so that I don't fall asleep later.
I fixed a nice lunch for us today...butternut squash soup made with carrots, squash, onions, celery, 1 apple, chicken broth, a little seasoning, nutmeg, and when tender, blend in the vita mix. I served it with spring greens with walnuts and grapes, goat cheese and a sweet dressing. Light and filling.

Debbie & Chabba: Adding my prayers for your Dad & brother. Tazzy: Hope your surgery went well. Hi to everyone else. Sending a group hug since working every day has really curtailed my on line activities.
I took off today to take a neighbor lady to lunch for her B-Day. She was born in 1928. There were 10 of us and we'd agreed in advance to go "dutch treat". Prime rib, fried shrimp, chicken fried steak, grilled salmon, baby back ribs - everyone had a great meal & a good time. I won't need any dinner tonight. Going to play Chickenfoot later this afternoon. The hostess has made a Hummingbird Cake. I seem to be the only one who hasn't tried it, but everyone is raving.

A hummingbird cake?? Please share more.....
Tho I won't be trying many " new" foods until I find out what got that terrible systemic reaction going yesterday. Today my throat still feels a bit odd, and I am nervous that I could break out at anytime...so staying with safe foods...tho I'm strongly suspecting now that the trigger was the beeswax lip gloss that someone made for me....just can't tolerate thinking that it is one of my newer healthy foods. Took two benedryl last night before bed, but am trying not to take any more today. The ER doc looked up the benedryl/Tamox issue and said the benedryl renders the tamox ineffective (not sure to what degre and didn't really understand the scientific explanation), so my primary wants me to see an allergist nowto deal with this latest issue....just what I want ....yet another doc on my dance card!! I had allergy shots forever as a child and I do believe they really nelped me live a pretty symptom- free adult life.
I bet it is possible that a small amount of benedryl to help sleep might be fine, but I would have my doc google it (after you do, Carrie).
Off to Home Depot since it seems to have the best selection of late season plants so I can drag them to NH and finish my planting this weekend before the frost comes!!0 -
Frost??? Bite your tongue!!!
0 -
Frost? Maybe in my freezer. It's still in the 100F to 110F degree range here.

debbie - The tomato pie was a hit at lunch today. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us.
Served french onion soup, tomato pie, ham and swiss quiche and quiche Loraine, salad and watermelon.
Today was one of my really bad days, to stressed and tired to do much of anything but sit on a stool and tell my helpers what to do. Since all the recips's but debbie's are in my head I still felt like I were cooking.
Came here as soon as I got home to say thanks, now it is definitely time for a nap.

sorry I haven't been on much lately - I've been unbelievably over worked.
Thinking of you, Chabba!!
The zucchini are coming in... lots of 'em so last night we had zucchini with onions, mushrooms a can of tomatoes and a lot of spices. I used to make that years ago, but hubby never really liked it. I cannot stand eating something the same way every blessed day, though, so he's got to put up with zucchini "stew" once in awhile. He's the one who planted 10 zucchini plants, after all.....

Variety is the spice of life, Gardengumby!
Chabba - sorry you are so stressed. I have to say I would have loved to be eating that lunch you prepared today. I love french onion soup, quiche, and watermelon. It's the perfect trifecta!!!
Tonight, after an almost 7 mile bike ride that seriously kicked my butt, I made my version of chicken carciofi (chicken with artichokes). Really good! Instead of serving with a side of pasta, I threw in a can of cannelini beans. DH loves it, and I think it's almost as good as the restaurant version that I copycatted. After the kitchen cleanup (which will be a joint effort ) I am sitting in my recliner and watching the Olympics and surfing the net.
Oh, this is pretty cool...yesterday I got an email from the science editor for Diabetes Forecast, a monthly magazine of the American Diabetes Association, and she wanted to know if she could call me and talk to me about diabetes and cancer. Of course, I said yes because that's how I roll! She said she had found me and my blog with a Google search. That made me look at the statistics for my blog - over 27,000 hits from 10 different countries!!! She called me this afternoon and we talked for about 50 minutes. She'll be publishing her article in the October edition (breast cancer month, of course!) and she'll send me a copy of the magazine and a link to the article, which I'll share when I receive it. I'm feeling a little popular today!!! And those of you who blog, you never know who you are helping!
Laurie - I hope you have a great camping weekend and the t-storms miss you! It has been looking threatening here, but the storms have passed us by, so far.
0 -
Michelle, how very cool (not the frost variety;) that your blog has been so widely read....ten countries! Wow....Excellent! You should feel popular...Congratulations!
Made lamb burgers for dinner, with cuke salad and local corn. I did not at all feel like making dinner tonight, but DH spent the day on the train to and from Stamford CT so figured I'd be a good wife and present him with a bit of food at the end of his long commute. I couldn't resist calling him "Don" (as in Draper) when he came through the door in his suit...a rare sight in this culture of business casual.
Chabba, what a wonderful lunch. Hope you regain your energy soon. Be good to yourself...you take such good care of others.0 -
Thank-you everyone for all the well wishes and prayers I could feel them!
Tazzy- Hope you are doing ok!
Minustwo- Lunch sounded amazing!
Lacey- How scarey, hope you find out soon what is causing that!
Michelle- Dinner sounds good. How cool is that, that you are being published. Cant wait to read it when it comes out.
Chabba- So glad you liked the pie. How is your brother doing since he had to go back in the hospital? He has been on my mind. I understand your stress. My dad is trying to be positive for us kids, I have not been able to talk to him, every time I pick up the phone I bawl and don't want him to hear the fear in my voice. I have been talking to his wife a few times a day also my brother. Just told my sister today she is going to fly here from Hawaii. Things are looking bleak but there is still hope, and also for your brother. ((((hugs))))

