Patty, glad to see you posting here and on your page. You are a shining example of grace, strength and courage.

Jaymeb, what you describe happens in the Catholic high schools as well. DS was in our parish grade school and started at an all boys school in 7th grade. They had their problems. The school went co-ed his junior year. I would hear stories of the food fights the boys would have at lunch time. I told son his junior year if he heard a low rumble that eventually got louder to hit the deck because the girls were about to get into a fight. First time it happened he came home and told me I described it to a T. Between junior and senior year, DS had a summer job and didn't go on vacation with us. Some boys showed up at a house and barged in on him. Yup, they brought alcohol with them. I had this funny feeling come over me and called home. I was assured nothing went on. Arrived home a few days later and the minute I walked into the house I knew something wasn't right. Living room was ok, dining room was ok but something seemed different. Kitchen had the cup missing from a milkshake maker and I was missing the utensil holder to my dish rack. Ah ha, that's what was different in the dining room. On of the idiots melted the holder onto something that was in the dining room. Wasn't a lot but it's what caught my eye. Went to the basement and the fire extinguisher had been set off at the ceiling. Old tiles that are no longer made. I had to get very creative in replacing them. Well we had a nice talk and he got grounded. I would refer to them as "your friends" and by the end of summer he asked me not to say that because they weren't his friends anymore. It was a hard learned lesson for him, that he should have called the neighbors or the police to help him get them out of the house. DDs went to an all girls Catholic high school. Plenty of drinking went on there. One girl had to be taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. Some of the private high schools here whether denominational or not have plenty of problems. There were other problems as well. Never fails that at the beginning or end of a school year or at prom time that a carload of students has had a fatal car crash where alcohol or drugs weren't involved. Hope this makes you feel better in the sense that it can happen in any type of school be it public or private. Just keep your antenna on high alert.

Mags, love the new house. I drooled and almost shorted out my keyboard, LOL. First thing I noticed on the outside shot of the house was the wood between the windows making a cross. Had a fleeting thought that it was a parsonage. Hope all is going smoothly for you.

Sensi, so sorry to hear about Chance. I cried my eyes red the day we lost our last dog when I lived at home. Went into work the next day with them swollen and pink. One of the bosses asked me what happened. I was embarrassed to tell him but he got it out of me. Told me there was nothing wrong to cry over a pet because they were just as much a part of my family as any human being was. That put things in a new perspective for me.

Wrenn, how did your daffodils hold up in the snow storm you had?

Junie, wish I lived closer to you so I could come over with my pruning and loping shears to take care of that hydrangea for you. Hope you are feeling better. If you complained to the state, would they come take a look at that hospital in your town and get them to shape up? No one should have to put up with that.

Shep, how is Miss Ellie doing? She looked so peaceful in the picture where she on the couch. I know, looks can be deceiving.

Sas, time to buckle down and do some serious research for a new computer.

Lover I think it's wonderful you get together with the Sacramento ladies. How's your dad? School going well for your DDs.

    Hi to all I've missed.

Ok, I've done it again and have written a novella.

    Oh Patty ~

Weren't you the Ambassador of Essex? I vaguely remember having been there once or twice..... Still waiting for you to share those travel pics of all the tours you bragged about. 😜

I saw on your thread the nurse was holding back on the meds you needed. Grrrrr... I've learned the hard way to stash my meds in my purse, phone case, computer bag and toiletry case and take 'em on the sly. If it's on your chart, it's on your chart! Only your doc can make decisions to make changes Glad your MO has your back and stepped in!

    Sensi ~

I haven't been brave enough to watch Chance's Tribute. I will and I will shed more than a few tears; tears of happiness for the bond you shared and tears of sorrow for loss I know you feel. Ah, our pups were both year round shedders. They will always be with us. 💗 (don't tell anyone - I found a perfect tuft of blonde Marti tail fur hidden in the shoe closet. It is sealed away with her other mementos now) No other dogs could ever compete with our true loves..... especially a gd incontinent Bloodhound.

Mags ~ Chit. Your MO has done good by you. Prayers for him to have the wisdom to "fix" you again.

