I'd like to put in a good word for Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. I think 85% goes to research. She also has an "Army of Women" who can be contacted for research. You get an e-mail about the project and a site to log in if interested. She is trying to enroll as many women as possible. All ages, all races, all states of health. They need as many women as possible for statistical research. Some of the projects are just doing a questionnaire on line. She is interested in the cause as well as the cure.

Thanks Divine, I couldn't find the article at all!!
I was in WalMart today and there is a new T-shirt on the aisle in white that says "Big and small, Save them all!"....sigh.\
BUT, my facebook status today is:
Ah October, the pink month that takes advantage of a very ugly disease - breast cancer - and uses consumers to whore themselves buying pink products! Not everything pink sends in proceeds to breast cancer. In fact, the only thing pink about breast cancer is the 18" scar wrapped across my chest!!!
I got a LOT of comments and even my daughter commented, trying to support the awareness "if even one lady got a mammo" blah, blah, blah. Someone else answered her back, thank goodness!!

I joined the discussion on this thread a bit late, and I don't know if the above link has been mentioned. Am posting it for those who might want to check it out.

I had a teachable moment today in the Hallmark.
As I was walking up to the cash register, I noticed the shelves that held numerous pink-ribbon-themed goods. Some of them indicated "A portion of the proceeds of this sale will be donated to charities that support breast cancer awareness." Other products had no such announcement at all.
At the register, I asked who did buying of the pink products. I called her attention to the above, asking if she knew how much money was donated, and to which organization. She didn't but said she could contact the vendor if I wanted to wait.
I said that wouldn't be necessary, but went on to explain exactly what "Pinkwashing" was, and that breast cancer was a disease, not a marketing opportunity. Two other young women clerks came up to listen in.
They were all horrified that a company would try to make a profit on such a terrible disease without giving something back. They all knew someone who'd had breast cancer.
Since I was in a hurry, I gave them my abbreviated story, and asked them to spread another kind of breast cancer awareness among their friends.
If the product is pink, or packaged in pink, or uses the pink ribbon - especially in October - check carefully and see if they are just profiting off women with breast cancer. I told them the story of Lucy activewear, and that contacting the company to alert them to the fact that you will no longer purchase their product will mean more than just wearing a pair of pink socks. We need prevention, we need a cure, and we need money for funding research.
Then I left. I think they listened.

Sas, Hard Rock has a trademark on the word "pinktober." They've been using it for thirteen years. I don't know how litigious Hard Rock is, but I heard awhile back that Komen was suing organizations for using the phrase "for the cure," and not bc-related, but Chick-fil-a is suing a guy who makes t-shirts that say "Eat more kale." (It's not even spelled the same way as their dumb slogan and they're suing over it.)

does anyone think anyone would use focktober???????????
I know it made quite a statement...especially with that huge pic.
I will smile for the camera.lol.

Cottontail---thanks I was catching up on reading for the last two pgs. I saw your post there and was going to reply after reading all. SO, copyright is dead in the water. Hardrock may or may not want to chase us for using it. But it's way beyond these pages now. It's like Xerox fighting all those years to protect their Trademark. Lots of lawyering, but the word was absorbed into general usuage. ODD----You saved allot of fruitless work. I had already run it under copyright search, but you can't do a similar search on the Trademark site----or else I missed it. Nontheless, bless you I hate to do work for naught.
Mini great words
Stormy thanks for all the stats. Pg 27 I asked a whole bunch of questions, do your answers pretty well cover all those questions
Divine MrsM Thanks
Wren---I will be sending my families cancer tree to her. Thanks oodles
In fact thanks to all the new posters and keep the facts and links coming
