LuvRVing,
My sister and I were having a discussion just this past week about our children and how, for lack of a better word, protected, they are! I was talking about what I was allowed to do at different ages and it was SO much more than I allowed my children to do...
A little ways into the conversation we both said, "Did NO ONE care about what we were doing?" LOL I think back then things were just different, simpler and more innocent than they are today!
treesprite,
LOL on the Cup of coffee vs a Kamikazee!! Two really different things!
If I can get my butt out of bed, I do intend to watch the Royal Wedding! I am such a sucker for these things I watched when Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married and also, sadly, the funeral of Princess Diana!
ducky,
I haven't been following too much of the coverage of the Royal Wedding in the news so am not burnt out on it!
I WILL give you an AMEN to NO more news about Charlie Sheen and/or Lindsey Lohan !!!
I can go back memory-wise to 35 cents per gallon on gas in my youth but, I will say this, as recently as 1997 when my husband bought a Ford Expedition, gas was 99 cents a gallon!!! We have since sold that gas hog but, OH MY, what have gas prices done??? We are over $4.00 now here!! Yikes!
LOL CaroleHalston,
When we have a family get together for the holidays, we all look at whatever roast/bird we are having and say the same thing... WOW, How in the heck are we going to eat all of THAT??
But, without fail, when dinner is over, all that is left is a bone/carcass and we are all saying, I can't believe we ate all that???!
The chopped salad sounds good and I'm thinking once we get our refrigerators cleared of left-overs we will be a bit healthier!!
Laurie,
I still have the ham I bought in the fridge!! It's good till June something so I have lots of time to figure out what to do with it! It was just such a good deal that I couldn't pass on it!
Lynn18,
Welcome!!!
Debbie,
That's the really GREAT thing about food... Sometime it's NOT about the food itself but more about the feelings and memories the dish evokes! Love all of the stories too!!!

Seaside Memories...................Honestly, I don't follow it either, I think the damn crap is following me................Its really beginning to get on my nerves..........My daughter's said "well Mom then shut it off."............Well, you can't for heavens sake, Its on every channel, so I turned off the TV and put on the radio........................problem solved.

I've been keeping the TV off and I listen to NPR when I have the radio on, so I'm looking forward to the wedding; I just have to figure out how not to watch them rehash the same thing over and over. I'm thinking DVR and fast forward to the good parts!
Ham once a year on Easter is good for me.
BLT for lunch (leftover bacon and tomato) and I'm thinking a version of Carolehalston's chop salad for dinner; I love cauliflower! Time to get out the food processor, my arm & shoulder get too sore these days long bouts of hand chopping.
Another memory: I remember when our city got its first pizza restaurant, Shakey's; it was love at first bite (I was in elementary school). I also remember when we got our first McDonalds. I was in junior high and my best friend and I would rob my parent's penny jug; I think it took 42 cents to buy a hamburger and fries, paid for all in pennies.0 -
Michelle- My mom used to pull up front at the movie theatre and drop us kids off with enough moneyto buy us a soda and popcorn, I had my first kiss there his name was brian- funny how i rmember his name after all these years i think i was only 10 but i was in love!!!
Laurie, your dinner sounds yummy, how did your ham dinner turn out tonight?
Seaside- Me too, im so burned on all the coverage and the reruns of it all, I will always remember thae day Princess Diania passed away- I was glued to the tv for weeks watching everything about her. Have you cooked your ham yet or is it cooked and you dont know what to do with the leftovers? I have an EXCELLENT ham glaze- I was going to do a bourbon glaze but realized some of my guest dont drink and may not appreciate that so i found another one and it is by far the best glaze i have ever had, every oen agreed! Just let me know.
treesprite- haha! I remember when mcdonalds first opened to, my parents were vegetarians so my brother and I both snuck down to mcdonalds and had a hamburger every chance we got, my 2younger sisters didnt eat meat so they told on us, we all laugh about it now!

Debbie- the ham turned out great! It hit the spot after craving it for a week. Plus we have enough left overs that we can have another dinner out of it plus frezzing the extras.
Tonight my husband has to work late so the kids will be picking dinner. I'll keep you posted on what a three year old thinks is a good idea for dinner, lol!

