Ducky, I agree. If it can work for kids I don't know why it shouldn't work for dogs. With all the suffering Stella is having to go through it's worth a try to ask about it.

Spookiesmom, I used to take Benedryl every night to help me fall asleep. Eventually it stopped working for me, and now my Dr. prescribed a muscle relaxer. It's like knocking me upside the head with a brick. I sleep so much better now.

Interesting reading Bren. I hope Ducky passes the info along to her daughter. It sounds so promising.

Dozer is so cute!  How old is your granddaughter?  I have two grandsons in San Diego ages 7 and 11.

    hugs everybody,

He is really a good looking dog GMA. I hope he is calming down with the wildlife.

Bren, I am not too far from your grandsons. I am in between LA and San Diego. Do you ever come to California to visit??

Slow ... I am so freakin' jealous.  Yes, I try to see my grandsons twice a year, but sometimes I can only make it out in April to babysit them while they are on spring break.  This time of year with the all the ticks and the humidity ramping up really makes me miss San Diego.  My family lives about 10 minutes from the beach in La Mesa near San Diego State U.  Are you anywhere near Laguna Beach?  Are you on the coast or further inland?  I lived in Temecula for a year before I left California 12 years ago.

I grew up in San Diego ... sure is different living in the southeast now.

Tank is doing well.  He's still being a little picky about eating, so it's back to putting browned hamburger back on his breakfast and dinner.  He is really scared of the thunderstorms we get here.

Gma .. is Dozer a boxer or a mix?  Sure is a cute dog.  I'm getting used to only having one dog now.  If I want a blue heeler puppy I could get my pick of the litter late this fall.  Just not sure I want another dog.  Tank would probably love it.

    hugs,

    Bren

Bren, I am in the town over from Temecula. I moved here about the same time you were leaving and boy has the population exploded. I live in a sea of houses. I grew up back east in New York, and moved here when I started HS. I spent most of my adult years in the OC. Moving out here was quite a change for me. I like everything about it except the weather. It gets VERY hot in the summer!!

I'm glad Tank is doing well!! I can picture him pretending to be picky so he can have hamburger on his food!! hahaha He sounds VERY smart to me!!!

Bren, yes, he is a Boxer mix - a lady with ALS rescued him - but she couldn't handle 2 dogs. She has a dog that assists her also. She took him from a "friend" that had him chained and starving. She put a good 10 lbs on him before she offered him to us. Never having a big dog, I have had my trials with him.

Slow - Dozer is doing better with greeting people at the door. We were kind of concerned when we brought my 14 year old granddaughter home. But we had an idea and it worked. GD picked out a new toy for him. DH, GD and I all came through the door together and he made 1 bark sniffed her and took the toy. Been best buddies all week. Then, later on this week, the tree trimmers came to the door and Dozer slipped by me Bawling BUT he greeted him with a sniff and came back in - 1 bark and sniff and he was fine. Loopy As long as you don't grab at his collar, he seems to be fine, IF he isn't already agitated - I think.

GMA, great idea about the granddaughter. He just accepted her as one of the pack! I can see where he could be a handful. He looks like a big, strong dog. It's nice that he barks at strangers though.

People are typically afraid of my younger dog. He has a really mean bark when people are walking by. He really is a sweetheart though and I don't think he would hurt anyone.

Looking for advice and tips on how to walk the dog in the first couple weeks after BMx.

I cannot deny her, but I'm scared about her pulling on the leash. She's just a little 2 yr old, 18lb pug and I usually take her out for 1 to 2 hours, twice a day. It's not continuous walking, she just likes being out there for a nice long while and resists heading in the direction of home!

My husband works 12 hour shifts, starting at 6 or 7 in morning to 6 or 7 in the evening. Or vice versa for graveyard shift. So, it's not an option for me to wait until he gets home. And if I don't get out with her at least once, she gets feisty and jumps all over me.

she is so cute!!  Have you a friend or neighbor who could help you out with walking her? Perhaps that person could hold the leash and you could stroll along when you are feeling up to it.

Thanks Glennie, that's a great solution! Rarely will she go for a walk alone with my husband if I'm at home, so this really is an ideal option.

i have a 68 pound baby,,, (see avatar) and there was no way I could walk her after surgery. I enlisted many people so that no one was overwhelmed with walking her. She goes out to potty 4 times a day,, as I live in a townhome and do not have a yard. One neighbor did the morning walk,, another friend came in the afternoon, etc etc,,

Aw, she looks like she just came back from a walk in that picture! I can't quite tell, but she looks like a Staffy or a Pitt Bull. 68 lbs is a lot of dog! Does she sleep in your bed?

Actually she was laying on the ground outside the ice cream parlor, hoping some little kid would drop his! She loves to do clean up duty. She is a bulldog/pit bull mix?  Her body is that of an English bulldog,, short legs and very stocky. She can't jump up on the bed, so she sleeps on a nice plush LL Bean bed next to mine. I've always had big dogs.  One time I had a Lab who was 80 lbs and a mutt who was 70 lbs,, together they weighed more than I did. Thankfully, I had a yard back then so I didn't have to walk them!

The picture of that pug is just adorable!!

I had my young dog DNA tested, and they told us his major breeds are Pug and Russell Terrier. His distant breeds are Rottweiler, Australian Shepherd and Alaskan Malamute. That poor boy is all mixed up.

Glennie, your big guy sleeps in luxury!!

Edited to add: You may want to check if there are any doggy walking businesses around you. That's starting to be a big thing now for people who work all day and can't take their dogs out.

you might look into if there is a dog park nearby, if you are driving yet. The dogs can socialize and run and play. And usually there's some nice benches for the two legged.

Thanks for posting the articles FDM.

Hmmmm....that totally conflicts with what our vet has told us to do all these years. We typically give him Benedryl and it does calm him down but doesn't make him sleepy. I think I may have to get a second vet opinion!! I hate conflicting info!!!

Slow. My Aussie had spring allergies to pollen. He was 62#. He got 100 mg Benadryl, never slowed him down a bit. Not sleepy, drunk, nothing.

Vulfie matured about 18 months old. Before then, he was THE WORST puppy I ever had. He lived to be 14 1/2. My heart dog.

If anybody feeds Stella and Chewies food, there has been a recall on it for listeria contamination. Check out Dog Food Advisor.
