Magiclight. . .I HOPE we have a great time at the swamp. The 2-bedroom cottages are new and really nice. BUT, we are traveling with a 19.5yo and 13yo and are forewarned that there will be very limited cell coverage and only one place they can go for wifi. Could make the evenings interesting. We are a hi-tech bunch. Lots of DVDs I guess.
What filter do you use to slow down water movement? I would love that as I'm I will be doing some waterfall hikes this fall as well. Both great pixs you just posted but really love the second one. I'm totally into unique/abstract as well.

Scottie, I have a NDx16 (Hoya) digital filter that I use when water is in bright light and want to get a very slow shutter speed - I also have a neutral density n16 split filter. With both of these I have to use a tripod. I'm not very savvy with camera terminology and when you asked about the filter I had to go find it to refresh my memory. I'm getting to be like a slow computer - lots of refresh and reboot
I think you may have lots of stories to bring back from your non-tech vacation.

SoCal: what a great trip that must have been. I've been there a few times and I must say your images are beautiful. Brings back great memories standing above the winding trails and then venturing off to descend. I did not get to bottom - maybe next time. I'm working on creating collages, yours are awesome. The monument valley images with the black background really pop.

We were only gone for a week. But we drove 2,000 miles and stayed three days in Moab UT. The Colorado part of my family was there for a family reunion
The last time I was in Zion and Bryce, the smoke from the California fires reached all the way there. And we had no route open to drive home.
I used to make collages with tilted pix, but now I usually use the ones like the ones above. Less confusing for my chemo brain.

SoCal: P.S. like the panoramic images - did you use that setting on your camera or stitch photos together (older camera models)

magic. On those I just cropped them that way.

SoCal: great job cropping - a fine image.

Magic, this one I stitched, it's the valley that Lake Louise is in..you can see it in the right hand part the little blue lake

This one was stitched as well, it is San Diego after snow in the mountains

SoCal: you are an amazing photographer, getting out there frequently in so many places and I'm sure in every season that you have experienced the message of Dewitt Jones - my favorite photographer/poet/philosopher
"There are times when wind is howling
and the ocean is roaring so loud
you can't hear your own cries of delight.
When layer upon layer of beauty press on you with such force
that you barely have the courage to press the shutter." Dewitt Jones0 -
Thanks Magic..I really only took up digital photos after my breast cancer treatments. So now I look for opportunities to take pictures. I don't have any fancy stuff but I am glad you like them.. I have tens of thousands..yikes just in the last ten years..
but that view of Lake Louise took my breath away..I rode up a ski lift in the summer..
There was no way I could do it justice..
The one of San Diego, I knew it had snowed and from my house the air looked clear., which is a rarity in the mornings so I took off for Point Loma before anyone else got there...I knew there would be a crowd..

Loving all the pics ladies. The Red rocks are so beautiful. Have been having a time with my AI so I am disappointed that I haven't felt like going out and taking pictures lately. I hope to learn from you experienced photographers. I love the water reflection pics too.
Lisa, how is the arm coming along. Any changes?

Nancy, I am thinking I am going to have to have the rod put down the center of my humerus..I don't think it is healing but I will make the decision on September 14th when I see the trauma orthopedic surgeon and the xrays... I am really discouraged..sorry to say..thanks for thinking of me. I don't know what to tell you about the AI except I had a hard start but it eased some with time. I must say I was so happy to finish the five years..and when the onc asked if I wanted to take part in a clinical trial to do ten years, I said no thanks...

Lisa: So sorry about your arm pain and the impending surgery. Cutting back on activities due to pain and then having to wait a month from now to see surgeon to discuss surgery would certainly make anyone discouraged, frustrated, and downright antsy to get moving along to feeling better. Can you still use your camera? If yes, please share pics as you take them, if no, please share some taken earlier - they brighten my day.

Lisa, I am sorry to hear about the possible surgery. I was still hoping for a miracle that it would start healing. If you have to have the surgery I sure hope it goes well. I felt better today. Moved the AI to later in the afternoon for a couple of days and maybe it is helping. I made myself go out and shoot today and it was a good distraction. I have been wanting some bee pictures but there is a slight problem. I am scared to death of them. LOL At least these weren't flying at me.

