Eric- You had me laughing with the image of your dog too!  Hysterical!!!

Bobo- I agree- go get yourself checked and big hugs to you.

I still laugh at my son coloring his face, I even laughed when he did it.  The maple syrup not so much....the kids is trouble with a capital T!!  My oldest never did crap like this?!  Headed to the lake for the weekend in about a 1/2 hour.  The weather does not look promising but the company does.  I love our friends cottage and the time we spend there.  The boys are super excited.  The car is all packed all I need is for DH to get home.

I agree- Susan where are you?  Hope all is well.

Carol- Love following you on your trip.  So glad you continue to post as you go along.

Well, there's nothing they do really for the uterus.  I hear it 'heals itself.'  I was thinking everyone was just pure crazy.  But then bedo confirmed it!  She said, I sure hope those dipsh*ts have not punctured your uterus.  When that happens, it feels like XXX.  And then I realized it is all probably true.  Note I didn't believe the doctor, but then did believe it once it was confirmed by bedo...

Laurie, it is so fun to go away to a cabin.  We just did it for my birthday.  But wow -- so much packing.  It was like we were going on an ocean voyage!

Carole, what I teach is totally not exciting.  Just where a student finds herself in relation to the societal aesthetic -- how that informs her ability to 'read,' to absorb information in research, and how it would inform her commentary.  And then I teach regular stuff, composition stuff.  I teach and tutor test types.  All of them, really, even the grad-level ones, but the LSAT.  That's how I was able to raise the kids and take care of them myself -- doing that tutoring "on the side."

I admire your travels!  Especially after the bum two weeks I've had.  You too, Luvmygoats!  Plus, I am super-excited about your goats.  I am not sure if I have ever mentioned it, but I love goats very much, and I have always wanted one, always.  Every time I come across one, I am just so happy.

Ditto on the hugs to you Deb. You seem to have done so well, but anniversaries just bring all the pain into focus. Hope you are able to take good care of yourself during this difficult time. Glad you posted....Peace to you.

Also love hearing about your traveling adventures, Carole.

Happy to learn that your trip went well, Michelle, and that you are safely at home.

Had a luncheon for my substitute today with two of our colleagues. For all the prep I did, it was pretty unspectacular. Made the white gazpacho with a different recipe than last time.....and am not sure I am crazy over any of the recipes I've tried....may just enjoy this at the local restaurant where I first had it and return to making regular tomato gazpacho. Anyway, I also made chicken salad with sliced almonds, pasta salad with lots of veggies, egg salad, and fruit salad. Pretty pedestrian! But one never knows the palates of colleagues you rarely eat with, (and it was too hot to cook much!) so I played it safe. Worked out fine....

One gal brought her two little toddler girls....adorable red heads with lots of energy and curiosity. They were a riot! I'm just sorry my house was cleaned yesterday instead of tomorrow ;)

We could have used Lacey the kiddie food catcher/cleaner upper. They were so entertaining....then they brought out the markers. Dodged a bullet there. Wondered if the white wainscoting was going to get a make-over. It didn't. :)

Bobo, glad to hear that your uterus will be fine. Hope you keep feeling better, faster and faster!

We head to the lake tomorrow, and hope for some sunny skies while there for several days.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

Susan are you out there??? Also thinking of you.
Oh for dinner, I finished the gazpacho soup and made DH a chicken parm sandwich with the kids' tenders that my colleague left in my fridge. Had not seen Frank Purdue in my house for years.

Debbie and Susan and all others that have been MIA  Kay?  I hope everyone is just having a busy and fun summer.

We are sooo stuck in a rain pattern here...my flowers are looking awesome, but i cant keep up with the lawn. And pretty much all boating has been on hold.

I have a load of kids coming for the 4th so it better clear up or the wineries are gonna have to get us our own bar stools, and we will have to settle in for the long weekend.

