Sorry Lago,,,,,,,,,,,,,,must be having a Humphrey Bogard "Key Largo" flashback.............No I'm from a small town right outside of Philly...............

Ok, now the pizza question.......I have to be in the mood for Pizza.......although a short story.....My older of the grandsons who live in Chicago now...........went to visit his brother before he decided to move there............he met a girl from there, and they started a relationship.....he had laser eye surgery done, so as a  "get well" package........she sent him from Chicago.........by plane...........a Chicago Pizza, cause she knew he loved it.................WELL once you have had Chicago Pizza nothing is ever the same...................Our Pizza is good here, but it is not Chicago Pizza, even though UNO thinks they have it down pat..................they don't............so that is the story of me and Pizza.

Laurie you know I am too from the NE. I remember my sister ording pizzer here in Chicago. The waitress told her they don't have that on the menu… we were at a pizza joint. Sister was very confused.

Ducky that sister now lives in Balacywd…your backyard. I think she still orders pizzer. Your must have received pizza from here if it was deep dish: http://www.tastesofchicago.com  If I had my choice I would order the Carson's ribs off that site. You can also get stuffed Chicago pizza from here: http://www.giordanos.com

Any one having mint julips for the kentucky derby? I have had a couple already they are so good, i made my famous potatoe salad and my neighbor is bringing her bourbon bq beans and bq pork she had a little disaster in the kitchen so wont be here for another 20 minutes, thought id check in while i had time- If you like this kind of drink its, simple surup which is equal amounts of sugar and water i usually do 2 cups each with a bunch of mint leaves in pan bring to a boil, cool and strain out the mint, put bourbin in a glass with some of the simple surup and some fresh mint leaves. Im wearing my purple hat today too- fun to dress up, i went to the derby twice now not the same as being there but having a great time anyway!

Lago- Sorry about your shingles, my husband had it a couple of years ago and he was in so much pain>

Lago, I've had kidney stones several times and I had shingles.  The nerve damage pain was the worst--I'ld take stones to shingles any time.  You have my sympathy and I can honestly say empathy as well.

Michelle- we love to eat at Jack Stack's BBQ when we're in KC. Love the burnt ends!!

Going out to Shogun tonight. Don't do the grill most of the time, just order off the menu. Much cheaper.

Chicken on the grill tomorrow for Mother's Day. Finally, no rain, so we are ready for some outdoortime. Happy Mother's Day to all!!

Jacee - there are so many good places for bbq in Kansas City.  And one place has the best ribs, another has the best burnt ends, etc.

This time next week I'll be looking for the best clam chowdah in southern NH!!!

I am packed, the uHaul is ready with mom's stuff, and the car is loaded.  My mother's day present is the beginning of the journey back to my family - my kids, my grandkids and the rest of my extended family.  We leave in the morning!

Thanks chabba. Yeah I would have done a 7th round of chemo instead of this shingles but I wasn't given a choice… you can opt out of shingles either.  Just hope the pain gets better soon. I'm taking 400 mg of iburprofen every 4 hours now. I may have no stomach lining left in a few days. (Yes did the narcotics one day but that gave me a new set of issues that I didn't feel were worth the trade off Frown)

LuvRVing DD is everywhere in Chicago too but not quite like back home in MA. We have more Starbucks in Chicago than WA!

lago, when I had shingles I wound up on neurontin (sp?) for over a year to control the pain.  No over the counter would touch it--and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain. I had to take some narcotics while the neurontin built up enough in my system to be effective but even most of them didn't help much.

Chabba I'm really hoping this doesn't go on for that long. I'm now starting my 3rd week. The rash/blisters are really healing but not gone yet. My PS will not do my exchange surgery if I still have pain. I have already had my exchange surgery moved up a month. If I have to have these TE in place for over a year they are going to have to take some of the saline out.

lago, shingles seem to vary from person to person almost as much as BC.  For many the pain is short term, not much longer than the rash.  I hope yours is like that.

Chabba from what I'm reading the long term nerve pain/damage is more common in "older people". I just turned 50. Not sure how old you are but I have a feeling if I was at least in my 60's I might be headed for a longer recovery.

lago - I was 59.  There was one funny thing about it.  My rash line was right at the top of my bra line on the left side so I could not wear a bra.  I was just learning to bowl, league had started about a month before.  Now I'm a large breasted woman so every time I threw the ball I was bumping myself, flipity- flop, flipity-flop.

