Weekly Taxol group

I just finished #11 taxol today. I've been trying the suggestions here related to nail issues. I make sure I have dark nail polish on the day of infusion (light does something to the nails) and also a nail strengthener. Then, during the infusion, my hands & feet are in ice ( bags of peas) and I suck on ice to prevent mouth sores. So far, it's worked. I figure it can't hurt me to try & I can tolerate some amount of cold during infusion, just have an extra blanket on! I believe nails falling off would probably be more painful than the cold.

Malakies, I hope all went well with your Taxol #3 today and prayers for minimal SE'S. I did 4 Taxotere and then MO changed me to Taxol which I had 1 treatment and could not do last week due to low ANC and WBC, I had a neupogen shot last Friday and hopefully if labs look good I will do Taxol #2 this Friday. MO said I would have to get a shot after each treatment so that we don't keep having delay's, after surgery, 4 A/C's and hopefully this week a total of 10 out of 16 total chemos, I am really ready to be done with this and move on to radiation hopefully starting in April, then reconstruction in June in hope then maybe life will begin to seem normal again.

Gavinsgrandma... doesn't it feel like there's no end!! UGH! They say 'take it one day at a time' blah blah blah... I have never been 'one day at a time' type.. and its so hard for me to do that! I try so hard to be patient... but all this time on my hands (since I am always tired ) I think ALL the time! And I get depressed, annoyed, angry,... you name it! Thanks for your kind thoughts!! Right back at ya!
SyrMom... God bless you!! I hope everything works out with you and your nails. I haven't done any icing etc. The only thing I have been putting on is Nail Tek II since Oct (the start of my chemo). I was a 'fake nail' wearer so when I took them off in September I had a manicure and started with the Nail Tek II which I bought at CVS. It's been amazing actually. I had weak brittle nails to begin with (of all the year with fake nails) The only thing so far I have horizontal lines that appeared. Faint but visible.
You all have a great night... going to bed.. in hopes I sleep!

hi everyone thought i would join this group seeing that im doing weekly taxol, i have completed 6 as of this week of 12 taxols. I have already completed 4ACs. Ughhhhhhh! Awful. Here are some of my se with taxols managable.
Itchy hands, arms legs. No rash though
I also noticed little red marks coming out on my legs its not a rash, but to tell you the truth my skin is horrible
Skin is sensitive to hot and cold
Fatigued especially first 3 days after infusion
Now has anyone experienced swollen joints, my knee swelled 2 days ago warm go touch means inflamation. I will ask on thursday when i go for my treatment.
I am trying to excercise to get my muscles back in shape especially legs, i found with AC it really did a number in me strength wise.
Anyway i still have surgery to get thru after this

Yes Mercedes I get the bone-joint-muscle pain on days 3-4. I also have a bunch of red marks on one hand that resemble blood droplets. They just appeared one day.
Good luck.

MaryFox - My nails were mostly OK during the treatment though mostly discolored. Toward the end they fingernails started lifting off the nail bed and it's only within the last two weeks (2.5 mo PFC) that they have settled down. I didn't wear anything but clear polish during treatments and this week finally painted them! Both big toenails are raised above the bed at the tips and have been for awhile but they are mostly growing out now. I can't wear certain tight shoes since the tops push down on those nails.
I am experiencing less neuropathy after going to the acupuncturist last month however two fingers on my left hand are very sore and stiff (guessing kind of what arthritis is like after speaking to my dad who has it). Hard to close them and very weak. My chiropractor though is working with me and I will be going to back to the acupuncturist soon as that really helped.

Hi Mercedes 60, good to see a Stage II friend on the Taxol board.
While so far Taxol has been manageable for me, just the fact that I am still doing Neupogen shots means that it is doing quite a number on my innards. I have #9 in 2 days and quite frankly I cannot get through it fast enough.
Mercedes, gotta second that AC did a number on my muscle tone/strength. God, that stuff was awful. I will need months on the Stairmaster to get my legs back!

Hi Cheryl
I just had Taxol (& Herceptin) #8 today. (weekly 12) The most bone pain I get is in my knees but no swelling.
My most irritating SE (since Oct) is the runny bloody nose. Especially when I go from warm inside to cold out & vice versa. I think people in stores & other public places must think I have some awful cold cause I had to wipe & blow so much in stores.

The craziest thing I have with my nails is that since Taxol they're actually longer and stronger than before. I've never had long, strong nails. My whole family have always had thin nails that broke easily and so we never had long nails. Fake nails would actually cause more nail damage. Now my actual nails are very strong..you can't even bend them at all and cutting them requires a lot of pressure. So I finally got the long nails I want but the ironic side is that they're also pulling off of the nail bed and look awful. If I paint them they look beautiful. However, they're actually very diseased and it's strange to have nails that look good but want to pop off like cheap fake nails. So my mother and sister are saying "your nails are so long", little do they know that I might lose the entire nail at any moment. Plus they hurt like hell sometimes. I swear I never know what to expect with this crazy disease.

hello ladies! Well my swollen knee is better and now replaced with hot flashes! Jeez does it ever end, i felt good yesterday so did vacuum, laundry clean this and that made a decent supper. Lol. Funny how just before my treatment i feel great for a couple of days then bam. Fatigue and whatever SE is the flavor of the week.
I went through hot flashes when i did menopause couple ofyears ago, this is weirder like my head gets really hot and it happened this morning when i did some grocery shopping had to whip off my hat guess shocked a couple of shoppers lol. Who cares right
Going for #6 tommorrow.
Vintage #8. Already. Yah. Have u had surgery yet?
Warrior #9. Wow must be getting excited are u done with everything after this?

