phxsunshine-congrats on your 32 yrs next month. Iowans are good people! Glad to know I am not the only person that cannot tolerate AI's. MO going to start me on Aromasin in 2 weeks. I may start out every other day. Hoping this is the one that I can handle.

Also started a Beta-blocker today. Studies out there showing that it help prevent bone metastasis. Medical News Today web site had article on it & I have heard about it at other educational meetings. Not big on taking pills, but beta blockers have been around forever. Willing to give everything a try.

? for you and Shayne....What exactly is an ND & how did you find them.

Here's a good link to what a ND is.  It is one of the few perks of living in Arizona, there are many NDs to chose from:

I have been taking the generic, Exemastane, for about a year. The first few months I ached so much but that has ended other than an occassional day or two of joint pain. I still have hot flashes, but had them before I started. I read the part about weight lose on it - but sadly, I did not get that SE! LOL

Hello again, I have now been on aromasin for 1 month. I am so happy! No side effects at all except a little stiffness in my fingers and feet first thing in the morning. The terrible fatigue that I had on the Tamoxifen is completely gone (which is the main reason I quit taking it) and all the arm, leg, and foot pain! It really is worth it to try different meds. I know things can change from month to month but right now I am loving where my head is at for the first time in 2 years! Good luck to all of you.

Good to hear there are good stories to share as well!  YAY for that.

ND = Naturopathic Doctor.  I'm lucky to have a Board Certified Naturopathic Oncologist, there aren't too many of those in the entire country, but she will do video conferencing and has patients around the world.  I found her through my radiation oncologist. She's there to help me do all I can do to help myself.  Things to help the MDs.  Through her help, I've cleaned up my environment and my diet.  I've had allergies all my life and took Zyrtec year round. 4 months after I started seeing her I realized my sinuses didn't hurt and I thought I'd do an experiment and see if I could get by without the Zyrtec, well that was almost 18 mos. ago.  This year and last I stuck my face in the citrus blossoms and sucked in all their sweet aroma, left the house opened up when the weather was fine and can work in the yard without a complaint.  She was happy because she said there are studies linking allergies and cancer growth, so my body is healthier.  Her name is Dr. Heather Paulson, her practice is in Tempe, Az.  Website:  http://www.aznaturalhealth.com/

I love her and I love all my medical docs too.  They are smart and they care about me. I trust them 100%

Hey y'all!  My first two months on Aromasin were so much better than Femara, only a little carpal tunnel pain.  I'm well into my second 60 day bottle and my ankles and feet are so stiff.  And the weight gain...holy moly!  I've got to get control of it.  I'm not eating more, but somehow I've got to figure out how to lose instead of gain.  A nurser friend of mine says it's very common on these meds, but I'm pushing two hundred and have already had to completely rebuild my wardrobe once.

I've worked hard on my sleep.  I keep the room really dark and cool, got some super comfy sheets and jammies, and take benadryl and melatonin before bed.  I still get up to pee and I don't sleep extremely soundly, but for the most part, I am sleeping.

I appreciate everyone sharing their stories.  It helps to know we're not alone!

    Hi ladies,

I've been on Aromasin since February. I found taking Aromasin at night helped me. I had the bone pain initially, that is greatly lessened now. I also freaked out from brain fog, and that's pretty much gone now.

My question is about water retention - I gained 3 pounds in one week from fluids. I drink a lot of water and that makes me pee a lot, but if I sniff salt, I blow up. Anyone have this SE and any advice?

Interested to here if others are struggling with weight while on Aromasin. I lost weight during chemo and rad and now the scales is creeping up. My appetite is hard to control. I've been on Aromasin since April 1 and that was just about the time my weight started creeping. Didn't really associate the two until I read the posts above.

Darn it - that chemo/rad weight loss came with a big price. I really don't want to see those pounds again.

I saw a weight gain around my abdomen also. I was advised to eat more protein, go low fat whenever possible, and move more -whether walking, going to a gym, whatever. That worked a little bit but now the fluid retention has overtaken any pounds I might have lost.

I have problems with the weight as well. I think it's the steroid part to it, but must say I am much more hungry on Aromasin. On Femara I had no appetite but still dealt with the weight gain.

My nutritionist has suggested I eat more vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. I guess pastas, breads, and potatoes are things I need to avoid.

Same here. I haven't really gained more than a few pounds, but they are all around my middle which I've never had before. I jog every day and have joined a twice-a-week very intense beg. bootcamp class. I'm eating lots of veggies and fruits; have cut down on bread and haven't been on Aromasin since February.  But I still have a lot of bloating (knees, ankles, etc) and some bone and muscle pain (including pain in the toes) I think the bone and muscle pain is left over from the Aromasin as it is supposed to stay in your body for quite a while (or so I've heard)

Wish I knew what to do about the bloat - trying to drink more water- which, oddly enough, is supposed to HELP water retention. I don't want to take a diuretic--

I have bloating if I eat a big meal, usually in the evening at a restaurant, and drink a lot of fluids at the same time. I'm learning to slow my meals down, eat and drink less at one time, and that seems to work.

I'm wondering if our bodies can't handle salt now. I find every time I eat out I seem to feel very bloated.

Good Idea. Thanks for reminding me to eat slowly. I'm always in a hurry and gulp my food. My grandma used to say "Chew each bite 20 times" SmileShe was a smart lady and her sister was a doctor

Good point kira about the salt. I never add salt, but who knows what's in those sauces they serve up.

Everything seems to have salt in it. I try to cook as much as possible from scratch and limit the frozen and canned stuff.  But even bread and cereal have salt in it--

Yes, sadly it does dogs. Fortunately I don't have high blood pressure, but I want to keep it that way.

Well now that you mention it.....I have gained quite a spare tire. It started when I was on the tamoxifen. I was eating everything in sight. But once I switched to the aromasin my eating habits went back to normal. No more sugar cravings, greasy food cravings......But my weight still seems to be creeping up! My normal weight has always been 115 to 120 lbs. Now I am fluxuating between 131 and 136 lbs. I swear every ounce of that has accumulated in my middle!

Well, everything you say is true and I guess we can take comfort that we all have the middle weight gain and some bloating. I am convinced that no matter how much I restrict salt, and I do, it is in everything. As frustrating to limit salt as it is to limit soy. Both are in everything!!!

    Hi,

Is it possible to be speaking about seroma (!)

A seroma is a swollen area of tissue filled with blood serum - a fluid component of your blood that contains no blood cells, platelets, or clotting factors. Seromas can occur after a surgery or injury, while your tissues are trying to heal. Your body will attempt to absorb the blood serum back into nearby tissues, but if the fluid builds up faster than your body can soak it up, it collects in one place and becomes a seroma.

    Best Usha

Yes, all is good. This stupid computer kept misspelling SEROMA. They did an ultrasound to confirm all was good. Thanks for asking

Well been off aromasin about 3.5 weeks. My leg pain subsided for a few days but returned today. I am going to be trying arimidex. I have been trying to limit sugary foods and eat more fruits and vegetables. I hate the bloated feeling and the leg pains.

Tonight I was watching my son play soccer and tried to help retrieve balls but had no speed and was soooo stiff. I used to be very athletic and this is very upsetting.

Kira1234, My seroma is larger than a golf ball. I'm all for anything that will get rid of it. Have had aspirated five times. I'm ten months post surgery so the body isn't going to adsorb it.

ptdreamers.......mine swelled up to twice golf ball size at least!  I was stunned when i saw it on a ct scan pre-rads.  My BS said it would be months before it went away.....  Maybe there is something else they can do for you?  That must be so uncomfortable for you!!
