I picked up lots of plaster chunks at 3 in the morning. I think it was a decent workout SadWe have an old house, and apparently we sprung a small leak in the roof yesterday with all the rain we had. In the middle of the night, 1/3 of our bedroom plaster ceiling took it upon itself to fall off the lath. Luckily our bed is not under the spot. Certainly was a good workout cleaning up though. Hope to stick to some more typical exercise for the rest of the week. Now to try and find a roofer who works in the winter...

me: I'm not up to a long walk this morning, lets take the short route.

Personal Trainer Dog Misty: NOPE. LONG WALK. PERIOD.

about an hour later, finally home. My dear elderly dog is fine; I'm totally woofed out --- but probably a little bit healthier for pushing myself :) Good dog :)

Shoveling snow here today for exercise, then walking to the dentist for a routine cleaning. Have the day off for President's Day so enjoying the snow and the warm house. Swimming tomorrow after a week off due to work meetings. I love winter but look forward to warmer weather to get walking again.

I have to say I'm impressed with those of you who are taking the time to exercise while still undergoing treatment. I had to quit my job to fit exercise into my life. I joined the National Training Center here over a year ago and just started going about a month ago! I started getting on the machines for just 30 minutes (kicked my butt) and now I'm on it for 60 minutes and I've started changing up the exercises you can choose from. You can listen /watch TV if you bring your ear buds so I've watched The Chew and HGTV - time flies! I lost only 2 lbs in the last 3 weeks, but I think the more days I go the better the results will be.

hi I noticed you take Arimidex. Any side effects?

I take Arimidex, but have not really noticed any side effects. Hard to tell about joint pain, as I have arthritis. I had a hip replacement last year due to chemotherapy's toll on the joint. Since then, the hip is feeling great.

I almost completely stopped exercising :( and can only use foot pain as an excuse for the past two weeks. Goal for this weekend and next week: at least use the exercise bike twice (that doesn't stress the inflamed toe joints). I HAVE been "exercising" my hands and brain though --- making counted cross stitch bookmarks for family and friends :) So maybe that counts for something

It's been hard to get back on the horse and get some regular exercise. I'm still doing my hand weights, but no cardio,,,, need to get back to that.

Been reading through lots of these posts...I came to see if exercise is encouraged or not? It seems it is...As a couple of you know, I go to my first appointment at the Lymphedema Clinic next Thursday...I guess, to be honest, I was thinking you were supposed to take it easy, but maybe not? I, desperately, need to work off this nervous energy...I woke up at 3 w/heart pounding...I know it was adrenaline from the wee morning hr. liver dump...Couldn't go back to sleep, so came on here...Wonder if I should have gone on the treadmill? I normally do a mile everyday, but it's usually in the evening...I have a million questions, so bare w/me 'till I get some answers...So happy and blessed to have all you ladies within my "reach out"...I live alone, w/my 4 little doggies, whom I'm adore, but I do need some two legged friends to share with too...So what is this about typing setting off a flare up? And is this how lymphedema works: flare ups then remission?

Love your doggie pic!! They are so cute. What are their names and breeds? My avatar is my Princess Ava (true diva) who is a pit bull mix.

Yes, walking is great. I would probably hold off on doing any weights with arms until you are evaluated. StepUpSpeakOut has exercise information too. Start low, go slow. Walking and deep belly breathing to get the lymph moving. Swimming is good exercise, walking or jogging in the pool. You could bicycle, road or stationary, but be cautious about resting too much weight on your hands for now. I think if you have a treadmill at home, go for it.

Before BC, I used to work out with a trainer, and lifted decent sized weights. When I started back, it was ONE pound weights. Very hard to deal with. I'm moving up very slowly.

Thank you glennie, and from L-R Molly (the Morkie) and a true diva who loves to dress up, then Buzz, a male yorkie, who loves to play with toys all day long, then Apple, a female yorkie who tries to boss everyone around, w/no results lol (the oldest and my first) and Cha Cha (the Chorkie) who thinks our king size bed is all hers during the daytime and dares anyone to come up the steps to her property lol...They are my heart...I've always been a big dog person, but when my English Mastiff crossed the rainbow bridge about 9 years ago, I couldn't bring myself to get another big dog...So I got Apple...But yorkie are like potatoes chips, you can't just have one...Buzz was my second, and then Cha Cha and Molly were 3rd and 4th...

Yes, I have a treadmill at home...I actually got it, about 10 years ago, to treat high blood pressure w/o meds...I was able to keep the BP under control, until last summer, and had to go on a beta blocker...ugh...As soon as the summer gets here, I'll do the pool...I live in a patio home, and pool is right across the street...I have a pet sitting biz, so my upper body gets some work out, but I hope the clinic can show me how the weight thing is done...I've never done that, and always thought I probably should! Good to know about the deep breathing...I think I'm going to start doing the treadmill twice a day, instead of once...Five more days 'till my appointment...So anxious to get this show on the road!

