Josie - we didn't want to do crates so what we did do is put this fence around the area where the doggie door is. No top. The pups are doing really well; they sleep on blankets and have their food and all the comforts of home in their space. I put them outside with all their stuff on nice days.
Since it is your house maybe DD needs to understand they aren't being imprisoned just confined so you still have a house. DS reacts to things we do and I remind him not very nicely that he works and I have them all day and night. Even when he's home he doesn't spend enough time with them. They adore him but after a few minutes they are with DH and I. If they had to clean up non-stop they would feel differently. I would let her know you are happy to help with them but she can't dictate what is done at your house. Maybe she could fund a fence or such.
Does anyone do the Race for the Cure? We had it in our town recently and about 10k people participated. I wasn't one of them in fact I have never done it but friends have. Just wondering.

Diane, It sounds very similar to my DD situation. She is working sometimes a double shift with only like 2 hours or less between shifts. The puppies are with her when she's home but not a lot. Now I think I overheard her boyfriend say he will be off for the next 3 days. That's good and the pups l know really like their backyard.

SAB, am so happy to hear your test results are uneventful! I don't know why we go through these moments, but it changes our perspective for a time, it seems. Have a wonderful worry-free week.Josie, so glad you are getting a shot at a job...sorry you have to have that monitor - the timing isn't great but you will have to figure it out. Hard to believe they would try to blame you for more stuff at the regular job.
The puppy situation would be absolutely intolerable for me. You have a right to do what you need to when they are at your house. You can try Craig's list for a crate or at least a barrier to confine the pups...maybe even get one for free.Janis, your news about your dad is very sad. I know you have managed to accept his situation but that doesn't really make it easier. It is common for caregivers to have POA...although it is usually upsetting to family members. Also, when nursing aids are required and paid for by insurance or assistance, it is common here for a family member to take a small salary as the caretaker. I hope that he does not suffer or feel frustrated as his memory isn't as sharp. You can send photos and cards if nothing else. I don't think we are ever really ready for this time in our lives. Hugs and prayers...
April, Aubrey is absolutely beautiful! Enjoy every moment as she will grow quickly. I hope DD and her DH are doing well. I am sorry about your dad not doing well. I am also concerned for you and DH - he should be able to find out what the problem is. Please take care of yourself as you are experience major stresses and emotions right now. The best way to calm down is to hold a sweet new baby! I hope you can do that....
Cindy, glad to hear DH's infusions are ending I hope you can do some of those things you like to do...you have had quite a difficult time.
Well, I'd love to continue but work looms and I have to sleep a few hours....
Back soon!

Thanks Joan. I know about the song by Bread and it was the first thing I thought of when I heard that my son and my daughter in law were naming her Aubrey. Of course, I immediately sent them a link to the YouTube of the song. It is a beautiful song.
Hubby is still sick with a URI that began over a week ago. He is on antibiotics and a pill for his cough and his fever (although low grade like 99.2 ish) comes and goes. I am really concerned. His blood work showed elevated white count (no surprise) and he is still "quite anemic" (doctor's words) and his liver enzymes are elevated too. Ugh. They keep trying to find what is happening but have been unable to pinpoint the cause of this. His weight has dropped substantially since May and although it is still dropping, it is very slowly doing so now. He is down to the 170's from 210. Scary as hell. I think they are going to do a PET or CT scan next and/or a chest x-ray. Blood work has not indicated Leukemia which is what they were initially thinking I guess.
I believe in crating for pups personally. I did not do it with one of my goldens and he had separation anxiety to the point where he ate and entire sofa while we were at work! Also, he ate a column in the family room that was made out of wood. We finally had to medicate him and then we crated him but the did not like it cause he was already full grown. Once my ex husband left work for good (SSI) the dog did fine cause he was home all the time, but it was bad for a while. Crating is a GOOD thing and keeps the dog safe as well.
Cindy, glad the hubby is finishing treatment!
Have to run...work calls!! xoxo
Shoutout to Big D!

Thanks Joan and April for the encouragement.
April, I'm sorry your DH is still so I'll. I sure wish they could come to a diagnosis. Why haven't they taken a chest X-Ray?

