I use a Canon Sx50 it's a bridge camera. Bigger than a point and shoot, but no lenses to change. It has an 50 optical zoom. I like it.

Hi everyone, I have been MIA for a while. We had a few emergencies at my mom's house when I was there. It has been a pretty crazy time. The Sat. after Thanksgiving I was still at my mom's and I woke up to hearing running water and a waterfall sound. I instantly knew what was going on. I jumped out of bed and the bathroom sink was on full force and overflowing all over the bathroom floor. My mom was in bed asleep. Of course she has no memory of leaving the water on. Two clogged sinks, one of my mom's teeth breaking off.....need I say it has bit a bit stressful. I am having issues with my cancer drug and basically feeling like someone has taken over my mind and I would like it back!

Lizzysmom, Love your fall pics. They look like paintings. Beautiful hibiscus with the dew still on the bloom. One of these days I will pull myself out of bed early and get some pretty pics of dew still on the flowers. Won't be happening for several months around here though.

Nancy, Sorry to hear your Thanksgiving was so stressful. I am putting off making my December Appt with onc. as I have not been taking my cancer drug for a couple of weeks as I thought I would never sleep again. Still having issues as its still in my system but its going to be embarrassing when I meet onc. I intend to start it again at some point but I know what you mean. I want my brain back for a bit.
I dragged myself out of bed this morning to try and get a photo of the Orion rocket when it is launched but its been delayed and delayed. It MAY go in the next few minutes but I could have spent the morning watching birds instead!

Lizzysmom, I hear you on the drug. I thought I could handle the physical stuff and I was but the mental stuff is hard to deal with and the sleeping issues. My drug makes my heart beat much faster than it used to and that is making me somewhat crazy. lol I hope you get to see the Orion rocket. When I get settled in more at home I have to visit the Arboretum that I just joined. I can't wait to see their interactive light show for Christmas. When I saw all the birds listed that they see there I was so excited. I am assuming you are still in your warm place.

Nancy, you will have so much fun at the Arboretum! I am still waiting for my renewal package for Mass. Audubon to arrive. I went to the next level of membership so they are supposed to send me a bird book. Still taking bird pics. The ducks gave me a great show today and I will post them on the other thread. I gave up on the rocket when they scratched the launch around 9:45. Not sure that I will try again in the morning. I took a couple just around the ponds too and I think I got a suitable shot for one of the submissions for my course. They wanted an object outside with the sun directly behind it so I found a glass lamp.

Lizzysmom, I think the lamp was a great choice. I love that shot. Isn't it amazing how beautiful a lamp can be with the right perspective. I would love to be in a warm climate about now. Will be looking for your duck shots. Could you send some warmth up here please

Wow Lisa! Th colors are fantastic, what a beautiful bird.
When I was a kid in Scotland, they used to have Peacocks in the local park, I was terrified of the noise the feathers made when they display and shake that tail.

Ariom, your comment brought back memories of when I was in my teens or early twenties and remember seeing peacocks. I went for a day trip to Warwick Castle with my mom and stepfather as we lived in the midlands at that time and I am sure it was there that I saw them.
Today I saw some geckos during my wanderings. I managed to lose 2 hours this morning taking photos and another half an hour snapping more while waiting for my take out!

What a beautiful peacock Lisa. Blue is my favorite color. Ariom, I can see how that would be scary when they rattle their feathers.
That is an interesting backdrop to the flower arrangement.
Lizzysmom, Beautiful pics. I love the fountain with the beautiful sky as a backdrop. The little gecko is cute. Did you get to see the Orion rocket finally take off? I bet DH loved that stock car experience.
I hope to get to this interactive light show soon and try out some night time pics. I might have a lot of blur but might get some interesting ones.

Thanks Nancy, I never did see Orion. Did not get up in time and I guess I did not miss to much as it was cloudy when it finally took off so not sure that it would have been that spectacular.

Ladies I have a problem to solve and not sure if there is a good solution. At this local arboretum that I recently joined they have this light show which is a mile walk with all sorts of interactive lights going on. I have seen some pictures and it is really neat. My problem is how do I photograph this when I am on this walk. I don't think dragging my tripod along is going to be possible. I have read that the WB should be on Tungsten for Christmas lights and I should raise the ISO from around 400-800 but it is the shutter speed that is the sticking point for handheld pics. Should I use a telephoto lens or my 50mm lens which has a lower F stop than my long lens. Not sure if that will solve the shutter speed issue though. I have vibration resistant lens so that will help a little. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

Thanks Lisa. I looked up monopods and there were so many different kinds and a big range in price. I don't think I have time to get one and as the days are flying by I realize my opportunities to go to this are getting smaller so I need to just go and if the pics don't work out then so be it. Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I saw some videos on them and there can be some interesting other ways to use them and not just for camera shake.0 -
Nancy, are there any benches, trash cans,walls trees etc that you can use to help steady the camera? Thats what I do when I haven't got tripod.Otherwise I would see how noisy your pics get as you up the iso and then see how high a shutter speed you can use with acceptable noise. I would think the 50mm would likely work for a light show and make sure the shutter speed is more than 1/50 if there is no support. If its sharp you can always crop it a bit to make it bigger.
I am back in the cold. It rained like crazy when we got home yesterday and as we got off the plane I heard the pilot say to a flight attendant that is looked like a hurricane out over the ocean. She replied that "it felt like a hurricane in here" LOL

Lizzysmom, Welcome back. Glad you made it back safely. I know the weather has not been good. A good email friend from NY said the kids had a snow day today and will have one tomorrow. I bet you'd like to turn around and fly back. LOL I just asked my neighbor if she would mind if I experimented in taking some shots of their Christmas lights. I tried the house across the street last night and I pushed up the ISO but they have a white background and it really overexposed that. I had my telephoto lens on which I can't get as wide an aperture as with the 50mm which I really haven't used much at all. Haven't been feeling great so I hope I can even make it to the Arboretum before I go back to my mom's. Looking into home health care. Lot's of complicated decisions to make.
Well glad you are back and thanks for the input. I have never been to this light show before so all I know is that it is a mile of walking around their massive trails. I am guessing most of the lights are on trees so taking shots of peoples houses may not be the same at all. Yes, if I could lean up against a tree that would help. We'll see what happens. Thanks.
