Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

1step. Just rereading your post and Jeannie has a point on push ups and also downward dog pose or anything that overstresses your arm especially if your not use to the activity. If you have been doing these all along and are fine with no le symptoms increases then your probably ok to continue but if you have just started this type of exercise and get sudden increase of symptoms then it is best to discontinue and start out building up real slow otherwise you can overtax your affected quadrant and cause more pain swelling etc.
I started out last sept with one pound weights. Yup I could lift 5 or 20 at least but my arm wasn't use to that in a set or repetition. I am now am lifting 6 pound weights twice a weekwith no adverse effects. Others may be able to progress faster but this works for my unique situation. A study called PAL recommends this to ones starting a program. It looks like your in great shape and if you have no problems then do continue. Exercise is so important to our minds and bodies. The squat challenge sounds awesome, just watch your body careful for any changes then nip it in the bud or should I say nip it in LE butt:)

I am pretty sure that push-ups are what set off my LE,,, it started after I went back to working out, and I was doing modified pushups against the kitchen counter. *sigh* I miss working out. Starting off so slow seems like no progress at all. I was doing good working out for a while, with low weights but felt discouraged at no big progress, like I was used to, so I stopped.
But,,,
saw PCP today. She is like,, you have to get back to exercising. What do you mean, you are not walking?
So after her little lecture,,, I gotta get back into it. At least the weather is not so hot, so I could start walking again. The summer was just too dang hot here.

Glennie. that's sad about what set your LE off. Sometimes we can be our worst enemies when it comes to LE. I believe I set my Le off with a full hand burn and then after preaching to all how we have to be careful in the garden to not overdue it, I went and overdid it this summer and progressed my trunk LE with gardening! Ugh...Sigh...oh well we got to press forward and live right! Just deal with LE /cancer garbage and do the best we can.
I'll be on the kickbutt thread and we all can encourage each other no matter what level we are at. I don't care if we are stuck in bed and can only twinkle our toes. If it's an effort put forward then it's exercise at our own level. Come and post here and we will band together to make a strong force!
Went to gym and did circuit but trainer modified my upper exercises. Was fun and a change from usual routine.
Glennie it's sounds like the weather is on your side . I have dodged the raindrops so far but now am looking at full rain gear to walk in. I guess that's why they call it the "wet" coast instead of "west" coast. :

I recently purchased an exercise series from Deb Seibers geared for over 50 year old people. I like that it is low impact and easy to follow along. You can find it at http://livati.com/ It has several different 10 to 40 minute segments, so you can mix and match to get the length you want any given day, as well as how intense a workout you want. Several times she mentions particular exercises that she is doing as good for the lymph system and flow May be a good option for those of us who will soon be snowed in by winter. Today I did the Intro Stretch and Core Walk sections for 38 minutes of light exercise.

Scooping hard ice cream and grating hard cheese sets my LE off. But it seems to be too much of a PITA to go put on compression just for that (especially if those are “impulse foods”) or to wear it all day when I don’t otherwise need it.

Laural, I will look for that series. Thanks for the recommendation.
Walked 15 mins today! It's a start,,,,,

We spent almost a week in the San Francisco area and I wore a sleeve on the plane going and coming but not while we were there. On the plane back I noticed my hand swelling and started putting it over my head. We've been back a week and I'm still slightly swollen all the way up and down. I've drank tons of water and done my exercises. I feel like this is just slowly getting worse - a year ago I didn't experience any swelling at all and now I can't wear my wedding rings. Should I have worn my sleeve while in SF since it does have a higher elevation - we stayed in Berkley across the bay in the more mountain type area

homemom don't know what ticked it off even salty cafe foods on vacation can contribute. Seek qualified LE treatment assp to get on top of it.
SF shouldnt be that high of an elevation as it's coastal.
Too much sitting with my back pasted against couch can even pile up fluid in my back. I gotta keep moving to keep LE moving.a vacation usually is a bit too much sitting and I have to incorporate more exercise then or I pay for it dearly. Try walking in water past shoulders to see if that will help your swell. Let us know how it's going.
I'm experiencing light vertigo last few days but did go to gym today and had the trainers watch me like a hawk. Doc on Monday to see what's going on. Maybe my recent food poisoning with diahreaha tipped my electrolytes causing dizzy effects. Trying to bring them up. Ugh life sure has its challenges dang it
Glennie good job!
Laurel going to look at the video link you gave right now

hugz - I do need to go to an LE expert. In SF I did walk a lot! 15,000 steps on average a day. I only stopped to go to bed at night lol

homemom wow that's a lot of steps. Hum I wish we knew what ticks our LE off.
Just walked 1 1/2 hours in the forest. I found out I can do my tai chi breather exercise while walking to get my LE fluid moving.

