Confusedandtired, if you read carefully, many, many of the above posts are single posts from women who were worried but were never ultimately dignosed with cancer.

My breast cancer hurt and grew rapidly. In all of my years working in healthcare and in most of the legit materials about breast cancer, those symptoms generally are a fibroid/cyst.

My recurrence hurts even more (growing into the chest muscle) and is the reason it finally was examined - I kept pushing that I was in constant pain.

Hello! I was very happy to find this forum. I have a lump in the upper outer breast that is very tender. I am postmenapausal at 41 and am on hormone therapy for a year and 3 months. I also have sharp needlelike pains every so often in that breast and it feels like the pain aches deep in my breast like to my back. I talked to my doctor and she sent me for a 3D mammogram and ultrasound. I have heterogenously dense breasts. The report showed not cysts, masses, or malignancy although both the doctor and radiologist felt the lump too I am still very concerned because this just doesn't feel right. I called my doctor and told her I wanted to find out what is causing the lump and pain. I was told too that it was likely nothing because BC doesn't hurt. She agreed to refer me to a breast specialist. Any advice on what I should ask for from the specialist? I am really concerned. Thanks so much for reading this and for sharing your stories. I was beginning to think I was crazy because that's how the radiologist and doctor make me feel.

Good you are checking it out. For the record my BC didn't hurt but my sister's did so to make a general statement like that is simply not true.

I would be persistent about the lump. There are scores of women on this website who didn't take no for an answer and in some cases it saved their lives.

    Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Notsosure this is exactly what I'm currently dealing with. Palpable lump, constant dull ache with random shooting/sharp pains, and no visible cysts or other abnormalities on mammo or u/s (save for a very dense tissue area where my lump is located). Waiting on a call back from the doc as I've requested an MRI or referral to a breast specialist/surgeon to investing with fuether

The pain was so bad it sent me running to my pcp who sent me across the street to do a mammo that day and then u/s afterwards. Biopsy the next am. Remained pretty much in pain for 2 mo until sx. Not a pill popper in general so I gutted through it.

I had pain months before but I had heard bc there isn't pain. I was at menopause door and my mom had painful breasts at my age so I chalked it up to that. Had I moved on it sooner perhaps my stage would have been lower.

A year and a half before I was diagnosed with Stage 3 BC and a 6 cm tumor, I had stabbing, bee-sting like pain in my breast.

Every night I would Google it and find out the same thing - pain isn't breast cancer.  Now it is one of my missions to inform

women (and men) that yes, breast cancer can be painful!!

I agree with you 100%! I had a lump that was painful, and I researched on the web. Every website just about said that breast cancer lumps are not painful. Well, obviously they can be! Mine felt like tiny sensations of shooting pains every now and then which I was lead to believe it was only menstrual pains.

I am waiting to start neoadjuvant chemo next week. My tumor feels like it's growing. It feels painful and heavy. I, too, feel the sharp, shooting pain, every once in a while. Can't wait till this f#*ker is out of me.

I went to my Dr. yesterday to have her check pain I have been having for a few months now in my left breast. I found it when I leaned on something and got a shooting pain. It has been constant whenever I touch it, push on it, lean on it. etc. Sometimes it hurts so bad when pressed, it makes me nauseous. I also have had some pain in my arm pit and neck and collarbone area....not sure how to describe it. No swollen lymph nodes that I can see..just something doesn't feel right. My mom has fibromyalgia so I wonder if it couldn't be that. I just know I haven't felt right for a while now. I go for a mammogram and ultrasound Friday morning. My Dr. said I have a dense mass....but because it hurts and is moveable ....it's a better sign. I'm thankful for coming across this board, but even more worried now :(

Bratella, welcome to BCO. So sorry you find yourself with breast health concerns. In case it's helpful, here is a diagram of the bc diagnostic process:

Image result for breast cancer diagnostic process

Please do notice that the vast majority of women who go for diagnostic workups are told most likely b9, return in 6 months or for routine follow up. Only 25% end up getting a biopsy. And of those 25%, 80% get told that the biopsy was b9. So follow up, but don't dwell on the worst case scenario. Good luck!

Yes, you can have pain in a lump that is cancerous. That certainly doesn't mean it is cancerous. Just get it checked out. I delayed and it cost me because I am in an advanced stage.

Thank you so much! I went today for mammogram and ultrasound. They were focusing on my left breast..because that was where I was having pain and a the Dr. said she felt a dense mass. While performing the mammogram, the radiologist noticed something in my right breast she wanted to look closer at, behind my nipple, no pain. They did an ultrasound on both. Have to wait until probably Tuesday for results. Going to be a long weekend.

I have had a mammo and US both showed nothing however my breast are full of lumps so it's very hard to tell what is normal and what is not. I have had a constant pain in my left breast for months also soreness in left armpit every time I think about it my heart sinks and I cry because I have a bad feeling. My shoulder is also effected. I have an appt with a breast surgeon A MONTH FROM NOW and when questioning why so long and if that's dangerous her exact words are "we're not worried because breast cancer doesn't not hurt" I'm so scared I often feel suicidal because the thought of mehavinf this and leaving my two sons still mergin

I've had 2 different breast cancers 6 years apart. The first one aggressive grade 3 Her+ hurt and the Grade 2 ER+PR+ didn't hurt.