Miss Blue ~ I am eagerly awaiting a delivery from Amazon. It's a book you'd surely enjoy....stories about a lady and her pet skunks and her giant sad eyed black pup 😊

    Yay! Sassy is online again!

    Loverly is being good......hmmmmm.

    Junie stop getting run over!

M0mmy ~ Stay nice n' snuggly warm with your very dear DH 🔥 (fireplace NOT house fire!)

Love to all and fervent prayers for us each to be free of pain and fear so we can live, love, and laugh until we are so very, very old that folks will laugh with us for being so full of joy (and mischief!)

JayNC ~ You asked awhile back where in SC I am....look below! Sorry didn't get back sooner. Ooooh the Owlies are slacking. Can't believe no one changed your name yet!

My BFF was here in Myrtle Beach for almost an entire week! Here's some pics he took....The amusement park is across from the ocean with foot bridges crossing the swash :)

Shep. How beautiful. Wow. Can’t show my Essex trip pics on line. Might get me in trouble. 😜

Yes yay sas. Our expert leader. No sarcasm.

Patty - maybe you could share some travel brochures you picked up on one of your many visits? Or at least some advice on what to pack should one of us be ever so lucky to actually visit Essex? You know, helpful things like a toothbrush, bottled water, comfortable shoes, duct tape - I prefer electrical tape, less sticky residue ....all those things you might need but might forget. Sassy brought a walker once. Or was it after she got back?

    😋

Shep~ Well one of us has to be good. Who in the world brings those to.....oh never mind. I forgot how much you packed on the 3-day mini vacation. This very much reminds me of that day.

Ok. Maybe, minus a few packages. I am not exaggerating, ladies. Ms. Sas, can testify. Junie was almost as bad. I think I remember seeing a ceiling fan or was it a space heater in one of her luggages.

We had a high school party one time. DS was a sophmore. It was interesting. DH and I were on the premises, but out of site. Many parties that night. Apparently, some parties had boose/ beer. We didn't. The HS Quaterback choose to stay to DS's party as did others. Others left because of no boose. Ds was very happy about that outcome, as it gave him some status that the QB stayed at his house..............long ago memory lost till this writing. I wonder now what happened to that QB. I know what happened to DS. I do remember being immensely happy that the choice of those that stayed was based on the fact that no boose was available.

One story DS told me many years later was he was at a party in the local community, and there was drugs----he told me that the person that was the GUY that was in charge said something to the effect-"Leave him alone , he's going to make something of himself."., I wonder now what happened to him. .

JayNC, I like that! Maybe JNC to save space?

DD2's school and the adjacent middle school (public) had a lock down on Wednesday for nearly 2 hours. Apparently, a girl overheard a boy telling another boy that he has a gun he brought a gun to school that day. The girl immediately went to the security guard and told him. Teachers were alerted and the police were called in. DD said that there were many officers on campus searching bag packs of students who fit the description. No gun was found. Thank God. Hope it was just a prank as it was finals week, but you never know. We have 2000+ kids at these 2 schools.

Kath, I think that's the first time I see you wrote a novel. Hah! Oh the things that kids do. Your poor boy. We thought about sending our kids to private school when they were younger too, but glad we didn't. The school that was built near our home is a pretty good school. One of the top in our area. We saved $$ instead to help the girls with college.

Dad had his post-op follow up appointment two weeks ago. I really like the urologist. Very thorough and took time to explain the pathology report. Feline is right, the way they stage prostate cancer is different from BC. He is stage 3. He did have a few cancer cells on the capsule of the prostate. The urologist took extra surrounding tissues and quite a few lymph nodes and they were all clean. PSA went down from 10.3 to .05 four weeks post-op. So....no radiation or hormone therapy. I hope the PSA continues to go undetectable. Dad is recovering quite well. Minor leaking which is to be expected with prostatectomy. His doctor is happy with Dad's quick recovery. Thank you for asking about DadHug

Ms. Sas, you did a great job with DS.

DH is flying out to Nepal shortly for a medical mission for 3 weeks. They lost 2 doctors and a nurse from the team, but gain 1 new young doctor and a nurse. Rough trip last time. Hopefully, not as bad this time.