Nancy: Good to hear you are feeling a little better by changing the time you take AI. I am not taking that rx so can't suggest other options.
Getting out with a camera is good therapy, as you say a good distraction. I expect you did not set out to get a bee photo but this one is a keeper along with the butterfly. I've been shooting for a while and just learned a new term for small depth of field or blurred background --it is bokeh. Well, your use of bokeh works very well in the butterfly photo, Maybe next time avoid the bees if they are in flight. Don't need to add an injury caused by a quick run away from them.

Thanks Magic. I have had trouble for over a year on my AI and I have moved it all over the map to see what part of the day works best. Still searching. I have always wanted a picture of a bee so I went to this Arboretum a few weeks ago and there were bumblebees everywhere. However when I tried to get too close they would fly at me so I didn't stay there long. LOL I was determined that I was going to get a good pic of one so actually I was seeking them out today. It was a different location and they were more intent on flying from flower to flower than flying at me! Yes, bokeh is the term. I did a ton of studying up about photography and my head knowledge at one point surpassed my practical knowledge of actually going out and shooting. I took some classes this year and that really helped to pull things together but they were workshops with tons of material crammed into a very short time frame. Now I just need about a year to go out and practice all I have learned. Getting those close up shots is a fine line in the aperture setting when you want good bokeh but you also want detail. That is part of the practice I supposed. Our season is so short I wish I could get out there every single day before the cold sets in.
How are you doing? You have had quite a big spring this year with your surgery. How are you doing on tamoxifen? If I may ask what does FISH mean after Her2+. I don't think I have seen that before. I know that they have revamped some of the info in our statistics.
Hope you have a nice weekend.

I am just loving the butterfly.
Sometimes instead of changing settings on the camera for out of focus backgrounds, I just move back and use my telephoto.
But guess what, one of my pictures was on the local news. Surprise. And a different one next week in the paper. Fun in my volunteer seventies. They asked for them, I didn't send them in.

Congratulations Lisa. You certainly deserve it. You are as good if not better than what I see as top winners in contests. I haven't even tried out the macro filters that you had suggested last year. I am using my dslr for my close ups and I do use a telephoto lens and I do use my body to help focus too. For me it is just needing time to practice, practice, practice as I would always tell my band students. I haven't bought a macro lens. I am still experimenting and trying to decide my niche first. I don't have lots of opportunity to shoot butterflies but now that I saw them at the arboretum I am itching to go back and get some more.
Your butterfly is a beauty.

Lisa - congratulations on a well deserved recognition for your photos.
Nancy - another beauty - if that is a stargazer I can almost smell the fragrance. I went out yesterday because your images inspired me however, the AZ summer sun has left much to be desired in my garden with temp at 100. So nothing new to share. But I will get out there again.
Busy week here with out of town family visits and tomorrow a long drive to Phoenix to take friend to Dr. appointment. Will post more later in the week.

Thanks Scottie and Magic. I am actually not sure what that flower is called. I got that at the arboretum as well. It is a pretty common lily around here. I am glad I inspired you to go out a shoot. However I would be wilting in 100 degree weather. I might get out there today but someone said it is our hottest day of the year. That could be. I am having a patio replaced this week so not sure how much time I will have to go out and shoot. Our summer is coming to an end way to quickly for me. We had a ton of rain in June and I think because of that it just seemed like we didn't have a real summer. Enjoy your visits with your family.

band. .love the flower.it's funny because I am allergic to that flower so this is a way to enjoy it without the sneeze!

Thanks Lisa. I went back yesterday to try to get more butterfly pics and it was too late in the evening but the bumblebees were still out so I took a bunch more bee pics. I guess it is good for me to have a little less fear. If they start flying at me though I don't react very well. When I was little I must have got too close to a bunch of bees and I got stung a few times and I think that is what did it for me. Anyway here is another bee pic.

Nancy: Yeah for you to keep getting out there with your camera to find beauty in your area. I looked for some potted color from my neighborhood grocery/flower shop. Very close up abstract tulip