Had spaghetti and meatballs last night (DH request)  in the summer? really?  Oh well it hit the spot.  Trying to hold off on groceries till I have to prepare for the children.

    Eric95',

I'm new here. Can you tell me nowhere the recipe is for your sourdough starter? I've been thinking a lot about sourdough lately even though it's summer.

I'm out of active treatment 3 months now and learning to cook all over again (healthy).

    Thanks, Peggy

Peggy, I've been baking with sourdough for 40 years and have had to replace it for various reasons a few times.  I mix together a scant cup of water and a heaping cup of flour.  To give it a kick start I add 1/2 tsp yeast.  Cover with cheesecloth and leave it in a warm spot in the kitchen a week or two until it starts to smell sour.  You will want to have plenty of room in the container for expansion as it should at least double in volume during the process.  Store in the refrigerator between uses.  I keep mine in a tupperware type container at least 3 times the volume of the starter.

This time I took some unwashed grapes from the vine in the backyard, smashed them, added a pinch of sugar and a bit of chlorine free water....and let it set until it started getting frothy.  I then added some flour and water and the stuff is bubbling like crazy.

I'm up camping where there is no cell service except when we come to town...so I haven't baked any bread with it yet.  Maybe Monday....

oh, while the grape "juice is" working, I cover it with plastic wrap...and I strain the stuff out of the juice before I add the flour to the juice.....

    almost out of coverage.

Peggy, glad you're feeling good enough to get back to healthy cooking after your treatment.

Eric, what an interesting process with the grapes.

We went to the farmer's market in Detroit Lakes this morning.  Bought beautiful asparagus, very long spears.  The grower assured me the whole spear is good to eat.  Also bought new potatoes and pretty red radishes.  Frozen lamb chops.  Loaf of multigrain bread and a couple of cookies from a bakery called Breadsmith's out of Fargo.  People line up at this tent because the bread is beautiful, all kinds, and trays of cookies and scones.  Should have taken a picture with my cell phone.

Back at the rv park, I instigated a bike ride, stipulating that I did not intend to bike entirely around Big Detroit Lake, a distance of about 12 miles.  It was to be a mini bike ride to start getting my legs in shape for longer rides.  Well, we ended up doing the whole circle.  Very nice bike path.  It's the uphill grades that get me.  I have a new bike that really is nice and easier to pedal than my old bike.

Lunch was sandwiches using slices of the multigrain bread.

The lamb chops are thawing.  We'll have them and some of the boiled new potatoes and a salad for dinner.  I should have bought some fresh dill.  One farmer had a big bucket of it.

Lacey your assortment of salads sounds delicious to me.  I would happily have sat at your luncheon table.  I have not eaten white gazpacho.  What are the ingredients?

Laurie, I think of you and your dh camping with your children as I observe all the little kids playing in the children's area across from our site.  They are so cute and quite cautious of vehicles passing on the road.  There are quite a few families here this weekend.

We're enjoying the Wimbledon coverage on tv.

Hugs to everyone who could use a hug.

I'm making "7 minute cheese and prosciutto flatbreads" tonight. Ours will be cheese/salami flatbreads. Albertsons had Havarti cheese BOGO last week so we will have havarti rather than fontina on it. Should be quick/easy and not heat the house too much though actually my oven is well insulated. Can tell it is much cooler today; AC is not on almost constantly.

Michelle - glad you had a good trip.

Deborye - Wish I was there to give you a big hug!

Missing Kay and Bedo and Debbie.

Welcome Peggy. Glad you are feeling well enough to be interested in cooking again.

Bobo - I got some new pictures of my goats but DH is the techy person. Will try when he is off Mon/Tues to get some posted. I don't think they are on an outside source but he got my avatar on. That was my Nellie one of my sweetest goats ever.

