This is an article from Breast Cancer Action

Where Were Women in Last Night’s Presidential Debate? | Breast Cancer Action

It lead me to another link:

Critical Questions for Conscious Voters: How to Think Before You Pink® this Election Season | Breast Cancer Action

The questions are as follows.  To read more on each question, click on the above link.

    1. Does your candidate think more mammograms are the only solutions to the breast cancer epidemic?

    2. Does your candidate believe that women can prevent breast cancer through healthy lifestyle choices?

    3. Does your candidate think access to healthcare fully solves the fact that women of color are more likely to die of breast cancer than white women?

    4. Is your candidate beholden to corporate donors whose practices or products are linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer?

    5. Does your candidate engage in ‘political pinkwashing’ by promoting empty “feel good” activities that win votes and get media attention but do nothing to address and end the epidemic?

Here's what I posted on FB a couple of days ago and got a TON of attention on:

Today in WalMart I saw the latest breast cancer t-shirt. It said "Big or Small, Save them All". I guess I don't pass WalMart standards anymore as I wasn't able to save my breasts! Do the people making these shirts realize that it's the LIFE behind the breasts that count?? Getting tired of "Save the Ta Tas" messages. Imagine if on men's underwear for November we had slogans like: "Don't become a loner - Save your boner!" or "Big or Small, Gotta save the Ball!" or "Don't make me sick - Save the Dick!" I mean, seriously??????? THEN we'd have a problem!!!

Then I added a line where I said: I really mean this...save your penis.

And, believe me, if I hear one more boob joke (breast cancer?  Hey!  You can get NEW BOOBS.  For FREE * chuckle, chuckle*), I swear that someone will have to bail me out for aggravated assault with intent to inflict SERIOUS bodily harm.  GAH!  Was there ever a more patronizing thing to say to a breast cancer warrior than a boob joke?

Hello, ladies.  Glad to find that I'm not the only one who really, really, REALLY hates that damned pink ribbon.

Is it just my imagination or is there less "pinking" this year?  If so, is it because Komen took such a beating after their attack on Planned Parenthood?

Made a quick  stop at our only local grocery store and was pleasently surprised.  The only pink I saw was some pink tic-tacs and a sweatshirt that would have been fine except for the pink ribbon. The message was all about funding real research. Also, it was the first time in Oct in the 22 years we have lived here that the checker didn't ask if I wanted to add $1 to the bill to go to Koman.

I have the all time pink washing award winner. A porn site that was offering to make a donatation to the Susan G Komen Foundation each time someone visits one of their porn site featuring boobs. Is their a porno that doesn't??? Anyway, even Komen refused their money. Apparently they do have some standards. I think the porn site was the same one that held a Tits for Tots fundraiser to buy Christmas toys for kids. Just when I think I've heard everything, I hear something like this. Tongue out

Hi ladies!  Here's a good one for pimping the pink.  Ticketmaster has turned their border pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Not only that but at the top in a banner there is a pink ribbon and the American Cancer Society's logo.  Ticketmaster will donate 10 cents a ticket to ACS, up to $40,000 for every NFL ticket sold.  Really, REALLY!

    Wow. Ten cents. Big spenders!

I have noticed one of our local breast cancer charities use of the word "Pinktober". They do help women going through treatment with housework, childcare, groceries, and transportation. I personally think that's amazing. However, they are so pink it's ridiculous. They are pinking HS football games, the bank tubes in the drive thrus, and various other "boobie" events.

I have noticed the pink backlash from people with different types of cancers also. I had a conversation with a woman who's daughter died from a type of liver cancer at the age of 7. The pinking disgusts her because childhood cancer doesn't get the money that BC does and ACS ignores childhood cancer (according to her).

So not only are we disgusted, but others are getting over it too. I wonder if the local charity like mine, realizes that we could actually be hurting any chance at future funding for a cure by all this over pinking.

Makrat when both my Dh and I were going through cancer at the same time--the only thing the ACS would apply funds for was pain medicine, and it would not do it retroactively, we were told there were no other funds available.

The National Lymphoma and Leukemia Society will fund a grant up to 5000.00$ with a grant application(paperwork). AND it is retroactive to the beginning of there fiscal year. July 1st to june 31st. My DH had Lymphoma. The original app went in May of 2010, was approved with retroactive payments to July 1st, 2009. He was approved for 2010-2011 fiscal year, he died in Aug 2010. Every dime was spent from the first grant, and what was needed in the month of August 2010.

