Thanks ladies. Today I could hardly walk after sitting! To say that I overdid it would be an understatement. I decided no swimming today. My muscles needed a break. Was it worth. Oh yeah! This place requires days of exploring so I only scratched the surface. My interest in this place peaked when I realized they had waterfalls in the canyons. However after more researching it has to have recently rained for the water to fall. I figured since we had so much rain this spring that there would be no problem but I guess it doesn't work like that. I would have liked to have explored those canyons but there were so many trails and I took the shortest ones and had no idea what they were. Of course you don't realize that those half milers are half stairs. I was so tempted to turn around and go back but I kept running into people coming down and I kept asking how far up is it. I am glad I made it to the top. The view was so incredible that it made it worth the trip.

This photo contest I am doing is turning into more than I had bargained for. They want printed pictures besides the digital copies and an entry form handwritten for every single entry. I am submitting ten which is the max. The deadline is next Friday so I have some fast work to be done to get in the mail. I'll post some of those once I have submitted the photos. I am giving away the rights to them so I am not sure exactly what that means as far as me continuing to post after I have submitted. The whole copy write thing is very complex. It certainly was in the music world and I guess this is the same thing.

This was from another hill we climbed and I kept asking people coming down how much further to go...

I think we were at 7,000 feet...hard to breathe..

Lisa, beautiful country. I remember when I was at an International Clarinet Clinic in Denver we did some side trip traveling and were pretty high up and I couldn't breath. I certainly know what you mean. I doubt if I could ever live at those elevations.

I had a friend who went skiing in Colorado many years ago and ended up having to sleep with oxygen, despite no health problems back home.... what an absolutely gorgeous scene and photo thoguh Lisa.

Nancy, I hope you are getting on well with you contest submissions. Seems a bit odd wanting prints in this day and age, especially as every printer produces something a bit different, unless somebody is VERY expert in calibrating everything and setting up printer profiles.

Its so rainy and miserable here today. I took a flash photo of one of the flowers in a bunch from the grocery store, just because it was cheerful!

Lizzysmom, Will you promise to post that again around February. SmileOf course we can probably depend on Lisa to give us great flower pics all year round! That flower is certainly cheerful!

Yes, this photo competition was really a burden by the time it was all said and done. If fact I am still going to be donating some shots but those are digital and no deadline but they still require this waiver of rights even on those. One of my favorites of the ones I sent in the printed version was quite disappointing because it came off with a different hue than what I saw on my monitor. I didn't go to the same place as where I got my swan photo done. They would have probably been more professional but I didn't have time to do that. My swan family will be done hopefully in a few days to pick up. I can't wait to see the end product. I might be framing another one that I took for the contest but it will be me doing it and not professionally done. Just way too expensive.

    Off for a coffee break.

Nancy, One thing I found is that depending on the settings on a camera the photos may be taken in sRGB or AdobeRGB( or something like that). I have one camera that I set to each. srgb is better for web posting and I just found that by saving the adobeRGB pics as SRGB they uploaded to national geographic with better color. I also got a Spyder from Amazon so I can calibrate my computer screen to more accurately reflect what others may see. The difficult one is the printer bit. I save photos to be printed as adobeRGB as the camera. photoshop and a decent photo printer can give a broader range of color than the web, at least thats my understanding BUT getting it to actually work is sooo difficult. I thought I had it just about worked out and then my pics looked a bit washed out again on my printer so I had to fiddle around with the colors in my printer software to make them brighter...... a constant battle LOL

Can't say I really like the idea of giving up rights on you own photos but getting them displayed would be a thrill!!

I've only seen mountains in pictures.  What a view!

Thanks Marple. I think you are referring to the Illinois photos. Yep we are known for flat lands but places like this change that perception a bit. No mountains here for sure.

    Lizzysmom,

Yeah that giving up the rights sort of started bothering me a little bit. I would have liked to have saved a couple for the newspaper contest after they had long forgotten I won in August. Oh well. I am just an amateur and even though I have a big desire to improve my skills I don't plan on making money on my photos even though it is kind of fun thinking about that.

When I bought my SLR camera I took a personal day off from school which I had rarely done up to that point. They were having a free workshop on my new camera and it was very helpful. The guy basically talked us through changing the settings of the camera from the factory default to what he thought was a better option. I haven't even looked into the color settings to see what they are and I don't remember. At that time I was so green that I had not a clue what I was doing with this professional camera as some deemed it to be. I have probably taken more pics in the last four months than I have in the past four years. I just hate that winter is coming. I don't know how photographers deal with the cold and I am not sure if you can change dials and push buttons with gloves on or not. I do know a coworker who was really into photography told me about using a shower cap when it was raining. I haven't pursued that either. You'll have to tell me some winter tips if you have any. I have taken some winter scenes but I am not out for long and I don't have gloves on which is not very practical for long periods of time.

Thanks for the tips on the color settings. I will have to look into that.

Nancy, I dont look forward to taking pictures in the winter. After the initial snow I start to long for a pop of color so I like the birds and also try to get to Florida for a week or so for some warmth and color. If I can get my energy up a bit I will try practicing some of the indoor shots I need to do to progress with the course.

Winter before last I took my camera out in a snowstorm. I could not wear gloves so I tend to stop when my fingers go numb but I put the camera in a plastic bag in my shopping bag. I put a hole in the plastic bag for the lens to peep through and could keep most of it from getting wet when I took it out of the shopper. I walked to the center of town which is not far all wrapped up and had a go at taking night shots while it was snowing. I didn't really know what I was doing and and stood there messing around and getting very snowy but I was pleased considering it was a horrible night, much worse than the photo shows This is one I took. The shutter speed was a bit slow so it was not that sharp. I just brightened it a little in photoshop so the light in the church was a bit warmer. I have a better one but it says Merry Christmas and its a bit early yet!