Thanks debbie. DB is still in hospital and will be at least another day. Tomorrow another specialist and more tests to try and determine just what is going on and how to treat it.
Like you I don't want to call cause I know I'll cry. They seem to be avoiding it too. For over a week now all communication has been by text. (((HUGS))) and prayers.

Debbie and Chabba, ((((((hugs)))))) Michelle, that is awesome, I know you helped me when my sugars were a concern during tx, so I am surevyou will now be able to help so many more! Congrats. to everyone, much love.

Hugs and good thoughts to Debbie and Chabba and your families.
Tazzy, I hope you are doing well. I think you will be like Sharon..3 days after her BMX, she convinced me to take her to a spring training baseball game...she had a great time.
Michelle, that's neat that your blog provider can tell you that kind of information. It's a good feeling to be able to help others.
Gardengumby. 10 zucchini plants!?! My guess you being unbelievably worked has something to do with picking and cooking zucchini! :-) Wow..
Lacey.. hopefully it is the gloss and not some good tasting food. I almost believe the doctors ask about our favorite foods so they can make us sacrifice something we really like.
Sharon cooked tonight. A jambalaya..not a recipe but instead a "use what we have on hand and guess at the amounts" experiment; which to me is the fun way to cook. I and Chrissy had second and third helpings...it was good!

Quick drop in to say hi and I'm home. Really wasn't as bad as anticipated - except the SNB which hurt like a real bitch for seconds x 3.
Thanks goodness for pain meds. But really its a step closer to being cancer free.
Hope you are all doing OK - thoughts and hugs to those going through stress at this time.
I will catch up soon... for now, night, night (even though its only 2.30pm here)
0 -
Night Night, Tazzy, sleep tight. It will do you good. I'm glad things went OK.

Tazzy, the SNB was the most painful experience of my whole BMX/Recon experience. It hurt like H*** and nobody prepared me for that kind of intense pain. A very kind assistant stood beside me and held my hand, telling me to squeeze hard. The needles are large and dull.
Debbie and Chabba, my thoughts go out to you. It's awful to have loved ones seriously ill.
That tomato pie sounds heavenly! Too bad that I don't have baking capability at the time the tomatoes are plentiful and good.
We're having walleye fillets for dinner! I found the fresh Canadian walleye at a supermarket in Park Rapids. US walleye cannot be sold commercially. Normally I don't fry fish but I plan to bread and fry these fillets outside. Our side will be potato salad. I've already boiled eggs on the outside electric burner and am in the process of cooking the potatoes.
Meanwhile, dh is making martinis! Happy Friday!

Tazzy, glad that's over with! Do you mean the sentinel node biopsy itself, or the shots before surgery? If the shots, why no numbing spray?
Easy dinner tonight. Mahi mahi marinated in a ginger tamari sauce, roasted asparagus.
It's looking like I'm going to be on vacation for most of October! Almost two weeks in Napa/Sonoma mid month (driving), then WDW with our daughter. Southwest had an amazing fare sale today and I couldn't resist. No idea how we will pay for all of this, but life is short and precious.
And it looks like we may have a good offer on our commercial building, a small office/warehouse DH used for his business that went under in December. It's paid off, so we feel kind of rich. lol

Tazzy: Good that you have it behind you..now focus on healing.
I made mahi mahi for dinner tonight too with lemon butter sauce, artichokes and capers. With it I served brown rice and peas and coleslaw with a sweet blue cheese dressing.
I don't remember my SNB hurting, but I was out because they did it at the same time they did the lumpectomy.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
