Adhesive TAPE - help need to find non-allergic

Ladies: I've posted this before, as has Trickling - but for those who are new - ask for a skin protectant before docs or nurses apply tape. I even have them do it for port access at infusion center.
I've had really good luck with APLICARE SKIN PROTECTANT PREP PADS. Tear open & apply to clean dry skin & allow to dry before applying bandage. Unfortunately they don't sell directly to the public, but the rep I talked to thought maybe we could talk our docs or our pharmacies into ordering it. You can see it on line at www.aplicare.com
Another one I haven't tried yet is CAVILON NO STING BARRIER CREAM. A friend is supposed to bring me some samples next time she comes to town.
Don't give up!!!

@ Pessa WELCOME! Wishing you luck with your recovery. Would you consider listing (with a few particulars) what you tried using - albeit without success? Also, try to include any positive or negative interactions with staff. Really, it is a big help to learn of these things for a multitude of reasons and for new and old visitors to this thread. Keep trucking!

@ MinusTwo Do you remember what tape helped you for at least a little while? I think it started with the letter "M' and was the tape that GramE discovered and with which she had success?
*** BTW, the reference to the letter "M" prompts me to share a FUN link or two of my favorite links to MELLO M
** 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10fto4b8WPA
** 2) This link not only includes each and everyone playing their hearts out but my style of a Conductor - I certainly don't envision myself being able to conduct in a more restrained fashion. For the record: I neither play an instrument nor conduct - sigh. Just saying if I did . . .Hee Hee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k5bTQ8y0eA
@ GramE Hope you are doing okay and staying warm
@ EVERYONE Even though I will not be re-testing a bunch of the products I have accumulated until my mandatory HMO insurance has me switched to a new hospital, I will try to pitch in with keeping this thread going.

>>> INVITATION & QUESTION to old and new visitors to this thread <<<
?? What do you think of dividing up this thread into short sections over stipulated periods of time and having folks view those sections during their stipulated periods and simply post what they found particularly helpful? They/we could simply copy/paste the applicable content into this 2014 NEW YEAR.
?? Any other ideas or suggestions?

TAPE answer: the two types of tape that work the best for me are MEDIPORE or HYPAFIX. Most hospitals have Medipore. I take a roll w/me to doc's offices or the infusion center. Neither are cheap but well worth not having my top layer of skin pulled off w/every bandaid.
Trickling - the thread is only 12 pages so I don't think it's too much for someone to wade through. I hate making suggestions when I can't undertake to help w/the solution - but I'm thinking that tips could be put in the 'intro' as a list of things to try like the tips to get ready for chemo or breast recon 101. I'm guessing it would take the MODS to allow that change. Still - I don't think 12 pages is a big deterrent to someone who shares our problem and part of what works for me is reading the trial & error stories of others.]
I'll go back and edit my skin protectant post to bold the name of the one that works for me.

A very belated New Year to all. I am sorry I have been AWOL - no excuses except I have been busy with this and that and babysitting my grand daughters. I think Bumping the thread is a good idea. From time to time we could put an update of what latest things we discovery - making the post more current than leaving through 12 pages of previous posts ???
To update - my tape of choice is MEPITAC, which is made in Finland. The USA phone # is 800-882-4582. They send me a HUGE box of supplies (free of charge) and I think I probably have a life time supply now of tape to use on blood draws and small incisions like IV placement. (I live in the USA)
When I had cataract surgery, the doctor was VERY impressed with this tape as most of his patients are "elderly" with sensitive skin. When I had a stroke last June, my arm was seriously "wounded" from the IV and whatever tape they used.
Hello to any newbies and greeting to all. Nancy (GramE)

Another thought - Put your message in Capital letters - or at least the brand name of the product used.

GramE - thanks for your post. how about putting the product in bold too? I'll change mine.

Bumping for the newbies. Happy Monday tomorrow.

YooooHoooooo Everyone
Try a GOOGLE IMAGES search for: lake Michigan freeze 2014
The radio is full of reminders that about 1/3 of Lake Michigan is under deep freeze and something we have not had for some decades.
Guess who needs to take a bus downtown early this morning? We will be following the lake shore for a good portion of the trip. I am seriously considering taking my binoculars, despite the fact that I have to do some running around down.
Our current Chicago temperature is -1 degree and we are to reach a wind chill of -20 degreeeeeeeees.