So my husbands meeting was cancelled he came home late so the kids are eating Annies mac n cheese (bunnies). Once they go to bed we will have grilled balsamic chicken with fresh mozzarella and rice with salad. Maybe we'll even be bad and eat while we watch Idol!!0
-
Debbie,
My ham is still in the fridge awaiting it's cook date! Did I miss the Bourbon glaze recipe? Would really like that one!!!
Laurie,
Will most likely be joining in the Idol watching!!!
Last night some of the ladies on the Idol thread were checking out the new show "The Voice". My husband was watching hockey so I thought.. OK, I'll check it out. Well... We had such incredible thunderstorms here last night that, as it turned out, no one was watching anything for more than a few minutes!!
Was OK for me missing a show I had never seen but, for my husband who was trying to watch Game 7 of the hockey Stanley Cup Playoffs... Yikes! Let's just say there was a bit of "language" used in my house!
I'm sure, if you look really carefully to the south, you may still see the cloud from all that swearing hanging over my house...LOL

I like "the Voice', I only caught some of the performers but they are running the show again tonight so i'll record it to watch later. I really liked the interaction with the 'judges' as they all competed for the various artists to be on their team

O2B,
It did seem like the people who got to actually see the show for more than 3 minutes at a time seemded to like it! I have added it to my list of things to check out!
Ok Ladies....
Holidays are over AND for the last 2 days I have been going from store to store trying to find a dress to wear to a wedding in 2 weeks that doesn't look absolutely hideous on me! I was about in tears today! I'm going to blame it on the mirrors for now!
I went from trying on dresses prior to my diagnosis 2 years ago for an annual function that my husband has at his work and thinking "Wow, I look smokin' hot" to my excursion over the last couple of days where my criteria is "Well, this doesn't look totally bad" .
Time for me to get serious about this weight gain!! Tomorrow starts healthy eating (with maybe just a small foray here and then to the dark side!)

Today is my birthday, DH and DS took me to a Japanese Steakhouse for dinner. It was nice and fun. I have a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory pecan caramel apple waiting for my appetite to return after the big dinner. That's my birthday "cake" and I won't be denied.
Seaside - I hear you about clothes shopping. I'm sure you look way better than you're giving yourself credit - we are, after all, our own worst critics . We are going out Saturday night with a bunch of friends to celebrate my birthday, and I'd like to try and wear a dress. But if the drain is not gone and with a 10-year-old girlie chest, I'm wondering what my choices will be. I won't even venture to the store to try and buy something new because I'm pretty sure the experience will be way too depressing.
Let your inner glow come shining through, hon!
Michelle

Seaside- I think we can all say we feel your pain, I know I can. Michelle is right we are our own worse critic. I hope you find something that makes you feel good.
Michelle- Happy Birthday! So glad you had fin with your dinner out. A random tip for hiding drains...maternity clothes! I was diagnosed when my youngest was 4 months old and I still had maternity clothes on hand. Most of the tops will fit across the breast area and drape down for the belly, or in your case drains. It hides them really well and I used maternity clothes to hide mine when I went out in public. Seems silly, but it works! I hope youwon't have the drains but if you do give the clothes a try, anyone who has had a kid inthe past few years will still have some laying around, I do!! (See maybe you should be in NH? I would bring your dinner and maternity clothes!!! lol!!)
0 -
also wanted to add, with the styles the way the are now you won't look like your wearing maternity clothes:)
0 -
Laurie...LOL...I haven't been in maternity clothes for more than 30 years!!! I can actually put the drain grenade in a left pants pocket and then wear a regular top. I've been keeping it in my jeans pocket all week (an advantage of having lost quite a bit of weight in the last several months. I just want to be able to dress up a bit for the dinner and wearing a dress or skirt would be nice. I also have a mastectomy camisole that has an inner pocket if I get desperate. Right now most of my pants and tops are big enough to disguise pretty much anything. But I am confident the drain will be gone tomorrow.

Seaside: Thank you for the welcome; I also want to get up early to watch the wedding, I guess that is Friday morning? So we should go to bed early tomorrow night, I guess.
My scalloped potatoes with ham turned out good. I have just started to look at some of the recipes in previous pages. Wow, they look great, I am looking forward to trying some.

