I like it - particularly since it's not BC specific. Since one of my sibling's is 3 years out from dx for a different cancer, that matters to me.

Ok, ladies, would like your opinions. Saw this on The Breast Cancer Site:

You have GOT to be kidding me?? You found this on a BC site...wow!

I agree. I hate the whole "think pink" October thing.  Everyone knows that breast cancer exists.  To have my eyes hurt trying to read a pink newspaper or have a store clerk with a pink tie or a football player with a pink shirt-- well, none of that improves the awareness that counts.  There are people who truly don't know some of the symptoms to watch for.  The pink everywhere just makes me want to cry.

When I got an iphone for my birthday 2 years ago, the clerk offered me a pink case that had a pink ribbon on it. I passed it up in favor of hot pink with nothing on it. Grrrrr. Birthday is in October.

Wren, my birthday is, too. I refuse to have 'my' month hijacked by pink. This year, the jack o'lanterns (terra cotta, not real) are going out on the porch on the first. I don't care if it is early!

Yup, Breast Cancer web site on Facebook:

You may be scroll down a bit.

I liked the site because my MO posts great videos, but now I'm thinking of giving him a little call.

I replied that I found it rude and offensive. And you know what most responded: that I don't have a sense of humor! I find nothing funny about this. Thanks, glad I'm not not the only one.

I visited the bra pong site too.  Shocked at the bullying just because people said it was offensive to them.  I left my two cents.   I might not have understood why it was offensive before I got BC but I would have listened and been sensitive.   I can't read comments anymore.  My blood pressure is climbing.  More people saying BC patients shouldn't be so serious, why can't I just laugh about it?

Thanks, clarm, my blood was boiling too. So insensitive. I guess people are just morons to continue something if people (not saying just women, I'm sure there are men too) are feeling negatively about something, just apologize for thoughtlessness and STOP.

    Tacky and tasteless.

  • lyzzysmom

Its beyond stupid and insensitive. Would they find it funny if they were presented with a collage of irradiated breasts or mastectomy scars instead of pretty bra cups to play what looks like a stupid game. When I initially was diagnosed I did not understand the whole pink thing. I even made a pink picture but now I understand a lot more after reading here. I am not going to go look at the comments on the bra pong. I googled and this is not the only one. There were some others out there and I am sure the comments would be upsetting. I consider myself fortunate (so far)  to have been diagnosed so early but it has still taken the last 7 months of my life and I have no idea if I will ever feel it is past or if it will be forever lurking, . I cannot even begin to imagine how hurtful this must be for those ladies that have to live with this horrible disease continually.

Someone should go into a grocery store and load up  a cart with pink items only...make a poster about the total cost of the items and the total amount of donations going to BC RESEARCH....I expect if someone did that they'd spend some time in the local jail..

Hey all.  I didn't know this thread existed, but someone on one of the threads I participate in asked if I could share this here.

Finally something good from all this sea of pink. I saw an insert in my Lands End magazine called The Pink Thread Project.  Oh no .. not Lands End too?   Then I saw this:  "75% of the proceeds goes to breastcancer.org". That got my attention!  So, I went online and found the following info:

"Now through October 31, 2014, a little pink does a lot of good. Lands'
End is introducing the Pink Thread Project, a charitable campaign
created to help raise awareness for Breastcancer.org
the leading online resource for breast health and breast cancer
information and support. By simply ordering and applying one of six
pink thread icons on any Lands' End item that can be embroidered - from
totes and towels to cardigans and shirts - a full 75 percent of the
$6.00 embroidery application fee will be donated
    to Breastcancer.org.
Supporters can take part in the Pink Thread Project initiative from
September 19 through October 31, 2014. To learn more visit landsend.com/pinkthread."

This makes me happy because this site has been such a valuable
resource to so many women.  I know it doesn't make up for all the rest of the pink explosion...but it's a start in the right direction.

Moderators - I hope I am not violating one of the terms of service by posting this.  I want to share this with women who may appreciate it.  If it needs to be removed from the site I understand but I do hope it can remain here.