I'm not sure if you are talking directly to me....but I also have the armpit pain and the very top of my breast is very tender to the touch. I am hoping to have results from mammogram and US by Tuesday. Trying to remain positive....but it is hard not to worry.

Idk why doctors say that about BC and pain. I didn't have any but I know women who have. My mammo showed one breast larger than the other. The moving around comment I was told is a better sign than if the lump is hard and stable. However, I'm not sure there are any hard and fast rules.

It is tough to wait for the results. We all know the feeling but try and stay busy so you won't dwell on it.

Whatever happens we are all here to help you. So keep us posted and keep the faith.

Yes, both of the breast lumps that I had caused discomfort. I had a stinging burning sensation, as well as pain around the lump. I don't know why a lot of info is out there saying breast cancer never hurts! It can, mine did twice.

Gina88, so sorry you are here with breast health concerns and that it feels as if your breast pain isn't being taken seriously. The comment about your age comes from the statistics. Please see below:

Image result for prevalence of breast cancer in women in us by age

Notice that your age falls within the group that has 1.8% of the cases divided between the 15 years of women represented. So it is possible, just very statistically unlikely. Add to that " my breast are full of lumps so it's very hard to tell what is normal and what is not". Lumpy or fibrocystic breasts frequently cause women pain. Try not to dwell on worst case scenarios when it doesn't sound like the medical professionals who have seen you are overly concerned. Go for your surgical consult, but don't invest too much emotional energy in worrying. Good luck for b9 results!

so...of course my Dr's office Is closed today (the day they were supposed to call me with my mammogram and US results) for training on their new computer systems. I went to medical records to pick up my results. My mammogram showed a 2.5 cm mass like density on my left side and 2.6 cm mass in right side. The mammogram said the results were incomplete and need additional imaging. The ultra sound results came back negative...saying that they masses appear to be glandular tissue and fibrocystic tissue. I haven't actually spoken to my Dr. regarding results yet. I went to the Dr because I am having quite a bit of pain in my left breast....and then they found the mass in the right breast as well.

My friend had an ultrasound show nothing and she kept pushing because she was having pain (like me) and ended up having a Dr do an MRI and she was in stage 3c. it was also in 16 of her 19 lymph nodes. Another friend of mine had a negative mammogram in February and by august had a large mass that ended up being breast cancer. She fought a horrible battle for 7 years.

I don't want to be crazy girl....but I don't want to take any chances either. :-(

Bratella, it sounds like they want to get additional imaging views before they draw conclusions. Sorry you've got to wait a bit more, but it is good to be thorough!

    Hi everyone, first time poster.

I am 31 years old, I had my first mammography 3 months ago with US. They came back normal. I was and still am unsure SO after doing a LOT of reading, I have an appointment on Saturday for a Thermography scan as in all my research they are the best and more conclusive for areas of concern. When I originally had my mammo, they mentioned something similar but pretty much it went like this "we can do another additional newer scan but it's not covered by insurance and costs $60" that was it, NO explanation as to why it's beneficial, NO explanation as to really anything so, when I asked it was "well you're really young, so it's not necessary."

I have had about a year of stabbing pain that comes and goes through the side of my left breast, a small palpable mass that hurts like ***** for about 40 minutes after I find/palpate/come near it and it doesn't come and go with my cycle. I was told I have very dense breasts, when I was very young and again on mammo. I walked out of that mammo and KNEW I had to keep looking because my gut says...thats not it.

I thank all you ladies for sharing your stories as between this page and the thermography page I have learned so much about what doctors DONT know and are seemingly unwilling to learn.

Best of luck to all you ladies!!!

Builtbylron, thermography is specifically NOT approved as a breast diagnostics tool and the FDA has published warnings about that.. They are worthless. Don't waste your money. There have been women here who had "bad" thermograms and had nothing wrong and a woman with cancer with a "good" thermogram who let it go until it was advanced because she believed the test

Interesting thread. I had an initial screening mammogram that showed a small questionable nodule on one view, that could never be visualized on a follow up mammogram. I went 6 full years and had 2 more mammograms that came back totally "normal", no signs of breast cancer. I then began to have bee sting like pains in my left breast, as well as could feel a clearly discernible lump. Went for a mammogram, was told it was totally normal, I even had a highly experienced Radiologist tell me it was nothing to worry about, most likely a cyst.

Of course it continued to enlarge and I requested a biopsy and it was indeed breast cancer. Sitting in my breast surgeons office we were viewing my mammogram and I asked her if she would consider that a " normal" mammogram ?She said yes, entirely normal, mammography is a very in exact science she told me...but, it's one of the tools that we use. Hmmm, next time I had a burning, stinging pain in my opposite breast, I went straight to a breast surgeon, no messing around. A new primary was found in my remaining breast.....that I was told was highly unlikely!

My takeaway advice? Always go with your gut...it won't lead you astray.

My lump is beginning to be felt now that I'm more entuned to it phychologically. I keep thinking it's spreading cancer cells under my arms. I think I have pain under my arms, or that my bras are irritating the areas and start to freak out. Then I look for swelling, but don't see any, but still feel like I am in some kind of pain. It's ridiculous. Just going a bit crazy is all!My surgery is next week - I hope it has not spread.

    Dear vasquezleahregina,

Thanks for reaching out here. Please keep us posted on what you learn. We are hoping that it will turn out to be a negative result. Worrying for test results are so stressful. Try not to leap to the worst possibility. The Mods
