Thank you ladies. This is close to the one of ten I submitted to this contest in Nov. Won't hear anything until Feb. I got all dressed in layers to go to this light show on Saturday night only to find out it is a ticket only event and they were all sold out for Sat and Sun night. It has been pouring rain today so that was out. I hate it but I don't think I am going to have time to fit it in before leaving for my mom's this Saturday. I will be down there for three weeks and have been trying to get some home health care in place for her. She is not going to be happy. I had an ultrasound last week on my thyroid and will have a biopsy on Jan. 22 so lot's going on. I am bracing myself for another surgery but hopefully that won't happen.
I bought this inexpensive video course for photography and it has really been great for me. I can learn much better that way than reading all the technical stuff in manuals. After this course then maybe I will be ready for something more advanced.
Love your Christmas presents Lizzysmom. Is that big red one for me? I looked up your Yourshot again today and I couldn't get your photos to come up this time. Not sure what the problem was. I kept getting someone elses shots that kept coming up.
Ariom, your chocolate boxes must be more interesting than ours are.

I saw this Christmas light display in our paper and decided to check it out. I first viewed an online video. The guy who is a music instructor spent hours and hours syncing the singing Christmas trees to music. I decided to use it to practice my night photography. I am going to the light show on Thursday night. It is going to be cold and not looking forward to that part but I am excited for some unusual night photo ops. You can find this house online and the Christmas trees are singing songs from Frozen. It is quite impressive how this man has engineered this whole thing. He has had his house on Good Morning America and The Today Show. His name is Nick Thomas and he is in Naperville IL.0 -
Nancy of course you can have the red one but everyone will have to share the others LOL! I have a few more on Rudolph's sleigh for nearer Christmas!
I do hope that everything works out with your mom and biopsy, just far too much to be going on especially at this time of year.
I love the night shots. On the second one in particular the color really pops. Prime lenses can be better and sharper than others. My 50mm prime is my favorite.
Sorry you may have missed the light show. I messed up badly on Saturday night. I went around 9 pm to the south end of the local lake to try star trails where I could get a direct north view. It was quite cold, not too bad and I set everything up on a tripod outside the local community center waiting for somebody to come and ask me what I was doing there in the dark. Nobody appeared and I retired to the car to keep warm for half an hour waiting for the camera to take around 60 or so shots for me to stack. Well I checked everything, battery life, WB, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, manually focused as its a manual wide angle lens then hit the remote and locked it. When I was packing everything away I realized my big mistake. I had switched my camera to single shot mode a day or two before and forgot to put it on continuous so the remote only took one photo instead of 60.So stupid, I should have checked it but my hands got really cold setting up so I rushed and and my brain is a bit slow these days.It took me a few minutes to realize what i had done wrong. I gave up in disgust at myself and did not go back yet although Sunday and Monday night were nice and clear. Hoping I get a clear night before it gets too cold to try again Bahhh!.

I should have added, Nancy, that if the other photos are anything like that one then I would hope you will get a prize. Its absolutely beautiful!

Lizzysmom, that is a shame about your mistake in the setting of your camera. Believe me I understand. I have been doing such stupid things lately and I think my brain is just on overload. Hopefully you can get another opportunity in a few nights to try it again. I bought this 50mm lens some time ago and really have hardly used it. I love it now. I was so hooked on my telephoto lens that is my default lens that I thought a prime lens would be a pain but it has been great with the wider aperture which of course makes low light situations doable even without a tripod. I can't explain why the colors on my two pics above are so different but there was traffic coming through and I didn't have a chance to set up each shot with my light meter each time. I went during the dinner hour and it was perfect. It was sort of drizzling too and it worked out great for not a lot of people there. I went out on Sat night and practiced some night shots really for the first time. I am finally getting the hang of using the light meter and shooting in manual. I usually shoot in A priority during the day. I am actually learning a lot from this cheap little online course. I am going to the light show on Thursday. I bought tickets online today. It is going to be cold and this should be an experience I hope to live to tell about. LOL
Thanks on your nice comments on my fall shot. I wish I had sent this one instead of cropping out the lifesaver tube. I debated a lot over that and now I regret not sending this one. Oh well. I am learning and having fun with it.

Does anyone know about mirrorless digital cameras?

I finally made it to this interactive light show. I am still thawing out. It was 90 min of walking outside to see all the attractions. They had recordings of the Chicago Symphony which made it all the more special for me. It was pretty neat but very, very challenging as the exposure was constantly changing as the lights were constantly changing. Here are some that worked.

Lisa, we must have been posting at the same time. I have read about them. I think some of the major brands have had them out for a while. It is a whole new thing. I can't remember now what all I read. There were of course pros and cons. That is a nice cemetery shot. What I would give for a nice sunny day. We have hardly had any sun for weeks.0 -
Bandwoman, I meant like these. I don't know if they are as popular these days.
The lightshow pics are beautiful!

Nancy, love the light show pics. I am so glad you made it there.
Lisa, I don't know if its the same thing but my Sony cameras have a translucent mirror that does not move. Other than that they look just like a canon or a Nikon but a little lighter weight. They are very fast and my new one is capable of up to 12 frames a second as the translucent mirror does not move unlike a regular DSLR .I find them a bit noisy at high iso. They have an electronic view finder which gives a very good idea of the pic before you take it. The disadvantage of the translucent mirror is you have to be extra vigilant about keeping it clean while changing lenses as it is very difficult to clean without damaging it and it is a $100 cost to get it replaced.

Here are a couple more festive pics that I took when I was down in Florida. We stayed one night on points at the Gaylord Resort in Orlando. It has to be my favorite hotel with all the tropical plants and critters in the atrium (4 acres) in additional to the seasonal decorations.

Thanks Ariom and Lizzysmom.
Ariom, I don't know if I have seen any chocolate containers like that at least in the States. I haven't eaten sugar for almost 14 years and it isn't anything I buy so maybe they are here and I am just clueless. That could very well be the case.
Lizzysmom, those pics are beautiful. That sounds like a neat hotel.

I was just looking at the winners of the 2014 Mass Audubon photo contest if anyone is interested, some stunning shots. My favorite is the chicks.

Hi ladies,
I am at my mom's for three weeks and setting up some home health care. I am under the weather at the moment and have had a touch of stomach flu. The Audubon pic winners were really neat.
Lizzysmom, I love that winter scene. We are expecting some snow tomorrow. We have not even had a shoveling event yet. Very different from last year.
Lisa, love your bird close up. What kind of bird is that? Some type of Egret?
Hope everyone has a good holiday season.
