So...whats for dinner?

Tonight is the kind of night for me where I want to put my chair in the pantry and lock myself in it and chow down on some crap...especially chocolate!

Tonight's dinner was freshly-caught swordfish with a hoisin glaze, dry-fried green beans and jasmine rice. A lovely change from the party leftovers we have been eating since Sunday.
Lacey, the oddest and yet best words in the medical lexicon is "unremarkable." Particularly, when it is applied to our breasts. :-)
Welcome home Eric. Deb, hope you are okay. Your absence is noticeable.

Yay Lacey!
Eric - glad you are on your way home, although the routing seems a bit inefficient.
Susan - freshly caught swordfish sounds like a beautiful treat.
I had to go to the chemo center for a neulasta shot this afternoon. My white count was way too low yesterday and I almost didn't get to have chemo. I'll have to be careful for a couple of days...moved my Memorial Day picnic to Monday.

Thanks for the interpretations, Luv. Perfectly accurate!
Yes, Susan the one time I love having "unremarkable" used to describe a part of me!
The only extra thing was that the radiologist (same one who gave me my Dx in Aug, 2011 and was factual but so reassuring, that I was not freaked....just started making the calls to docs she told me I'd need to contact) supported my getting an MRI once a year in addition to the yearly mammo. She discussed how variant that recommendation is depending on your hospital but said that the MRIs do pick up some cancers that are sometimes missed by the mammos. My surgeon agrees with this plan...not so my oncologist, who originates from a hospital where they prefer not to do thenyearly MRIs but these two will overrule her and the surgeon just orders it. I hope when I am fully retired, my insurance doesn't resist.
After that good news I bopped off to the derm lady, who is very integrative in her approach. She confirmed that my estrogen chasing meds is connected to my sudden surge of allergies this year, and gave me advice about managing my recent skin reactions. She also feels compelled to share what is best to eat...oh dear, grains bad.....dairy bad.....cruciferous veggies good along with organic meats, and fish. I dunno! I love them all! I passed on having my actinic kerotoses treated during this visit since I would have to give a retirement talk with a scabby face next week....wasn't going to subject folks to that. So I need to go back, and will probably do it before I start breaking rules and getting tan. I would be very hesitant to show up in this woman's office the color I am in August.
Michelle, probably a better plan to do your barbecue Monday anyway, due to the rainy forecast for Sat and Sunday. Hope you are feeling better after your shot.
We are likely bagging our trip to the lake and may just do a lot of movies here this weekend. Can't see sitting in the cold rain, with no TV on there. On such rainy days, our neighbors up there mainly spend the days eating and drinking....I don't need either right now. We'll see.......weather can change here on a moment's notice!
Have a good evening all.
Thinking of you, Deb and Debbie....and hoping you are now happily ensconced in your abode, Eric. Wonder how Kay is doing. Lent is waaaaaay over!0 -
Been home for about 2 hours....DD is needing help, so haven't gotten out of my uniform...was less busy at Sandy in New York..
Eric0 -
Lacey- Yha for great results! I say go to the lake anyway
Eric- Glad you made it home safe.
Jen- HA!
this is the third time I am trying to post. DH used the computer and does not believe in opening new tabs and kept erasing my posts before I posted. He headed up tonight and we will go tomorrow once DS gets out of school, around lunch time. I cooked, cooked loaded the camper and cleaned the house. I just have to vacuum tomorrow and pack last minute things that we need for the morning. Am I the only nut job that needs to clean the house before they go away? The weather looks horrible so I went to the craft store and bought clay and paints. Between that and them jumping in puddles we should be good. We will make the best of it. Tonight dinner was a pizza I picked up for me and the kids. DH headed up tonight as he works up north and it will save us time tomorrow.
I hope everyone is well. I will have not internet or phone service once I hit the campground. So take care!
Also- Seaside- I hope things are better at home. My mother had a phrase "clouds move". It all changes and we get past things. We have dark and we have light. My son tells me a thousand times a day he loves me, he hugs me and kisses me. He also poops in the driveway and colors his face. I will miss most of it----not all of it. But soon he will be a stinky teen ager and i will miss it I am sure. This too shall pass for better or worse. (((hus))))

hus? try hugs. Jeesh.

holy repatative- sorry- guess I need to go to bed.