So sorry about your husband April. I know you are so worried about him. It's scary when we don't know the cause.
I think we dog owners need to do whats best for our babies. We have someone home most of the time so they are not left alone very long or very often plus we have a big backyard which helps. Dogs do have separation anxiety. Our lab did. He travels with us as often as we can take him. Now we will be taking the babies too.

Brain MRI today ladies. Scared...do not know why. Mostly the dye they inject. I react to so much AND have very tiny veins. Last time was 3 years ago but I was in the hospital already. Wish me luck.

I have nothing but hugs to send to those of you who are taking care of dhs. It is so troubling that symptoms cannot always be identified/understood. Sometimes I just wish one of those tv doctors (one of the cute ones) that set our expectations would come to life and magically put together all the symptoms.
Let me add my vote to the crating question. Raised my lab up that way and she still likes to curl up in her crate (10+ years later) for some cozy down time. No door has been on that crate for a long time, but it was great for her and for us.
April and Janis, so hard to watch our parents struggle. Hugs to you!
Bunkie, in your pocket for this test.
Charger sounds like all fun stuff!
I wish I could write more but I have run out of lunch hour. I'm thinking of you all!

Crates are certainly a matter of taste. Initially, my dog wasn't much of a fan, but, until he got over his puppy chewaholic stage, there he was when we were out. Interestingly, just as we figured we could ditch the crate, that was exactly when he decided that he liked it. Crates are not cheap, but a bathroom door works just fine. Puppykins probably will not figure out how to open the door, and any mess will be in a area that is cleanable.

SAB, big PHEW to you! So glad you got the all-clear.
April, fantastic about the baby! So much on your plate right now, goodness gracious. I hope they figure out what's going on with your husband soon, very soon. I second Josie's question: why haven't they done a chest x-ray already?
Bunkie, hope the MRI wasn't too rough today and you get some revealing (but not alarming) data out of it.
Janis, so sorry about your dad.
Josie, I'm in the crate camp too. Our first dog was rarely crated and had awful separation anxiety. Our second dog was crated until she was several years old. We just tossed a treat in and she trotted in after it happily. Dogs aren't people--they like their dens. We've tried the bathroom route, by the way, and have some terribly scratched-up doors to show for it.
Sorry I've been so quiet. Cindy, no marathons for me just now but trying to hang on as the semester gets busy. I had a recurrence scare a couple of weeks ago, sore spot on my spine that finally bugged me too much. I got an x-ray and it seems fine, will get some PT and check back in with my doctor in a month or so. Today we found out my husband's bladder cancer is back. Very tiny superficial tumor, but he's opted for surgery with a chemo wash instead of the less aggressive office cauterization he was offered. I feel as though the stuffing's been ripped out of me. Meanwhile our car is making a persistent infuriating whistling sound we've been unable to get looked at for over a month, our first cell phone bill since kid #2 got a smart phone is over $400, and our over-the range microwave died and the new one got delivered but not installed, because Home Depot lied about their installation policy--huge box in our living room, gaping hole over the stove, no plan for solving it. Little things, scary things, too many things. I don't mean to exaggerate: the bladder cancer recurrence is more upsetting than significant. The doctor said it might very well have been there the first time but they just didn't see it. The chemo wash will dramatically reduce his odds of another tumor. Still this one tallies as a recurrence after just 3 months and I'm kind of walking around in a daze.

Brookside is right...crates are a matter of preference.
Pup loves his crate goes in on his own...my sister uses her downstairs bathroom...a neighbor tried a small room downstairs and the pup chewed the cabinets, hose to washer, scratch a hole in the door...you just never know...our golden left outside chewed the pool equipment, deck, and most plants...pick your damage control.
Good to here from you Brookside!

We are pulling for you Bunkie. I know you are scared. Let us know.
Run - too much to deal with ESP your DH. So sorry. Home Depot is notorious for that. When things start breaking/need to be replaced its like living in a money pit. Ditto with us. After the car, then the hot water heater and a water leak from upstairs bathroom. Blessed husband could make repairs. I'm sure you are on stress overload. 400? Yikes. From using the Internet?
DS is feeling better after injury from rugby. Rough sport sometimes but he loves it. 12 stitches that will be taken out in a week. Dr thinks he suffered a concussion.
Cindy - you are right ours will b too big too especially our fenced in area. One of the pups can already jump over the fence so we have to refigure sleeping arrangements.
So nice to see we have a lot of dog owners/dog lovers on this website.

