Bobo, benign is a wonderful report.  I'm happy for you.

A belated happy birthday to Michelle.

Laurie, I get tired just thinking about keeping up with two small boys!  Sounds like you have a good parenting partnership with your dh.

Today is starting out as a very pretty day.  I plan to go for a walk and then decide whether it's too wet to get out into the yard with the pruning shears.  Dh takes care of mowing and weedeating (our house sits on 2 acres) but it's up to me to do the weeding, pruning, mulching, etc.  My main interest in gardening is planning and planting, not maintenance.  A gardener would be nice!

Dinner will be something with poached chicken, probably enchiladas.  I have a whole chicken thawed out.

I'll have to look up samosa.  It sounds like a fancy cocktail!

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!  My son took me out for lobster yesterday...yum!

Tonight I am cooking Hamburg Vegetable Chowder.  I used to make this often (years ago) and I sort of forgot about it.  It's super-simple and very tasty.  It's probably more of a winter dish, but I'm not letting that stop me.  I got fresh(?) corn on the cob and cut the kernels off two cobs to add to it.  I ate one ear and it was nice and sweet.  How do they keep corn sweet this time of year?  It' got to be coming from Florida...GMO maybe, probably?

We have been very dry - the lake isn't filling up very quickly at all.   Last year at this time it was back up to boating levels.  They lower the level in mid-October and it usually fills back up on its own.

Yay Bobo - benign is awesome news!

Michelle- The soup looks great- love barley!  We had corn on the cob last night too and was surprised how good it was.

2nd time- Love your stories about your DD, made me smile.

Lacey glad you had such a great day, your meal sounds wonderful.  Boston must seem different now...but in same ways I think the love is over coming the terror of it all.

So spring is in full swing and we are busy!  DS1 is back to pre school and DS2 and I ran errands and got things done this morning.  Followed by an afternoon of finger painting and washing the car while having a water fight, bike rides, neighbors etc.  We got home late and kids are having some quick mac and cheese before bed.  DH is grilling some chicken and we will have that on salads once they are asleep.  It is so nice that the leaves are popping out and the weather has changed.  It makes for good sleeping :)

    Can I join this thread?

I'm on a real strict diet due to another illness, and I need to post my food so it will keep me accountable for awhile. Just like exercise.

Tonight's dinner was homemade bone broth, eggdrop and turnip green soup.

Of course you can join this thread!!! All are welcome!

I really like barley, too. I love its crunchiness in a smooth soup. Something so satisfying about that.

Nibbana, of course you are welcome here! This group posts a wide variety of foods, so hopefully we can be of help with your documenting and some new ideas.

I went to my strength and fitness session at the hospital today. My short term personal trainer is lovely, and I am already enjoying getting more involved in regular aerobic exercise. Next for the weights.....and I was happy to learn in my assessment today that my balance isn't bad at all. I am feeling good about making this commitment to myself, especially if it keeps helping to chase some of the fatigue factor.

On a less positive note, my PCP caught up with me today and does want me to take a low dose statin to prevent any cardiac events from happening over the next few years given some calcifications in my arteries. Boo hiss...more meds. She assures me that this low dose should barely be noticeable in terms of SEs. We'll see.....

Carole, I totally hear you about the wish for a gardner to do the maintenance. I suspect you must gave backup when you start your travels. I love planting, tho this year my wretched hands may not be up to much.

Anyone watch The Big C tonight? Warning.....definitely more upsetting than previous seasons. Laura Linney is such an amazing actress!

Planning to do a long walk in the AM to our voting precinct.

    Goodnight all.....

Laurie... Thanks! Today's story is some thing else!

Michelle... Thanks for the recipe! Will need to try. I agree with Lacey about the barley.

Nibbana... Welcome! Hope to see you back again soon!

Hello to all! Welcome Nibana. Happy Belated to Sharon and Michelle. And, if I didn't give you a shoutout, I love you all anyway! This thread moves fast indeed! LOL. Guess we eat a LOT! LOL

Dinner tonight was a kabab from Sendiks. Beef with veggies. I grill it in my little foremen. It costs about $5.00 already with the.peppers, onion, tomatoes. And I get two meals out of it. When I'm by myself during the week, I like those. Next time ill get a chicken one. They have a wonderful meat counter, wish they had been around my neighborhood when I was cooking for my family. Used another of the freezer meals on Saturday. Honey Balsamic chicken drumsticks. Cooked on high for 30 min, they come out soooo good... Much love to all.