Michelle- HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I tryed to post earlier but our electricity kept going off, Kept losing my post! Your dessert sounds heavenly!! Yum!
Laurie-Didnt know they made bunny mac and cheese, how cute. Have you shared your mozzerella rice salad yet? Sounds good
I love Idol and the voice, i record one and watch the other
Seaside- I know how you feel, i used to feel pretty good about myself now my tops have to be covering everything up to my colorbone, and dresses, forget it, I like winters because it gives me an excuse to wear sweaters and pants. As michelle said, Im sure you look better than you think. I dont think I posted the bourbon ham, so i will post that after i send this off, the bourbon ham is very good, its the one i have cooked several times, but i did a different ham glaze on easter and it was fabulous i will be making that from now on when i make a glaze for my hams, i will post both of them- for the second one keep the sauce and dont throw it out use it to pour over your ham each time you have it for dinner, the sauce really makes it!

- 1 city style (brined) ham, hock end*
- 1/4 cup brown mustard
- 2 cups dark brown sugar
- 1-ounce bourbon (poured into a spritz bottle)
- 2 cups crushed ginger snap cookies
Directions
Heat oven to 250 degrees F.
Remove ham from bag, rinse and drain thoroughly. Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan. Using a small paring knife or clean utility knife set to the smallest blade setting, score the ham from bottom to top, spiraling clockwise as you cut. (If you're using a paring knife, be careful to only cut through the skin and first few layers of fat). Rotate the ham after each cut so that the scores are no more than 2-inches across. Once you've made it all the way around, move the knife to the other hand and repeat, spiraling counter clockwise. The aim is to create a diamond pattern all over the ham. (Don't worry too much about precision here.)
Tent the ham with heavy duty foil, insert a thermometer, and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature at the deepest part of the meat registers 130 degrees F.
Remove and use tongs to pull away the diamonds of skin and any sheets of fat that come off with them.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
Dab dry with paper towels, then brush on a liberal coat of mustard, using either a basting brush or a clean paint brush (clean as in never-touched paint). Sprinkle on brown sugar, packing loosely as you go until the ham is coated. Spritz this layer lightly with bourbon, then loosely pack on as much of the crushed cookies as you can.
Insert the thermometer (don't use the old hole) and return to the oven (uncovered). Cook until interior temperature reaches 140 degrees F, approximately 1 hour.
Let the roast rest for 1/2 hour before carving.
*Cook's note: A city ham is basically any brined ham that's packed in a plastic bag, held in a refrigerated case and marked "ready to cook", "partially cooked" or "ready to serve". Better city hams are also labeled "ham in natural juices".
I add a couple extra tablespoons of bourbon, and you dont have to do the ginger snaps if you dont want to.

Ingredients
- 1 (8 pound) bone-in shank ham
- 4 cups water, or as needed
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pinch ground cloves
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Place ham in a roasting pan. Pour in water to a 2 inch depth. Cover with a tight fitting lid.
- Bake for 6 to 8 hours in the preheated oven (all day or all night). Remove from the oven, pour off drippings and reserve. Debone ham, removing any excess fat as well, and return to the roasting pan.
- Skim fat from the top of the drippings, and discard. In a small bowl, mix one cup of the drippings with honey, brown sugar, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce and cloves. Pour this over the ham, cover and return to the oven. Remaining drippings may be discarded or reserved for other uses.
- Bake for another 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving-( I double the glaze for the ham and add a few pinches of the ground cloves in the water as well as in the glaze itself.)

LuvRVing, Happy Birthday! Hope you enjoyed your day, your night out and your dessert!
I saw the Voice and liked it. The only thing is that I don't think the judges should be able to see each other, so they don't know who is turning around!
I totally agree that the loose tops out now are perfect for hiding drains. For my 20 year HS reunion (10 days after BMX and 2 days after having another surgery to remove a huge hematoma on left side), I didn't want to look like a slob in a big baggy shirt, so I tucked the bulbs if the drains in my bra on each side and wore a fitted top and looked great! After all, I only had 2 fills of my TEs at that point so I need a little something to round out the flatness!0 -
Sherrill- lol!! You are one crafty lady!!
Lynn- Welcome!
Debbie- I am not sure if I posted the rice and cheese recipe?
2 sticks 8oz cheddar cheese
1 cup uncooked River Rice (it has to be river rice)
1 tbsp butter
2 eggs
2 cups of milk
cut your cheese into chunks and melt in a double boiler, when half way melted add milk and butter. Cook rice separately according to directions on box. Once your cheese and milk are smooth add two eggs and stir, add rice and stir. Pour into casserole dish and bake at 350 for about 25 minutes until the rice is golden and firm to slice with a butter knife.
Last night as we enjoyed our dinner I finished and turned to my husband and said, "Man is this good, I could eat more but I won't." He asked why. I just looked at him. "Because I want o lose weight not gain it, have you never stopped eating because you should?" He laughed at me and said "no, I eat till I am done eating."
Another great reason why being a man would be nice!