I've been exercising with Christian Fitness on CTV. I need to get my recorder going and tape Gilad and yoga. It has been out of commission for sev. years. Got a new TV and never reprogrammed it. We don't have Tivo as main TV is ancient in an entertainment center bought for it. So no HD until it dies which it shows no signs of. But I did find a Miss Marple on the VCR I recorded (in 2010 no less) but never watched. Stayed up until 1:30 but finished it.

Carole - I too travel vicariously with you and your DH.

Tasty and easy way to cook fish- so far great with Tilapia or Cod; get a large ziplock bag and put 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and add garlic salt, lawry's, onion powder, and any other spices you like. Shake fish in zip lock bag to coat well, then heat up a splash of olive oil, garlic and lemon juice in a frying pan and then cook each side of fish for 4-6 minutes or until meat is flaky. My whole family loves it. I usually cook up zucchini or asparagus after the fish in the same pan cuz of the favors left behind give great flavor to the veggies too! Also serve with a salad and you have a healthy meal!

Tonight's dinner was a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.  The lamb chops we bought at the Farmer's Market were delicious and so were the tiny new potatoes.  The lamb was more per lb than I usually pay at home for American lamb.  It was $14 per lb.  But it was worth the $$.  DH grilled the chops perfectly.  If I had room in the freezer, I would have bought some ground lamb but the freezer is chockablock full.

    Welcome Peggy and Liz!

Lovely quote, Deb. Sending caring thoughts to accompany you on this unwanted but important journey.

Carole, did you marinate the lamb? I have been dying to grill lamb chops, but never see them on sale...so pricey!

    Came to NH today....

We had sandwiches at the Winnipesaukee Theater tonight before the show. DH had lobster roll, I had a grilled portobella with spinach and red peppers. It was exciting to see the beautiful new playhouse campus (on the former Annalee Dolls' site for anyone who comes to this area of NH) and larger theater. The play was a riot... Noises Off... and the acting superb.....and I'm not even a fan of farce.

Earlier today, I was very happy to find that our house looked exactly the same as we left it last October ....specifically no sign of any wildlife having made it indoors....am always amazed at this, and thankful! Carole, what is the purpose of wrapping your toilets when you leave home?

Luv, I thought of you when my trainer told me about a friend in Maine she was going to visit this weekend who has twelve goats....and several other animals, including pigs, on their property...I call that a farm. :)

    Oops, I forgot!

Carole, here's the recipe I loosely followed for my most recent attempt at white gazpacho. I have yet to try one of the ones that does not call for grapes.

Lacey, the white gazpacho sounds good.  The only "odd" ingredient (for me) is the green grapes.

We saran-wrap the toilets so that we don't have to ask someone to come in about once a month to flush the toilets.  Even with leaving the lids down, the water can evaporate and allow bad odors from the sewer pipes to get into the house.  This according to dh!  Of course, we leave the a/c running at about 82 during the summer.

Your lake house sounds so nice.

Tonight's dinner will be leftovers.  We still have spaghetti and the rice/pork sausage dish.

Tomorrow we move on to Pine Hollow, just a drive of about an hour and a half.

My parents alsways used to do the same thing when I was a kid.  I was probably 10 or 11, when we got home fro ma summer vacation and mom rushed in..forgetting about the plastic wrap.

We got home about 2 hours ago....At 8000 feet elevation, it was still in the 90F degree range.  Today is supposed to be around 115F (way upper 40C).

I pulled the new sourdough starter out of the refrigerator and will try it out tonight/tomorrow night.

Interesting thing about the toilets wrapped in saran wrap...and I can see that there might be more than one "dying to go" person who forgets about the saran wrap upon return from vacation. So, I think it must be a climate thing since we have never done that in the Northeast, and always have remaining water after nine months of inactivity in a house that ranged from 70 to 50 degrees (where we set the bathroom thermostat). I, being very " sensory", would definitely not enjoy returning to sewer aromas gracing my house after a vacation.

