SpecialK, the hunter's stew sounds very appetizing.  Especially when you added the pasta!  The crusty bread got my attention, too.

Bobo, the home-made fried rice sounds good.

Hope you FL folks stay safe.

Dinner tonight will be warmed-up stuffed peppers and fresh green beans, little purple ones that turn green when cooked.  I plan to steam them with a little chicken broth until they're tender crisp and the chicken broth is evaporated.  Just before serving I'll add a little olive oil and saute, then sprinkle on grated asiago cheese.  My favorite green bean recipe.  I also have cucumbers and yellow cherry tomatoes.  And...avocado!  For a salad.

Yesterday I picked up a friend's CSA veggies.  She is out of town and asked if I would like to use the veggies.  I said yes.  The veggies inclluded the purple green beans, yellow cherry tomatoes and small cukes.  Also some nice-sized green tomatoes.  I've been looking up recipes that don't involve frying the tomatoes.  Would welcome any recipes from our group.

For a month after my surgery our neighbors all signed up on MealTrain.com and we had dinner delivered 4-5 nights a week. It was soooo nice. On the evenings that it wasn't delivered we had plenty of left overs.

Now for chem my husbands coworkers all pooled a ton of $ and one of the gals who works for him calls a restaurant of our choice, places an order of what we would like for either delivery or pick-up.

    We are so very fortunate.

My Mom and I made a couple chicken dinners this week and felt out of sorts in the kitchen.

An easy one for the crockpot is salsa chicken:

4-5 chicken breasts in the bottom of pot; cover with 1 cup of salsa; 1 Tbl spoon taco seasoning; 1 can of cream of whatever you like soup (we did mushroom), undiluted; cook on low 6 hours; shred the chicken; stir in 1/2-1 cup sour cream; we added some black beans (rinsed and drained) too. We served it over rice and had some green onions as garnish and shredded cheese. Yummo.

Michelle- Your news makes me so happy!!!!  Congrats on the lowered counts and enjoy your stress free sleep tonight!

Special K- The stew sounds amazing!  I need to write it down.  Also Carol I want to eat your salad!  Everyone including Bobo and her fried rice sounds like some great meals!

My burgers and fries are almost done- besides a banana it will be the only thing I have eaten today.  I have had 2 glasses of wine and surprise my back is feeling better.  Maybe I should just stay drunk?  lol- kidding!

mcgis- Welcome!  You are very lucky to have such great friends!  I also was firtunate and a meal calander was started for me- we had dinners brought to us for 32 days in a row!  The original calendar was for 2 weeks but people kept signing up for days.  I felt so loved. Also, thanks for the recipe!  We are a great group of people here!  Welcome to the group of us.

    Hooray Michelle!  Happy dance.  :)

Carole, those green beans sound so good.  I love the attention you give to veg.  And I love avocado.  I eat it right out of the shell with a spoon.

    luvrving - yay!

carole - I just did a quick google search for oven fried green tomatoes - got a bunch - kind of like oven fried chicken.  Here is a link.  The bread is great with the stew because it is very tomato-ey so you can get the dregs with your bread!

    http://www.google.com/#gs_rn=16&gs_ri=psy-ab&suggest=p&cp=14&gs_id=1i&xhr=t&q=oven+fried+green+tomatoes&es_nrs=true&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&oq=oven+fried+gre&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47534661,d.dmQ&fp=467e174930821fde&biw=1280&bih=627

bobo - not too bad on the storm - a LOT of rain and some windy periods.  During Tropical Storm Debby we had a tornado in our neighborhood - took out a bunch of trees (we are on the preserve) and a bunch of the neighbors lost their pool cages (its a Florida thing for those not familiar) in their entirety!  A few had to have their roofs replaced.  That is the part of these storms that always scares me, epecially in light of the recent events in OK.  My DH's normal route home is closed due to flooding so who knows when he will make it home.  I did the stew in the crockpot but was a little worried about losing power.  I have a gas stove so I figured I could finish it stovetop if needed.

mcgis - you are very fortunate to have such nice neighbors and DH co-workers!  That is so great and your chicken dish sounds delish!

I never heard it called a pool cage!!  But that is exactly what they are... :)

The request for green tomato recipes reminded me of the pies Mom used to make from them. I googled and found a whole page full of 4 and 5 star rated recipes including ones from Paula Dean, "Betty Crocker" and Martha Stewart.  Mom called hers a mock apple pie and we preferred the tomato version.