Sherrill - brilliant idea to tuck the drain into the bra...I could do that and accomplish the "wear a dress" objective. I'm down to 25cc's in that drain and I'm betting money that the PS will take it out today and I'll get my first fill. Then I am meeting about 15 people at a local hamburger joint for lunch. These are folks who worked for and with me and it's probably the last time I'll see most of them. It will be a bit birthday celebration/good-bye party.
Speaking of The Voice, keep your eyes on Javier Colon. He is really very good and we have a connection - my daughter took him to her senior prom when we lived in Trumbull, CT. He is a very, very nice young man and we were all excited to see him on the show. Needless to say, we'll be rooting for him.
Ok, gotta get off the PC, take a shower and get ready for a couple of doctor appts...isn't that just our lives these days? And oh, I ate that caramel apple for breakfast. Nuts, fruit, a little sweet...not exactly my usual greek yogurt with berries but I enjoyed every single bite!

Oh Michelle, I LOVED LOVED LOVED Javier Colon!!! He was incredible! He seemed like a really sweet guy when they showed the lead in to his performance. I hope he wins!

Laurie, I was thinking of trying your cheese and rice recipe tonight (may be something my kids will actually eat and like!) I have 2 questions: Is it 8oz total cheese, or 2 sticks at 8oz each? I don't want to under or overdo the amount of cheese. Secondly, do you really have to use river rice? I have regular brown rice in the house and was going to use that.
Oh great...time to go get the kids off the bus and it it POURING
0 -
Sherrill- It is 2 8oz sticks, total of 16oz. Where you have never had it before it might not make a difference to you which kind of rice you use. At Easter my SIL made and brought cheese and rice and she made it with minute rice, you could tell and none of us really ate it. Different texture. Not sure on brown rice either, it is supposed to be an evil pleasure and the brown rice will make it healthier?
Let me know if you try it with changes or not!
0 -
I only have one 8oz block of cheese, so I will halve the recipe and put it in a smaller casserole dish. Is it gooey when you plate it, or is it more firm, like a quiche? I'll let you know how it comes out!
0 -
not quite as firm as quiche, it has some goo to it. It warms up great left over too!
0 -
Laurie- This may sound dumb, but what is river rice? Is it a brand name or come from the river ha! I thought I was kind of knowledgeable in the food area but never heard of it. thanks for the recipe.
Michelle- Javier was fantastic, he was cute too. will be rooting for him. I cant remember who mentioned this, but agree they shouldnt be able to see each other turn around.
I have been saying fhis for 3 weeks now, but I'm cutting out all desserts, I had to get out my fat pants yesterday, uughh! so disgusting! I will eat my regular dinners but cut back on the servings. I had 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast, sm can of albacore tuna with mustard only for lunch- dinner will be a small salad with balsamic vinagar chx with a little soy and chx stock. Hope my 10 pounds comes off fast.

He didn't like the casserole
And he didn't like my cake,
He said my biscuits were too hard
Not like his mother used to make.
I didn't perk the coffee right
He didn't like the stew,
I didn't mend his socks
The way his mother used to do.
I pondered for an answer
I was looking for a clue.
Then I turned around and
smacked the shit out of him....
Like his mother used to do.0 -
Debbie- I am LAUGHING!!!! LOL won't cut it, LAUGHING!!! Great poem!!
River Rice is a brand of rice. The recipe came from my husbands grandmother. I had never heard of it either, but sure enough it is there on the shelf with the other rices. She actually wrote on the recipe card, and I quote * I used minute rice once instead of my faithful river rice and it ruined my casserole! Never use any other! Yha, ok Grandma, but it is true! River rice isn't fluffy, so now that I think of it Sherrill using brown rice just might work!
0 -
Laurie- I loved this poem too, cracked me up! Thought it was appropiate for this thread LOL! I have always bought minute rice mainley because it was easy and fast to make but I will get the river rice next time, thanks!!!