We actually had a nice beach day here today...but it was really hot and muggy for my long walk before heading to the beach. Now we are sitting on the porch listening to thunderstorms dancing around us. Love it! Just ordered veggie pizza and greek salad for dinner. DH would have preferred that we get lobster from the local supermarket sale, but we'll do that another night. Fast and easy is the key tonight. My allergies are so intense that I am taking the path of least resistence for everything...including dinner. I do need to see the allergist when I get home as my eyes are like slits and sooo itchy! And no benedryl for me while on the tamoxifen. Zyrtec seems to be of no great help. :( Of course being on a porch surrounded by weeping trees is probably not the greatest allergy minimizer. ;)

Amazing all that heat out west! Keep cool, western sisters and brother!

  • Laurie08

Eric- I could never stand that heat.  I HATE to be hot.

Lacey-  Yuck on the allergies, I hope you find some relief.  Today did turn out beautiful!  We were on the same page, ordered a pizza and had left over salad from the weekend.  I am exhausted.

The weekend ended up being wonderful despite the fact that the weather man said rain all weekend- it did not rain on us and we had mostly sunny skies the whole time.  I even got a bit of a sunburn.  We came back tonight just before dinner time and we are all very tired.  We should all sleep good tonight I think.  We have all had a shower/bath and I put clean sheets on our bed and I am looking forward to sleeping in it!  We had simple food all weekend and extra friends came by Saturday.  One brought an anti pasta salad which was wonderful, another a pesto mushroom salad.  We enjoyed the left overs all day today and still had things to bring home.  I feel very thankful for my friends and family tonight.  It was relaxing, no fighting amongst the boys, the kids running free while the adults laughed and chatted.  Wonderful.

Hugs to everyone especially you Deb.

Lacey, have you tried zaditor (ketotifen) for your eyes? It really helps if you use it regularly.

  • luvmygoats
    luvmygoats Member Posts: 2,484

Or Lacey another suggestion by my optometrist is Alaway allergy eye drops. They're OTC and really help when my allergies act up. Sounds very similar to Nancy's Zaditor.

Laurie - sounds like a wonderful weekend.

We had 5 cheese tortellini that dairy case was clearing out. Pretty good but I would not have paid retail price for them. DH likes plain old spaghetti just fine but he liked these too. Still have not made the bean flatbreads. Maybe one day for lunch with DH off for 2 days. Might carmelize some onions to go on them. The recipe calls for roasted salted almonds. Don't know about that. Might make some with/some without.

Carole - I too find grapes in soup different. Hummm???

Thanks Nance. My eye doc suggested that a couple of months ago when I had my yearly eye check and the eye allergies were starting. I used it for about a month daily with not much luck.

So why does Tamox impact me big time and these allergy meds act like sugar stuff!? I am currently hating pharm! I learned from one of my docs that the Tamox and its effect on my estrogen leaves me more prone to allergies....and I think many people in my area of the country have had a lot of allergies this year anyway....so....bad combo. My dermatologist offered me a steroid cream for my eyes, but I thought I could manage with the zaditor, so declined. Silly me! Shades of last year's radiation, I am swabbing my eyes with aqua phor since my eyelids and skin below my eyes are so red and sore.

Laurie, glad you had such a wonderful weekend. Loved that pic of the kids walking through the ferns.

Lacey- It was funny.  DH was bound and determined to take a hike.  Me and DS1 said- uh- no we are staying on the beach.  DS2 was all excited and so were a few of our friends so a few of them left for a hike while a few of us stayed back and enjoyed the lake.  To me it was too hot to go for a hike in the woods!  But they had fun and so did we.  Also, love aquaphore and use it daily!

Thanks too, Luv...sadly, I think I'm prescription bound for this eye allergy problem.

I used the recipe with the green grapes in it was because that was one of the ingredients in the white gazpacho we had at The Farmhouse restaurant last week. It lends a sweetness (and acidity?). Somehow, that appealed to me, and he other recipes seemed like a plain cuke soup.