BUNKIE, (((hugs)))) I hope everything went ok. That really snuck up on us. I didn't realize it was today.
SAB, how was the ultrasound on the pancreas? I never heard about it.
Cindy, Thanks for the offer. I would love to go down to Austin to meet you and get a crate. But a little to far.
Run, so sorry about your DH.I hope the chemo wash works for him .I'll bet your just numb right now.
Diane, I'm sure your pups have gotten bigger and are starting to find their way over the fence. Our pup did too. But she was so easy to train and never had accidents so we finally just stopped using the play yard. Now my DD s pups different story.
Brookside, I also wondered how they would be in the bathroom. With my luck they would get into something. But I would be willing to try. Haven't heard from DR since the weekend and I am sure all is well. She's just so busy.
Hope I didn't miss someone.
OK so today was good but a lot to absorb. I was under the impression that I would be front office today. "Wrong" they had me doing back office today. Working hard. On my feet constantly until lunch. Not even a chair to sit. Now my office manager said we should get 2 ten minute breaks plus 30 min lunch.Well not happening in OB dept. I did get to sit down at lunch. It's just a rude awakening to my legs. I'm not used to that. But they seemed impressed of my ability to catch on so quickly. And apparently the office manager and I went to church together a long time ago. It's a small world. Thursday I will be front office. But I think I did pretty well considering I have been almost 99% bone density.

Thanks ladies for the support with the MRI. It was awful but I got through it. I could not get comfortable on the table with all my pain issues, they could not get my vein to take the dye and when I got up from the test the room was spinning. Got through it. They called in a vein specialist for the dye and my BT helped me to the car twirling and almost fainting. I tell you I really felt like "Driving Miss Daisy". Lets hope nothing bad is brewing and after they compare to the one done in 2011 and 2009 it will be the same. On one hand it would be nice to find the vertigo anser but not find iscky stuff.
Runfree - Was wondering about you. Good grief sometimes it just goes in spirts...Just paid 350 to fix my GE profile that decided to not work after 3 years. They do not make them like they used to. My car is flickering, washer making a noise and furnace humidifier is broken. Moneypit for sure. Hoping your back pain is nothing. I am so sorry about DH and the bladder stuff. My dad had that for years...kept getting zapped till he finally got 94 and his body gave out. I am hoping it will be a fast recovery. You hang in there.
Josie - I missed some posts so did you get a new job finally? Yeah!!!!
Edwards - I have always loved dogs but after moms died with her and dad I swore I did not want another. Well this little dog my BT has decided to make me love another one. Real cutie. Looking for a down jacket for her. She will not do a crate. Has very bad seperation issues. We passed a law here that animal cruelity cases go to jail. They just got some guy for kicking 2 cats around. He got 10 years.

Bunkie, Glad things went ok for you & that BT was there for you. How's the house reno/sale going?
0 -
Josie - way to go girl. Being on your feet all day is tough. My mother, sister and I all worked retail at one time or another and gotta tell you my legs were killing me by the end of the day. My sister said that's why she has varicose veins. Sounds like a good job though. Yea! Your daughter is just gorgeous. I just love Halloween!
Bunkie - I know you are so relieved to be done with the MRI. Good for your state making animal cruelty a serious crime. To me it is. Poor little defenseless things. Speaks volumes about their sorry owners. 10 years...love that. Maybe they could have some of the prison guards kick him around or hopefully some big Bubba type will make him his GFF. Zero tolerance for hurting animals. I am glad your BT got you another dog. I have always had them so wouldn't know what life would be like without one. Too cute a down jacket for your baby. Already spoiling her - I know cant help yourself.
Thanks 70charger. He is on the mend. Looks gruesome but not having anymore headaches.

Bunkie, congrats on the new pup. Post a pic. I wanna see.
Diane, thanks, for the nice comments about my DD. She's a cutie but sometimes a handful.
Ok now tommorow is day#2 on the new job. They want me to train up front on the new computer system. In the first 10 min I had a name tag and had to watch 2 videos about OHSHA and privacy practices and take a little test on the Hippa laws.
And they want a copy of my license for my Medical Assistant. Maybe they will hire me. I know don't count your chickens before they hatch.