Laurie, you mom was such a wise woman....:)
So we bit the bullet and watched the finale of the Bic C tonight....lord,I admire that writer!
We were both crying....and I will so miss that Kathy. What a wonderfully authentic character! Every time I see Laura Linney in another show, I will miss Kathy! I was glad the writer talked about the experience of writing it at the end.
Have a great trip....you have worked hard for it! Just the novelty of the new camper will be so much fun for all of you! Smart mom to get arts and crafts stuff! Enjoy!0 -
Lacey,
The recommendations on the MRI vary so widely. I had an MRI annually in the fall and my mammo/us in the spring for my first 3 years. This past fall my BS said, since we've had 3 clean MRIs, that we can discontinue them if I feel all right with that. I agreed but, truthfully, don't yet know how I feel about skipping it.... Happy for one less test but spooked about one less safety net....
Laurie,
Love your Mom's words.... and Clouds, do indeed, Move! That's where we need to just have faith! Different ages have their challenges (and their benefits) but we just do our best to guide them, teach them and, above all, love them..
Things here are going better and I think we're on the right path where it will continue...0 -
Yeah Lacey! Laurie, I am the same way about cleaning like a mad woman before a trip. Michelle, I hope the neulasta gets your counts up there without pain. Welcome back Eric!
Home tomorrow after a Costco and trader Joes run. Who knows what goodies await me there . . .0 -
Oh... One more thing, we went to Direct TV last week and get 3 months free of Showtime so just started watching The Big C (don't worry about spoiling it I already know how it ends)... DH and I are liking it so far but I seem to find myself feeling very emotional in even these early episodes.
I think telling my children and parents was one of the hardest things I had to do and, since the first epidodes dealt with that, I think it may have hit a bit close to home...0 -
Lacey thanks for that info on allergies. I, too, never had the allergy problems that I am having now and my face is red and flaky, kind of like roseacea. So frustrating dealing with all of these "new" issues that cancer has given me.
Laurie Hope it dries out so you and the kids can have some outdoor time. Only 44 degrees here this morning and raining. Not sure what our plan will be either to entertain the 4 adult children visiting us.
I also clean before leaving, because for some reason, it always looks so dreary and unkempt when we return. Just want to return to a nice clean house.

I try to leave the house clean before leaving, too, but we leave for 3 months! There are always some dead bugs to be picked up when we return. Since we turn off the water and don't want to bother anyone to come in and flush the toilets, I saran-wrap the bowls to keep the water from evaporating. We leave the A/C turned to about 81. With the storm shutters cranked down, it stays relatively cool inside and no mildew. My sister picks up the mail at the post office every 30 days and deposits it in the house. Mostly throwaways when we go through it. Neighbor boy mows the lawn and gets a nice paycheck when we get home!
We had a delicious pasta dish with the home-made orechiette last night. The sauce was simple and yummy. Fine-diced onion, garlic, ground chuck, fresh basil, thyme and parsley from the herb garden on the patio, s & p and a little cayenne. Oh, and fresh diced roma tomatoes. Grated parm-reg and fresh basil on top. Served with a tossed salad with spring greens, tomato, cucumber, and avocado. Greek olives on mine and sweet onion on dh's.
Tonight will be dinner out with our neighbors, parents of the boys we have hired to do our summer grass mowing since they built the house next door on land we sold to them. They have four boys and we are down to the youngest one now. He is sixteen. So in a couple of years we will have to make other plans for summer yard work if we're still able to go away for the summer.
DH is in the mood for Mexican for tonight. I will go along with the concensus but I prefer my own healthier Mexican.
I have an apptment with a plastic surgeon today to see if he thinks he should remove a small cancer on my face. I know this surgeon well since I taught him in high school! In 2007 he gave me a facelift. Well, he didn't "give" it to me but I think he gave me a good price. I'm concerned that the dermatologist may leave a scar on my face similar to one on my leg from her removal of a basal cell a couple of years ago.
Welcome home, Eric! Hugs to Deb and Debbie and anyone else who needs a hug.

Carole - don't screw around. If you've got cancer on your face, then it's still cancer and it still has to go. I had some basal removed from my chest about a month ago. My husband has had a number of basal removed as well as two squamos (sp?). He just had a biopsy done on his ear for another possible basal a couple of days ago. His/our dermatologist talked to him about the fact that some people do die of basal skin cancer because they don't deal with it - so be sure to take care of it. You don't want to survive breast cancer and then die of basal cell skin cancer!!!

OMG this recipe just came to my email. I get daily Relish recipes. I cannot vouch for it but it does look decadent and yummy.
relish.com/recipes/dark-chocolate-peanut-butter-bars/
Don't know why it will not post as a link. Most of mine do. It does copy/paste to URL, I tried it. Had the so-so deli chicken last night with baked potatoes and apple/raisin bars I made. Might need to cut sugar a bit in them but they are good. Tonight will be the remainder of chicken and cauliflower maybe roasted but it is very humid so if I didn't turn on the oven it would be good. Maybe just steamed with some sauce on it so DH will eat it.
Carole - doesn't hurt to get another opinion on your "spot". Can it be treated with chemicals or freezing? Have you talked to the derm. about alternatives? Have you had a basal cell dx or is it actinic keratosis?
0 -
luvmygoats I just have to ask, what kind of goats do you have? I love them too (grew up on a farm) but I am a city dweller now so living vicariously.
Seasidememories, I hear 'ya. I have watched "the big C" from episode one this month on our cable system, since they were all available. It hits too close to home, yes. However sometimes I do find myself channeling Laura Linney's character and breaking out of my mold to do super fun stuff that I would not have made time for before my diagnosis. So that part is good. But it sure is hard to watch sometimes.
I am making spinach lassagna for dinner- we must have our greens after all! Thanks for all the recipes and tips on this thread.0 -
Luv, the small cancer on my cheek is actinic keratosis. I'm scheduled next Wed. to have it removed at a surgery center where a pathologist will be on hand to examine the margins. I will cancel the apptment at the dermatologist's office to have her remove it. I am confident that my former high school student/plastic surgeon will do a better job as far as cosmetic results.
He's a marathon runner and has run the Boston but didn't run it this year. He really likes the New York marathon because the route goes through all the five boroughs.