    Great news Michelle!

Boo on the pain Laurie, you need to get that fixed!

Lots of good sounding stuff on here tonight. I got a huge bag of produce from my truck farmer friend - lots of lettuces, spinach broccoli and radishes, which is about all we have here yet. So tonight is chicken sausage with garlic and peppers, some Dreamfields pasta and sauteed spinach with garlic and olive oil. Did I say I love garlic? Good thing it's just the two of us here tonight!

Every surface in the kitchen has been vacuumed and washed. The inside of the cubboards are now spotless. All traces of "stickiness" is now gone. All the items in the cupboards have been put back in a logical place. Limited cooking utensils compared to my home, but she was a simple, county cook at heart. Cast iron isn't all that special, but there is a heavy metal, square pan that is brilliant! Found a 1951 Sunmaster Mixmaster, with all attachments, that works. It might have to come home with me though I never make cakes.

We are just about done with what we are being allowed to do, so will probably head home sooner than planned. Us Yankees just move at a different pace than folks here. No one can believe that it only took 2 days to check everything off the list.

Susan, it's going to cost you to get that mixmaster on the plane lol! My mom had one too.

No plane involved. We have a one-way car rental! Lots of portraits that need to make the trip north, and the sewing machine. Starting to think a little vacation in Ashville on the way home would be a nice, if expensive, distraction. That is where we honeymooned years ago and we could just not figure out a way to afford to make it our permanent home.

Michelle - congrats on the fantastic news. Doing the happy dance here for you.

Susan - Hope you rented a Crown Victoria or something with an enormous trunk. We did much the same when my father passed. He had many things he esp. wanted my husband to have as they shared the same hobby. So we rented a Crown Vic and the trunk was loaded. We went to St. Louis to his house and then on to Paducah to SIL so we needed something to conceal everything. Safe travels back.

Laurie - Hope your back is on the improving side. Pain that bad, I feel for you so much. Thank goodness for in-laws close by.

Dinner tonight is pork roast in the crockpot - dubbed Thai style, more like Asian with teriyaki. Need to find more stuff in crockpot or just give up eating dinner. Supposed to be 100 this weekend. Seems way too early. I used to be disciplined and cooked earlier in the day. Last night we had "Kara-Age" chicken. It's a Kikkoman coating and I fried chicken strips. Know why I don't fry stuff since I had to degrease the stove. They were quite good. I do have to roast more peppers bought on clearance b4 it gets too hot.

Nancy - I have found the queen of Nutella baking.  http://www.averiecooks.com/  Just for you!

Sorry Nancy. She's a current blogger. Post from today. She's also googleable (is that a word?). Seriously she has pages of Nutella recipes. I don't bake much and that's a good thing right now. Maybe not what you need right now since you're preparing for you upcoming appointment but couldn't resist sending it to you. There's always Christmas baking, right?

Is anyone watching the American Baking Competition on CBS on Wednesdays? My fix for the week since Dancing with the Stars is done for now.

I really don't cook with nutella, (although I did make some rugelach with it at Christmas), I just always have it or some Belgian chocolate butter on hand for that insatiable chocolate crave that I get occasionally. A couple of teaspoons of that on a cracker (or almond cookie!) Is more than satisfying.

Trying to catch up as we've been without internet for a couple days, there's SO much to read! For now, just a quick question: does anyone have a good recipe for tomato soup using fresh tomatoes? Had a bunch of tomatoes, found a recipe, but either it or I was wrong because it turned out awful! Craving a good homemade tomato soup. Thanks! Hopefully will get a chance to catch up later tonight (the repair guy totally messed up my schedule for today, but at least I can access BCO now!)

It's a really good recipe. Unfortunately, I have the most tomatoes in summer when soup doesn't appeal so much so I tend to make it in the fall with the last of the tomatoes. I wonder if it would freeze well. Probably. I'll have to give it a try.

I still want soup sometimes in summer, its a comfort food, I guess. Especially with grilled cheese sandwich! Went to a friend's house last year and her husband made the BEST homemade tomato soup! Had asked for recipe (nicely) but so response, guessing he's choosing not to share. I would think it's a form of compliment to share the recipe...

    Squash souffle sounds delicious.