Mercedes
I had a lumpectomy & 14 nodes removed (2 cancerous) in August. But margins were not good. Small breasts, tumors at chest wall & not much tissue surrounding the mass since I am so flat chested. BS wanted a re-incision but MO & team said chemo asap then mastectomy. So I have mixed feelings about all that. Surgery again very end of Feb, beginning of March perhaps then radiation.

Mrecedes: Looks like I have rads to go after chemo...oh, and recon, too. Really happy that, after tomorrow, that there are only 3 more taxols to go, though.

Had Taxol #4 today and must go back tomorrow for my first Neupogen shot. I had Neulasta with every A/C treatment. I didn't have SEs with Neulasta and hope for the same with Neupogen.

Just finished AC #3, after 4, I have Taxol. My MO said no neulasta with Taxol, but I see many get neupogen, she didn't mention this, do most people get the shot on Tacxol as well? I'm hoping Taxol is better on side effects, I know there are different ones to come, but I'm hoping less fatigue and less crappiness feeling. Also, I see some have hair coming back, yet also the eyebrows and lashes leave with taxol????
Thank you for replies

I did #8 Taxol last week. (of 12) (Started with 2 months of A&C) And for me the side effects have been minimnal, almost nothing compared to A&C & the awful Neulasta shot.
Bone pain is the one issue, for me it affects my knees most. But fatigue isn't a biggie, nor the all over awful flu like feeling I had with A&C & the shot.
Yeah the eye brows & lashes are definitely sparse now. I still have the runny bloody nose but that's been all through chemo. Nauseau & gastro problems are very minimal too. So here's hoping Taxol is good to you.

jackieak, hi, AC are the worst side effects by #4 i was wiped out my hemo count very low, niw i have completed #6 of 12 taxols. My hemo red count is climbing every week. I have never taken any shots as you mentioned, my side effects so far are sore joints knee especially, red marks on my skin, legs especially, fatigue not as bad as AC, itchy hands feet, stomach is sensitive right after infusion, but ok after, taste is not 100% but all is manageable. My hair (well fuzz) starting growing back about 5 weeks after my last AC. Lashes and brows mot growing.
Hang in there taxol much better than AC.

Hi all, celebrated my birthday with Taxol #9! 3 to go! Feeling OK but tired. 49ers on tomorrow; can't wait! Hair is really returning now and eyebrows are coming back too. Just can't wait to be done! Jackieak, for me Taxol has been 100% better than AC...no nausea, much less fatigue, my sense of taste has returned...on and on! Before you know it you will be done! Denise, why did they take out your TE?

warrior70,
It's so good to hear that you are doing so well on taxol and that you are almost done! Great news on the hair and eyebrows too
Today is day 3 after my first taxol. I feel good so far. Even went out to see a movie last night. Hope I continue to feel good. No steriods today so I am wondering if fatigue will creep up on me. So far taxol has been so much better than the awfull AC.
I hope my hair fuzz starts growing too. My eyebrows have thinned a bit but not too bad. Eyelashes are a bit thinner but not really noticeable. Hope they don't start falling out.
Happy Sunday everyone!

Hello Ladies: I have blown up like a balloon (10lbs.) on Taxol. I have two weeks left. I want to start reducing calories (not drastically) to lose the weight while eating healthy foods, but I'm wondering if this is a bad idea while on chemo. I felt good last night and my husband took me out for the first time in ages and I couldn't fit into any of my skirts . I know being healthy is the most important thing, but being fat with gray stubble on my head is bringing me down. I'm so anxious to get the old me back! Anyone else struggling with this?

Hi Septmom, good to see you here! What movie did you see? Great to hear that the Taxol is treating you ok! Are you taking L-glutamine, by any chance? It was recommended by my HMO to help with neuropathy, and so far, I haven't had any (knock wood). Hair is continuing to fill in a bit and it's starting to come back in other places too *cough* armpits *cough*.
Today is the 49ers-Panthers playoff...going to get a bagel breakfast sandwich with the kids before we watch the game! GO Niners! Have a great day everyone!

Yes weight gain happened to me too. It's from the steroids. It will come off after you end chemo. I would lose if I behaved. I ended chemo Dec. 26,2012. I am hooked on sweets again. I hated them during Taxol. All things tasted bad except for cream of wheat. LOL

Warrior70- have fun watching the game! We saw 'The Wolfe of Wallstreet' I saw the movie with my mom as my hubby was glued to the TV watching the playoffs. Must say the movie was a bit too explicit for me taste. But Leo did a great job acting in it.
I haven't taken Lglutamine. I see my doctor tomorrow and will ask about it.
Happy Sunday Ladies!

hi ladies, well ,my knee is acting up again, i do see my onco on tuesday do will ask if its the taxol, im hobbiting around, lol
Today one of my daughters decided to bake cinnimon rolls, which means mom has to tell me what to do, especially shen she asked what does knead mean, oh boy well it was quite the experience but fun, i can actually tolerate baking and cooking now on taxol, compared to when i did AC every smell, taste made me gag. So enjoying the baking with my daughter. And they turned out good!
Stepmom. Yep i seem to be bloated on tacol, my face is flushed and i dont need botox! Lol
Warrior, so far SF kicking panthers butt yeah! Happy birthday glad you are feeling good, we are getting there.

Warrior70 - My Tissues expanders had to come out because I was still producing fluid after 4 months and I believe my body was rejecting them.
My breasts were always red and swollen bordering on infection.
Nemanchec - Me too. I feel like I am doing reverse weight watchers. Every time they weigh me before Taxol I am up another pound. I think it is the Decadron that is doing it.

Sorry about that Denise. wishing you better luck later!

Sorry about the expander removal. I had direct to implant and was blessed to have no issues. I had the bmx in Feb. 2,2013. Finished chemo Dec. 2012. Hopefully things get better.