The point being is there is nothing comparable for BC. So, what ever the LLS is doing , how they got started, everything-------How did the LLS get to be so strong that it can do what it does? All other cancers just are forgotten as people fall into the abyss.

When talking with people that have any cancer---tell them to seek out a  cancer social worker, they have knowledge of sources unknown to other healthcare workers. For example, She pointed out a foundation that was only for our two counties, started by a radiation oncologist. The app was the simplest. MO had to fill out a form and a pathaoligist report. --money was designated to  be used only for nonmedical expenses. Mortgage, utilities, taxes etc. For us it meant 2000$ a piece in 2009. total 4000$.  Huge. These sources aren't hidden, but aren't advertised either. We told so many people about this source, plus there was the downard slip of the economy, that in 2010 when Dh 's lymphoma returned they were only able to provide 500$. Did we sniff our noses at that----not on your life----it was thank you, thank you, thank you.

Sas-schatzi, that's incredible that they had the funds for that. Maybe the pinking not only makes people think we are all cured, but also receiving funds like that. I'm so sorry about your husband.

I've just heard this sentiment repeated so much by people that don't have BC "BC month is so annoying. It's a curable cancer". It's hard not to take statements like that personally.

I read it's 108 women per day losing their life to BC. That doesn't sound curable to me. I hope once they get the gene sequencing going they can find the root of all cancers.

There's also the pro football player (the name escapes me at the moment) that is wearing pink cleats and gloves I think it was all month. His mom has breast caner, but he said he would do it anyway. Maybe if the one percent of men that get BC spoke up more it would be newsworthy. That seems to be the criteria for many things to get noticed. I doubt very much that the color of choice would be pink.

Tonight my 13 year old Son will wear Pink socks with the rest of his Midget football team.  They have been doing it for years.  I am sure I am not the only Mother of a player who has had this BEAST grow with in them.  I really am OK with that!  The Cheerleaders pass the bucket & donate to the local groups that provide help for free mammo's & help to people like me that need help with paying the cancer bills.   It's nice to have it stay on a local scale to those that really need!

Ooh, I love this thread.  This was my status from October 1st.

"So it's October, that time of year when Komen trots out a gazillion women in the hopes of raising lots of money from corporations who produce products that cause cancer. It's ironic. And irritating. So Komen, here's a fact for you - 1 in 3 women with breast cancer will die from it. Stick that in your Coke can. And while you're at it, consider doing something to help the women who are suffering with this disease, instead of just using them as fundraising tools."

I agree about Pinktober pissing off people with other types of cancer.  There is a woman in my yoga class whose child is a acute myeloid leukemia survivor - VERY serious form.  Her daughter has been cancer free for 18 months now.  She said pediatric cancer gets NO attention.  She's right.

I picked up two prescriptions for my mom yesterday... they had pink lids... ICK, ICK, ICK.

The pharmacists, who are likely "enlightened" are probably dying from embarrassment.

Well I went around yard sale-ing today in my Pinktober Revolution tee shirt, half-flat, and no one said anything to me. I was so disappointed! I had my spiel all ready to go! I even ran into someone with one of those pink ribbon Ford Mustangs. I thought at least that person would say something to me, but no.

I really do think Pinktober might have run its course, it is very low key this year.

Shells, I thought the same thing until the news last night.  I live in Wash, DC and PG County has had one of their fire engines turned pink with pink sticker material.  The material and cost for that to be done was donated.  The Health Department prepared handouts for the crew if they were asked why pink.  Plus, the crews will be wearing authorized pink fire department apparel and there is a web site where others can buy shirts or hoodies to help raise funds and awareness to fight the disease.  I couldn't find any information as to where the money will go or what percentage of the sales would be given.  Even now while I'm typing this we have a soccer game on and I'm seeing the pink ribbon on the message boards and they are using a lot of pink on it.  Gees, give me a break.

Does BCO sell chocolate bars as a fundraiser? I just saw an instagram picture of one with the name #titcandy. Not that BCO called it that, but really? Why would someone think that was appropriate or helpful.