First of all SAB glad to hear your test came out okay. That is way too much to have to worry about.
Janis, sorry about your dad. We went through those things with my dad. It is so difficult. Glad his lady friend is looking out for him. It would be so much more difficult if you or your sister had to be there. She is maybe earning her keep.
April congrats on the new grandchild. She is beautiful. Sorry you are worrying about your DH. My sis just got a new granddaughter, and it has really improved her health. All of those wonderful feelings bring good hormones. Her Rheumatoid Arthritis has gone into remission. Hope that new baby makes you feel wonderful! You deserve it.
Josie, glad you are getting a chance to check out a different job. Hope all goes well for you there. Your daughter is beautiful. As for crating a dog. I am all for it. Our dogs were so much more secure having their den to go into when we were gone. It makes them feel safer. They need their dens to be well psychologically. They are den animals, from all I read.
Bunkie, glad your test is over. Hopefully it will come back with normal results. Glad your BT is still there with you. You just don't need to be alone and dealing with house issues on your own.
We got a good offer on our house and have accepted it. Now the buyer has to work on getting ready for the closing in December. I have to go and start getting things ready to downsize, move or store. We are going to buy a small townhouse on a golf course near our daughter to replace this house. New rather than a house built in the early 80's this one is hopefully going to be more worry free and a good storm home for my daughter and grandkids when they can't get to the farm. We will spend time there in the spring, summer and fall. We all like to golf, so it will be good.
Cindy, glad your DH is done with infusions. Run, your DH is going to be okay. I just feel it. I know you are getting so fatigued though. I hope it all goes smoothly and is over soon.
Hi to Joan, Brookside, Diane, 70's Charger, SEW, and anyone else I might have missed. We are in Florida until Nov. 6. We flew down on my birthday, and what a wonderful day of travel it turned out to be. Everything was golden. We got to upgrade to first class with a reduced rate and things we like butter. We have been relaxing for a few days now, and we have even done some retirement planning. DH is going to have to ramp down, since quitting completely just doesn't fit his personality. Whew! Lots of changes. Love to everyone.

hi - everyone is so busy...me too.
Josie, dont forget you are trying the job out too. Even if it is a lot of work if people are fair and readonable it is an improvement. Good luck with all.
Cindy - so busy!! When i get stressed or upset i loke to plan trips. I dont always go but often do.
Sunday is my Dgd's 7th BD. we are going to Disney for a few days. Lots of other friends of DD going so I dont know my role -- but I am happy to get away. Beats work which has not been fun lately.
Bunkie glad you made it through. Hoping for good reports.
April so much on your plate...has DH been for a second opinion? Hugs and prayers for you all.
Run, what a scare. I hope the surgery and treatment takes care of it for DH.
Diane hope the rugby patient heals quickly.
Janis I hope you hear better news about your dad.
Big D Lemon Gigi Sew and others...keep checking in- you are missed.
Off to sleep...

Joan, I will be down here when you are. I know you will be busy with family, but I will keep an eye out for you. Maybe we will cross paths. If you see a very tall blond man with a short dark woman, you will look twice, because it might me and my DH.

Congrats on selling the home, Gigil. Here, for sale signs practically line the roads. Apparently the second home rage of earlier years has been replaced by condos and time shares and somewhat random trips to everchanging vacation destinations. As the gods of wireless towers frown on areas of low population density, we have no cell phones and high speed internet is not easy to acquire. Who would want to move his or her precious iphone here?
What a rotten MRI experience, Bunkie. I hope the spinning has settled down. Do you think it was the contrast medium that caused it? Like you I'm hoping for no change from the last scan, except maybe a tiny, totally benign, easily reached thingy that has been exactly there for many years, but refused to show its face until imaged by the newest, super powerful machine the hospital just happens to have recently acquired.
Dogs, like children, have to learn to treat a house with respect. You wouldn't let a two year-old roam free with fingerpaints and so forth, would you? That's why they invented the playpen (now reincarnated as the pack 'n play), the jumper thing, and, of course, nap time. Baby doggies, similarly, need to be either in a safe place (for them and for the house), or supervised. Like children, like dogs.