Getting drowsy and I still need a shower before I can hit the sack. Night nigh

Loverly what does that mean "They lost 2 doctors and a nurse from the team, but gain 1 new young doctor and a nurse. Rough trip last time" ?

The two doctors and the nurse decided not to join the team this time. Trips to Nepal is never easy on folks from affluent countries. Can’t carry the comforts of life with you.Rough and dangerous terrain plus possible dysentery issues are not easy to deal with. Also, carving out 3weeks from job is a challenge.

Oh before I forget, has anyone had cataract surgery? Got my prescriptions in the mail today and noticed that I have to use the antibiotic drops for two weeks, which I can see (no pun intended), but the drops for pain and inflammation for six weeks, which I think is overkill. On top of that the two usually aren't used together unless your doctor thinks otherwise, hmm. I've been through some perfect storms with some medications lately causing some very bad swelling in my lower legs and feet and looking back over the past year I think it had been brewing since November, 2017. Worried that this could happen between these two eye drops and don't want to take a chance with my eyes. Have mild retinopathy in my right eye that required a shot prior to the cataract surgery to keep it from getting worse because surgery to the eye can cause that to happen. Did you have to use the drops for pain and inflammation for that length of time. (Kicker is that it can cause eye pain. Go figure. I know not everyone gets the SEs but I don't like what I see that can happen. Can we say I've become gun shy about trying new meds.)

Loverly, thanks for the thought that I did a great job with Stephen, I was the truly the rock which isn't necessarially(sic) good., His father was the master of all good things. I was intense on all things. Greg was an amazing personable guy. My standard description of Greg was he could learn a persons life history on an elevator ride. Greg was a nice guy. Lacked intensity. Not saying that was a negative at all. I always was amazed. I guess that helped Steve in both ways. He has intensity in his work, but his fathers socialable nature. Plus, we had my Mom live with us for 13 years. Gertie was also, unique.

She died at 89, but whenever there was a gathering of family, she was always surrounded by the young teens and young adults. She was so sharp at cards. It was a hoot. Trivial Pursuit, we'd all fight for her as a team member when we played it in the 80'-90's. Gertie was special. Everyone wanted to be around her didn't matter the setting. The term "Irish eyes are smiling" was Gert. But mess with her kids, she'd get her ire up.

Really, Stephen grew up with three parents, in the sense that Gertie lived with us for 13 years. So, he gathered from 3 people. Plus, his amazing childcare mom in the first six years was Cheryl. She was a beyond belief a good woman. I could write paragraphs about Cheryl

Stephen will never know how exceptional his life was, until he tries to recreate for his own kids---if they come.

Kath, I had cataract surgery on one eye. I had one eye drop for a couple of days and another for about 10 days. I would question the doctor and mention your concern that they aren't usually used together. If he had reasons that's one thing. If it's a slip up, you've caught it.

  • kathindc
    kathindc Member Posts: 1,667

Thanks Wrenn. Appreciate your input and glad for a second opinion on the two drops being used together. When I read that about the two, I thought WTHeck! Will call his office Monday and ask about that and why so long on the one for pain and inflammation. That last one makes me question having my other eye done. if it weren’t for the fact I like driving I wouldn’t have scheduled this but the glare is very bothersome. I’ve taken to finding routes with one way streets for night driving to cut down on the amount of time I have to deal with oncoming cars, LOL.

Kath, That's clever. I never thought about taking advantage of one way streets.

Daffodils did great in the cold snap. Right now they're taking over the front yard. I enjoy the view.

Shep - You really ordered it?! Let me know what you think of the final chapters where the history of Jesus comes in.

Lover of Life - LOL That is quite a load. Shep packs like that? I always have this dream of traveling, one month here and three months there and so on. All over North, Northeast. Cottages, cabins. I too would pack like that even if the places were furnished. I am a nester. So I think Shep must be a nester. And Junie pushing it to being a nester if not full fledged already.

