Well - my SIL knows everything and I haven't had any luck explaining the facts.  It is total knee replacement.  Tweaking has been going on for years & there's nothing left to tweak.  She has docs here at the med center in Houston and Medicare would pay for the whole thing, but I guess it isn't special enough.  Sigh.  I hope she'll decide she has something better to do with $17,000 than have surgery in Chicago.

yeah. You can't beat sense into her! My D SISTER had a bad replacement 5 ops! The last Dr did it right, but she has had it pop out of place 2x already and had to be put out to fix it. This doc is trying to help what the 1st doc screwed up so bad. She has to I mobilize her leg now. I pray it works because if it pops out again they go back in. BTW at my Sis 2nd op we told her to get a different doc. She didn't listen. Sigh

@ Moonflwr912  Oouuuch! Thanks for sharing such dramatic photos with us. How long do you have to keep the the bandages on? Not much room to roll away. Then what when you can't take the bandage off? No need to answer. I am just emphasizing this is no little matter. Don't know what I would do.

SALTWATER: If you find the energy and time, would you please give us the recipe and how you figure out using saltwater without getting the bandaged area wet.

    Am pulling for you!

@ MinusTwo and Moonflwr912 re QUICK KNEE SURGERY CLAIMS

I just bumped some key that deleted what I had written mmmmmmmmmm

Desperation + Bull Headiness = YUP! A recipe for disaster.

Since your SIL is coming to Chicago and I live here, I called a friend who has more experience in dealing with scams and possible scams.

I assume your SIL has at least checked with the Better Business Association about the surgeon to see if there have been any complaints.

How did your SIL learn of his practice such that she is not hesitant to drop what her local doctors are presenting AND the total coverage by Medicare? Furthermore, Houston, TX, is a big city which affords no little pool of surgeons. I mean she can't claim to be in desparation because being located in a desert of medical expertise and availability. Me thinks the scenario doesn't come across as very positive.

    >>> Anyway, I learned of 2 other investigative ethical resources that pertain to Chicago but that have equivalents in most if not all states. I also learned that these organizations are recommended as basic tools for researching a person or organization BEFORE making a decision in addition to their obvious role in receiving complaints after the fact.

Here are the Internet links. I suspect MinusTwo that you will take the initiative as far as contacting these departments for info ASAP, particularly the first one. Of course, it may turn out that there are no complaints listed and the party is still not trustworthy given the dynamics of the situation.

I hope you can get through to someone by phone without too much trouble (bias against government bureaucracy speaking).

#1 ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL & PROFESSIONAL REGULATION   http://www.idfpr.com/ note the contact sub-link  http://www.idfpr.com/

@ guests As this is a public discussion, feel free to input.

Also hope you, yourself, MinusTwo are doing OK.

    LOL

Trickling - thanks for the info & the links.  Don't know how my SIL originally heard about the procedure, but the doc she's looking at gave a presentation here at one of the country clubs.   Anyway - I think it's Rush Clinic.  I came up with this link that describes something about the surgery - and it does say you go home the next day.

Oh Trickling - sorry I forgot to say that I'm doing OK.  Finished except for Herceptin every 3 weeks for the rest of the year and some testing.  Side effects are minimal.  My MO is retiring the end of the year & I'm devastated to think of starting in a new relationship.  He is the best.  Thanks for asking.  And how are you?

##1 = RUSH is a very well respected medical institution, MinusTwo. The description is remarkable and I am impressed. I notice basic parameters including weight qualifications.

    >>> No need to reply but here are some of my thoughts after reading your link.

?? After reading the link you discovered and from what you know of the condition of your SIL are you any more comfortable with her decision?

?? Is her trip to Chicago to meet with the RUSH surgeon for actual evaluation rather than to commit herself?

?? Have her local physicians disagreed with this as a realistic option given their evaluation of her condition?

I hope you will update us as this operation is still a major undertaking and the investigation and preparation dynamics would be applicable to other surgeries as well.

##2 = In reply to your health question. As far as my cancer: I have not been undergoing treatment for a long time and as far as I know am OK. As far as my allergy to adhesives (a disaster waiting to happen): my intent to re-test many of the samples of tape is on indefinite hold. I have what looks like an aggressive outbreak of eczema pretty extensively over my right shoulder (front and back). I never had such a thing before. Also,I think I must have some kind of splinter in my right heel since the day before the Fourth.