Lizzysmom, That's really pretty. I like that a lot. Maybe I will give it a try this year. I usually go out when it looks like a winter wonderland and the snow has stopped.

I'm enjoying all of the beautiful photos, ladies & hope to get out and take some soon, too.

I'm getting a large group for the December holidays this year and I was lagging on home repairs since BC consumed all of my time last year. I've got a lot to catch up on!

    I hope everyone's doing well.

Kelly, yes bc has taken up far too much of our time!!! I am looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful photos.

GG, Gorgeous hibiscus!! Mine are long done for the year so its lovely to see the color on such a miserable day here. First snow flurries of the season. Everybody was pleased about it actually as Pats are playing Denver at football at home and they do better in bad weather!

Kelly, They had a picture of Crater Lake in our paper a few days ago about how people have defaced the national treasures with graffiti and such. Someone had painted this ladies head in bright blue around Crater Lake. I thought of you out there in the night shooting away at the stars. Did you happen to see that blue head? From the air it is quite noticeable. They were talking about how painstaking it was to get rid of stuff like that. Good luck with your big gathering for December.

GG Beautiful hibiscus. I just threw my yellow ones out this past week. I don't have any place to keep them inside and I bought only container pre planted plants this year because of bc. I ended up with four of them. Two different varieties. They became one of my favorite plants now.

Probably won't be seeing any of these little guys for a while. It is amazing how much they can stuff those pouches.

Heading home from Catalina this evening. A very large pod of dolphins followed us for many miles. I couldn't get a photo. Good relaxing weekend. I'm sure glad to be safely home.

Bandwoman those colors are amazing! What are those flowers front of picture? Mauve and Pale Green, I have never seen those before.

SoCalisa, That takes me back to a lovely holiday I had in California and I took my Daughter to Catalina. It was just lovely and we loved the water transfer to the island. A lot of people were sick, it was pretty rough, but we loved it.

Nancy, Gorgeous photos and colors!! I paticularly love the path , the bridge, and the last one with the reflections. It looks like it may be ornamental Kale with the mumms??

Lisa, One day I will get to southern California again.

Must be getting old. I am making a bucket list that so far includes things like  watching an F1 grand prix in Texas, going to one of those Milky Way shoots like ClickChick, and watching the Patriots play football live! They are only up the road 10 mins so I have no excuse to miss preseason with my camera again next year!

Just a visitor today below. Nancy, this is what I meant by a brick, a block of birdseed. I had run out of regular feed that I was going to put in the feeder in the front yard but as it was miserable and snowy I tossed a block on the deck. Winter is coming. The little juncos were here too yesterday!

Thanks ladies. Ariom, I believe those flowers are ornamental kale and cabbage. They are part of the mustard family after looking them up after your question. They apparently do well in the cool weather because they are quite often paired with mums for a splash of fall colors in our area.

Lisa, Your getaway sounds fantastic. Glad you had a relaxing weekend. I bet seeing those dolphins would be something to see. That is a beautiful pic of the plants. What are the tropical looking plants with the orange at the top?

Lizzysmom, Thanks for explaining the brick. I should do that on those wintery days where I just don't feel like getting out to the feeders. I need boots that go up to my thighs if we have another winter like last. I am on a corner and I seem to get the full effect of the wind and the drifts. I have to walk around to the back of the house to fill my feeders and refill the heater. I got pics of my tombstone in the cemetery today and I was freaking out. The engraving is really awesome. I wanted two trumpet angels on the front and it took several tries before I approved the design. However the pics look horrible. I am hoping it is only a bad printer or reflections as there are three really dark streaks on the front of the stone. I called them and the lady said it was reflections. I don't see how it could be that as I have taken many pics in that cemetery and there are no trees there to make any reflections facing the front of the stone. I won't rest until I see it for myself. It is down by my mom's so I won't be down there until Thanksgiving and it is a three hour drive to my mom's and then out in the country from her.

Your squirrel is so cute. My birds were going crazy today. The different family of birds took their turns all bathing in my heated birdbath. It was the doves, and then robins and then sparrows. I guess they all had different reservation times LOL

Lisa, I missed your last photo while I was posting. I am wondering about those orange things on those palms? It looks beautiful. I am envious! Its cold here today.

Nancy, I like the bricks for the bedroom window as I can open the window and get it into its little cage without a horrible mess. I gave up on trying to pour regular birdseed out the bedroom window!! We got a couple of bags tonight so I can fill the other feeder that is in the front yard now. Its very heavy as it has a sand filled base but I dragged it across the lawn to outside the living room window, not too far from the front path as we too get the worst of the local snow. Whenever they give the totals for our area our town gets the max it seems, so walking outside gets difficult and I wont have to dig too far to get to it!

I will fill it in the morning and hope I get some takers other than the squirrels...

Thanks Bandwoman, I haven't seen them here, but love the look  of them!

Lisa, those palms are lovely. It looks like the seedpods are out, it is a different species, but we had a huge Date Palm in our yard, in the city and when the orange seedpods were there, the birds would arrive and the mess was unbelievable!

Lizzysmom, The squirrels already think they hit a goldmine with my feeders they can get to anyway. If I put a brick on my patio I wonder if I would get a whole family of squirrels.

Lisa, I blew it on the macro lens. I waited one day too late and now my flowers all got zapped. I had every intention of taking some rose pics with it yesterday but had obviously failed to see how low the temps were going to drop on Sunday night. I love seeing how it works with your lovely close ups.

Ariom, It sounds like those orange things on those palms are seed pods. Interesting.