Ok, about today. Have been on a bit of a high lately: exchange surgery has actually left me feeling better and getting a bit more sleep; DD has been an absolute doll after year and a half of major stress; she's had some great things happen for her (like promotion at work, less hours but more money and her college program created a job FOR her; one of my best friend's husband has been on the lung transplant list thru UCLA (he's been very sick since Christmas 2011), and got double lung transplant Friday and he's doing so well it's a huge miracle; and it's been major challenge to get DH to help me out, ask for dinner suggestions from him and he complains so today he gave me 4 dinner ideas! Wow! Minor miracle! I finally felt well enough to go out shopping on my own (no grocery shopping in almost 2 weeks). Go to the local store, didn't see a big puddle at the front of the store so I fell causing me to pull on my bad arm (the one that had more work done at exchange surgery 10 days ago and has been causing me great pain) and fell to my knees. Major embarrassment, more importantly, major pains on the bad side, arm and chest. Had to fill out incident report with manager, had difficulty concentrating to finish shopping. Oh, well, this too shall pass. Glad I see PS post op appointment #2 on Thursday.

So, something easy for dinner tonight, steak sammies using cube steaks with roasted fingerling potatoes and salad for me, tater tots for DH.

    HI Nibbana.

Sharon cooked tonight. Baked Ziti (I guess that's how it's spelled), corn and a salad.

And, then I went up to Home Depot to get a basket to put on the back of the bicycle DD uses to get to school.

    Edited to add.

2nd, I was typing and got up before posting my message.  So I didn't see your post until after I hit submit.  Hopefully the fall didn't cause problems.  We don't want you undoing the PS' work.

    Hi, Nibbana.

2nd, what rotten luck to fall just when you were feeling better.  Hope you didn't injure yourself badly.

Corn on the cob is back to make America happy!  LOL!

Tried the green sauce enchiladas last night.  The canned sauce (Hatch brand) was just ok.  But the Frontera green salsa is quite good.  Couldn't find the packet of good tortillas I'd bought at Fresh Market so used the Mission corn tortillas which aren't as good.  Filling was poached chicken, black beans, a little sour cream, a spoonful of green salsa and some Mexican cheese.  Poured some of the green sauce on top and crumbled more of the cheese (can't conjure up the name;  it's white) on top.   Heated on 400 in the toaster oven.  DH liked the green enchiladas better than the red.  I like them both.  A quick dinner prep when the ingredients are all ready to assemble.  Made a cabbage slaw for the side.

Tonight's dinner is as yet unknown.

We're in for a rainy week.  Fortunately, yesterday was sunny and I cleaned the back porch and adjoining patio, using a handy little pressure washer that does a great job.  Off to the YMCA for exercise this morning.

Welcome Nibbana  maybe you can help us be accountable also....went to put on some shorts on Saturday and they were a little snug...Ugg. Really, really gotta get moving more

Lacey  I like the sounds of your strength exercise program.  I have lost a lot of strength in my lifting abilities...Dh can attest to that when I try to help him lift and carry things.

2nd  Soooo scary with that fall! Hope you Dr. appt shows that all is well. Love the encouraging stories and YES daughters do eventually become less self-absorbed and come around to being great friends.

Did not plan any dinner last night till it was about 7pm so decided that a quick pasta carbonara was in order.  Used bacon and added some sun dried tomatos. My kind of dinner, but hubby really would have preferred some sauce on his.

Well, sadly, Greek fest is over. Three days of food from one day of cooking worked for me this week. Then on Sunday, we took the kid and kid-partner out to dinner to celebrate their birthdays. Total lack of imagination there-- we went back to Rendezvous. Their Sunday night price fixe is just such a great deal for that quality of food. I don't know who stole my daughter, but she ordered a buccatini with olives and anchovies. I have NEVER ever seen her eat either olives nor anchovies. Guess she, and her palate, are growing up.

Last night I made a Carl's Sausage Kitchen supper with some Weisswurt, pretzels, sauerkraut, and mustard. Also made some cole slaw for Mr. 02143 since he doesn't eat sauerkraut. Tonight we are back to a large salad and maybe an asparagus quiche or asparagus soup. The asparagus is aging so it can't stand on its own all that well but I just hate to waste food, so it will turn into something.

Having some real hypo symptoms these days so not posting much. Hope to get these meds adjusted next week. I hate feeling like a slug.

Susan - tell me about the sausage supper with pretzels. Sounds interesting. Hope you get hypo. sx under control. Sluggish should be saved for winter, though hypo cold in winter would not be pleasant.

2ndtime - Praying that you did not major damage in your fall. Good you already have PS Thursday. Glad for all your other good news. Daughters are a mystery. Haven't talked to mine in over a week. She admitted she thought I would be the mother from hell when she moved out, always keeping track of her. Surprise - not me. Moody as hell too, but then so am I.