I'm getting ready to blast it out on FB and I expect this will grab everyone's attention.  If you like it you're welcome to use it.  If you're offended I do apologize.  I would never want to make anyone on BCO uncomfortable.

Eeeeeee, it suddenly got quiet in here or perhaps everyone is busy.  The good news is that my above photo received the attention I was hoping for on FB.  It really is a balancing act to educate people about what is really going on with the funding and at the same time not turn them off to helping.  So far so good.  Tomorrow is the big BC Awareness Day at the college where I teach.  My colleagues are prepared to gag me and tie me to my chair to prevent me from going on a crazed rampage that I could later regret.

Hey All, Just a reminder to take our survey on BC Awareness Month! I

n summary, we have already had 168 respondents to the survey. While most recognize find it important to discuss detection and “prevention”, the month of October appears to evoke primarily negative emotions: anxious, annoyed, angry, sad, frustrated, overwhelmed, excluded to name a few. Overall, respondents wish that there was more of a take home message and education around all the pink and survivorship: what is going on in the research, what could one actively do to prevent/reduce chances, sharing of more stories of MEN and women already experiencing breast cancer, more than one day acknowledging MBC, more clarity on where the money is going. Too much sexualization, silliness, impudent phrases and activities, and commercialization that do not seriously enough represent the seriousness of disease, feelings and experience. There is a concern that the pink and fundraising around it in October is going too much toward awareness, and not enough toward research and help in general for those who have already been diagnosed. There are many comments also discussing if “prevention” really exists, and resentment around that word. The survey will be up all month, so pass along, and we'll provide all findings at the end of the month!! Take the survey now >>

    Thanks!!

Just to add -- there is nothing anyone can do to PREVENT breast cancer.   There are things one can do to reduce risk.  As we all know, early detection does not mean cure.  My wish for Pinktober would be to make the slogan " No one is "cured" until everyone is " cured".  I sometimes think that if all those who have breast cancer (stage 0 - 4) could unite the way AIDS victims did,  resources would be more focused on a cure.  Instead we have " survivors" who say that early detection and mammograms lead to cancer free survival.   As we all know on this board -- not always true.

I'm getting to be like anyone else here that is getting frustrated with the "pinkwashing" of October. To me it seems like its either ignorance or the almighty dollar pushing us to "find a cure" for this disease! I feel as if we who have waged war against BC are being marginalized. I don't own pink tshirts aimed at proclaiming that I am a survivor. All my shirts are of different colors that are related to this disease but give the message that yes I have it and yes I have fought it and will keep on fighting it, or to raise awareness of this disease. I even have a bookmark that proclaims that I am a fighter!

Riverhorse - " No one is "cured" until everyone is " cured" - I like it a lot.

Moderators - I really appreciate the study you're doing.  I did complete it.  Knowing the sentiments of others is a good reality check and keeps me from feeling like I'm going crazy.  It's also a good start for informing the organizers of campaigns of exactly where we're coming from.  People mean well and want to help but the abundance of misinformation leads to the problems you've cited.

  • hopeful82014
    hopeful82014 Member Posts: 887

No, there's nothing anyone can do to prevent bc - I would like to see more research directed towards understanding what triggers it, including environmental factors, and possible prevention via elimination or control of any triggers that are eventually detected. In that sense, I think 'prevention' is worth adding to the list.

I'd also like the public to understand the difference between detection at early stage and prevention.

WW - I don't usually use the f word but I'm not offended in the least by your post. Just because I don't use the word doesn't mean I don't think it and think it I do in relation to cancer.

I remember literally having my mouth washed out with soap when I made the mistake of using that word within earshot of my mother! So since then when I hear it I cringe BUT funny enough since the cancer diagnosis I have used it many times! I've become a potty mouth!! I think it is appropriate. I don't even give "cancer" the correct spelling when I have to write it. For example on my binder with my medical stuff I have the label "Kanser crap". I don't give it any respect.

Here is a really disturbing ad - Bob Mills Furniture in Oklahoma and Texas currently has an ad running saying not getting a good night's sleep can cause breast cancer. Grrrrr. I just sent them an email telling them how insulting that is.
