I recently read Barbara Ehrenreich's 2001 Harper's magazine essay Welcome to Cancerland: A mammogram leads to a cult of pink kitsch. http://archive.bcaction.org/PDF/Harpers.pdf
It's thought-provoking, intelligent, insightful and well-balanced article that remains very relevant today, some 13 years after it was published. The author describes her own experience with her diagnoses and treatment with a wry sense of humour. One of the more interesting angles of the article to me is the "shop for the cure" marketing campaigns of high profile brands, that is thinly disguised as breast cancer awareness, and sponsorship from corporations that contribute to toxins in the environment.
I'd love to hear what others think after reading it....

Just want to add that I've gone back and read the last couple of months of posts on this thread and I am really enjoying the refreshing honesty here.
I love the T-shirts that Spookiesmom and momof2doxies have created and am inspired to make one of my own. I hope I can come up with something as clever and honest as you two.
Librarian ~ I ❤️ your pug. How could I not? I grew up with pugs and my husband and I finally have a little one of our own! She's a rascal and she's stuck to me like Velcro. She's staring at me right now, with that typical pug expression of concerned indignation.
I can't remember who started the topic on the feeding program, but it's so relevant to me because I work in a long-term care facility. I think the idea of having every employee participate in the program is so smart....and so achievable. We're anticipating some major cut-backs and I fear that this is one of many things that will be further neglected at my workplace. The health authority that partly funds the facility wants more 'direct contact' with the residents, but with the cutbacks there will be fewer employees to provide that contact. Contracting out to people that will accept lower wages and fewer benefits is inevitable and most likely I will lose my job during the course of my treatment. I have what I think is the best job in the facility. I work in the art studio and I oversee the weaving program, which involves setting up projects on our nine looms and teaching mostly 90 year-old men to make cloth!
To the person who wrote about Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington...omg, I'm originally from Burlington. All of my siblings were born at that hospital. Very interested in knowing more about their volunteer recruitment program! My dad volunteers at the facility I work in and is now the president of the volunteer society and we're desperately in need of more volunteers. If you have any links or advice to share please feel free to message me!

Lucy - I always thought it was my genes that caused my cancer when it was a restless nights' sleep all along.
I survived the BC Awareness campaigns at work today. I did lose it when they repeated said that the money was being raised for research. After correcting that several times, I did lay into them that it is unethical to claim that you're raising money for research when only 16% of it is actually being used for that. As we have a fairly tough ethics code, my statement finally got through. We're raising money for awareness because goodness knows we do not have enough awareness. Anyone want to buy a pink cupcake?

Ilovepugs. Pugs are such sweet dogs. Hi I'm sassy, the one that wrote about the Feeding Corp. I too believed that it is an easy thing to do. Not only would the patients benefit. The employees that didn't have a direst patient care activity, I believe would have an amazing response personally once they became involved. Regretfully, never got to the proving point. If you are able to get something started and need someone to bounce ideas off of, I'm here
I pretty well wrote the outline of how to do it. But never got to complete the package. There may be holes in the plan that I hadn't considered. LOL, the first hole was I couldn't conceive that it wouldn't fly. I did consider whether I could have done a better job of presentation. I think if I had asked to do a presentation myself to the upper administrators and then, also, to the volunteers that may have caused a different response. The initiator of anything new is always the most enthusiastic. I likely could have fielded questions better than what each group came up with in their own discussions. My sense of the response was they weighted liability the heaviest. I would have outlined how liability could be reduced by the educational aspect that each person involved would have to complete.
Beth that add on bras is insulting on so many levels.

Yeah, I emailed them. I was polite. I mean, I am SURE they mean well, but the wording really needs to be changed for NEXT Puketober.

I emailed them, too, and was very polite but did express my hope that they would deal with the situation differently next year. It will be interesting to see what, if any, response it elicits.

In the topic box of that thread., I identify the thinkbeforeyoupink.org. The questions, I received permission from Breast Cancer Action for us to use their copyrighted material to evaluate organizations. They thought it would be great for someone to actually apply the questions.
Hey, anyone wanting to evaluate an organization. I'll make a plug for it now. It's work, but it can be fun too. Great learning experience.

2ta--the first link Kretzer who is the author, not happy with her facts. Don't think I have the energy to track. I think she's playing fast & footloose with info. It plays into our ideology, but is what she saying true. PETA does not have a good reputation for truth. First fact that made me concerned. Think Before You Pink Is a registered trademark thingy of Breast Cancer Action out of California (see link in topic box to list thread). She credit's another organization.Throwing around the animal testing fears is what PETA does. Just b/c they say it, doesn't make it true. That's where the research gets very in involved. Following all the breadcrumbs(Hansel & Gretel). To follow the breadcrumb trail is Not easy. It can be done, but it's work. As much as I learned by evaluating the few organization I did. I learned what I just said---It's work to validate info.
The second link, sounds very good, but the involved person needs to pay to get the results. That sucks. I have 19 female cousins & 3 aunts on paternal side. Of 21 women, 9(10) have had BC. 3 with other cancers. I wrote Love's outfit months ago with a complete description and got no response. Perhaps this is the response. May be she got Einstein SOM to do the research for those of us that are non BRACA.. I'm just not fond of the idea for paying for study results. Not sure I've heard of this approach before. But it goes back to researching the facts. Oh Vay. Overfilled with dinner, never try to think after a full dinner.

I have never heard of study participants paying for research results before. The customary practice is that if you participate in the study you automatically get the results for free. Period.