Carole - having chicken enchiladas tonight too. Have bit of leftover roasted chick and will add some canned. Will take some of your rain. If we don't get it with this next cold front I will have to start watering. It's supposed to be 36 here Friday morning; average low is 60. I still have houseplants not put out. The ones left are too heavy for me to move much. I've been pulling the little ones up to the brick and tarping them then laying porch cushions around. What is with this weather? Saw the tornado report on weather channel and far behind most years - not that I'm complaining about that with last year and the flying 18 wheeler trailers.

    Welcome Nibbana.

Susan- Hope you get to feeling better.

2nd time- That sounds like quite the fall!  Especially after just having surgery, hope you're ok.

Lacey- I watched the Big C.  I think we are in for some big doese of reality and lots of tears.  Part of me doesn't want to watch....but I have watched all the other seasons and can't leave the characters.  Debbie- Did you watch it?

Another beautiful day weather wise here.  Loving spring and the leaves are starting to come out.  As Michelle would say it is taco Tuesday on my house tonight.  Tomorrow I need to so the food shopping and need to come up with my ideas.  DH thinks we should start eating healthier....no menu suggestions though.  So I am going to have to put my thinking cap on to come up with meal ideas that everyone will eat.

This morning DS2 decided to give himself a haircut.  He now has a big bald spot on the front of his head- right down to the scalp.  Yesterday I had bought a clipper set and cut DS2's hair, DS1 just had a hair cut 2 weeks ago so he didn't need one- I guess he was jealous.  These boys are nuts!

    Welcome nibbana!

Lacey, I am so proud of your exercise regime!  Hope to follow in your footsteps.

Dinner:  takeout thai noodles after teaching.  One beer.  Mocha maca crunch coconut ice cream!

2nd time -- Don't fall!  I cannot take it!  :)  I read your post with my hand out, wishing that you hadn't fallen.

Eric, you are so sweet.  And Carole, another excellent dinner post from you, as usual.  You make me feel like a hack in the cooking department.   It's a good thing I am marrying into onion rolls..

Laurie!  I love that story about the haircut.  Will you "even it out"?  Did you cry?  Or are you tough as nails at this point?  I cannot watch the Big C anymore.  In fact, I cannot even watch Grey's Anatomy.  After my first surgery I felt queasy watching the residents "doing it" in the supply closet right after they'd told someone she way dying.  I am such a wet blanket.

Wait!  I buried the lead.  I have ordered a Vitamix!

Laurie... I think at some point all kids try the 'self haircut' and always without good results...lol! DS decided to cut his own when he was in elementary school the afternoon before school pictures! Cut it clear down to the scalp and when I asked him 'what did you do?' he dared to say 'nothing... why?'... Thankfully, Walmart was open. That's how we came to own our very own Wahl clippers and DS had his first school photo with a buzz cut..lol!

Dinner turned into an asparagus frittata. Absolutely delicious! Served with a huge salad. Enough leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Always thinking ahead.

The self-haircut. _sigh_ I believe that my sister and I did this, but my kid never felt the need. More healthy means nothing... he needs to give you details. Does he want to eat fewer carbs? less fat? more grains? LOL! By the time you finish asking him all the possible questions, he will regret starting the discussion.

Laurie - per Susan's lead, be gentle with him. Maybe some menu ideas based on her questions.

Not sure if DD did the haircut stuff; don't think so. I know I cut all the hair off my arm one time, thinking I was "shaving my arms" or something like that. LOL about the clippers. My skinflint DH cuts his own hair with Wahl clippers. He's happy so what the heck. Fashion plates we ain't.

Seaside is so right.  You're not due for family pictures soon, I hope.

    2nd,

Yikes on the fall!!! I hope the pain is brief and that there is no damage done... Good thing you already have an appt with the PS for Thursday! I always worry about slipping and falling on ice in the winter... but I guess water is slippery no matter what it's form!

    Bobo,

Congrats on the Vitamix (and marrying into onion rolls... lol)... I would be happy with either and over the moon at having both!

    Susan,

Would you be willing to share the Asparagus Frittata recipe?

    Luv,

Funny about DH... I was so not happy when I had to run out and get those clippers! Told DS that he had just signed up for however many home haircuts it took to make up for buying the clippers (he was older than your boys Laurie)... I only knew one cut and that's a kind of shearing cut with a shorter length on the back and sides and a little longer on top... He seemed to like it...

He wears his hair very short now and still uses that Wahl but does it himself... Guess I got my money out of those clippers after all!

PS... my niece, when she was little, shaved her arms with a razor that my sister had in the bath... When asked why?? She said.. well people shave their legs so why not arms? They're easier to reach! Can't argue with that...lol!
