Adhesive TAPE - help need to find non-allergic

Hi Sandra 6411 and other skin issue peoples,
Just a heads up, as well as reacting to adhesives chlorhexidine can also cause problems. It is commonly used in the wipe for cleaning around PICC's, skin cleaning for iv's and injections and in many other disinfecting solutions, ie in hibitane surgical scrub, in the pink fluid hair dressers use on combs etc., manicure/pedicure sterilizing solutions. And it may be impregnated in some dressings, bandages, iv and picc lines. Burning blisters as a form of contact dermatitis is the result. Cortisone cream works for minor cases, if more advanced use systemic prednisone. Like many allergies the sensitivity seems to build, becoming worse with every exposure. Minimize contact with both and seek treatment asap.

JJ! Thanks for that info. Why didn't I think of that being a problem? Duh. LOL thanks for the warning.

@JJ62 Pink fluid used for cleaning HAIRDRESSER COMBS. Fortunately, my reaction is low key; however, I definitely try to wash my hair sooner rather than later after having it cut. I had long ago concluded that there was something in the solution to which I was allergic but you've not only given it an expert's analysis but its significant ties to prepping for adhesives. Thanks.

@ Everyone You all know from my recent post that my initial interaction with my new PCP, due to mandated changes for a new a HMO, was disappointing. The more I reflected on it, the more I realized I did not feel at all comfortable at the thought of trying to discuss anything with that doctor - not good sign.
UPDATE: As of yesterday, I have a new PCP, who is still at the hospital of my choice. My first appointment is the afternoon of May 8.

Yay Trickling! Getting a good doctor is hard. Glad you swapped. Here's hoping this is the best one!

Hello,
I also react to adhesive. The plastic tape is the worst, and the paper tape a little better. I usually just have a red angry outline of where the tape was that last for at least a week, with a little blistering. My skin can though get torn off from it fairly easily. I had plastic surgery last December and my doc was great about it- he just didn't use tape. I had all of the bandages laid on the suture lines, and then the compression garment would hold everything in place. I am guessing that in my upcoming double mastectomy this will not be an option, but am wondering if perhaps I can tolerate something like a light wrap (ace bandage) going around the gause to hold it in place?
I did find some bandages that I reacted to, but they had a very slim strip of adhesive on each end so at least it minimized it. I can't remember the name of them, but if you are interested let me know and I will go through my orders off of Amazon to look it up. Good luck-

HappyTeacher - thanks for your input. Yes, when you get time it would be great to know what worked for you. Although everyone reacts differently, we sure do try to put 'new' options out there.
You will probably need something to hold your drains in place. If you have time, try to get some Medipore or Hypafix from your hospital & test it ahead of time.
Or consider creative ways to use Glad Press 'N Seal. Sometimes that's all I use with a small patch of gauze underneath since it sticks to your skin very well.

@happyteacher Hi! You might also try finding the postings on this thread by GramE, who had great success with a product which she was able to get free samples of. It looks as though the postings were around June 2011.

In the USA, 1-800-882-4582
Made in Finland, Molnlycke Health Care in the company.
They did more than free "samples". There are/were full size sterile packages of many of their products, including 8 x 20 inch dressing.

I was at was Walgreens yesterday. I noticed they have the hydrocoloidal bandages like the ones at CVS. They have a pretty big size for that kind of bandage I saw one about 3x3? Or thereabouts.

A bit off the topic but I'd like to share this info about DONATING BODIES TO SCIENCE.
A news article was prominently featured on the monitor when I opened my computer this morning. Thanks to one the persons commenting, I, who long ago decided to donate my body to science via the ANATOMICAL GIFT ASSOCIATION, which I believe has offices registered in every state, had not known of comparable alternative organizations. Well! Here you go. I am happy to pass on that MEDCURE also exists to fill this need. In fact, I am going to personally do a little investigating because I like the emphasis MEDCURE apparently places on providing the medical history of the donor to the researchers.
Personally, I find sharing about such donations upbeat. THANK YOU, JEANNIE, for commenting on the news article and giving us MEDCURE as a resource!
The computer would not allow me to post any links but the following info should speed up your own searching.
*** 1) Today's NEWS ARTICLE with comments and replies is entitled, "Balloons Travel 35 Miles To Bring Strangers Together for a Heart-Wrenching Reason".
*** 2) MEDCURE .org should pop up when searched for on GOOGLE.
*** 3) ANATOMICAL GIFT ASSOCIATION will appear on GOOGLE for whatever state you live in.
*** Also, you might be interested in Chapter 17, particularly pages 250 ff, of the BOOK, "Jane Brody's Guide to the Great Beyond: A Practical Primer to Help You and Your Loved Ones Prepare Medically, Legally, and Emotionally for the End of Life".
I know some followers of our thread are from CANADA. Does Canada have some comparable organizations?
Here, in Chicago, it is an absolutely LUSH spring day and I am heading on out.