Just found this thread and it is wonderful

Lago, I too had Shingles but was very lucky in that my Mom knew what it was and I got to the doctor very quickly to didn't get any of the awful symptoms. However I do notice whenever I am really stressed the place where the rash started comes back and I immediately try and rest and do whatever I can to make it go away. Don't know if that could possibly help but when my Mom got shingles they were awful - she was in her 60's and we were to leave for a trip to the Caribean. We went and because it was a funny time of year there were very few people around - For her being out in the sun and saltwater seemed to dry up the blisters and made them go away very quickly - I mean days not weeks. So not sure if that helps you but thought I'd mention it.

Someone on another post said you knew about vit B for nerve pain so thought I'd ask as I have that.

My ex was a wonderful gormet cook which was great but he always hated anything I made. Now that I'm on my own I think I've done pretty well and funny thing is my kids say now I cook more elaboratly than their dad. However today being Mother's Day the kids and my ex are cooking dinner for me so I'm excited about that. What a wonderful thread idea as somedays it is so hard to think what on earth to cook yet again! Brilliant idea! Happy Mother's Day.

We had a great dinner last night of spaghetti and meatballs using duckyb1's gravy recipe. I don't think I used enough meat as I had to add more flavor at the end. My DH loves meatballs and they turned out great, so he was a happy guy! I made a big batch, so lots to put in the freezer for later. My boys love meatball sandwiches, so some will end up on french rolls, popped under the broiler with mozzerella cheese. Maybe some with peppers & onions. The sauce will also make a great soup base.

My DH is making my Grandmother's recipe for Swedish pancakes for breakfast; I love them with strawberries & sour cream.

Stanzie my mom had shingles too so I had an idea that might be what I had. Noticed it at 12pm, contacted doctor at 6pm. Took antivirals by 9pm that day. My doctor told me it wasn't a miracle drug. For some reason it continued to spread for a week. I hate to think what would have happened if I didn't get the antivirals so soon.

I'm making my French toast for lunch. Husband is in the mood. Just needs to go out and get some bread. No Challah bread at the store down the street so not sure what he'll come back with.

We are grilling chicken on the barbecue tonight. I think we'll have stir fried bok choy with it. Hmmmm.  If I remember will post photo later.

OOH My kids brought over my ex-husbands special ribs! I have no clue how he makes them but I actually don't normally like ribs as they are usually too fatty for me. Anyway, haven't had them since we divorced over 5 years ago so I'm thrilled and excited!!! And I didn't have to cook at all - even more exciting!

We went the buffet route today.  And I'm glad I ate lightly yesterday.  What I ate this early afternoon smacks of gluttony.  And four mini desserts!

The restaurant has a lovely backyard view by the river and they've planted wildflowers and installed a number of fish ponds and animal feeders so the air is alive with all manner of birdies.  It's not unusual to see racoons, opposum, even a skunk now and then while you dine.  They also have binoculars fastened to the window sills so you can catch a close-up.

The restaurant used to be an old, wooden floor, wooden bar tavern.  A bit of a dive but with exceptional food, friendly folks and great thit-kicken music on weekends.

It's still called Whiskey River but occasional flooding combined with public demand provided the impetus to move it a little further up the river bank.  It was a wise idea as their business is booming.

What I remember from the menu:

Roast prime rib of beef, ham, chicken breast on wild rice with orange sauce, Swedish potatoes, grilled salmon with citrus fruits, orange roughy with lobster leek sauce.

Seafood pasta salad, tossed greens, fresh fruit platter.

Scrambled eggs, egg scramble with crab and tomatos, bacon, link sausages, Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries or blueberries, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict.

A chocolate fountain and various goodies to dip, miniature cheesecakes and pies of peach, banana, apple, chocolate and pineapple/coconut.

Another pie caught my eye.  The chef called it Fruits of the Forest pie.  Something new to me.  I didn't take any but it appeared to be rhubarb and mixed berries.  Anyone else familiar with this?