Stay warm and cozy. :-)

Trickling - I was just looking for this thread to bump again and found your post. BOY that's some kind of cold. And I'm complaining that we'll get in the high 20's tonight with sleet so I've had to cover most of my plants. Must be time to get back under my heated throw!!

Trickling, I did not realize We're Practically Neighbors! LOL. Well sorta! Stay warm. Minus you too! LOL. Warm is relative anyway.

Pessa - I too was allergic to most tapes and even the latex drainage tube left in my chest after surgery for about 2-3 weeks. I had to put a gauze dressing around the tube entry point. They for sure would not take the tube out any sooner. My old RN days recall using a mesh tube like stretch dressing that could be pulled over a limb or even the abdomen to hold a dressing on or tubing in place ( my dialysis nurse days ). I usually ask for paper tape and take it off in less that 24 hours otherwise I get a rash or hives. Most wounds are best if left open to the air for healing rather than being taped over too much. There is also a sterile wound cover called " Op-Site" that's peels off and over the entry point that can now be found at drug stores I believe. Hope this helps.

I CAN USE TEGADERM FOR 2 TO 8 DAYS ALONG WITH BENEDRYL EVERY 6 HOURS

@ GrammyR Thanks for going into detail. I don't know about anyone else; but I am having a very hard time understanding the use of latex for products inserted in the body. I thought latex was banned. Furthermore, if a person did not know they were allergic to latex, finding out in the middle of an operation/recovery is plaing with Russian Roulette. So glad you are stll with us and courageous enough to share.
Iwill check to see if op-site is carried by CVS pharmacy.

Be careful with that Second Skin stuff. It will sting terrible if you have any open skin. I use it all the time when I have a cut that keeps opening because my as soon as my hands go in water, bandaids fall off. And it really stings if it gets on open skin. But it is effective.
I still am just a little pink and swollen and still itch now and then from a terrible rash I had in December after my surgery. It didn't show up until about 1.5 wk. after surgery and it just kept growing. It looked like I was wearing a bra with one strap because 2/3 of my breast was red and itched 24/7 like mosquito bites were all over it. The darn thing just kept spreading and went up toward my shoulder. My surgeon didn't know what it was so she called in another doctor to look at it and he said he thinks it's from steri strips. However I did have that stuff when I had my biopsy the month before with no reaction. I've had surgery before and don't recall them using it . Is steri strip something recent within the last 8 years or so? They didn't used to put anything over stitches other than gauze as far as I recall. That's what they think it is anyway. I start rads on Monday and it's still not 100% better, but at least good enough to begin treatment.

lily. It was probably the cleanser they brush on. Someone I think Minus had the rash too. Steri strips take the place of stitches on the outside. To leave a smaller scar.

Steri strips take the place of outside stitches or staples.

Moon - my most violent allergic rash was from Lovenox pills after BMX surgery to prevent blood clots. I already knew & made it very clear about my problems with various tapes pulling off the layers of my skin. I didn't have a problem w/steri-strips tho.

Trickling- Yep they still use Latex tubing a lot. There is no good substitute for something that has to go in the body for a few days or weeks. Of course I had no idea my body would react so much. A bunch of drug allergies too so I am very cautious when new meds Rx. As far as liquid bandage, I have never tried it. A week after my saline implant was placed I started to swell and get very tender under the breast. I had not taken tbe antibiotics my PS sent me home with because of all my allergies and I figured it was a clean cut. He was not too happy with me and put me back on double strength ones. Almost needed to go back in surgery so thankfully meds kicked in.

@ Lilyluv Thank you for alerting us to your upcoming rads, particularly given your ongoing allergy reactions. You can count on our pulling for you. If you can, keep us updated and what you are trying to do in terms of alerting/dealing with medical staff re your allergies.

Hi ladies, I have posted here before on my reactions to adhesives & the crazy ( & negligent) things that have happened to me. But this time I'd like to share about a product that I did not react to. I had cataract surgery the other day & need to wear an eye patch while I'm sleeping. In my kit was "transpore" by 3M. my MD said to try it & if I had a reaction he would give me an ointment at my appt the next day. Well...I did not have a reaction!!! The first time!!! I just thought I would share.....have a wonderful day ladies!

Hooooray! tenaj. Glad the 3M Transpore tape worked for you and you continue to tell it like it is.
Hope your cataract surgery was also a success. You would love to see the beautiful newly falling snow here, in Chicago. Predictions are for it to continue with another frigid (ugh) front to follow. Transportation is a crazy . . .