Pet sitting? Wish you were near me!! Ava has medical issues that require multiple meds. The last time I kenneled her,, despite putting her meds in a 7 day pill box,, they didn't give her half of the meds! I was so pissed. So need a reliable pet sitter or better kennel.

Your babies are cute! I like big dogs too, but I wonder how I'll be able to handle a large one as I get older. I have a town home too, so no yard,, walkies required.

Deep belly breathing--good for moving the lymph in the trunk. Stay hydrated with lots of water too.

I've been having such a hard time regaining motivation to exercise. But yesterday was day three of 30-minute stints on the exercise bike. So I've made a start again. Yes, I've been walking a lot with my dog, but I don't count that (she's elderly and for me, it's more fresh air than exercise). I have not however been able to push myself to do any of the physical therapy "homework" prescribed years ago for my neck and back problems. Since I'm still not back at work, my neck has been fine. My back hurts again now that I'm out and about more, but the exercises make it hurt more. That's what happened the first time I started them, and I know that after awhile the muscles would strengthen and I'd have less back pain overall. But I feel I've just been through h*ll and back (mastectomy, chemo, LE), I just can't yet voluntarily cause myself more pain, even through exercises my body needs. So for now it's exercise bike while watching Doctor Who on my iPad Netflix. Better than nothing

It is so hard to get motivated. I too walk my dog, but she is very slow and we don't go far. I am managing to do my arm exercises with hand weights but that's it. Need more cardio for sure.

I've had lymphedema for 8 years now. Having a flare up that's been getting me down.  Been going to therapy since November.  I've seen some upper arm improvement but my right, lower arm is where I seem to have most my problems.  I wrap at night in layers and I wear a sleeve during the day.  Still my arm is fighting against me to stay large and puffy looking.  Getting kind of dowm.

I have slight LE in my upper arm area. I work out on an elliptical at the gym and started arm exercises with my 1lb weights. I have 5lb weights from my pre dx days, does anyone know when you can move up to heavier weights?

I try to drink a lot of water a day, and do these execises before I get out of bed that are supposed to "decongest" your arm and trunk.

Leslie, I have the same problem. I'm right-handed, and find there are some activities that aggravate the forearm swelling. Mostly, computer work and crocheting, but also some gardening jobs, and using a scissors. When I'm fighting a flare I have to cut way back on those to get it back in control and then ease back into some controlled activity once things improve. Can you maybe identify some things that might be causing this stubborn swelling and give it a rest for a while? Just a thought. I sure do wish you well with this bummer flare!

    Gentle hugs,
    Binney

    HomeMom,,, love the new avatar!!

My LE therapist had me start with 1 lb and go up very slowly. for example: biceps curls. 1 lb x 10. every other day x 1 week. then 2 sets of 10 x 1 week, then 3 sets of 10 x 1 week. I stayed there for an extra week. Then I moved to 1 lb x 10 for 2 sets, then 2 lb x 10 for 1 set. Did that for a week. Then 1 lb x 10 x 1 set,, 2 lbs x 10 x 2 sets for 1 week. then I moved to 2 lb x 10 x 3 sets,,, stayed there x 2 weeks. Then started slowly with the 3lb weight in the same slow incremental increase.

Does that make sense? It is hard as heck to progress SOOOO slowly,, but that was the advice I got.

That is just one exercise of the group I do,,,, but just wanted to give you an example.

What exercises are you doing in bed to decongest?

glennie - I might have to print that response up, I'll never remember! LOL So you can do that for several arm excersises?

The morning (before I get out of bed) exercises I do include alternating reaching up as if to grab something out of the air, each arm 5-10 times. Reaching forward the same way x 5 or 10. Rotating your shoulders back x 10 then forward x 10. They say to use a yard stick and rotate from side to side x 5 or 10. I usually do 10. I then swing my legs over the side of the bed and rotate my feet going inward for 5 or 10 and then out ward the same way. I have a list 3 pages long of "decongestant exercises for the upper body". I could probably scan and post here if you want a copy.

Hi HomeMom,, yes,, I do that for several exercises. a couple for arm focus and a couple for shoulder strengthening. It is VERY slow. But I have made progress over the months. You don't have to do it exactly like I do,, but slow is the way to go.

I would be interested if you can scan the list here!

Maggerle cute dogs. I start Lymphedema therapy April 1/2. It's real simple. My swelling is minimal. 3/4 cm. and I wear compression sleeve most days. If you just finished chemo or rad that could be your swelling. We will have bouts of swelling. Caused by illness, infections, bug bites, eating salt. It's good to use our arms, they told me.Best wishes to you.

Glennie I will scan it tomorrow and upload it.

Maw-maw - I am experiencing minimal issues with it. My hair is doing ok and I'm just a little gimpy when I first get out of bed in the morning or at night if I sit watching tv for too long. Nothing debilitating at all.