I won't tell you how many times I filled my plate for all the dandelions sprouting but I'd suggest it was some outrageous.

And now back to counting calories.  Need to pay the piper.

Have a peaceful and healing evening, readers.

Treespirite...........glad your gravy turned out ok..........depending on how many cans of puree you used that would determine how flavorful your gravy would be.......I usually use beef, pork and veal for the meatballs, and also sausage, or a piece of pork.

Another good thing as a footnote is.........fresh basil in the gravy, or dried in the jar (fresh is best)

and an onion in the gravy, which cuts down on the acidity of the tomato.

I didn't have a clue who "Largo" was when I first read those posts!  All these many posts I thought the first letter of lago was a capital i, not a small l.  Very Shakespearean!  I love some of the names on the BC.org threads.  Very imaginative and descriptive, like otobhealthy.

Our family gathering at my mom's house was noisy once my niece arrived with her three children, aged 15 mos, almost 6 and almost 8.  The list of foods they eat is so limited that my niece microwaved chicken tenders for them to dip into ketchup.  The little boy wouldn't even taste the chicken'n dumplings that was the main dish.  The almost 6 little girl did sample the dumplings and said she liked them but switched to the tenders.  The baby ate dumplings and tenders when she paused long enough as she raced around the house.  She looked adorable in her sundress that she had worn to church.  None of the kids or the niece gave the garden salad a second glance.

My brother Gary, who's an excellent cook, made the huge pot of chicken and dumplings.  They were delicious.  I made the salad which was dressed with a home-made vinaigrette.  If I do say so, the dressing was very good.  I got the recipe from an old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook.  It was actually called Italian dressing.  I also made yeast rolls using Miz Inez's recipe.  All of my mother's older kids grew up eating Miz Inez's rolls, which have a kind of mythic goodness in our minds.  Miz Inez was a woman who lived in our neighborhood  She had 6 or 7 kids.  Her husband never worked and the family lived on Welfare.  Miz Inez made all their bread.  All the kids grew up and got jobs and had families.  Their welfare background was not a stigma.

Our Mother's Day desserts were very mediocre because none was home-made.  My sister Linda brought cheesecake and my sister Michelle brought meringue pies.  It was just as well since three of us are diabetics, myself and two brothers.  One of the pies was sugar free and it was especially blah-tasting.

Two of my mother's three sons with wives and all three of her daughters were present, so it was a nice gathering.  In the afternoon some of us walked a quarter of a mile down the country road to my sister Michelle's place to see her three little foals, newly born.  Michelle raises quarterhorses.

Lago, my DH is from the Chicago area.  He grew up in Oak Forest and his brother still lives in Orland Park.  The next time we go there, maybe you and I could get together for some Chicago pizza.  DH is convinced no other pizza is as good.  He also loves the Chicago hot dogs.  I've also enjoyed some delicious prime rib in the Chicago area.

I'd better go and walk 3 miles and try to exercise off all those calories I consumed yesterday.  Happy Monday to all.

Carole tell your DH I live a few block from the Wiener Circle. Yes the deep dish pizza is great here but there are so many other things to eat too. Carson's ribs are the best too. Lots of amazing ethic foods.

and of course if you're out here you better give me a jingle. I have met several women from this forum. 2 of them from out of state.

for dinner tonight I am making an old dish I haven't made in forever.  I guess I forgot about it?  You use parmesean cheese instead of bread crumbs on boneless chicken breasts and then cook them in a little oil in a pan.  Pop in the oven with just a light sprinkle of mozzarella cheese and bake for about 15 minutes.  I dice up tomatoes, add garlic and chopped fresh basil and you serve it on top of the chicken.  I make the topping an hour ahead of time and let sit out so it is room temp and not cold.

Hope everyone is doing well and feeling good. Michelle I hope your road trip is smooth and fun!

Laurie hope you had a nice mothers day! Your dinner sounds good, i make mine like yours only do both parmesan cheese and bread crumbs mixed together and sometimes i add a little marinaia sauce over top with melted mozzerrel cheese too thats what i love about cooking you can add or take away and do so much with chicken dishes.

My speggetti and meatball dinner was good last night, will be having leftovers this evening, i think its always better the next day after all the flavors get a chance to merry!