As long as I am just doing a BUMP for the thread, thought I would do it in season, SOCCER SEASON.
Mind you, I know next to nothing about soccer (so too, hockey). Well, on the Friday that the games started, I decided to search the YouTube for the national anthems.
I was zapped!
Even now, the BOUNCY opera like melody of the national anthem of Brazil continues to make me all smiley and happy as can be. Not afraid of showing it, I have had people break into smiles on the street when they sense me exuding this contagious thing - even though I am not even humming it.
So, I DARE YOU to click on the link below. One person I met said he would definitely open the link with his daughter and son (around 7& 8 years old). I assured him that the kids would undoubtedly spontaneously dance around with happiness.

YES! It surely does bring LIFE TO THE FORE in best opera like fashion of the word!!

Tagaderm got my during my recent sx. I had my TKR and the anesthesiologist actually used port since the couldn't find a good vein. But by the time the de accessed me. Ouch. Oh well not as bad as it could be. LOL if you look at the pic the horizontal line is the port scar. The more vertical line is my skin reaction to the Tagaderm. Two weeks after sx. I didn't think about taking a pic then. LOL. Guess pain pills make a difference in my brain LOL!

Moonflwr912 !!! THANKS !!! for the photo, Moonflwr912. Glad you are healing.
?? Do you have any favorite techniques for dealing with an area having the allergic reaction?
#2 EDGES of TAPE
Has anyone else noticed that sometimes an allergic reaction can be more intense at the very edges of the tape?
Am just curious as to the the "why" of it.

When I opened up my computer to do my post, this link was featured. I give Bethany Townsend, model, a lot of credit.
However, I admit to a mixed reaction regarding the dual message of soaking up the blazing sun without any qualifications as to the length of time in the sun, etc.
?? Anyone care to comment about the dual sun bathing message?

I don't know if she even thought about the sun exposure. When things go viral you don't have any control

D*MN IT! I let my guard down one day. My stupid TEDS were on 48 hours. I adjusted them thinking I was making sure I didn't get a lesion. Nope. Look at what happened last night. On the outer thigh. Such a lovely blister from the rubber top. There was no pain and I kept rolling them down but I must have gotten caught a bit of skin. I did bacitracin and covered with gauze. If they don't look better by tomorrow, I'll do a salt water treatment. This sucks.

Oh Moon - so sorry. Hope the blister goes down & you don't have to fool w/the saltwater. I had Herceptin this week & forgot to take the darn gauze & paper tape bandage off the port in 30 minutes. Big red patch. Sigh! BTW - we meet in the darndest places. How is TNR recovery going? My SIL is going to Chicago this week to meet w/some surgeon there who "guarantees" that you'll be up & running in 2 weeks & no pain. And the best part is you get to pay up front because he doesn't take medicare. Hmmmm.

minus don't you know I stalk you? Bwwaaahhhhh! LOL
Sorry about the port redness. It's such a pain when we know we have an issue and still do stupid things. LOL
My TKR is going well so far. Doing my PT and ROM is pretty good. Still on pain pills. Still have D! LOL yes, I know I'm an "outlier" LOL I mess up everyone's stats! LOL. That Dr sounds like one I'd hobble away from fast! ( I'd say run but not just now...) unless her knees are in pretty good shape and she only needs a partial I don't see how it's possible. T hey actually shave off big parts of the knee bone to make the appliance fit. They cut your quad muscle at a 90 degree angle and flop it over then they shove a metal rod into your bone, cement it put the quad muscle back and stitch it up. Then they tighten the tendons. That's just the top. Then they do pretty much the same to the bottom but the move the knee cap out of the way before cementing the plastic cap on the back. Then they put it back and tighten the tendons on the cap.
Does that sound like a 2 week recovery?
If all he does is go in and tighten things up microscopically maybe. But not replacement. Please have her get more opinions!
Much love.