Sciencegal,
Welcome! And I agree.. When I was first diagnosed and went through treatment I do think I was a bit like Laura in stepping out of my comfort zone and truly appreciating each moment for what it is. I think as time has gone by, I've fallen back into old habits. I think that even though the show sometimes makes me cry it also serves to remind me of what is important...
To all in the NE,
Hoping for better weather this weekend than what we had here today! We barely made 50 degrees with a cold drizzle all day! Has been a crazy spring so far... Snow one week, 80 + the following week and now back to the 50's.... Hope this isn't a preview of summer!0 -
Hi Sciencegal.
Sharon cooked dinner tonight. She cooked and shredded chicken and then mixed it with BBQ sauce. She spread that on a tortilla shell and covered it with shredded cheese and chopped onions. Then, she baked it at 400F until the cheese melted and the tortilla looked toasted. If she doesn't make it again, I will. :-) Once the chicken was cooked, it took only another 15 minutes to make.

Carole: I do the same thing. I have twice yearly full exams with my dermatologist, but if she finds anything she thinks should be cut instead of just frozen - off I go to the derm plastic surgeon. Most of my derm surgeries have been MOHS - the doc doesn't close the site & keeps sending off samples until the margins are clear. Good luck next Wed.

Last night I invited a friend last minute to enjoy our dinner with us. I did a full Southern thing- fried chicken thighs, sliced tomatoes, steamed green beans, the last of the baked corn, and biscuits. For once, I even made dessert.... little shortbreads with strawberries and ice cream. Oh, and cucumbers and radishes, which are being harvested locally. Delicious!
I am one of those people who has never spent hours in the sun. My Dad was a red-head and we were never allowed outside without tons of sunscreen or between 11-2 in the day. The one time I remember ignoring this rule, I got so burned. I never did that again! I have a team of doctors, dozens of them, but not a dermatoligist in the lot!
My husband, and his whole family, chose no sunscreen, in the South. They are forever having to have little bits and bobs attended to. As you can imagine, my daughter who is as fair as me, was also taught to stay out of the direct sun.

Susan, you were wise to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen. I am fair-skinned and never tanned easily so when I was young, I slathered on oil and lay out in the sun. Admittedly my skin turned a pretty golden tan but I am paying for it now. DH was always an outdoors person and he never wore sunscreen until he got older and started visiting the dermatologist regularly. A few years ago he had the MOHS surgery on his nose and had to go to a PS for reconstruction. The same PS who will be removing my skin cancer.
That southern dinner sounds delicious.
Our Mexican dinner out was very good. This restaurant is a little pricier and more upscale than your average Mexican eatery. It was quiet enough for conversation. I had the chiles rellenos with Spanish rice and re-fried beans. There was ample food on the plate but it wasn't a huge platter with too much food. To my delight I could order a margarita sweetened with agave instead of sugar.
This afternoon I plan to make a big pot of spaghetti sauce for tomorrow's noon dinner at my house. Spaghetti and meat sauce is on the limited list of foods that my niece's three children will eat. Plus it's too hot to use the oven now, and we have to plan a meal that allows me to take my mother to church at 10:30. Winter meals are easy because we can put a pork or beef roast in the oven or crockpot.
Just changed my plans following a phone call. I will play golf at 1 pm and make the sauce this morning.
Our dinner tonight will be ribeye. The carnivore in me is calling for steak!

Correction--tomorrow's noon dinner is at my mother's house.

Susan that sounds like a delicious meal....mmmm fried chicken! On tv this morning the guy did a grilled chicken cordon blue that looked awesome...used chicken thighs pounded flat spred dijon mustard on and then the ham chunks and gouda cheese and bacon bits.
welcome sciencegal!

Everyone's dinners sound great as usual.. It was supposed to be sunny and 70 today, but instead it's 55 and rainy. Figures. I had outdoor work planned today. So instead, it's unpacking, laundry and Senate Bean soup with corn cakes for dinner.
Enjoy the weekend all.0 -
Tomorrow is when I'm going to try the aebleskiver pan out. It'll be interesting. I've never tried that before. Liike the waffle iron, it needs a gas stove...Since the kitchen range is electric, I'll be setting up the Coleman stove.

All these meals sound super great! Num.
Since I just had my exchange surgery, my friend brought over some delicious veggie soup for us to eat for lunch. I didnt admit that I was well enough to make a lassagna yesterday! Her soup looks delish. I will make some cornbread to go with it.
I wish I could send some California sunshine out to you all. But summer will be here- evantually!! It is still chilly up here in Northern CA, at night, but the daytime has been gorgeous. I am sending cyber-sunshine rays to those in cloudy spots today.0 -
Eric, please let us know how they turn out!