I am due to see my new primary care physician August 22, who as far as I know is completely booked. I made an unannounced trip to the office to see if a nurse practitioner could take a look at my heel. The location on my heel is not somewhere I can examine. I bought a folding - ooh la la - cane to use when I go out and about. Very nice to be able to place it in a bag when I am on the bus.

When I arrived, I was informed there was no one that could see me and admit to just leaving because the receptionist - albeit in kind tones - appeared to be giving me a spiel about not having staff. I will phone later this week to inquire in more detail. I am trying to brace myself in the event I learn that appointments are at best difficult. Perhaps I am spoiled because my previous HMO set-up was within my hospital and the department had nurse practitioners. Ironically, my new HMO doctor's office is directly across the street from the participating hospital. I have no intention of joining the bandwagon for the Emergency Room as a catch-all.

Trickling - sorry for the new PCP run around.  I have a new one too and don't yet know what hoops I will have to jump through if I need to see someone for a "condition".

Love the folding cane.  I bought one when I planned my cruise to Alaska.  Unfortunately the cancer recurrence put the kibosh on that trip & then I "lost" the damn cane.  Funny that I finally found it exactly where I would have kept it if I hadn't been suffering from chemo brain.

I had eczema as a kid - mostly on the insides of my elbows.  I remember it itching horribly.  Hope you get some relief soon.

    Just checking in :-)

@ MinusTwo  Ha! I already ALMOST lost my folding cane.

I love rosemary potatoes. This woman has some great tips. Sigh - how does Laura stay soooo thin.  Surely, no one can eat just one!

Well, the BC board didn't accept the link.

mmmmmm It is after all dangerous in the sense that the recipe is soooooo yummie.

Ergo: plug in these words into the search on YouTube (I was not able to copy/paste the following even by doing a Word document as an intermediary):

Trickling - I watched the Roasted Rosemary potato recipe demonstration.  Yummy.  I'll have to get some potatoes.

My lumpectomy and lymph nodes incisions are well healed from my July 3 surgery. But the blisters from the adhesive are taking longer. Ouch. I am allergic to the hypoallergenic tape, too. Docs and hospitals know it and did their best, but nothing seems to work for me. Good luck!v

madeditor - will you be doing Herceptin?  If so and you have a port, make sure they use Aplicare or Cavillon skin protectant wipes on the skin before they place the patch holding the 'tails'.  It's made all the difference for me.

My BFF is bringing me some Medipore to try. Her DH died 3 weeks ago & she has a large case. I usually use Hypafix but I think I had Medipore in a hospital once.

Also she's bring some Cavillon. It's applied before any tape as a barrier. I also had that in the hospital once so we'll see if it still works.

JJ - great batch of bumps.

Just an update that I am apparently NOT sensitive to Kinesio tape for lymphadema. I had some on for 3 days and never an itch or red skin. This is great news since this taping really seems helps my truncal LE swelling.

Happy for you Minus! Keep that LE down!

Thanks Moon. Kineskio tape update -

The Kinesio tape does seem to help with the lymph drainage for my truncal LE. However the tan color tape won't stick on much more then 24 hours, while the black color tape stayed on as long as a week. Weird. I do seem to have an issue with a wide strip of tape applied under my arm front to back to help stretch the scar tissue from my ALND surgery & radiation fibrosis. Once the PT applies the tape, it appears that I need to leave it on 4 or 5 days to get the maximum benefit. After a or two it does cause some irritation to my skin. It actually 'abrades' the skin when removing even if I softly roll it off in the shower. Sigh. I guess I'll continue to use it sporadically since it has helped me to finally have full range of motion with that arm again, but not more than every couple of weeks.

I still swear by Hypafix or Medipore tape for all other bandaging purposes. I always carry my own roll in the car. Hospitals usually have it in stock, but not often doc's offices.

3M or Opsite Flexifix-? My daughter is on an insulin pump and sensitive to tapes and she is trying the Flexifix. She did not have trouble with the 3 M but the Flexifix comes in a roll.

My surgeon apparently is going to put glue on my wound with no bandages. I am worried about the glue!

WIndingShores - I had glue with my original bilateral mastectomy and again after reconstruction w/implants. It worked very well for me both times. I was VERY pleased.

Let us know how the Flexix works for your DD. Medipore & Hypafix both come in rolls.

My surgeons used glue and dressings held in place with my compression bra and wraps. Adhesives turn me red with hives.