Soup is winter or fall dish for me too.

Saw a photo of a tomato pie today in a magazine. It looked so good.

Dinner out tonight for dh's bday.

Carol- Happy Birthday to your DH!

2nd time- I agree tomato soup and grilled cheese yum!  I ate dinner at a friends and had the best homemade sauce a few years ago.  When I asked for the recipe I was politely told they do not share it.  Huh?  I don't get that.  I thought they were kidding at first, but no- it's a family secret.  I made the joke that I wish they had a dog I could ask  (Bush's baked beans.)

Nancy- Pork cutlets here tonight too with egg noodles and pea pods.  Yours sounds better though!

My pain is a little better.  Had a massage this afternoon- strangest massage ever.  All stretching and pulling.  I was like- can you just massage?  She explained she was trying to help.  We will see when I wake up.  Wine worked well last night so I am going for that again tonight.  Bruins are on again- praying for no OT and a solid win by the B's.  I can't stay up for a double OT again!

DH has to work tomorrow so I am hoping I am more myself and functioning.

    Hi everyone!

Deb- I am so very sorry about your Husband. I know this has been a rough year for you too with your losses. I am sending you big, big hugs and just know you are in my thoughts and prayers and  sending love your way!

Susan- Sorry about your MIL Hugs! I read the post about you mentioning your DB and it made me cry.

Michelle- I was so very happy to read about your TM going down, that is such great news I am so so happy for you!!

Laurie- Hope you get your back-back to normal again, Ouch! Sorry to read about your dear friend, in case I missed it how is she doing?  And thank-you so much for posting for me I really appreciate it a lot.

Minustwo-Sorry about your recurrance havn't read every page yet only read that part so hope you are doing well!!

    Moon-Sorry about your FIL.

Bedo- Someone mentioned somthing about your post so hope you are OK

Oh my gosh I know I have left so many people out, I just started reading from where I left off some time in March and went to some of april and that took me over an hour if not more, so then I started reading from the last one backwards to try to catch up read a few pages and realized I have about another 30-40 pages to catch up on. So Im very sorry if I missed anything or anyone, I will catch up though!  I had just read about Debs news and Michelles good news and had to come here to post. I think about you all, all the time but have just been so busy on the go in so many directions it was hard to keep up and with my grief I just thought if I stop and take a break, I would have a melt down. Not that I havn't already but you all know what I mean, you have all been there.I guess just too many things at once ,made me shut down or put a wall up not sure maybe both. I stayed strong in front of people but alone I was not good. Im rambling now I know!

Chuck Is doing somewhat better from surgery he is still recovering and not sure yet if it was worth it, he said it seems his dizzyness is better or didn't know if it was wishful thinking but when he went to PT he told him that he was a lot better that before surgery so thats a plus. We drive to Portland 2 times a week just for his PT so hoping that he will improve even more. When we drove to portland to get his staples out of his head I had mentioned that he had pain in his leg so they did a US on his leg and it came back showing he had a blood clot it was small but deep and they said those were the dangerous ones and could be deadly so they admitting him right away, started him on cumiden and also he had to have 2 shots a day in his stomach with something called lovenox, He was there for 8 days I had to stay in a hotel and was only prepared for 2 days because we always stay there when we have appointments because of the long drive. But it was actually nice to have that alone time to myself at night so I could really grieve the way I wanted to. Once home he had to give himself shots for 2 weeks and then they finally took him off of that. He will continue his cumiden for as long as needed, but all in all he is getting better (knock wood)

My dad was admitted to the hospital about the same time Chuck was released so we drove the 6 hours to Grants Pass where he lives and stayed there for a week. My dad was in there for 10 days he had to have 3 blood transfusions and didn't do well on the chemo so they had to stop it. He is home and on hospice now. I call him every day if we aren't there by his side.

Well, guess thats all for now except to say sorry I have nothing but dreary news to report. But I will start coming here more often to read and post updates and maybe even a good recipe. After all this is the dinner thread and I hate to turn it into any thing different. But I miss you all so much and reading some of the post made me realize how much I missed you and all the laughs I had here. You are like family to me, and I love you all.

OH and Seaside and Lacey, we have a birthday coming up girls shall we meet for drinks?? I wish! Isn't there someone else too whose BD is in June?

Chabba I will try to give you a call this week. I hope you are doing OK!