People - I just ate 6 sliced peaches w some cottage cheese. And now I am eating half a sandwich. Why? Because 3 nights ago I chose to forego the aromasin. hmmmm Been sicker and weaker for weeks now, barely able to sit upright in a restaurant, too weak to open bathroom door..... and now I know why. It all runs together. So I see my oncologist Tuesday and we will hav to come up w a plan. My qol has to be the priority.

Wonderful experience - last weekend we went to a buffet - when I needed out of the bathroom had to knock on door so Hubby who was waiting outside door could get me out, heavy wooden door. Instead a young woman and her little girl knocked back at me then opened the door for me. Second trip to the bathroom, I went in the room and of the two stalls the handicapped was occupied. I had not thought of that problem. But this wonderful young woman came rushing in and called to her daughter, Dixie, did you start peeing yet? Daughter answered, no. The lady had her use the smaller stall, told her to always use the little stall. And I was able to go in handicapped side then. I thanked her so much for noticing and caring. Was refreshing.

Wren, daffodils are more of a cold/cool weather flower. I’ve found with mine that if they bloom when we are having higher than normal temps and the sun is bright they don’t last as long. Only thing to worry about when you get snow when they’ve bloomed is the intensity of the sun afterward. Sun and the reflection of the sun off the snow shortens their life quite a bit.

Lover, I see you’re up to mischief again

That is nice. I'm pleased when a young person offers me a seat on the bus, especially if they're sitting in the spots for seniors and disabled. I take them up on the offer and thank them profusely.

Last night on the bus I was seated across from a neighbor I don't see very often. We were both eyeing the other and trying to decide if she was the neighbor or not. When we got off at the same stop, we started talking about it and laughing.

Kath, I found an interesting article for you. Hope the directions for the steroid drops is a taper one.

Yeah, DH is a work in progress ( as I am) by the grace of God. He went to Costco and bought eggs, milk, fruits, and bread for us days before. He worries that we will run out of food. Hah! I reassured him that I haven’t forgotten how to drive to the stores. He is good most of the time. I think I will keep him. Thank you for the prayers.

The girls are doing well in school. DD is in Southern Cal at a swim meet, so it’s just DD2 and I home yesterday and today. DD is still not sure if she wants to study kinesiology as she hates Calculus and Physics (probably “weeding classes”). Math is not her strength. Doing well in Anatomy and Physiology, which by the way has one third less students than when they started. She likes writing, history, and psychology. Will see where she is heading. I know definitely not business like her dad.

Blue, I guess you are right....Shep is a nester. She packed breakfast items, water bottles, tea, utensils, you name it, she probably had it. Bless her heart for thinking about us. I would love to visit Northeast during autumn one of these days. BTW, I am still waiting for the PM from you regarding your book. I guess I can ask Shep for the title. Now you make me even more curious.

QOL is important. Love it when people show their love/compassion with actions rather than words. The moms at the restaurant indeed were teaching their girls a valuable lesson. I still can’t believe what your friend said to you about salvation. I am sure she thought she was helping.

Ok, got to get my lazy bum up and start cleaning. Hair hair every where. Good thing we only have one Mitzy. Always ready to play ball.

Lover, thank you so much for the article. It did answer a question I had. Definitely need to read it again. It has raised some other questions which I will address on Monday. No tapering on the steroid drop and I've read that being on it 1-3 weeks shouldn't be a problem to stop abruptly and in the next sentence it said after several weeks you should taper. I'm on that prescription for 1 drop four times a day for 2 weeks Much appreciate you taking the time to find this for me. I'm at the point that I want to delay the second eye surgery to at least six weeks after the first to make sure there are no adverse effects. Right now I have it scheduled for four weeks later.

I guess I might not be a nest maker. I was a travel agent for 20 years and pack carry on only. The only trip where I've taken more was to Russia in December when I did need more room for all the sweaters. DH takes everything he might need, eg,. 5 coats to visit our son in Oregon for the weekend. At least we're in a car then. My theory is to take one coat and something warm to put under it if it gets colder. If it gets warmer, I can take off the coat and wear just the warm layer. Of course, I could probably get the coffee into my carry on. Can't function without it.