Yesterday I braved the blizzard to attend the first of five exercise classes the Finnishnational cancer society is providing for our local breast cancer group. Hard work, but lots of fun Hopefully this will help me to finally get back to regular exercise

30 minutes of the DVD I linked above...Tone and Walk plus Cardio Walk today with the DVD's with another 18 minutes of running in place to get my 10000 steps in for the day. I have bone scans coming up Thursday. Hoping all this gentle exercise has helped to keep the bones strong

loving all the efforts put in here. Great gadsby...blizzards even can't stop us!
45 walk today didn't want to go but did it anyway. I love how the fresh air cleans out my brain.
Come on let's get a movement going here. Exercise improves lives, even a walk with cane or walker inside your house counts. Each to their own limitations. No competition here!
Have you just had chemo? We've been there and understand ...don't be to hard on yourself,,,,get some rest and then try to get up to look out the window. Watch the birds or see the seasons change. You'll feel better. We are cheering for you

OK so here's my issue now... I've been getting headaches, most likely from the Arimidex, since that's the only thing that is different and this is new for me.... they are the kind that become absolutely excruciating with any kind of physical exertion. I used to do exercise videos, but cannot anymore because of the headaches. So very frustrated because my weight is shooting up again and the LE seems worse too (heck, maybe it's just fat. Painful fat. lol)
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Jennie - I found this for you but there are many pages on lymphedema at Medscape so I'm adding the link
Infections with bacteria and fungi are common occurrences in patients with lymphedema. This is almost certainly due to reduced immune surveillance secondary to lymphatic dysfunction. Recurrent cellulitis or lymphangitis is a particular problem. Constitutional symptoms such as fever, severe vomiting or headache may occur suddenly without heralding skin signs of cellulitis.

Jennie you need to address this with your doctor to find a solution so you can get on with your life. Something out there must be of help.weight gain can worsen LE you should see a qualified therapsit to get on top of it. I feel so bad for your pain. Awful that you can't exercise.there has to be a way to get rid of the headaches. They switched me from aridemex to a like drug when it did my bones in. Nasty but necessary stuff

Oh, I have discussed it...... the MO (who I no longer see) blew me off, refuses to believe any of these crap SEs are from the med, has nothing to offer but "you have to keep taking it". Family doc was sympathetic, but not much they can do. Might try switching to brand name Arimidex and see if things improve, but it costs 10x as much, so tough choice.

Jennie wow 10 times as much!My work ins coverrd my drugs when I was treated but i'm retired now with a awful private insurance plan that is almost not worth having.
Walked 75 min yesterday and will be off to gym today. Loving the cool weather for walking as I'm not sweating like a beast so much

Yesterday did Body Insurance and Tone and Walk DVD's. Today 45 minutes of fast walking through the Air Force Museum with a student who has autism. He made sure I saw every corner of the museum from all levels when possible Also had Dexa Scan today. My oncologist has said that 10 years on Arimidex is now the recommended. I wanted to see how my bones are doing before making this commitment to 5 more years. Are others also hearing this new 10 year treatment recommendation?

Laurel good job on the moving around! I hope dexa scan gives you good news. I finished AI about five years ago and I here 10 is the norm to be on now.
So what happens to us that finished treatment years ago doing the five year regime ? You would think the cancer centre would be calling us to jump on the bandwagon and start AI for another five years, considering I'm so estrogen positive and stage 3 diagnosis. I guess get once I get a recurrence they will put me on. I'm not really wanting that drug right now anyway as it did such a awful job on my bones last time. Hate hate hate itpoor Jennie is suffering so but then we don't have many choices do we!

Hammered out big time on the treadmill today and did my measly 6 lb weights, trying to do super gradual weights to not cause a flare. It's working so far

Hugz, you're inspiring! A friend just gave me her Jane Fonda "Walk Out" DVD as she no longer has a player (also a belly-dancing DVD--hmmmm.) I'll look it over today and see how much I can do. Also, DH just fixed up a used bike for me after years of not riding. Handle-bar basket, cute bell, helmet, good solid lock, and I'm off! Uh, interesting how once around the block reminded we of muscles I'd completely forgotten I owned…
Sigh!

I'm picturing Binney trying belly dancing, good for you Binney. My friend lost 40lbs dancing in front of tv. My daughter did hula dance DVD and was breathless and said what a workout, she was already in shape. Bike riding Binney, Just remember not to be thrown off balance like my girlfriend needing arm surgery. Watch potholes.
Ripped up the elliptical and rowed my brains out today

Way to go, hugz! I am off to water aerobics shortly. It is still my favorite exercise I have supplemented this week with my Body & Soul Praise Exercise tape (that lets you know how old the program is). Still effective for getting up a sweat though. Keep it up all as we head into the season of too much food and too little exercise.