Kathy, I envy you gettting the cataracts done. My doc keeps saying "Not yet". I can't drive at night. Colors are getting worse. The one take away from Moms cataracts. Was she was prescribed macrodantin post op. She said her eyes felt prickly after 24 hours. I held the drops and got her in right away. Of course, she was having a reaction that was considered unusual. But continuation could have caused much more serious problems. SOOOO, if you question anything. Hold and call with direct answer from the doc , not the nurse. So, hope you are enjoying the colors with the one eye. Then when both are done let us know :) Good Luck :)

LOverly, Nice update on the girls. A&P is simple memorization. But it's allot of memorization. The physiology is perhaps more difficult because it's about how things work. I liked it and thought it quite fun. Easier when you think it's fun. There is an old book that might be available on Amazon. "Studying and Testing" Standford University Press. Written I think in 1940. Subsequent printings, but discontinued maybe in the 60's-70's. The precepts are as valid today as then. I first received it from my SIL. for use with my Paramedic students. It's the nuts and bolts of how to approach both. i.e the mechanics of studying in a reproducible manner. Even though she has been a highly successful student, the books approach may have value for her when a subject seems much tougher for her. Did wonders for my students.

Best to Hindrik and praying for a good mission.

LOverly,Mitsy has turned into quite a handsome dog. I forget what the vet thought of genetic origins. Certainly some hound. Like a sight hound of ancient Egypt. She definitely has a beautiful confirmation vs genetic soup. Would it be too much to ask for a pic of her when she first came home to you. I remember her as being very skinny. She looks soooo healthy. Please, also, the story why you choose her. Has her anxiety abated? MY two are making me nuts with allergies. They love rolling in the grass. Grass has the yellow pollen from the trees. etc. Donnie washed both this weekend. I think a weekly bath will be good.

    Hi Ladies

Still up at 4:30, and eating junk food. Mostly Girl Scout Cookies. Daughter has been in Scouts since a Daisy. I've always loved to eat, and I lost my appetite after my mascectomy, but not for long. While doing radiation, and even when I finished, I did not want ANYTHING. I was so happy, I lost weight. Then, I started to think oh, no, do I have a reoccurrence? Loss of appetite and fatigue were my only symptoms of radiation.

Well, I've been on Tamoxifen for a year, and I crave sweets all the time. I eat a good, healthy breakfast, then it's junk food. I can eat a box of those GS cookies in five min, and I do. I was wondering if anyone of you has, or is taking Tamoxifen, and did it increase your appetite? What about weight gain? I have really put on pounds, and I'm 5ft 1 inch tall, so it shows much more. Grrrrrrrrrr😂😂😂😂

    Kath

Thank you for sharing your story about your son's years at a catholic school. I have to say, I thought it was funny too. When you said you were on vacation without him, you didn't feel all at ease. Yep, that weird feeling something is up. And I think that inner feeling, or intuition is always right. Did your son think you wouldn't know? The fire extinguisher was the kicker. Lord have mercy🙄🙄🙄🙄. More important, I think your son learned a lesson.
In the triad of NC, there's six Catholic schools from pre K - 8th grade. We have only one Catholic high school. The whole school is maybe 400 students, less than what Reece has in her 9th grade class.

So, I'm going to take a deep breath, and stop arguing with my exhusband to put her back in private school. He tried to tell me all along that alchohol, drugs, anything that goes on in a public happens in a private schools. So your post was very much appreciated. How many sons, and daughters do you have? Are they in college, or are they finished with their education? Also, how are your cataracts doing? Are your eyes better?

    Loverly

Do your daughters like school? Are they both in high school? Well, I think one is because she's the same age as my Reece's pieces(nick-name). Ninth or Tenth grade? Is one in college? Any sons? A good point, money is needed more for college. Was it you that told me some young girl got alcohol poison? You probably told me, how did she get access? Come to think of it, probably not that hard. Sigghhh. Your daughters seem smart, and have a good head on their shoulders. When it comes to our kids, their foundation has to come from their home environment. Thanks for your input as well.

Oh, now am I hallucinating, or did someone mention a sub was at her school, and students were actually throwing desks, and hitting? I think that was a TaRenee. Am I right, and you teach? If you told me before, I apologize. I try to remember everything.
